Rise of the Runelords

Game Master SweeperAZ

A local festival, what could possibly go wrong?

Hey all, I'm a long-time gamer and GM who hasn't touched his dice in awhile and am looking to shake off the rust and do some gaming again. So I've grabbed the PF Core book and and a few other items.

I am looking to run a PbP game using the Runelords Adventure Path as a foundation.

I'm looking for a minimum of 4 and maximum of 6 players to participate. Brand new players are always welcome to join. Experienced players are welcome as well, but if you played the Runelords AP already, please don't put in a request to join.

Starting level: 1

A few paragraphs of backstory, (what the character was doing before the game begins), is requested.

Classes/Races allowed: All PF Core Classes and Races are allowed. Nothing from from supplemental material will be permitted for now. This is to keep things simple for all concerned.

Point build rules will be used. Standard Fantasy 15 points for Attributes.

The Pathfinder SRD can be of help for those who don't own the PF Core book yet.

Anyone interested?

tempted, I'll think about it.

I'll admit I'm pretty interested in this. I'll get writing some backstory and pitch the idea.

RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 32

Dotting for interest. I guess I'll try my hand at a cleric (Varisian Pilgrim).

I'm interested, though I have confessions to make first.

I've ran about half of the first module, and played in the first couple encounters previously. Also, I've read through the first three books fairly well, and am passingly familiar with the last three.

If the above is ok, I'd like to try my hand at a sorcerer who has spent the last year or so traveling the smaller towns of Varisia acting as a performer at various fairs and small gatherings. I've got to look up what bloodlines are out of the core book to make sure, but I'm thinking probably arcane.

If my familiarity with the campaign is too much I fully understand, and hope you have a blast with the game.

Personally, I never cared for the "Blood of *whatever*" aspect of Sorcerers, preferring the Dragonlance version of "Rediscovering magic so old it's new". But that's just me. :)

As far as you playing some of the AP already, well, I'll have to think on that. I will say that I'm not going to faithfully adhere to the AP, but I do need a starting point.

I would love to get in on this. I have played lots of Pathfinder, but never a PbP. Right now I would probably play a elven wizard who has come to Varisia from his homeland of Kyonin in search of lost Thassalonian magics. I can try to get a statblock up in the next 24 hours.

I can post at least once and probably twice a day on weekdays. I am on central time (texas).

I am definitely interested! I've been wanting to play Rise of the Runelords for a very long time. I'm new to PBP, but really looking forward to giving it a shot.

I'll work out a concept asap and get back to you.

Hey Sweeper, will you be using traits?

Dotting for interest.

Sounds cool -- I'm thinking a human or half-orc ranger -- probably a Sandpoint native -- if I go half-orc, I'd probably make him a human-looking foundling who was raised at the Turandorok academy. Will flesh out details as they pop into my head.

Completely missed Traits in my initial reading of the rule book.

I will allow the recommended maximum of 2 Traits with the caveat that Regional traits must fit with the area of the Runelords setting. That being said, I'm not as familiar with the world as I'd like and I don't own the PF Campaign book, but anything in the regional section not specifically marked or marked with Varisia will be fine. The rest of the traits will be case-by case.

Sczarni

I'd like to put forth a "vanilla" rogue. He will be good at skills and very passable as the party face. I will likely take the knife master archetype.

I'll get a backstory and a build up tonight or tomorrow.

Full dislaimer - I am currently in a Runelords campaign. However, the GM is running a module before we start the actual AP, so we haven't gotten to that story yet. If I make the cut for this, I will drop the other game as I don't mesh well with that GM. Otherwise, I am a reliable player and post often.

RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 32

Instead of the two traits, can I select Country Born as a bonus feat?

Silver Crusade

I'd like in, I haven't done a pbp game before and would like to try. Pretty open on characters at present, so trying to come up with a good one. Currently thinking either a Cleric of Desna seeking to travel the land and spread the faith or a Varisian bard. I'll make a decision and post something more in detail.

im sure that everyone will cringe at this, but...

will you allow the gunslinger?

if not, i would throw my hat in for being a paladin of some random god, dont know who yet.

Just so you know, I'm thinking about submitting a straight-up fighter. A brooding fellow with a grudge and a chip on his shoulder. But before I get into the build, are you okay with archetypes from the Advanced Player's Guide or Ultimate Combat?

No problem if you want to keep it to the Core Rulebook. It might be fun to try something basic again.

"Request permission to join the quest!"

This is my character I would like to play. Please let me know what you think and if there is anything I'd need to change. Thanks!

I DL'd and read over the players guide. This is what I came up with. Hope you like it.

Darius Pope was glad when he finally reached Sandpoint. Though he loved the freedom of the highway, he was thankful for a night in a warm bed and the chance of getting a hot bath.

He had almost passed up the town, but after hearing fellow travelers speaking of the upcoming dedication of a new church, Darius knew that it was not mere chance that had brought him here.

Anxiously awaiting the dedication, Darius has spent his time walking through the towns streets enjoying the people and the sights.

Played as far as

Spoiler:
getting to the outside of the glassworks in the first book
with this character before the GM had to withdraw. I would like to submit him for consideration. I may need to drop his scores, he may have been built off 20 pt buy. He is a bit kender-esque in personality, but if you look at his posts you will see how I played him.

Also, how are you doing starting gold, max or average?

I'm a newbie, but I'll try creating a char and uploading it tonight. I'd love to get in on this if you've got a spot.

I like the "blood of..." aspect, though I think it's limiting in some aspects. That's one reason I like the arcane bloodline, as at least to me it represents a strong connection to the arcane, rather than some random critter. I had a pretty high level wizard/psion back in second edition, and the moment I saw the arcane bloodline I thought of a character based on the wiz/psi having a child who had no aptitude at "learning" magic, but was picking it up naturally.

Wish I would have played more Dragonlance back in the day. I thought the concept of magic being swayed by the phases of the moon was pretty neat, and it was sorta a counter point to the setting I did play a lot, Darksun. Arcane magic being outlawed in DS where divine magic was rare/nonexistant in (at least the time period I did get to play it) DL.

Like I said, no worries if you decide you'd rather not have someone "experienced" with the campaign.

Here's the alias I'd like to try. Its straight fighter, but for a newb like me I was thinking it'd be easier for us all. ;)

If you need more backstory, let me know and I'll be happy to complicate and psychology it up.

Posted as Dragonshade above, here's the character statted up.

Background is that Caladrian was originally from Sandpoint, but signed up with the guards/militia much in the steps of his father. Hearing that there was a festival in his old home to celebrate a religious event, he took the time off to return to the place of his roots.

@Flykiller: I'm going to have to say no to that. The traits are purely optional and trading them in for an extra feat is a bit much.

@Rizzenmangus: Core Classes only at the beginning. I'm pretty new to PF myself and want to keep it simple for sanity's sake if nothing else. :)

@Grey Wind: I don't own the APG so just the core Fighter class for now.

@Darius Pope: Nice beginning. What class are you going for?

@Durvin Tamish: If you can rebuild to the 15 pt limit, by all means.

@Fraust: It's probably best you don't play as you've already played/read a good deal of the AP. Have you considered running it yourself? Judging by the responses so far here, there will be more players than slots.

To All:

All characters will start off with max HP and Max gold for their respective classes.

SweeperAZ wrote:

@Darius Pope: Nice beginning. What class are you going for?

It's in his profile. He's a paladin.

@Oded Firehand: Just a couple paragraphs about what he was doing before he arrived at Sandpoint. Personal plot points are welcome, but not strictly necessary. It's usually better to, well, get to know your character in play. :) It looks like you're missing feats and skills on your sheet. have you picked them yet?

@Darius Pope: Character looks good. Approved.

Updated recent history. Yeah, I picked them in Hero Lab, still trying to get the hang of creating these things. My background is more in the RPing side, and less the dice-rolling side.

Here's the archetype stuff from d20pfsrd.com if it helps

Thanks for the consideration.

Running a game takes a lot more of an investment than playing. I tried running Carrion Crown and Age of Worms but had to kill CC half way through the first encounter and drop AoW before we even got started. Runelords is getting special treatment this coming Paizocon/Gencon, and if life is less hectic I'll run a game of it then.

Good luck with the game.

SweeperAZ wrote:

Great! Thanks! I look forward to playing.

Silver Crusade

Not sure how to do Alias, but I'll see about that in abit.

Background

Spoiler:
Treygan Gorski's is the son of Lucca Gorski, a merchant who traveled over vast regions of Golarion. When passing through the town of Sandpoint many years ago, he ended up taking a bride from the town along with the rest of his goods. They travled along the merchant paths for several years before Treygan was born to them.

Shortly after his birth, his mother has passed from illness. Lucca, unwilling to risk his son on the open road, entrusted his care to a trusted friend, a priest of Desna named Marcus Ro. Marcus becamse a father figure to Treygan, teaching him what he knew of the world. Marcus had grown old and sedentary in his life, and mostly related to him the adventures of his youth. Lucca would come and visit whenever he travled nearby.

When Treygan was 12, news reached them that Lucca had been killed while visiting Sandpoint once again on one of his trade runs. Marcus had grown too old to travel at this point and Treygan had to take care of him, preventing him from return for five years, after which Marcus had passed away. Treygan has thus travled to the town of Sandpoint, to see the town where his mother came from and to give his prayers to his father's grave. He himself had become a Cleric of Desna

Sorry if it seems abit choppy, trying to keep it brief (I tend to become long-winded in backgrounds).

The Crunch - I'll establish an alias when I figure it out, but for now

Spoiler:
Male Human CG Cleric of Desna 1

Here's the character in the Alias.

Here's the alias for psychicmachinery.

Background:
Berenwyr (Beren for short) has lived most of his life in the forests of Kyonin. When he was barely more than 100 years old, he and several of his cousins traveled to the Tanglebriar, convinced in their youthful foolishness that they could beat back the demonic forces of Treerazer. Beren almost died in those dark woods, and lost all but one of his cousins that day. Although he survived the ordeal, his face and hands were horribly scarred, and the points of his elven ears were almost completely destroyed.
He is taciturn and focused, and sometimes cruel, although he has a soft spot for all children, and will often perform magic tricks for them using his cantrips. He has come to Sandpoint because of rumors of the potency of the magic of Ancient Thassilon. It is his hope that he may find the knowledge that will one day grant him revenge and free his homeland from its horrible blight.

Crunch:
NG Male Elf Wizard (Conjuration) 1, 11 hp; Feats: Scribe Scroll, Toughness, Alertness; Skills: Appraise +6, Kn(Arcana) +7, Kn(Nature) +7, Kn(Planes) +7, Linguistics +6, Perception +7, Spellcraft +7; Familiar: Raven; Spells Known: Color Spray, Grease, Mage Armor, Obscuring Mist, Protection from Evil, Silent Image

Am I too late? I've actually DM'd the first two adventures as well, and I'm already in two adventures on the boards, but I'd love to take a chance to play this (and to study up on it in case my game ever comes off of hiatus).

All you need I think is in the players guide and there is a map in the back of it.

Here is a map from Jade Regent I found online of the same area.

MAP LINK That shows the area has alot of different terrain features.

I'm thinking of making up my druid to add in as a support role. It looks like Shanoti make the best druids but I like to stay away from the norm.

So I am leaning towards a Veterinarian type druid. The guy in town who helps the sick cows and horses and such. He himself won't be much of a fighter but later on he will summon animals to help in a tight spot.

Making alias now.

Lantern Lodge

Lost Gamer here again.

This is my druid concept for this.

He's not much to look at now as I didn't max him out on everything normal to druids. I think as the game goes on and he learns to fight and what is needed of him he will start gaining better weapons, armor, feats, etc.

But now he is just a common man not looking for adventure. LOL but then isn't that how all the great heroes started out?

Oded Firehand: Fighter 1 approved.

Treygan Gorski: Just need skills, feats and traits (if any) and your Cleric 1 should be fine.

Berenwyr: Wizard 1 approved.

Darksmokepuncher: a rogue would be welcome

Gellius Frispin: I'm curious as to what your character is wearing to drop his speed to 20 as I don't see any armor listed

Twigs: Sorry bud, this is for folks who haven't played or run any part of the AP. But like I was saying to Fraust yesterday, would you be willing to run it as it looks like there will be more players than slots?

Profile updated to 15 pt buy and max starting gold.

I played through the first encounter in another PbP, then it died. I loved the idea of the PF and would like to get in.

I can do a human wizard with a dark past trying to find his way in the world, or a dwarf fighter or ranger.

Let me know if there is room!

This is Grey Wind. I submit to you Edrec Verhidan. I still have to work out some details on the build, mostly equipment. He has a brief background which I can expand upon later.

It looks like you already have a fighter, but I'm hoping there is room for one more!

Thanks!

Background:

In all the 20 years father Boiko Mitrich has served Desna, he's never been in an actual temple. He was one of the countless pilgrims wandering the roads of Varisia, offering prayers and blessings to the travelers. The pilgrims also provided minor help on the road - first aid to the sick, purifying spoiled food, and the like. In return, they received modest coin, and sometimes were invited to share food and shelter for the night, although they were well accustomed to

Father Boiko enjoyed somewhat of a special renown in southern Varisia - he had what some called to be a special gift from Desna when it came to reading people's fortunes. However Boiko knew all too well that this was a double-edged sword.

Several years ago, he encountered a richly decorated caravan travelling to Riddleport. The merchant who owned the caravan asked if Boiko could determine whether a profit awaits him if he makes it in time. As Boiko performed the harrowing, he had to restart several times because the Fiend card, which symbolized Death, was constantly falling out of his hand. Eventually the reading predicted a good deal, and the merchant continued the journey, having generously rewarded Boiko. He did indeed make a fortune in Riddleport, but upon his return found his family assasinated by his rival. Since that occasion, Boiko does all he can to talk himself out of predicting people's fortunes.

Despite that, Boiko himself seems to enjoy a special boon of luck. During the years of his travels, he never fell victim of bandits or wild animals, and seemed not to know what a misfortune is. When people asked him if he has ever tried to predict his own fortune, however, he always swiftly changed the subject.

He always carries several starknives, favored weapons of Desna, on his belt, but claims he never had to use them. It's not true, however: he engaged in a fight just once in his life, when the people who asked for his services turned out to be Shoanti slavers. Against all odds, he managed to trip the slave overseer, then cut off the lock from the slave cage with a lucky starknife blow, and escaped unharmed into the forest while the slaves attacked their masters.

Many years have passed since that day, however, and Boiko started to feel his age creeping upon him. Thoughts of settling down occur in his mind more and more often, and when he learned that Sandpoint is about to re-open its once-famous cathedral, it seemed like a perfect occasion for him to stay there for a while and have a taste of the town life. In a few weeks, Boiko has arrived in Sandpoint just in time for the opening ceremony.

Awesome. I'm excited for my first PbP. I'll keep an eye on the Players and Characters tabs for official add.

Thank you.

Weylyn (WAY-lynn) Dell is a Sandpoint native and ne'er-do-well. He runs with shady people doing shady things. Weylyn used to dream of heroes and adventure, but a hard life makes one grow up fast. He is suspicious and questioning, and loves to use his keen intellect and cunning to out maneuver his opponents rather than fight them toe-to-toe: though he's not afraid to fight if needs be.

I'll have a stat block soon. Work has been a bit hectic.

Caladrian-Cleric 1 Approved

So far, we have: a Paladin (Darius Pope), a Fighter (Oded Firehand), A Wizard Berenwyr), and a Cleric (Caladrian).

Darksmokepuncher is a tentative for the 5th slot as he's the only one to propose a Rogue so far. :)

Still looking at the rest of the characters. They're looking pretty good so far. I've been making the choices based on complete character sheets as I see them and I may have to literally toss a die for the last slot.

I have completed Edrec's character sheet, updated with equipment, AC, and attacks. I could still fill in the background a bit more if you need me to.

*Crosses fingers in anticipation of the die roll*

SweeperAZ:
I think Caladrian is a Paladin, Treygan and Boiko were the ones who submitted clerics. Just a heads up.

*Rechecks the characters*

Well, That'll teach me to make pre-coffee decisions. Is either Darius or Caladrian willing to respec to a different Class? If not, it can be worked with. Never had 2 paladins in the same party before. :)

Iron Dice: Ranger might work though I'm not going to penalize any choices you make, class-wise.

To All: I have 5 players in the running for the 6th slot:
Edrec
Treygan
Boiko
Iron Dice
Gellius

Did I miss anyone?
