Planescape - The Blood War (Inactive)

Game Master Tourach

Working for the baatezu the PCs are in over their heads. Can they still make their mark on the Blood War and the multiverse on the whole?

Hykan the Traveller ready for stat perusing.

No story yet other than he will be bargaining for access to the Infernal realms, as Celestian dictates that we must travel everywhere.

Questions/responses:

Traits - It is a weird wording for Pathfinder, but alternate racial traits don't count as "Traits". The Traits that you can take two of are just free bonuses, the alternate racials replace some things.

Mystic Past Life - I don't have any issue with that trait. My requirements would be that the spells chosen must not be on your list (for example, a wizard couldn't use it to take a Bard version of a wizard spell to get it at a lower level) and I reserve the right to veto individual spell choices if they really are out there.

Edit:

I encourage people to keep the applications flowing. Our selection so far is fairly narrow - we've got a very large number of partial casters, but only a single full caster of either kind (or Oracle) so far. No pure frontliner/martial characters either. So there's still a lot of room for just about any "party role" to put in an application and really shine.

Made an alias and picked a name. Blood rager is plenty a front liner.

Silver Crusade

I created a human fighter that is a member of the Mercykiller Facton. Since Demons are chaotic lawless bastards who commit numerous crimes she has no problem fighting them in battle and showing no mercy in their destruction. We need some more melee combat characters I think and I built her to be a Polearm Master so she's good at holding her ground and whacking things with her big weapon.

Glad to see more applications as well as completed applications. Just wanted to remind people that if you haven't done it yet, please ensure that you include a contract summary. For those less interested in exposition, the real core I'm looking for is what you are offering to the devils that would pique their interest and what you are expecting in return.

Hykan has cross list spells listed. No attempted cheesyness like haste at lvl 2 from sorcerer.

Seems like Guvners aka Fraternity of Order appears best for Haruk.

Kata is bowing out due to RL concerns. Good luck everyone.

Sorry after the last post but I'll bow out too, i got suprise accepted to another game I'd thought done and dusted, which I'd put alot of work into. So I'll stop here before I get in over my head.

Okay, so I'll throw my hat into the ring.

Crunch is in the profile, but the TLDR version is that nipper is a goblin Knife master/scout rogue, that'll eventually go into vivisectionist alchemist.

Background:

Fingernipper is a Mercykiller agent. His usual duties involved the tracking and apprehension of the guilty so that they might be properly punished for their crimes. During the course of what had been up to that point a routine operation, the target that he and his team had been pursuing, one Bartrand Nimbles, managed to escape their clutches by throwing himself out of a window to perish on the unforgiving cobbles below.

Even death is no bar to the justice of the Mercykillers and the faction managed to determine the final resting location of the Mr. Nimbles' soul, oozing in the muck of one of the many layers a of hell. Some negotiation with the baatezu landed the soul back into the Mercykillers hands. Fingernipper, having led the team that had let Nimbles escape in the first place, had the dubious honour as serving as collateral for the villain's soul and now finds himself in service to the agents of Hell.

Contract:

A soul for a soul. The lords of Hell do bequeath into the possession of the Mercykillers the soul of one former Bartrand Nimbles (Party A). In exchange, the Mercykillers provide the services of one Fingernipper(Party B) to use as they deem necessary to advance their goals. This service shall continue until the soul of Party A is returned. In the event of the untimely death of Party B during the course of fulfilling the terms of this contract, its service shall be released and Party B's soul shall no longer be affiliated with the Dukes of Hell or any of their agents.

Background:
Spoiler:
Tanith was not always a paranoid vishkanya, in fact she was quite happy as a child until her brother’s death. While out playing one day her brother dropped dead, of course none of the adults believed her, playing among the rooftops as they were wont to do her brothers body had fallen from such a height that it was easy to believe that he had fallen to his death. Since Sigil is a place where the truth is affected by belief, this conception was repeated enough that it became truth. Tanith was desperate to find someone to believe her, someone who could find who had killed her brother and why, and more importantly someone who would be able to help protect her family from this threat. She finally found someone willing to listen to a young girl’s ranting, a mysterious man in a thick black cloak that barely masked the chill air surrounding him. He soon returned to her in the company of a small disgusting creature with the torso of a child and the body of a disgusting fly. The fly creature produced a scroll that the man insisted would ensure protection to her family for certain “considerations.” Blinded by a desire to protect her family, a desire to avenge her brother, and ignorant of the workings of the devils, she signed the scroll. As mentioned before Sigil works off of belief and strong will, a single strong willed individual can will a person out of existence, but the strongest mortal will pales in comparison to that of an archdevil. And when a mortal signs a contract accepting that will, it can easily turn a human into a serpentine humanoid that would be far more useful to a prince of the lower plains. Forced away from her family, how to explain your daughter suddenly changing race? She was forced to resort to thievery to survive, guided by her dark patron into a more befitting mentality. The betrayal brought about from a powerful entity who preyed on her naïve altruism partnered with the destitute conditions in which she grew up has shaped her into a manipulative distrusting creature. Loyal only to the patron whom shaped her into her current form, which suits him just fine.

Contract:
Spoiler:

Fourth
The Indentured shall immediately be hunted down and brought to the court of The Archduke and compelled to complete the task ordered, The Archduke may also punish The Indentured at his discretion with any of the above punishments or death.

One more question, what is your policy on updating 3.5 prestige classes to pathfinder? I ask because I haven't selected my 1st level feat and you answer will affect what feat I choose.

We're going to use entirely Pathfinder rules, so no 3.5 ports to Pathfinder.

Silver Crusade

As for the reason she is working with the Devils she has been assigned to track down a Demon, a Glabrezu by the name of Inmarak who escaped justice in Sigil. Inmarak is wanted for a large score of different crimes, some committed by himself, others indirectly by granting wishes from ambitious people in the city. His worst crime was he granted a wish to bring back to "life" a lover of a Sigil Nobleman, only to bring his lover back as a vampire. The vampiress turned the nobleman into a vampire and then the pair unleashed a plague of vampire spawn on the city. This forced the intervention of several law-abiding factions to clean up the mess. While the vampires were destroyed, the investigation revealed Inmarak's involvement. Faced with a number of factions out for his hide, Inmarak fled Sigil. Katrin now has been assigned to find Inmarak and see that he pays for his crimes. Thus an alliance with the Devils is needed to track this Demon down and defeat him.

Scarab Sages

As one of the pre-selected players I thought I'd chime in and mention that I'm leaning towards playing a Wizard. I may change my mind depending on what final submissions we get, but if that helps anyone, there you go.

Okay… here is my last minute submission! Hope he’s not too late to be considered — I’m a big Planescape fan, but it took me a while to think of an idea that felt sufficiently appropriate and fun in a novel way.

One question: Would Breadth of Experience be acceptable for an Aasimar? This table gives Aasimar living longer than Gnomes, and almost as long as Elves, but the feat was printed before the ARG introduced Aasimars. If not, I’ll replace it with something else.

Quick Summary:
Marvin Crofter
LN Aasimar (Lawbringer) Magus (Hexcrafter)
Age: 160; Occupation: Bounty Hunter (Formerly: Barrister)

Party Role:
-Hit things with spells for lots of damages
-Will get Weapon Finess, Panache Arcana at level 3 and then fight like a swashbuckler
-Knowledge and profession skills, decent diplomacy, character has a very intelligent/creative personality and would be generally investigative-y

Story:

Marvin was born, over a century ago, as a singular, special child. He bore a keen interest in rules, honor, and justice, inspired by the shining example of a mysterious, absent father he had only met once. Marvin excelled at his studies, as well as fencing, penmanship, and other physical tasks he could best through skill over strength.

Over the decades, he traveled from place to place, building careers as a merchant, jeweler, tinker, but eventually settling into a legal career, where he gained renown as a skilled and eternally enthusiastic barrister and man of letters. He also fostered a bit of a magic hobby—although never combat trained, he learned how to amuse at parties with light spells and deliver small curses to former friends he caught cheating at cards.

Justice is justice — and if Marvin learned one thing over his extraordinarily long life, it was that the world was cruel, and sometimes justice had to be as well. By aasimar standards, he was not a kind or caring man, despite his best efforts to uphold and prosecute the law.

And eventually, one final injustice dawned on him: that, though its progress was slow, he was nevertheless aging, and would, in only a handful of decades, wither into a worthless old man and die. But Marvin knew he deserved to find a way to live, and so he pored over the most esoteric texts he could get his hands on, corresponding with Asmodeus worshippers and the more erudite sort of necromancer.

Eventually, Marvin attempted a summoning, hoping to bring forth an outsider he could convince to grant him extra years of youth in exchange for… something. Instead, he brought himself somewhere else.

But rules are rules, and Marvin found a way to adapt quickly to his new home in the City of Sigil. The City of Doors has always had need for the sort of expert who can draw up a detailed, clever contract quickly, without flinching at the terrifying creature commissioning the work. And so he soon found himself working for Hell, first as a notary and then as an enforcer, willing to accept any ethical quandaries necessary to strike a carefully-crafted, intelligent blow at the forces of Chaos.
[/story

[spoiler=Contract]
I the Undersigned, Marvin Crofter, recognize and acknowledge that there is no complicated contract that neither I nor my employer is not skilled enough to find fault with. Instead, I write and submit this petition myself, knowing with full confidence what I volunteer for.

To demonstrate my skills, I pledge my service to Hell in the fulfillment of specific tasks as it may see fit to offer me. Each such task I will be given to accept of my own free will, under no charm or compulsion, and with no penalty inflicted in case of forfeiture or failure. I recognize payment for such tasks is not to be always expected; though any payment promised must be procured upon completion.

My aim is this: Demonstrating my effectiveness as an agent of Order and Law, I hope to prove vulnerable enough to my employers that they provide me with tools and protection to carry out further tasks; and, furthermore, that they will do what they can to extend my life span if it proves useful to their interests.

This contract is only valid while I still remain alive, unmutilated, and possessing my own free will. Should an agent acting for or at the wishes of Hell decide to betray me through an act of treachery that breaks this contract and results in my death, I knowingly consign my soul to the Abyss, to fight for the loathed Tanar’ri in the Blood War unless or until revived by healing magic, hoping that such a violation clause will provide an additional incentive against deceit.

Abridged stats:

Race:
Aasimar - Lawbringer (Archon-Blooded, +2 Con, +2 Wis)
Exalted Resistance: Gain SR 5 + Lvl vs Evil Outsiders’ abilities, replaces Energy Resistance
Immortal Spark - Replaces Skill bonus and SLA, gains Lesser Age Resistance 1/day
Scion of Humanity - Appear human

Traits:
Magical Lineage (Shocking Grasp) - My one concession to needing fight power
Honeyed Tongue - For flavor (no pun intended0

Feats:
Breadth of Experience (all Knowledge, Profession skills usable untrained)

Ability scores:
(Note: Aging penalties applied; Lesser Age Resistance, once cast, gives +1 Str, Dex and Con, but without it he’s a bit weaker)

Str 10
Dex 15
Con 13
Int 18
Wis 14
Cha 12

HP: 10; AC: 17; Fort +4, Ref +3, Will +4

Starting Gear: Chain shirt, Rapier, Sling, Lots of writing equipment

Favored class: +1 skill point

I prefer to pick spells, skills, etc. after seeing party lineup; but Marvin will definitely be trained in Diplomacy, Knowledges, Survival/Sense Motive, and Profession Lawyer, and his favorite spell is almost certainly Brand (thanks to Hexcrafter).

Okay equipment all picked out, not too much but based on how he got tricked into signing on to being somebodies guard it makes sense that he's carrying around a decent bit of gold. Once again Rission

Bardic Knowledge (Ex)
A bard adds half his class level (minimum 1) to all Knowledge skill checks and may make all Knowledge skill checks untrained.
Bardic Performance
A bard is trained to use the Perform skill to create magical effects on those around him, including himself if desired. He can use this ability for a number of rounds per day equal to 4 + his Charisma modifier. At each level after 1st a bard can use bardic performance for 2 additional rounds per day. Each round, the bard can produce any one of the types of bardic performance that he has mastered, as indicated by his level.
Starting a bardic performance is a standard action, but it can be maintained each round as a free action. Changing a bardic performance from one effect to another requires the bard to stop the previous performance and start a new one as a standard action. A bardic performance cannot be disrupted, but it ends immediately if the bard is killed, paralyzed, stunned, knocked unconscious, or otherwise prevented from taking a free action to maintain it each round. A bard cannot have more than one bardic performance in effect at one time.
At 7th level, a bard can start a bardic performance as a move action instead of a standard action. At 13th level, a bard can start a bardic performance as a swift action.
Each bardic performance has audible components, visual components, or both.
If a bardic performance has audible components, the targets must be able to hear the bard for the performance to have any effect, and many such performances are language dependent (as noted in the description). A deaf bard has a 20% change to fail when attempting to use a bardic performance with an audible component. If he fails this check, the attempt still counts against his daily limit. Deaf creatures are immune to bardic performances with audible components.
If a bardic performance has a visual component, the targets must have line of sight to the bard for the performance to have any effect. A blind bard has a 50% chance to fail when attempting to use a bardic performance with a visual component. If he fails this check, the attempt still counts against his daily limit. Blind creatures are immune to bardic performances with visual components.
List of Bardic Performances:
Countersong (Su): At 1st level, a bard learns to counter magic effects that depend on sound (but not spells that have verbalcomponents.) Each round of the countersong he makes a Perform (keyboard, percussion, wind, string, or sing) skill check. Any creature within 30 feet of the bard (including the bard himself) that is affected by a sonic or language-dependent magical attack may use the bard's Perform check result in place of its saving throw if, after the saving throw is rolled, thePerform check result proves to be higher. If a creature within range of the countersong is already under the effect of a non-instantaneous sonic or language-dependent magical attack, it gains another saving throw against the effect each round it hears the countersong, but it must use the bard's Perform skill check result for the save. Countersong does not work on effects that don't allow saves. Countersong relies on audible components.
Distraction (Su): At 1st level, a bard can use his performance to counter magic effects that depend on sight. Each round of the Distraction, he makes a Perform (act, comedy, dance, or oratory) skill check. Any creature within 30 feet of the bard (including the bard himself) that is affected by an illusion (pattern) or illusion (figment) magical attack may use the bard’sPerform check result in place of its saving throw if, after the saving throw is rolled, the Perform check result proves to be higher. If a creature within range of the Distraction is already under the effect of a non-instantaneous illusion (pattern) orillusion (figment) magical attack, it gains another saving throw against the effect each round it sees the Distraction, but it must use the bard’s Perform check result for the save. Distraction does not work on effects that don’t allow saves. Distraction relies on visual components.
Fascinate (Su): At 1st level, a bard can use his performance to cause one or more creatures to become fascinated with him. Each creature to be fascinated must be within 90 feet, able to see and hear the bard, and capable of paying attention to him. The bard must also be able to see the creatures affected. The Distraction of a nearby combat or other dangers prevents the ability from working. For every three levels a bard has attained beyond 1st, he can target one additional creature with this ability.
Each creature within range receives a Will save (DC 10 + 1/2 the bard’s level + the bard’s Cha modifier) to negate the effect. If a creature’s saving throw succeeds, the bard cannot attempt to fascinate that creature again for 24 hours. If its saving throw fails, the creature sits quietly and observes the performance for as long as the bard continues to maintain it. While fascinated, a target takes a –4 penalty on skill checks made as reactions, such as Perception checks. Any potential threat to the target allows the target to make a new saving throw against the effect. Any obvious threat, such as someone drawing a weapon, casting a spell, or aiming a weapon at the target, automatically breaks the effect.
Fascinate is an enchantment (compulsion), mind-affecting ability. Fascinate relies on audible and visual components in order to function.
Inspire Courage (Su): A 1st level bard can use his performance to inspire courage in his allies (including himself), bolstering them against fear and improving their combat abilities. To be affected, an ally must be able to perceive the bard’s performance. An affected ally receives a +1 morale bonus on saving throws against charm and fear effects and a +1 competence bonus on attack and weapon damage rolls. At 5th level, and every six bard levels thereafter, this bonus increases by +1, to a maximum of +4 at 17th level. Inspire courage is a mind-affecting ability. inspire courage can use audible or visual components. The bard must choose which component to use when starting his performance.

Nora Brim

Background:

Nora should have been more explicit in the contract she signed with the Devils. Even a few more moments would have protected her from the situation she now found herself in. She should have realized they would manipulate the document to their favor.

Instead she found herself staring at the ballroom, filled with all manner of horrors. A tear fell from her eye as she began to sing the next song, manipulating the crowd for her current master, a lieutenant of disgusting preposition. She didn’t know exactly why he needed her talents tonight, but she was sure it would become apparent soon, he did so enjoy crushing her spirit with the results of her actions.

She had thought many times of running away, forsaking the contract, her soul couldn’t be worth the torment they she endured on a daily basis, but they had her sister. In the ultimate manipulation, the Baatezu had taken the contract at it’s word. Imprisoning her sister in a timeless pocket plane, technically protecting her from any harm. It would only take a thought for the devils to dispel the plane, killing her sister instantly if she were to break the contract, and so she was stuck, her sister’s life hinging on her following the damned contract.

Her song began the echoes of the damned accentuating the song into a horrible symphony of pain and misery. She watched helplessly as her current master began his sick game, using her talents to make the other devils more favorable to his intentions, the eternal power struggle of Hell in full force. She stifled a cry as she watched her master drag in another tiefling. His blood and beaten body dragging along the floor, as he effortlessly threw him onto the table before here. ”Come my brethren, Let us celebrate this new found alliance!” Her roared, a sadistic smile on his face as he leered at Nora. They fell on the poor man in front of her with a savagery she didn’t think she would ever get used to.

Her song never wavered though, even when the blood of the tiefling began to splash across her face. It never wavered when one of the lesser demons decided that one tiefling wouldn't satisfy his hunger and looked hungrily up at her. It continued unabated as he lunged for her, his screams of pain joining the echoes of the damned as the power of the contract came into effect reducing the lesser devils to scalding ashes before her eyes.

She sighed quietly as the feast ended, her song coming to it’s conclusion. She still had so long to go. It was their birthday today, they both would have been 20 today. Did her sister age though? She had never found the answer to that question. She took a deep breath, resigned to her fate, knowing that at the end of the contract her bond to both the tanar’ri and the baatezu would be over. Her birth contract nullified by age, and the baatezu one by time.

Background:

Notes on the background:

Her brother died because a man was given immortality, but every time he died another died in his place, her brother was one of them. The immortal has since become mortal and died, and is thus fighting in the blood war. The one who cast the spell on him is a hag imprisoned by the Lady of Pain, as such Baalzebul will never hold up his end of the bargain, additionally by changing her into a different race, Baalzebul made it such that she no longer has any true "blood relatives" for his portion of the contract.

Thank you all for the wide variety of excellent submissions. I'm working on selection now and should have that finished some time tonight. I'll open the discussion thread and make an opening IC post at that time, but I'm going to let things ramp up slowly over the weekend and we'll start in full force once everyone has had the time to chime in.

All,

Final selections are below. We will be adding a wizard (noted above) and a cleric from among the reserved spaces.

The following characters should report to the discussion thread already started. I will post there once I've got a game thread up and running:

Tithinius - Tiefling Oracle
Fingernipper - Goblin Rogue
Katrin Helgunnr - Human Fighter
Nora Brim - Tiefling Bard

If you don't have an alias, please create one before posting in the discussion thread. And if you don't have a Sigilite Faction, I encourage you to pick one - though that can certainly be done in cooperation with other players.

Thank you to all of the submissions, I definitely appreciate the effort that goes into getting an application together!
