This is the first day of automn and all people of sandpoint and around have come to enjoy themselves.
The weather is nice which can only add to the enjoyment .
Several shops have stands in the square before the cathedral to take advantage of the festival. Children are running everywhere and the din of conversation is quite loud

Just before noon , Mayor Deverin ascends a stage in front of the cathedral accompagnied by Sheriff Hemlock , Cyrdak Drokkus and of course Father Zantus.
As the crowd notices her, a hush descends and all eyes turn to the stage. She smiles and begins to speak:

"Welcome! As many of you know, my name is Kendra Deverin and I am proud to serve as mayor of this fine town.
It's wonderful to see so many of you here to join us on this proud day. I'd like to extend my welcome to the many new faces I see in the crowd.
I hope you all are enjoying your stay here in Sandpoint and especially if it is your first visit here I sincerely hope that you're having a wonderful time.
And to all of the old faces I see today, thank you for coming and thank you for everything that each of you has done to keep this town strong in recent years.
I see that even Larz Rovanky has torn himself away from work to join us today! It is truly a miracle from Desna herself!

There is quite a bit of laughter and many eyes are turned to Larz who has a reputation for being a work alcolic. Larz has a sour expression on his face on hearing this .
Kendra waves gaily to him and continues.

Without further ado, let me introduce your Sheriff, Belor Hemlock!"

Belor wearing a worn breastplate and a longsword belted at his waist stands and walks to the center of the stage.
His eyes are constantly moving about the crowd. He shakes the Mayor's hand and begins to speak.

"Thank you Mayor. Even in the heat of celebration, let us not forget the sad events that brought us to this day.
And also let us not forget the souls that were lost five years ago.
I would like you to all join me in a moment of silence to remember the lives that were lost in the fire that claimed our previous chapel on that fateful night.

The Sheriff lowers his head and the crowd joins him, many of them quite awkwardly as the silence persists.
After the moment is over, the Sheriff raises his head and begins to speak again.

In remembering let us also not allow these events to repeat themselves.
I am of the understanding that a bonfire is planned for tonight. I urge you all to observe caution during this event.

He clears his throat and smiles awkwardly
And ummm... Enjoy yourselves. Let me introduce the next speaker; give your attention to Cyrdak Drokkus, proprieter of the local theatre.

He nods to the crowd and walks back to his chair, passing Cyrdakk who is already on his way up to the center-stage.
Cyrdakk is quite a contrast to the Sheriff; he is brightly dressed, sports a well-groomed goatee, and seems to be thoroughly enjoying the day.
As he reaches the center stage he loosens his collar a bit, winks into the crowd and starts to talk:

Well, thank you Sheriff for that uplifting oratory. Now I know this town has been through some hard times, but look at what we've accomplished
He motions towards the church.
And I'm telling you, they spared no expense with this place. Father Zantus' chamber pot? Solid gold.
I kid you not, our generous nobles put a pretty copper into the construction of this joint. I think the Churches even chipped in a silver or two!
I even heard a rumor that all of the Gods got together and scrounged up four gold pieces to help get this thing built!
But don't take it from me, the Padre over here is the one with the direct line, he's the one you want to hear from!
But before I let him get things going I'd like to take this opportunity to extend my personal invitation to each and every one of you to the new production of "The Harpy's Curse" starring the world-famous Magnimarian diva Allishanda as Avisera the harpy queen!
It's all premiering tomorrow evening at the Sandpoint Theatre and it is going to be fab-u-lous!
And now join me in a bit of applause for his holiness himself, Father Zantus!"

The crowd cheers as Cyrdak motions Zantus to the center stage. The young priest looks noticedly abashed at the reception set up for him.
He wears the traditional ceremonial robes of a priest of Desna and a shiny silver holy symbol about his neck.
He smiles and tries to calm the crowd down, eventually speaking when the applause has subsided:

"Ahem, thank you. Thank you Cyrdak. And thank all of you for coming to join us on this most Holy day.
Today is a day of new beginnings so without boring you with long speeches, I declare the Swallowtail Festival officially underway!"

The crowd cheers and resume talking among themselves . The inns and taverns have also put long trestles with their best dishes on them
These dishes are free to all and the crowd certainly take advantage of it especially around the rusty dragon with its curry-spiced salmon and early winterdro mead.
The Hagfish lobster chowder and the White Deer's peppercorn venison have also their adherents but they are also clearly less appreciated on the whole

After the lunch , some enterpraising musicians make the town dance . there are also some games for the children .
A good time is having had by all until the evening when Father Zanthus again takes position to the stand . He uses a thunderstone to attract the attention of everyone
during this time , Danaris and Malcolm have taken place near a cart which contains a cage with captives butterflies they intend to release . the plan is for them to release the butterflies
when Father Zanthus will have finished to relate the parable of Desna and the blind child. The dedication of the church is planned just after this .

This parable tells how Desna once fell wounded to earth nd was nursed back to health by a blind child <ho in reward of his selfless generosity was transformed in an immortal butterfly by Desna

I'll five you some time to comment some more on your actions during the day but DO NOT describe what you do AFTER the thunderstone is heard ...

Malcolm spends the day taking care of any duties that Father Zantus requires of him. In his free moments, he pals around with Danaris, and he even approaches Sheriff Hemlock on one occasion to discuss the protection of the Cathedral area during the dedication and the bonfire later in the evening. Throughout the day he remains ever vigilant for pickpockets, other lawbreakers, or disturbances of the peace. As the time for the dedication draws near, he is certain to track down Danaris so that they can assume their assigned positions at the butterfly cart prior to the momentus occasion.

Bleh.

Not one orc, not one warg, dragon, or even a scary hag. Nothing. I'm on the look out for nothing.

As much as Kast wants to be a soldier, he admits that standing guard isn't his favorite. After a few hours, his left leg begins to throb. After a couple more hours, his leg would actively ache and Kast would be gritting his teeth just to walk around.

Not that Kast would complain...he volunteered for this. It was an honor and a privilege to serve in the militia. And unlike *some* (looking in the direction of Zees as he attends the festival without a care in the world), Kast knows there is more to this world than life inside Sandpoint: there are wonders and dangers outside these walls and Kast was determined to go find them and see them.

Luckily, Kast's shift was almost over and soon he could go to enjoy some salmon and maybe some mead.

While waiting for his replacement, Kast feels that he can safely say that his patrol between the junkyard and the lighthouse are completely and utterly safe.

I hear that they are going to release butterflies for the ceremony. I'd like to see that. In the meantime, maybe I'll make just one more tour of my charge.

Kast patrols again, using his longspear has a walking stick, his shield strapped to his back. ::pace, limp, pace, limp::

Before noon Dorin finishes moving basketed food from the Rusty Dragon Inn to the town cathedral's open square. Of course Ameiko won't let us use the cart, he thinks to himself. And somebody has to set up the tables and chairs. Dorin glances around. I can't look over the other booths until after lunch is over, he says internally. Where's Ameiko? I'm glad Bethana isn't here, snapping orders at everyone, including me.

The cathedral square is packed with people, especially shouting children. Dorin looks up to see Mayor Deverin and the others approaching the stage. Dorin stays at the Rusty Dragon booth with the serving girls and cooks.

The Web ate my first post, or I would have beat Malcolm!
To repeat what I said on the OOC thread, I'll be out Saturday-Sunday.

Male Human (Chelaxian) Cleric 2

Danaris spends much of the day helping with preparations. He also finds time to greet the people of Sandpoint, especially the folks who have come in from outlying areas, to offer support and advice to folks who need it. He also spared a few glances towards his older brother Aerodus, especially when his brother lunged at the drinks. He hopes that

Early in the day he greeted Malcolm with the feigned disapproval of his elaborate and expensive armor before giving him an impish grin and a firm handshake.

During the speeches, he listened attentively to the mayor, admiringly to the sheriff's gruff remembrance, and disapprovingly to Cyrdrak Drokkus' advertisement.

Danaris is glad see the large turnout, to see the community recovering and, hopefully, being made whole in consecrating our new cathedral.

And, of course, now he waits at his appointed position at the butterfly cart.

Unable to find anything of interest among the goods for sale, Zees enjoys some curry-spiced salmon and a couple early winterdro meads.

Avoiding Sheriff Hemlock--and Malcolm and Gar--Zees looks for a place within 25' of the food tables. Yep, that fish looks fresh. Almost like it could still be flopping. He then makes fish flop as people approach the tables, try to put one on a plate, etc. Assuming some find it amusing and others annoying, he will continue until discovered and run off(possibly by Dorin).

Having warmed up, Zees will then lurk near the mead waiting for a certain limping classmate to refresh himelf from his morning duties. It's a shame that first glass of mead isn't going to pass his lips. Perhaps he'll find it just as refreshing over his head.

Mead! I finally get to enjoy the festival...and a chance to rest my leg. And mead!

Walking toward the Cathedral on this way to the food, Kast spies Malcolm.

"Looking splendid this day, Malcolm. Maybe you'll give me a chance to dirty your armor after the festival? Fancy a bit of sparring after the festivities? I promise not to hurt you too much!" Kast says with a smile.

He is too good for me, but I learn every time his sword cracks on my shield. I'm getting better! Maybe today I'll see if he minds giving me some training with that fancy sword of his.

Kast sees the festivities in full swing and while he loves living in Sandpoint, in his heart he knows that he will stagnate here. But these people have been true friends for all my life and the thought of leaving causes him a bit of pain.

Male Human (Chelaxian) Cleric 2

While talking to some of the older townsfolk, Danaris sees Kast limp towards the food and nods to him, thinking:

"Phaer has gifts: a talent for knowledge and a charisma that causes his students to love him. He could be a pillar of Sandpoint for years to come. But, sometimes, you can see the frustration in his face. He's torn; he wants to be someone else. Perhaps that is why he volunteers for guard duty when no one would criticize him for finding other ways to help the community. It's a shame, but I think his heart lies elsewhere. I wonder how much longer he will stay here in Sandpoint."

Gar will have to catch up

Kast is happy to see he has not missed the ceremony and hurry towards the Rusty Dragon booth where Dorin will serve him . He has just reached it (while Zees is nearby nearly himself with glee) . Dorin and Malcolm are in position not too far
The thunderstone brings everyone's conversation to an halt and the people turn toward Father Zanthus . He opens his mouth to speak when suddenly you hear a woman's scream . Seconds later , you begin to hear others people scream but also some high pitched voices shieking .

Gar sits and listens to the speeches, but his mind is mostly on the beer in his mug. He is a bit tired this morning as he walked the rafters with a lantern late last night. He wanted to ensure that no short cuts were taken when trying to finish the construction in time for the festival.

The beer is quite good, and definately helps the blathering go by a bit quicker. But suddenly the coarse words come to him that make him spit his beer out in a blast.

Dorin has walked around to the other booths after lunch, looking for ones from Magimar, but Ameiko shows up just long enough to tell Dorin to get back to the Rusty Dragon booth. He is to take over the booth's responsibilities from the younger serving girls. Ameiko then disappears again.

So a bored Dorin is stuck opening ale casks and beer barrels and dipping mead for the lone serving girl still serving townsfolk at the booth. Dorin is about to serve a full tankard to the brown-haired guardsman in the hide shirt with the longspear when Father Zanthus pops off the thunderstone. Although Dorin manages to not slop any mead on the counter he is still startled, as his attention was on the customer. Then the screaming starts.

"What's going on?" Dorin asks out loud to the Rusty Dragon Inn serving girl and the guardsman (Kast).

Perception check (Wis) 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12 to see around the guardsman (Kast) at what is making people scream. Any running around or view of what's causing the screaming?

Free Action: "Don't look at me. I just got here. Wait...where is Zees?" Kast looks for the obvious cause of the trouble.

Wait...is that goblin? This is way above Zees level of mischief.

At first , Dorin does not see anything . But then , 5 small creatures rush the booth : GOBLINS ! They are equipped with some sort of smelly leather armor. Four of them have short sword in the open , rwo of them are waving them exuberantly around and threaten Gar but the two others strike  Zees and Kast

The last one jump in the table and in the dish of salmon . He wields a bag but picks a piece of salmon and stuff it in his mouth .

Elsewhere you begin to hear a song . It is strangely in common but there can be little doubt the ones 'singing' are goblins

One good way of dealing in PBP is to roll intiative once . But rather than wait for your initiative , people I say can act act by order of their post . No AoO since none of you have a weapon out

GM: Does this mean that we are or are not acting by the initiative that you rolled already? My experience with PbP suggests that the best course is to stick to the initiative order.

"You made me spill my beer...and get out of the food!"
Not understanding how or why these Goblins were here, Gar knows what to do with a Goblin. He pulls his adze free from on his back and swings, looking to knock the Goblin up and off the table.

Yes Malcolm , this means exactly this . For example ? I consider that GAR has acted this round and so all you (since the goblins have only one initiative ) could react to what he did . Otherwise , we would always be waiting for someone to post

Posted a map , hope you can see it and that it's clear
since Gar posted before I had time to post the map , he can reconsider his action ... [/ooc]

Free Action: The serving girl next to Dorin (J15 on map) drew in a breath, her eyes going wide as she brought up her hands to her mouth to begin to scream. "RUN! GET OUT OF HERE!" Dorin shouted at the brunette, making her gape at him. The white lock in Dorin's black hair was silver in the sunlight. "GO!" Dorin shouted, his features red and angry. The serving girl yelped and turned around, her legs pumping under her long skirt to sprint away.

Movement: Dorin backpedaled away from the lime green, squat little monster on the table in the salmon dish. I think that's a goblin, from Daviren Hosk's stories, Dorin's mind flashed. The ears certainly look right. A rusty knife, looking more like scrap metal than a blade, gleamed in the little creature's hand. (Five-foot step from H15 to I15.)

Action: Dorin remembered the training the elderly mage gave him as a boy in the caravans. How he practiced in secret, even from Ameiko. It's just like cooling a keg of ale when you bring it up from the cellar. Dorin thought to himself. Do the gestures, say the words. See the spell. Concentrate. People were still yelling and screaming all around him. Pointing his right arm and index finger out at the atrocious, filthy little goblin, Dorin called out "Ray of Frost!". A thin blue beam of light erupted from Dorin's outstretched fingertip aimed at the goblin on the table. (Gob #5 at G14, 10-15 feet away)

Dorin backed away from the goblin who had jumped off of the table as it swung its' weapon at him. The dirty blade sliced at Dorin's outstretched arm and across his chest. Pain flared through Dorin's mind. That's not a knife, that's a small sword! he realized. Blood welled up out of the deep cuts on his arm and clothing. A dwarf on the other side of the table bellowed, hitting one of the goblins near him with a sharp weapon. A black-haired guardsman ran past Dorin, dagger outthrust at the green goblin. Something flew through the air behind Dorin.

Round 5: Ray of Frost or roll up left sleeve for Acid Splash
Round 6: Ray of Frost or Acid Splash.
Cast Mage Armor only after immediate battle or if it looks like all enemies are being taken care of by the others. Some healing would be nice.

Malcolm , I just sent you an E Mail. In fact I made you move adjacent to Gob2 last round whic seemed logical. So far Gar rules, he is the only one having any success

*This!* I was born for *this*!

Kast looks around for his next opponent, completely unaware that his leg is a twisted bit of flesh...and feeling alive for the first time.
