If it's not too late to throw in interest, I wouldn't mind submitting a character concept. I played about two sessions before the game fell apart, and could recreate that character, though I could work on the secondary concept as well. Both have a rather Silver Age craziness to them.

Character 1: Agent Ape. A renegade spy and thief from Earth-G, he fled to this dimension in order to escape justice. He's an infiltration specialist, and while he's no hero, he doesn't identify himself as a card-carrying villain either. (Concept: Catwoman meets Monsieur Mallah.)

Character 2: Lo Fat. Most of the world knows his brand of frozen yogurt chains, but a select few know it as a front for the eponymous Lo Fat. Having existed for centuries, this Oriental criminal mastermind ruled the streets from Star City's Chinatown. The most common phrase to describe him is "cold blooded," partially due to his ruthlessness, and also due to his limited sorcery. A deal with one of the Chinese hells gave him control over winter, and many a man who crossed him found the blood in his veins frozen. (Concept: Fu Manchu meets Mister Freeze.)

I'll expand on either of these if selected!

Starting characters in Savage Worlds are incredibly weak by most rpg's standards. In fact, they are typically equivalent to average humans, except for their Wild Card status, so I usually build a starting character with advancements in mind, because you just can't start with all the goodies you want.

This in less true in Supers games where we start with a healthy array of super powers, it's worth mentioning.

I'd say starting characters are quite a bit tougher than that. Three times as durable (wild card, bennies) and highly competent (odds on getting a success with d4-2 + d6 wild die are not that bad plus bennies). Add in edges and AB's and I would put a raw novice SW character at about 3rd level pathfinder.

Weak was a poor choice of words.

What I mean is, they don't have exceptional abilities other than being Wild Cards. You're right, that is a HUGE advantage. In terms of traits, skills, edges and hindrances, a starting character is equivalent to an average person. The Wild Dice and the Bennies are game mechanics that make them exceptional, but their abilities do not. In Pathfinder, a 1st level of any PC class has exceptional abilities that ordinary folk do not.

Cool that makes more sense now. Among the rpg's I am familiar with I'd say SW falls roughly in the middle.

PWO's subjective and incorrect list of rpg by starting character power.
Weak
0.Retro-clones, AD&D, Role Master.
1.Call of Cthulhu, Pathfinder, Tri-Tac (Stalking the Night Fantastic, Fringeworthy, etc)
2.GW traveller, RuneQuest (AH or Chaosium), TSR Star Frontiers/Top Secret/Boot Hill/Gangbusters.
3.Hero System, GURPS
4.TSR Gamma World, Palladium Fantasy, Warhammer Fantasy
5.WW Vampire
6.Feng Shui
7.Rifts
8.WW Warewolf, Changling, Ghost, Mummy.
9.WW Mage
Mighty

Mind you this is rather subjective.

Alright, I guess my hints from the first post weren't enough. The reason I said I'd need to take some liberties is that you're all meant to have been arrested/captured by the V'Sori on Star City.

Some additional setting info (since it seems noone else actually has the setting book :s)

Star City is an Island created mysteriously in 1955 2 miles off the coast of the eastern seasboard, about halfway between Boston and New York. It's roughly six times the size of Manhattan (180 square miles) and is in the shape of an 8 pointed star, like that of a compass rose. The island was created by a being known as the Outsider, a cosmic power level super, and sometimes villain. The island was taken over by the US after his demise when a weapon from his own lab was used against him, vaporizing his on the spot. After several years of study by the US government, they utterly failed to determine what was so special about the place that resulted in a disproportionately high quantity of supers being born or otherwise emerging there.

As far as the United Nations goes, that doesn't really exist any more Mus'ad. Most of the world's leaders were wiped out in the V'Sori's initial strike (they had all turned out to welcome their 'saviors' after all), most capital cities were destroyed from orbit either by the V'Sori at the same time that they revealed themselves, or previously by the Ktharen attacks. What government does remain either consists of the V'Sori or their lackies and toadies (like Mayor Jerry Perez who largely runs the day to day governing of Star City, though everyone knows Warlord Grypon is the one who's actually in charge).

Belle and Poor Wandering One should have answered that question for you Thom. As to looting other super's equipment bought with power points, unless you invest the same amount of power points to take over the device, they will break down in short order as you don't have the know-how to maintain them, or they simply won't work in the first place (they're keyed to the original super's DNA/palm print, etc.) If it's something straight out of the book however, then you can absolutely use that V'Sori blaster rifle, as long as you can figure out how it works.

That is the correct scale Masque, 1"=2 yards. Don't you worry about the black council, I spent quite some time last night playing around with some ideas with what I want to do there. Should be interesting :) Heh, you're as bad as I was, planning out all your advances :) Just as long as things remain flexible to let story stuff in there.

As to the topic of HQ's again you guys don't have to worry about that to start with. All will be made clear in the first adventure/mission. Feel free to have references to bases and the like in your backstory however, but such places would likely no longer be considered 'safe', what with you having been captured/betrayed/what have you.

Just so you're aware though Masque, the Super Power Companion alters and expands the lair concept quite a bit. It's now known as Headquarters, is more customizable, and is also available through an edge as well as power points (including the ability for multiple people to take the edge, or one person to take it multiple times to pool points and expand the base). If you have access to the SPC, it's on page 60 (it gets it's own chapter).

rashly5: Alrighty, taking a look at your character... If you wish you can still take an extra Major hindrance in order to get 5 extra power points for 'Super Karma'. I see you took the Gimmick Hindrance, the ability for him to summon the mask seems problematic for this hindrance to actually count to me. For instance if someone tears his mask off and runs off with it, can he simply summon it back to him and put it on again? If so then this isn't really a hindrance at all. Another way to approach to mask is to buy your powers with the Device modifier, this would allow you to gain several extra power points, and make losing the mask a real danger to the character. It's up to you to consider, but if he can simply summon the mask then it becomes more of a special effect than an actual hindrance or risk to give him benefits.

I would suggest increasing your fighting as well if you want to use the Copycat with the touch modifier, as it requires a touch attack (a Fighting roll at +2, so d4+2 for you, and you have to beat your opponent's parry. Typical parry for non-supers is about 4 to 6). As is at the moment with copycat you can only take 1 point powers, and that's if those powers do not have any additional modifiers, so that's something to think about.

There's probably some other stuff I've missed but it otherwise looks okay. Think those over and get back to me :)

Misroi: I'm not too familiar with half of those references for your concepts, but feel free to submit whichever one you want.

Recruitment for new interested parties will stay open another day. If everyone could have their completed characters in not too long after that, then it will make thinks much easier for me :)

Yeah, that list has already been substantially revised in my head, and will probably have been thoroughly forgotten long before we get any advances at all. This is what my brain chews on when I'm on the freeway.

I actually have the SPC, not the NE book, so I was looking at that chapter on lairs. We could easily have a few heroes spend their full power point allotment on the lair and have it really awesome, but I doubt many people will volunteer for that duty.

I'm glad you're thinking on the Black Council. I've been thinking on what she will take as signs of their involvement, but as paranoid as she is, she can probably make nearly anything fit. At this point, Internet Access isn't quite enough to get her attention, but certainly internet access and subscription to Sports Illustrated would have her wondering. You knew that's how they delivered their instructions, didn't you?

Well, duh!

Let's see... Further encourage indolence in the 'average', 'mainstream' population while at the same time encouraging the idolization of the hypermasculinist, violent, 'physical ideal'... check
At the same time, codify women so that their value is only how 'pretty' or 'shapely' or 'sexy' they are... check

And don't even get me started on their prioritization of 'sports' in the first place!

Mus'ad is happy to have been encaptured by any party and imprisoned on Star City for whatever length of time necessary. It could have been pre-fins or pre-V'sori or after. There won't be a huge amount of ties for Mus'ad built into his backstory, except a certain notoriety with those of the sub-continental persuasion.

Beliefs:
I am a slave to the five thieves... only through slaking their thirst will I be enlightened - Mus'ad's belief structure is a perversion of Sikhism. Rather than follow their virtues, he seeks to engage in their vices - lust, rage, greed, attachment and ego.
I will taste the blood of the one that defiled my turban - when he was captured / while imprisoned, someone (to be decided by GM Peanuts) disrespected his turban... could have been as simple as touching it, or even worse if he took it from Mus'ad. He means to repay that insult with his bare hands.

Instincts:
The bald are deceivers - Mus'ad believes that truthfullness is a province of only the hirsute.
No man is unarmed... unless he is un-armed - as long as the enemy retains his limbs, Mus'ad does not believe him harmless.

GM Peanuts - are they suitable as Beliefs and Instincts? - I know the one with respect to the five thieves is very open, but perhaps he has to complete the set of five to your satisfaction before he can double up on benefits?

GM Peanuts:
In the interest of full disclosure I will be on vacation from 21st December through to 10th January, so my posting in that period will be limited.

Professor Mayhem: Hmm Arrogant and Overconfident. That's not a recipe for disaster at all :p You don't seem to have taken the free knowledge skills (should have four points from Smarts to spend on knowledge skills), which could allow you to free some points up from his current knowledge skill to get something else :)

Masque: Yes a... what would that be 50 point HQ? It would be awesome indeed. Wouldn't be terribly interesting for that character however.

Mus'ad: Hmm, greed and attachment... I suppose Attachment is more about what he already has, greed is about what he wants. Not the best belief really, but okay I suppose...

The thing is, the invasion was about three years ago, so if the V'Sori has him, well he wouldn't still be on earth. I have had a few ideas about what to do with him, I'll consider things again and get back to you.

Mus'ad brings up a good point, this time of year was probably not the best to be starting a new RPG. I'll be more lenient with unexplained absences, but once the actual discussion and gameplay threads are posted I expect you all to post there fairly quickly to show you're still paying attention and interested.

I've switched Gimmick to Weakness (Major): Light and made my superpowers a Device, which seems appropriate even though it runs a huge risk. Also added Curious for those extra power points.

I'm not sure how I'd get my mask since it seems I was captured and the mask removed, but I suppose it's just something to work out.

Switched up my powers accordingly:

Powers:

Chameleon (4): Voice
Copycat (8): level 4, extra duration
Darkvision (1)
Fear (4): Terror
Fearless (1)
Illusion (2): level 1, film quality

I think I'm getting hung up on the word 'belief' - which in my head doesn't really fit with what you're expecting. Seems it's more like 'Goals' or similar.

Maybe one around his desire to be draped in gold jewelry again?

Belief = Conviction?

I know this to be true, therefore I shall endeavor... Personal doctrine, a code whereby a situation elicits a response? Spurs you to action.

Umm... a way for the GM to yank your chain. A hook.

:)

The example most recently offered was: "Jerry Perez's private army are always getting in the way, I will take them down a notch by (blowing up their headquarters, setting an ambush for Lieutenant so-and-so, empty their bank accounts, steal the incoming V'Sori shipment, etc.) to show them who's really in charge in this city."

Belief as per wiki: the psychological state in which an individual holds a proposition or premise to be true.

Goal is: a desired result an animal or a system envisions, plans and commits to achieve

To me the example is clearly a goal, and not explicitly a belief.

Beliefs

The Black Council is a sinister organization bent on world domination and purely evil, and it is my duty to destroy them.

The spirits direct me in mysterious ways. I must always been alert for signs and portents.

The other thing about beliefs, & even I am really bad about this in spite of playing Burning Wheel, which is where Peanut took the idea...
Beliefs can & usually will change fairly frequently in the course of play. They really should be directly related in some way to your current circumstances, so yes, goals might be a better term.

Example: Right now, I have Belledonna's Beliefs as:

1) Maybe the invasion is a 'good' thing? If we take out the alien overlords, we will be in the best position to enact positive change in the recovering world.
2) Obviously the others need my guidance about the best ways to go about matters, unless it has to do with violence, then I suppose I should let the 'experts' handle things...

Those are both beliefs with a certain amount of play right now, the second more than the first, because if she manages to establish a position near if not at the top of the 'pecking order' in the group, she is pursuing that belief. However, just managing to make their escape from the prison something that receives news coverage, to a certain degree, forwards her first belief because that will get the word out to the people of Earth that 'We' are a force of resistance to the invaders.

Huh, I was figuring I would want to re-tool my first belief at least, but now maybe not...

The other thing about Beliefs is that failing to pursue your Beliefs can be a good thing as well.
Going back to my example: Say Belledonna does manage to coerce everyone else into acknowledging her as the group leader, and things just go downhill fast...
She makes the wrong call on a plan, she misreads someone else's goals & starts a 'cold war' in the group, etc...
That is Character Conflict & that also drives stories. It may also lead her to conclude that she either needs to step up her game, or step down as leader.

Right now, to make that a solid Belief in terms of what I interpret them to be, Mus'ad will always be looking at how the current situation can allow him to fullfill those things. Can I experience this/him/her physically/carnally? Can I leave a swath of bloodshed & destruction? Will this provide me with 'wealth'? Does this allow me to keep or regain what is 'mine'? Does this show that I am powerful, desirable, masculine?

Mus'ad wrote:

This is actually a really good, direct belief. All he has to do is beat the prison quartermaster, or any of his officers, to a bloody pulp. That is the guy who is responsible for 'securing' all our possessions. So he is the most direct 'beneficiary' of your stuff.

Mus'ad wrote:

Instincts:

The bald are deceivers - Mus'ad believes that truthfullness is a province of only the hirsute.

So basically, if there is any question whether you believed the bald guy, the answer is 'no'.

Mus'ad wrote:
No man is unarmed... unless he is un-armed - as long as the enemy retains his limbs, Mus'ad does not believe him harmless.

You won't be taken by surprise by a captured enemy who can still move under his/her own power...

Both of your beliefs are really broad & overarching, difficult not impossible to forward in a 'session'.

Masque wrote:

Basically, you are always looking for 'evidence' of the Council's hooks in things. If you find something that 'proves' they had something to do with what is currently going on, you are pursuing this belief.

Granted, this could (possibly even should) be something as ridiculous as the fact that all the 'fin' guards ate the exact same kind of seafood in the refectory...

Masque wrote:

This actually kind of goes back to what I was saying about taking wild & arbitrary 'evidence' as proof of your conclusions. If it is something 'only you' can pick up on, obviously the 'spirits' guided you & no one else...

The problem is that both those beliefs are 'really' open to abuse, for obvious reasons.

I will probably stat up Lo Fat. I liked playing Agent Ape, but we've already got a few "barely villains" here already. It'd be more interesting to play the scheming Lex Luthor type. I'll work him up.

Oh, and I will definitely be spending points on Minions and a Lair. I don't think you can call yourself a master criminal strategist and not have those things.

So instead of:

1. Someone needs to show these upstarts how villainy is done.
2. Just one more job. I know that's what I said last time but this time for sure.

more pertinent beliefs for Bad Penny would be:

1. Take out an opponent who has already incapacitated a younger ally.
2. Loot at least $5,000 worth of alien equipment.

Misroi: Bad Penny definitely approves of the classic mastermind approach. But perhaps leave the power points for the HQ unassigned at creation? Peanut has hinted that developments in that department are already planned I think? Save the points to pimp out any base we get or to establish a base once we know where we'll need one.

Beliefs to be viciously shredded.

1.The V'sori preserved Star City for hybridization experiments.

2.Star city has always been full of secrets. The invasion provides the opportunity to finally uncover them.

Instincts to be laughed at

1.No one is clean. Everyone is part of someone’s agenda. Trust no one, not even yourself.

2.Details matter. Check everything twice.

At long last crunch and gear FINISHED. Ready for inspection.

Sorry for the delay, but in an effort to get the most out a "normal", doing some stuff with "activation", "devices", and "switchable".

Gets hectic... But thanks to Belledonna and the rest of you, I think I'm comfortable with the system.

Actually, you would keep the first beliefs, you would implement them by doing the things listed as the second beliefs.

And then somehow blowing the 5k on something...
Or someone.

What girl wouldn't like $5000 in V'sori bling? The Acquisitrix isn't getting any younger you know...

Fine tuning. I turns out I could not move with all my old gear so I pruned a bit.

I took a couple of liberties that will need your review GM-Peanuts.

I) Combined the Ruger targeting system, a tactical helmet and my awareness device into one thing.

II) Did the same with a handheld computer, a GPS reader, and my interface device.

III) Found shots per clip for the Mega taser and the stun wand on the SW forums. Linked to Clint's relevant posts in my alias. However the nice man did not give a cost etc for spare batteries for the Taser so I just went with the laser battery from SWEX.

Belledonna wrote:

Aye, that's the problem isn't it? :P

Yes, the term Belief likely is a bit misleading I suppose, apologies if that's confused the issue. It is primarily a goal, but also provides a view into your character, and his priorities.

As far as everyone's character's I'm way too tired now to comment, so I will have to check them out and verify tomorrow.

Current applicants:

Bad Penny - Uppity, crotchety Henchman
Belledonna - Mastermind/Other
rashly5/Criminal - Masked Anarchist
Poor Wandering One/Devil's Advocate - Hacker/Techie
Misroi/Lo Fat - Entrepreneur Sorcerer? - Crunch in progress.
Mus'ad - Brick
Masque - Assassin
Arcmagik/Professor Mayhem - Super Sorcerer

Black Thom/??? - High Powered 'Normal' - Crunch in progress

Devil's Advocate: You appear to be one power point over. That or Chameleon should be listed under devices (which I'm guessing it should anyway based on the description of it).

You also seem to have one Attribute and 2 skill points too many (assuming Super Attribute taken 3 times and Super Skill taken twice (for 4 skill points) If either of those is not the case then you've overspent power points by more than 1. Otherwise looks okay (I must admit I haven't really been verifying gear, :p will check that over if you are selected.

As far as his beliefs they just need to be shaped a bit more into some goals. The first it sounds like he would like to uncover said experiments then? The second, well what sort of secrets, what does he want to do with them, etc.

rashly5: Hmm, well don't worry, I'll have to be the one to figure out the mask :) Looks a bit better with more powers. Any particular reason for the weakness to light?

Professor Mayhem's belief is that the Aliens are standing in the way of progress and there is a world that needs to be conquered. His instincts are "I wouldn't even trust myself, why would I trust anyone else?"

@GM-Peanuts: The mask is shadow/darkness-based, so a weakness to light seems appropriate for it.

GM-Peanuts.
Thanks for checking. I was 1 stat and 2 skill points over. The Chameleon power is from a device but it does not have a cost as it is from invent. I have added a note to make that more clear.

I will fully audit powers and gear over the weekend. Books at home at the moment. Why I didn't leave all the numbers on the sheet to make auditing easier I will never know.

Belief section being expanded.

Thanks again for taking the time.
PWO

EDIT. Stat and skill points fixed. Dropped climb and reduced notice to a d6. Str was mis-recorded as a d8 rather than the correct d6. Powers seem to check out but I am using remembered rather than verified numbers so will triple check along with gear.

I'm here...

So far, normal-ish, along similar lines:

Innate - Fearless 2pt, Heightened Senses 1pt, Speed 1pt, Leap 1pt
Cortical Nano Stimulator (device) -
1) Awareness w/Danger Sense, slow activation 4pt, -2pt slow, -2pt device
2) Toughness 4, 4pt, -2 device

Idea is start with good stock and training... Nanos released into subject stimulate natural heightening of abilities, resistances and bring closer to max Human potential. Alternative to combat drugs, subject does not burn out as quickly.

Along original test pilot lines, this device is a prototype, technology is lost or locked/sealed away, vanished. Keyed to DNA sequence. There's nothing flashy, so not easily recognizable when used. Device is small flattish, and sits/attaches to the base of the skull.

Working on Attacks...

Hmmm wondering how our kindly gm will run the income part of the rich/filthy edge.

Monthy stipend?
Yearly?
Or does it just effect starting cash.

I suppose this all relates to the granularity and feel of the game. Will we need to track living expenses? How about ammo?

DA is rather gear/ammo dependent so until I can get my hands on energy weapons that can recharge of generators/the grid this will be an issue. Likely even after that as there are the trick weapons and perhaps some guards/minions to arm.

Thinking about the SPC lair rules. I like them but there is a tiny problem with the training/danger room. If one can 'purchase' this room with Invent/Super Sorcery/ or I suppose copycat? That would have to be an odd trapping. Then no gadgeteers or sorcerers will ever not have access to it lowering their skill cost substantially. This could be an issue. As I am rather fond of the high-tech squat instant lair or the fancy interdimensional space sorcerer's version I propose nipping the training room problem in the bud.

Proposed house rule: The training room can only be part of a permanent lair. Invent/Super Sourcery/Copycat or other powers that allow you to occasionally have a lair cannot include this room. I suppose edge cases could be made for say hiding out in the catskills for a couple of months in a 'temporary' lair allowing the training bonus but edge cases are best decided on a case by case basis.

Just musing, nothing important.

When driving a tank, piloting a fighter jet...armed heli, whatever... How do you fire weapons? Shoot or computer use? Separate skill like gunnery?

Pretty sure it's shooting. SW is fiercely simplistic that way. Which means that if you need a gunner, Masque might be the girl for the job.

Masque has it. Even hacking into the defence grid of a V'sori base and turning the automated turrets on the baddies would use the shooting skill of the person doing the controlling.

The AI mod under vehicles might say something about automating guns but as I am bookless at the mo I can't be sure.

Thanks, just glad he doesn't need another skill! Not complaining.

(I have my book)
While it does say (a suggested command is "attack anyone that comes within 5 yards of your front flamethrower.") that the vehicle can make AI attacks, it doesn't say what the vehicle rolls for that.
Looks like a GM call, though

if I were running it:
I'd say lower of shooting or computer use (if you're building it yourself) or treat it as a minion as far as the rolls go (if you're buying it with power points).

but then, I'm not the GM, so that means nothing.

Devil's Advocate: I assume the Rich thing is from ill gotten gains? If so it will probably be either fortnightly or monthly. Unless you guys want to track things down to that level of detail I am usually not too concerned with tracking ammo and such.

Misroi: Ya got about 12 hours to get in at least preliminary crunch (powers, hindrances, etc) before I post my decision of who is selected. After that I'll be making my opening post for those who are selected, and I'll keep the three who aren't chosen on the back-burner for totally-not-nefarious purposes. Promise.

AI Question: If anyone is concerned about this I would probably give the AI a minimal stat block (a minion statblock like Masque suggested above, though possibly not the one in the book), which would have a shooting of d6 or so say. Like the minion power you could then spend additional points to upgrade the AI to make it actually intelligent on a one to one power point cost (so give it Super Attribute (Smarts), Super Skill (Shooting, etc.

Yup ill gotten gains.

Ammo. Given that the cost per bullet goes up by 10 once the game starts not tracking ammo is rather a godsend. I think ammunition cost is used as a balancing element so that power based ranged attackers do not get completely outclassed by the folks who just bought guns. But I can see it being a pain.

Questions.
Does this apply to special weapons/ammo? Mega-taser/stun wand and the like?
What about trick ammo and grenades?
Other expendables like Stimpacks/Warpshunts/Ablative armor/combat drugs?

Sorry to be a pain with all the questions.

Alrighty, well since we've had no character sheet from Misroi he's unfortunately not going to make the cut. Apologies Misroi.

So the selection of villains is:

Bad Penny, Belledonna, Devil's Advocate, Masque, Mus'ad, and Professor Mayhem.

Apologies to Misroi, Criminal, and Black Thom, all of the entries had some interesting potential, but I think my running of them would suffer if I went a larger group (6 is already the largest group I've ever DM'd for :))

So, I was going to to have several hours to work on posting the opening post and writing some stuff up about the events leading up to the start of the game for everyone, but I ended up going to a friend's place with my brother and playing with their WiiU until 0230 am instead :p I will create the discussion thread in a moment, but the gameplay thread will have to wait until tomorrow.

If we have any issues with characters/players dropping out, the three who didn't make it will be first on my list if they're still interested.

Devil's Advocate: I'll have to look over all that gear stuff in the morning.

Succesful Applicants: If you 6 could make your way to the Discussion thread, ensure you have an appropriate Alias for your character, and that everything is up to date on you sheet, then I will do a final check of the characters, and we can get things started.

Understandable, thanks!

No worries. Thanks and hope y'all have a great time with the game!
