Oro-Tu |

Our two best sailors are in surgeon and navigator positions. Can one fill two positions? Also is there a 'first mate' position? What's that entail?

brvheart |

FASB does not cover everything unfortunately and this is where we turn to S&S for some roles:
Boatswain: The boatswain, or bosun (pronounced “bosun” either way), is responsible for the upper deck of the vessel and above. This makes the boatswain accountable for all rope, rigging, anchors, and sails. At the start of the day, the boatswain and those under her weigh anchor, raise
the sails and report on the general condition of the ship’s deck to the captain. As she oversees many of the ship’s basic daily labors, the boatswain is often responsible for keeping discipline and dispensing punishment.
Cook: While the quartermaster normally allocates the rations, the cook and his apprentices make and distribute meals to the crew. Although some better-outfitted vessels employ skilled cooks to attend to the captain and the officers, many cooks are drawn from crew members who have suffered crippling injuries, allowing them to still serve even after such trauma.
Master-at-Arms: Concerned with the security of the ship, the fitness of the crew, and the dispensing of justice, the master-at-arms typically is one of the most feared and dreaded of a ship’s officers.
Master Gunner: The master gunner is in charge of all shipboard artillery, ensuring moisture and rust don’t ruin the weapons and that the crew knows how to use them. On board ships with firearms, the master gunner maintains
the vessel’s cannons, firearms, and powder supplies; on ships without such weapons, she maintains the ballistas, catapults, and so on.
Quartermaster: The quartermaster oversees the supplies and items stored aboard the ship. She maintains the supplies of food and weaponry, oversees the disbursement of food to the cook, and doles out the rum ration to the crew.
Now these roles are for a pirate ship, but they still largely apply to any ship.

brvheart |

And yes, players can fill multiple roles. Will get the First Mate.
An officer on a merchant ship ranking immediately below the captain.

brvheart |

A somewhat useful link
Pirate roles
Could probably use some more crew, yes but wanted to get you started and let you all fill it out. Kara (Aurora) is working on her notes now.

Oro-Tu |

Oro-Tu could probably handle something not really aailory, like master at arms and away team. I think Ivar should be in charge of actual ship combat team if that's what that means? What you and Ivar think? Though with Ivar being true neutral he might be better for the 'justice' thing.

brvheart |

I forgot that Aurora leveled also. So only Ivar and Uraisa are 7th, but not by much.

Oro-Tu |

Hey guys DM was talking in roll20. This adventure is a bit above our level, so move this along, Sorten (the LG guy we were supposed to kill if we took the other guys offer) is going to craft some of the stuff so that it's all finished and we will have it during the adventure instead of having to wait X days.
He said to consider everything finished, and leialoha's rods at market, and be ready to go adventuring.

Oro-Tu |

No he said there will be minor stuff before then that will definitely level you two before any of the bigger stuff comes our way.

brvheart |

We will take a week off the calendar and advance the timeline. Everything will be fine with it Silas. I have it planned out already. Will do the side adventure when you get back. You spent the week hiring crew and getting repairs done to the Thunderstrike.

brvheart |

Do we need to level to 8, if we are playing up in level?
It is even possible that you may level roleplaying:) There will be ample opportunity to do so with Tame.

Silas Frey |

Got a big meeting to speak at tomorrow so my typing up what I need to on the ship is probably getting delayed. If needs be I'll take a laptop into Wednesday's meeting and type up stuff there.

brvheart |

Not a big rush. You just need to be working on it as time permits so the ship is finished when you get back.

Beth Macara |

brvheart |

Oh, at least! But I have new players to spring it on:) We need to get them vested in the people here.

Ivar "Goldilocks" Theodinson |
As Ivar turned his obsidian war-axe over to one of Samuel apprentice’s he added ”now you wizards take good care of Rhea.” the assistant raised an eyebrow and asked ”Rhea?” Ivar smiled with his lips though it did not reach his eyes and repeated ”Rhea, named her after a girl.” The young man raised his other eyebrow. Ivar continued ”it’s a long story.” the Apprentice, reasonably board and ready for a good story, swept his arm in the general direction of a work stool and said ”do tell” Ivar sat down and began his story.
”Rhea, was my first love, or at least my first crush. She was three or four summers older than me she was a ..well” Ivar paused for a moment thinking, settling on the stool he continued ”Let me start from the beginning. When I was little my family lived in the far north in the fiords, scraping out a living by tearing farm land out of the forest and bogs, We were very well of, in comparison to some, My grandfather was a famous Jarl and my uncle would inherit his entire farm. While we lived at grandfathers estate there was a slave or thane which took care of the goats. Her name was Kendra Lorrimo, a beautiful woman, even after the difficult life she led at my grandfather’s house. She was not from our people and had been taken on a slave raid, but grandfather considered her too beautiful to sell. She spent her first several weeks in our community as part of the entertainment for the Jarl and his houscarls. When she was sent to the farm she was already heavy with child. She had some experience with goats so she and her daughter, after her, became out goat herders.”
Ivar tips his head a little to the side raising his eyebrows and continues ”It wasn’t until years later, when I fully understood what happened to woman slaves that I understood that Rhea may have been my aunt” He gives a gentle shrug of his shoulders and continues ” As my father raided into the soft civilized south he realized that there was plenty of land for people with his, shall we say skill set, so my father took the opportunity to become a land owner in one of the southern nations. When our family sailed there Kendra and her daughter Rhea sailed with us. I don’t know if they were a gift from my grandfather the Jarl or if father purchased them, either way mother did not seem pleased. During the voyage was when I really noticed her for the first time. I don’t know if it was the close proximity, or the fact we just weren’t on the farm or that there was little work to keep us busy. Of course coming into the age when you start to notice girls certainly didn’t hurt.” His voice trails almost to a whisper I remember the strawberry blond hair blowing in the wind, ocean spray misting on her skin causing it to glisten the shape of her..” Ivar stopped speaking abruptly, putting on a strangely stern face and continued his story.
”the country my fathers farm was in was beautiful rolling hills near the ocean so my Father could ply his trade with other likeminded northerners. It was over a hundred acres, much smaller than My grandfather’s estate and so Rhea and her mother lived in a small hut nearby. Also a peculiarity of this nation, they had serfs of their own but not “slaves’ so Rhea became an ‘indentured servant’ along with her mother and they received a stipend, which was a small percentage of the goats as well as free room and board. Those next three or four years were like heaven. After my work was done I was allowed to play. I would watch her as she worked. Some time at dusk I would even follow her around and help bring the goats into the corral. We would talk, some would have called it flirting, but I wasn’t that sophisticated yet. She always had a new bracelet or necklace to show me, I was happy for her, I assumed that in the south goat herding was a lucrative job. I dreamed that being a farmer wouldn’t be horrendous if I had Rhea with me.“
Ivar turned to smile at the wizard, but his eyes were sad and only one side of his lips seemed to be interested. ”T was my fourteenth summer, so maybe her seventeenth or eighteenth. I was out chopping wood, I heard my mother and father fighting as they often did. But this time it escalated; my father was leaving the building, ducking ceramic flat wear that was flying out the door at him. My mother was screaming. “She must leave, both of them. I will stand for no more of your bastards within my sight, this is not your father’s house it is mine!” I continued chopping wood, had I stopped I would have received a beating from one of them. Later that night I found out from my older sister that Rhea was pregnant with my father’s bastard. All the necklaces and trinkets had been gifts, a sort of payment, for her affection. In the morning they were gone. Rhea her mother, a full half of the goats and my father, he and my older brother had gone a’viking, father to avoid my mother’s wrath my brother, well it was his first raid. When father and Ingvar returned nothing was said, it was all forgotten by everyone.”
Ivar walked back over and lifted the war-axe one handed, straight out, like he was pointing a pistol and continued ”It was that summer I vowed to never be a farmer. I would return to the sea that I loved. I also vowed to always remember that a woman’s heart could be as hard as stone.” He smiles a little this time touching his eyes and said.”So I think frost is the proper attack for Rhea, because she can be as cold as ice.” He sets the axe back on the work table and nodding, smiles as he walks out of the shop.

brvheart |

Note: Kara (Aurora) has her infirmed uncle here with us at present and is helping care for him so her posting rate will be a little slow for awhile. She will post as she can every few days.
Nice story about Rhea Ivar!

brvheart |

Ok Silas. Hopefully everything will be all cleared up on our end soon.

brvheart |

With seven players we can do without a player or two for awhile, but rather tough to get into any serious combat without Leailoha.

Leialoha |

Sorry for the disappearance. Week in Europe for work, then a week of catch-up and now I'm on vacation. As long as things don't fly too fast I should be able to keep up. We've had spotty internet here around Lake Champlain today, but I think I'll be fine when we reach Quebec City tomorrow. As for magic for Leialoha, he'll plan to send out for the equipment. I think we determined he can only afford one of the rods right now, so let's go with the maximize rod and he can look into the regular selective later.

brvheart |

Not a problem Leialoha:) Quebec is a beautiful city! Haven't been there since I was a kid though. The wife and I were in Montreal in 2003.

Oro-Tu |

the DM handwaived the rods leialoha to speed things up (we owe the LG mage a favor instead of weird cat stevens guy). You should have both rods and the ring you wanted, so lets rock and roll.

Silas Frey |

Guys I will be trying to post later, but work is absolutely mental and I have to deal with various things today.
Silas' initial ideas:
How to address why we have Mercy's ship to Tame?
Roles and why we are entering Turmoil?
How we engage with Tame? What do we know about how he might react?
I would suggest we try to attract as little attention as possible - that's probably Silas' background coming into play.

brvheart |

Mercy just bought the Capricious so that should not be an issue.
He is a complete brute, bore or annoy him and you might get eaten!
Actually if you don't do something to attract his attention you will never get to talk to him!
You will learn more and get to gather info when you actually get into the Armada.

Ivar "Goldilocks" Theodinson |
were looking for treasure, going to go steal one of his enemies hoard, nothing works like the truth, we'll get through, just might not be let back once we get it.
We could say we got the info from capt. Mercy and knew that she would never dare to get it herself and we were going to get it instead, all true. we could even promise him a cut, we would get through, but we will have to deal with him going home I assume.

Oro-Tu |

Sounds like we need to buy a scroll of nondetection or whatever it is for whoever is going to talk to the guy.
