Okay, so that is a move action to dismount. Gaius is Hasted and 40' away from a giant of his choice, with a standard action available.

Bran really doesn't want the walls to fall and definitely doesn't want to dismount. Can you grapple something while riding to occupy one of their throwing arms? I don't think my accuracy is good enough on a prone target.

There are still 2 giants upright that Bran could attack if he wanted.

I do not think he can grapple a Large grounded target while riding a Huge flying mount. It seems like he would have to dismount to do so.

@Gaius - is that +4 from attacking a prone target, or are you assuming that Flame got into flanking position?

Unsure wether the prone modifiers to hit for ranged combat and melee apply to giants. They're a bit larger after all even when prone^^

Hamailii bites her lip as she sees all her arrows miss and seeing one of the rangers heavily wounded, she flies over to heal him.

Not sure how that would go over, but if possible i would use the CLW wand right now and later a channel when more are in range who can profit.

You can do a full attack with your bow while mounted. Remember you also have a Hasted attack.

If your mount takes a single move, there is no attack penalty.

It could do a single move and attack, but then would end the turn adjacent to a giant (well, 10' away, within the giant's reach).

Giant Owls have Improved Disarm and a base +13 CMD (+15 disarm), with Inspire Courage for another +2, so that might be worth a try. Or not.

@Bran - you can drop the bow as a free action, then still get a move and a standard (or I'll call it a charge with a grapple, as you can do with Constable). Trellara's owl can pick up the bow for you on her turn. Does that sound good? And do you want Blue to also attack the giant?

If you're fine with dropping the bow and letting someone else catch it I'll do that and call it a charge. Thought bringing the owl in was free because it's it's own creature. Yeah Blue can get in also, he's tanker than me apparently.

I assumed it was Bran's move and not Blue's because of the Acrobatics check to avoid AOOs. Like you were leaping off the owl while he was staying out of reach (Blue only needs to be 10' away to attack, so doesn't need to risk AOOs - Bran does). Trellara can pick up the bow off the ground no problem even if she can't catch it in mid-air.

Bran makes a bold flying tackle from off of his owl, and just barely gets in there before the giant can react.
Hit the CMD exactly, which means the Dare was the difference! The bonus to Jump checks does not apply to the "avoid AOOs" part of Acrobatics.

Bran grabs hold of the giant, who can now no longer use his greatsword.

Trellara ceases her song (trying to save rounds for what could be a long night) and lets it linger in the air. She swoops down and grabs Bran's bow.

"Bran! Get out of there!" shouts Trellara. "Blue can pick you up!" If Bran has maintained the grapple, he can try for 2 grapple checks to damage, and Tal'ariel and Blackthorn can both get an attack in - all that should be enough to drop the giant, so Blue can pick up Bran and fly away this round. Why are those so hard to hit? It's not that they are small...
Hamailii curses and seems a bit down since most of her arrows don't hit, but she keeps firing, taking better aim.

Nice a double crit, maybe worth the low numbers before :D

Bran grapples the giant, injuring it. Two of Hamailii's arrows hit, one through the eye and killing the giant instantly.

Gaius and Flame take down the other.

Bran's owl Blue grabs him in one talon and flies away (60').
Hamailii's owl Startail also moves back towards Brindol.
Frost grabs Gaius in one talon and Flame in the other, and moves away.
Trellara's owl Sprite picks up Bran's bow and moves back towards Brindol; the bard herself takes a shot at the incoming horde.
The hunters do likewise, and also move back.

All of their arrows together manage to take down one of the hobgoblin soldiers.

The remaining soldiers have their bows out, so are clearly going to advance and fire. Tal'ariel's action happens just before theirs so we'll see what she does. They are in a wide line, four ranks deep and 25 soldiers across, but spaced 10' apart. A Stinking Cloud would catch 11 of them.

"Nice work, time to go!"

Tal'ariel drops a stinking cloud on top of the soldiers advancing their way. Partly to incapacitate them, but also partly just to block their line of sight for a moment. And Blackthorn takes her back with the group.

In the hail of arrows, a few strike Blue, but the owl keeps flying.

Any future rounds would probably be much the same - they could keep firing as you stretch the distance, still needing 20's to hit. So perhaps there are few more arrows that strike one owl or another, but not enough to drop them.

Within a couple of minutes, the party is back in Brindol. Will update more later, just giving you all a chance to react.

Frost drops Gaius and Flame on the nearest battlement, mostly because Flame is squirming madly in the owl's talons and making the trip near impossible for everyone. Gaius immediately moves to calm his familiar down, coaxing her back into her smaller form and into his snug cloak before remounting Frost to join the rest of the group.

Hamailii seems a bit pale, but also smiles.
This is just the beginning! We could handle those giants well enough, but the corps of soldiers would have shot us out of the sky i guess. We really need to be careful. A full out war battle is something different than the little skirmishes we had so far. I'm really scared, scared for all of us here.
She grasps her butterfly amulet and murmurs a prayer to Desna, closing her eyes for a moment.

Then, with a flash of insight, she opens them again.
If only we could turn invisible and shoot invisbly from the sky!

Such battles are always a paradise for magic users with area effect spells or even melees with whirlwind strike.

Oh, I don't know about that, Hamailii - these hobgoblins spread out for a reason. A Fireball would only catch 11, and the regulars have enough HP to usually withstand 5d6 even on a failed save. There's no easy win here even with different builds...

You hear a clamor from across the city. Shouts on the western side.
Hamailii winces as a voice shouts in her head.

Hamailii:
You hear the voice of Lord Jarmaath. "Breach! Breach at the Western Gate! Lars, reinforce! Lady Sellyria, send hunters! Hamailii, bring your group!"

Can we assume we had time to heal up before starting our next battle?
Tal'ariel heals Gaius with a couple taps of her Infernal Healing wand.

16 charges left.

As Hamailii warns them of the new danger, Tal'ariel sets off for their next destination. "Damn it, a breach already? This could be a real problem."

Sure, on the way back. And you also have time for a stop in a store if you wish.
Magic Items: Many of Brindol’s shopkeepers, merchants, and adventurers have donated potions, scrolls, and wands to the cause. The PCs are allowed to draw upon these resources, to a limited extent. Any potions, scrolls, or wands are available, in any quantity or combination, as long as the total value of items they take over the course of the various battlefield events does not exceed 5,000 gp. The PCs cannot access these items during an event but can do so in the downtime between events as they wish.

Hamailii suddenly stops dead, looking confused at first, then holding her head as a shocked expression enters her face.

The...the...there's a breach at the Western Gate! They call for us! Quick, we are needed there!
She turns, heading for her owl.

Gaius is gathering some supplies when Hamailii's warning comes.

You start to mount up, when with a tremendous BOOM! a building down the street bursts into flame.

There are shouts from soldiers - some panicking and running, some trying to fight the flames.

And in the distance, the mighty form of Abithriax, the red dragon you saw over Cinder Hill. (I'll say he is 300' away and 60' up.)

Another message resonates in Hamailii's head.

Hamailii:
"The dragon! Slay the beast - we will try to hold the Western Gate."

Map is up - but dragon is actually off the map right now.

The dragon looks to be circling around to go for another pass at the area he is strafing.

Oh no! It's the dragon! We'll need to slay him! They ask us to fight him while they try to hold the gate...

There's a slight impression of panic forming on Hamailiis face as she points towards the dragon in the sky.

A moment later, sharply inhaling, she refocuses with a prayer to Desna.
Oh great song of the spheres, lend us your power, lend us your grace, protect us from this evil fires craze!
She motions everyone to come to her and then casts a spell.
This will protect us from his fire to a degree, for some time.

Communal resist energy fire, obviously. Should be fire resistance 20 for an overall 70 minutes split between us evenly, since i count as caster level 7.

Hamailii, are you warding the owls as well, or sending them away?
Never mind: Communal Spells: Communal spells function like other spells, except they allow you to divide the duration among multiple targets, treating each target as a subject of the spell. When you divide the duration, you must divide it as evenly as possible among the targets. Furthermore, unless the communal spell's description indicates otherwise, no target can receive a duration increment smaller than the smallest increment of duration listed in the spell description. For example, if you are 5th level, your communal spell's duration is 10 minutes per level, and you have four targets, each target must receive 10 minutes of duration. The extra 10 minute duration can go to one of the four targets or it is wasted.
So you can cover 7 targets. 4 PCs, Trellara, and Flame, I would guess, and 1 owl if you want.

If Bran's owl wants it, can also get some Infernal Healing from Tal'ariel. Same for any other injuries. She would offer the same to the injured hunter.

"That is definitely some trouble! Bran--we'll try some of the same tricks we did to beat that dragon from before!"

Tal'ariel's first response is to pull out a scroll and cast it. At it's conclusion, Bran feels lightweight--he can fly on his own if he so chooses. Draw and use Scroll of Fly.

The hunters have a couple of CLW potions each, and will be fine. Do you want them to stay with you for this encounter, or go reinforce the Western Gate?
