You carefully cross the bridge but see nothing of note.

No sooner are you all across than you sense movement behind you. Appearing out of thin air is an emaciated figure that looks like a horned human skeleton smothered within a bone-tight hide of slimy leather. It is holding a longspear.

This looks out of odds with the creatures you've encountered so far - there is nothing golden about it whatsoever.

Initiatives...

Grob: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15
Talarin: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8

DC16 Knowledge (arcana or dungeoneering) or DC12 (planes) check:

It's a babau demon

The creature has the drop on you and uses it's reach to hit Rumha with its spear.

OK, round one - and Rumha takes 17hp of damage - ouch. Grob, then the creature, then you can all act. It's 10 feet away from you by the way (so if you want to engage in melee, you know the rules

Grob manages to land a good blow on the creature. In return it clobbers him back with its spear.

Rain's whip snakes out but despite catching the spear, the creature is able to hold on to his weapon.

Rumha casts a spell, as does Heledar - whilst Rythanus moves to a more advantageous position.

New round - Grobn the creature up

Male Half Orc Druid 4 (HP: 24/31; AC 19, (t11, ff17); F+5,R+2,W+7; init +1/Per +12)

Grob lands a huge blow on the creature. It's certainly done a lot of damage but it continues to fight regardless.

And clearly seeing Grob as its main foe, it picks on his to retaliate. It's spear lands on target, clearly hurting Grob.

Grob takes 13hp of damage - the rest of you can go now...

My bad from last round, so I'll ignore it but this round Grob, make a DC18 Reflex save. If you fail, your weapon takes 6 points of acid damage from the creature's blood; if this damage penetrates the weapon's hardness, it gains the broken condition

Male Half Orc Druid 4 (HP: 24/31; AC 19, (t11, ff17); F+5,R+2,W+7; init +1/Per +12)

Grobradon was just healed, and now he's wounded again as the demon decides he's the big threat.

Oddly, that's of less concern to him than the sudden realization that acid like blood could really hurt his baby.

Reflex save 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

I'm not sure what the hardness of a masterwork great sword is, but I do know we may see a grown half orc cry before this fight is done ;)

I believe the hardness is 10hp. It's still in one piece but no doubt sizzling!

Rythan cursed under his breath, the words abruptly flowing into the syllables of a spell. His sword began to glow with a bluish light, frost crackling along the blade.

It has reach with that spear, Rythanus so if you're close enough to 5-ft step, you'll probably need to cast defensively if you don't want to provoke from the spell.

Rythanus steps forward and swings his scimitar, the metal glowing blue. The blade connects and does typical damage but also imparts some magical damage too - the creature reacting to whatever spell Rythanus cast.

Once more Talarin allows her whip to flick at the creature's spear. This time it's successful and the weapon clatters to the floor.

Correct you are again sir! Fey foundling on Heledar will mean he actually heals 17 points of damage - with GM Birch permission, and since the action has not moved ahead, I will retcon my action, since there is no need for me to heal myself :D

Math: Heledar started at 45/50hp -> took 10 (Grob and Rumha healed 5 each) -> 35 hp -> Rumha channeled -> 50h/50hp -> Took 5 and healed Grob for another 5 -> Is now at 45/50hp

So instead of using LoH on himself, Heledar will try to position himself to flank, and attack

Cold Iron Bardiche Attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19<-+2 if flanking is possible
Damage if it hits: 1d10 + 12 ⇒ (4) + 12 = 16

Rumha produces a floating chain of force with hooks at each end and manages to wrap it around the demon's legs and knock it prone.

Heledar is able to take advantage of this to get into position and hit the creature with his bardiche. The creature looks really wounded now.

Heledar, make a DC18 Reflex save. If you fail, your weapon takes 6 points of acid damage from the creature's blood

New round, the creature is weakened. Grob, then the creature then the rest of you

Male Half Orc Druid 4 (HP: 24/31; AC 19, (t11, ff17); F+5,R+2,W+7; init +1/Per +12)

His blade endangered, Grobradon lets loose a sigh, "I'm sorry, Master smith... thank you for the gift." And he strikes

To hit, bless included 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (1) + 13 = 14
dmg:2d6 + 9 ⇒ (5, 2) + 9 = 16

Reflex save for blade if it hits 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21

Did Grob pull his blow to save his blade or was it just a poor effort? You'll never know - but what is true is that Grob's sword tastes nothing but thin air.

Ignoring the spear on the ground, the creature lunges at Grob - teeth and claws flashing. One of its claws makes contact, tearing a hole in Grob's mail.

Grob takes 9hp

With his scimitar smoking from the last attack on the demon, and his magic running low, Rythan decided that his best bet was to ensure that the thing was distracted when Grob dealt out vengeance. He harried the monster, keeping its attention split between them without ever pressing the attack.

Rythan looked around for something to wipe his still slightly smoking blade on, and finally settled for a polishing rag. He threw it away with a frown of disgust as it absorbed the last of the demon's acid, large holes appearing in the fabric. "Heledar is right. We haven't seen any cultists' bodies - maybe we're taking the hard way? But if we scout around for another path, we lose time and risk triggering more traps." He sighed, his teeth clenched in frustration.

"Let's go," he said as he followed Heledar, resigned.

Rythanus:

It has been niggling on your mind since you saw the demon, but it seems out of odds with what you've seen so far. You have no proof of course, but the lack of gold and the fact that it's a demon makes you wonder if it was a trap that is part of the defences or a trap set by someone else...

You dust yourself off and progress along the only route that is possible.

Finally you reach the gates to the city’s Second Ring. Standing there are two hulking skeletons in shining golden breastplates, their thick
bones plated with gold. Their huge, gold-plated halberds are crossed in front of the gate, barring the way forward.

You're at F

This has been bothering you. There is a seed of logic forming in your mind. At some point the rightful owner of the treasure may wish to return, and would it be logical for them to have to fight their way through? You don't know what the answer is but you feel you're on the right lines...

Nodding at his companion, he adds - "I guess there isn't much that we can do about it. But you're still right - we haven't found any bodies, or traces of combat, so they must be bypassing what we ran into somehow."

I don't suppose Rythan can remember any password or pass-sign from the scribblings on the wall at the entrance to the city?

When they reached the guards of the gate, Rythan took a moment to catch his breath and eye them from a distance. "I don't suppose we could tell them we're just traveling merchants passing through," he quipped. "If we're going up against them, I think I'd like to borrow that wand again..."
