Bose' quick slash hits the goblin, slashing an artery!

Critical confirmed!

M Elf 4 Rogue

1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4 crit damage

Goblin 2 takes his readied action, which was to drink a potion.

Drinking a potion provokes an attack of opportunity. Bose has taken his for the round, but Lalandar has not. Do you wish to take the attack Lalandar?

Male Elf Magus (Bladebound) [HP 38, Fort +6, Ref +4, Will +5, CMD 19/16, Init +3, AC 16, touch 13, flat-footed 13, Perc +8]

Sure.. stabby stabby

Rapier: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

assuming damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

Fortune is on the goblin's side as Lalandar's blade fails to completely clear the table between the two of them.

GM Screen:
Escape Attempt: 1d20 ⇒ 14

Goblin 1 struggles to free himself of the entrapping tables for a moment before uncorking a potion of his own and drinking it.

You can hear your allies making their way down the hallway behind you, but the fight appears to be all you.

Pausing to see if either of you have a course you wish Ferrum to take. Otherwise, he will step up and attack Goblin 1 as the closest.

M Elf 4 Rogue

Ferrum should follow his nature

Actually, you two have the goblins in hand and Ferrum can see into the adjacent dark room.

Ferrum follows the fleeing goblin, drawing his falchion as he moves.

GM Screen:
Attack: 1d20 ⇒ 10
Damage: 2d4 ⇒ (4, 1) = 5

With a mighty downward stroke, he drives his blade deep into the goblin's shoulder from behind, piercing a lung before ripping it out.

Within the room, you hear shouts of panic and relief, both in the Goblin language and in Common.

Two voices stand out:

"Oy! You theh - are you 'ere t' kill 's 'r save us? Are y' better than th' one y' kilt?"

and

"Please set us free! I think she needs help soon!"

Male Elf Magus (Bladebound) [HP 38, Fort +6, Ref +4, Will +5, CMD 19/16, Init +3, AC 16, touch 13, flat-footed 13, Perc +8]

Can you update the map so I know where I am with respect to the goblins. I will attempt to attack the one that was on the other half of the flank on Bose. If there is no flank, I'll hit at the one I already cut at and missed.

After the swipe went by, Lalandar will attempt to cut deep. Using a point from his arcane pool, he will get a +1 to attack and swipe again.

Rapier: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
Damage on hit: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

The map is up-to-date. Lalandar and Bose each face a goblin across the table on its side. That attack hits and drops the goblin trapped between the two tables.

Bose is up! One goblin remains and he’s in reach!

M Elf 4 Rogue

dagger thrust: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10

Bose thrusts as the goblin leaps back from lalandar's killing strike against his comrade, missing.

For his part, the goblin tries to duck under the table to his right, past the goblin felled by Lalandar, around the end of the table, and out the door. Because you both have attacked, your attacks of opportunity have reset and this attempt to flee provokes from both of you.

M Elf 4 Rogue

AOO: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15

The goblin successfully evades Bose' blade once more. He ducks through the table legs and attempts to circle around Lalandar on his way to the hall...

Male Elf Magus (Bladebound) [HP 38, Fort +6, Ref +4, Will +5, CMD 19/16, Init +3, AC 16, touch 13, flat-footed 13, Perc +8]

Not wanting to chase, Lalandar will try to stab the fleeing goblin in the back

Rapier: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16

Damage on hit: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8

The goblin bobs and weaves around Lalandar and screams in terror at the sight of the wolf Frenhir, which only seems to speed him up.

GM Screen:
Attack: 1d20 ⇒ 14

The wolf lunges at the creature, but his teeth fail to find purchase. Just as it looks like the creature will make it out the door, the oblivious Alfren steps into the doorway. Alfren is carrying a ranged weapon, so he does not threaten an area and so the goblin provokes no attack of opportunity from him. However, the goblin cannot pass through his square without effort.

The goblin attempts to dive through Alfren's legs and into the hallway.

GM Screen:
Acrobatics: 1d20 ⇒ 13

The essentially-flat-footed young man doesn't have time to react and the goblin squirts free and into the hall. He turns left and continues his flight, screaming "Intruders! Longshanks! Dozens of them! With huge dogs!"

Jaonos moves toward the Ferrum and the voices, asking, "Be at ease, we will get you out of here. Who did you say needs help?" As he does, he casts an orison of light so he can see better.

You hear the twang of a crossbow being fired, then Alfren leans out of the door and fires his, as well.

GM Screen:
Attacks: 2d20 ⇒ (1, 3) = 4

You also hear Conn curse and see Alfren shake his head. Jaonos calls back to Frenhir, "Attack!" and the wolf bounds out the door in pursuit.

Conn comes up to the door as he reloads. "We're going to be up to our ears in goblins in a minute, boss. What should we do?"

GM Screen:
Attack: 1d20 ⇒ 4

What do you do?

Male Elf Magus (Bladebound) [HP 38, Fort +6, Ref +4, Will +5, CMD 19/16, Init +3, AC 16, touch 13, flat-footed 13, Perc +8]

We have 2 choices. Try and fight our way to the stairs or set up a defense. This room has only one exit. If we do defense, it might be our best option.
Perception checking room Ferrum is in: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9

The room appears to be a natural cavity in the rock that the construction butted up against and then got incorporated into the design. The walls are rough and damp from condensation. Crudely-crafted steel rings have been hammered into the walls every five feet around the room from which chains and manacles hang. Nine individuals each wear a set of these manacles. Three men, a woman, and five goblins appear to be unwilling residents of this cramped space.

One of the men looks at you and back at Ferrum. ”A brute and a pixie, traveling together. What next? So, you get me outta here and I’m your man to fight outta this hole. I’m swearin’ it.”

Another man says, ”Please, yes, let us go.” The third man offers, ”I can fight, but she needs help.” He points at an unconscious woman that appears to have been dumped unceremoniously in the corner. ”They brought her in and dumped her there. She hasn’t awoken, but I can’t get close enough to see if she’s hurt badly.”

The first man says, ”Get us out first! What’s she going to do in a fight?”

Ferrum offers, ”We could retreat to the armory and get these men weapons. It only has one door.” There are other possibilities, of course. Don’t assume that’s best because it came from the NPC...

Male Elf Magus (Bladebound) [HP 38, Fort +6, Ref +4, Will +5, CMD 19/16, Init +3, AC 16, touch 13, flat-footed 13, Perc +8]

I cannot in good conscious leave prisoners. Who is the quickest of us?

which way did he run? The direction we came from or farther down the passage?

Ferrum agreed, ”No, we don’t leave anyone behind. But I’ve seen him,” he nods toward Bose, [b]”open locks with a toothpick and a wire. If anyone can get them out, it’s him.”

For literal speed, you can’t beat the wolf. Among the characters, it’s a tie. What do you have in mind?

M Elf 4 Rogue

Bose will start picking locks, non goblins first.

if the goblin ran away from us, we could send the wolf rushing back to get the weapons. Stand our Defense right here and then hope he gets back before too many show up. Either way I was thinking he went ahead to grab them and then we'd get them sooner.

Frenhir is very loyal, but he is just a wolf. He doesn't have hands to carry weapons and he is limited in his understanding of what you would want him to bring back.

M Elf 4 Rogue

I don't know what I am doing

The human manacles resist Bose' efforts to unlock them, but given time, they can likely be broken. The locks on the walls, however, are a simpler puzzle and the humans are all soon freed.

The goblins look at each other at Bose' question, eyes wide. As one, they all hold up their tiny hands, "You boss! Free us, tell us what to do!" "Yes yes! Fight for new boss!" "Protect new boss, new boss never worry again!" "What are we doing? OOF - Why elbow me?" (Someone apparently didn't read their script.)

Ferrum says to Lalandar, "I don't know about quickest, but I don't need torchlight that would give me away. What are you thinking?"

Learning of the idea of running back to the armory for weapons and returning, he nods. "Be ready to throw that door open when you hear me shout." He rushes out the door, only to reappear a moment later. "Start with this!" He drops two heavy wooden shields, two morningstars, and four javelins just inside the door and takes off again.

You hear increased sounds of agitation coming from the other direction down the hall.

Jaonos makes his way to the unconscious female and starts to gently check her for wounds to determine her condition.

Pixie Rogue wrote:

I spoke incorrectly here. Ferrum is actually faster than the rest of the party.

GM Screen:
Jaonos' checks: 1d20 ⇒ 21d20 ⇒ 17
Tigrise: 1d20 ⇒ 9

Jaonos checks for broken bones and open wounds. Leaning in close, he gently pulls an eyelid back to see her pupils. Sitting back on his heels, he says, "Miss, I can't say you are safe, but if you wish to live to reach somewhere safer, we could use your assistance. Allow me to help you stand."

Tigrise, you are welcome to describe what the others see at this point and introduce yourself as much or as little as you please.

The three male prisoners look very confused for a moment. One near the door scowls and moves into the other room while the one that had been concerned is clearly relieved. "By Iomedae's grace! You were all right all along? I'm glad you're OK! No hard feelings. My name's Kerkko." He extends a hand in a gesture of friendship.

The third fellow looks back and forth between the door and Kerkko, confused. After a moment, he gives the woman a small wave and offers, "Um, hello. I'm Unto and he's Jorma," before following the other man (Jorma) into the first room.

All three men show signs of abuse - various healing wounds and burns are evident on their arms and chests. They are clad in long pants and shirts that show signs of cuts and burns through the fabric. Jorma has a broad face and a nose that looks like it has been broken many times. Unto has a wicked scar that runs from his left cheekbone down onto his neck. It is much older than the other wounds described above. The third man, Kerkko, is broad-shouldered and carries himself with poise, even in his current garb, and his relief at the woman's health appears to be genuine. He often reaches to scratch a spot on his arms or atop his head.

Lalandar sees the former prisoner Jorma enter the room. When Conn, Alfren, and Jorma see each other, there's a wide range of emotions that cross all of their faces. Alfren goes from surprise to relief, saying, "Jorma! You're alive! Why are you here?" Conn seems to be just as surprised, but he not excited to see the other man, "We thought you'd finally found a guard you couldn't best. Guess it was a goblin what did you in." Jorma, for his part, looks angrily at Conn, then at Lalandar, "If you are relying on that bloody coward to do any of your fighting, I'll offer you a real man to do his work for him. I'll kill him now and save the goblins the trouble and you can pay me instead." He doesn't appear to be entirely joking, but Conn only gives him a thin smile.

When Unto enters the room, his gaze goes from one man to another before looking over at Lalandar. He says nothing, but steps back into the corner and waits.

OK, we're on the clock. Everyone roll for initiative, just to put actions in order. We are not in combat, but will proceed in rounds as you prepare for an invasion so I can see how much progress Ferrum has made compared to the goblins compared to the defenders (you). I know how many rounds you have before Ferrum returns and before the goblins arrive. And... go!

Bose, to the Goblins before setting them free. Why are you chained and why should I trust you to not turn sides?

Bose' question prompts a chorus of replies. One picked a fight with someone important. Another ate someone else's food, which started a fight. Another looked at one of the concubines (he's still confused why that's a problem, you can tell). One of the females doesn't know why she's here and the other is pouting and doesn't respond.

"Nononono! We not turn sides! We fight for New Boss! New Boss save us, we save New Boss!" The speaker nods so vigorously that you fear is over-sized head will snap off and roll past you. The others join in like a bobblehead chorus. Except for the pouter, who pouts.

Female Half-Elf Druid - 4

Groggily, What's going on and who are you? Last I knew we were being overrun by goblins and now I awake to you all. My tiger Kitty is probably looking for me so watch out.

Jaonos offers, ”I am Jaonos, a humble priest of Illuviatar. You were apparently brought into the goblins’ lair and chained. You remember nothing? You seem largely unhurt, which is good as my blessings for the day grow thin. And I fear the goblins know we are here and will be attacking shortly. Are you able to stand? To fight?”

Tigrise: The room you are in contains loops on the walls. Chains with manacles hang from some. You have a pair of manacles on your wrists, but they are no longer chained to the wall. Five goblins are still chained to the wall on the other side. The room would be pitch black if not for a light shining from the cleric’s holy symbol, hanging from his neck on a cord. He is an elf.

Another elf is talking to one of the goblins a few feet away. I will leave it to Bose’ player to describe his character.

A young human man, probably in his mid-to late-twenties, stands behind the cleric, watching you with a worried expression, but he seems relieved to hear you speak. ”Thank the Inheritor! I was afraid they had hurt you badly before they brought you in. At least they didn’t torture you,” he shows burns on his arms, ”I think they only did it for their sick entertainment. My friends are all gone now and I didn’t want to see them kill someone else.”

He turns to Bose, holding out his manacled hands, ”Sir, if you can free me and put a sword and shield in my hands, I will gladly serve you for a year and a day, if your cause is just.”

Bose, you know the manacles are locked with a good quality lock. It might be faster to break the manacles’ chain. He’s a strapping lad, he might be good in a fight.

What check is needed to break the manacles?

They can be attacked with a weapon, broken by brute force, or you might have other ideas. Give me a check for your best skill about how things work or physical sciences. A disable device would work if that’s your best bonus.

M Elf 4 Rogue

Is anyone available to help? Bose does not have a strong strength modifier.

Female Half-Elf Druid - 4

Tigris, watching Bose try to figure how to free their new allies from their manacles, walks calmly to him and lays her manacles hands on his shoulders murmuring something that Bose cannot understand, cast Bull Strength.

There friend, you should feel strong enough to free us now.

M Elf 4 Rogue

Bose feels a strength coursing through him that is unlike anything he has ever felt.

He goes to work immediately on Tigri's manacles, using the delivered weapons if need be. Proceeding to the other humans.

Looking at the new "recruits," is this going to be a problem? We don't have time for this. I don't have sense motive, can the blade run it for the men?

Looking towards the hall, Lalandar has a plan. Grab the tables, at the very least, let's make it harder for them to get in. Put them on the sides, it will narrow the entrance. Hopefully keep them from overwhelming us quickly.

I'm also going to prep a spell. Ready to use it whenever the goblins begin to mount their attack. Chill Touch to increase my damage when they walk in.

Sorry, Bose, I've confused you. The knowledge/disable check was to see if you came up with another idea. One check was sufficient. The "attacks" against the manacles don't need attack rolls, presuming that the wearer doesn't resist your attack, just damage rolls. The number of rounds that the process takes is really the concern. You're not going to have enough time if Bose tries to open all of the manacles with one attack per round - you either need help or to prioritize so the most important ones are done first.

I understand now, Lalandar. Sense motive can be used untrained. Just use your Wisdom modifier. The blade can potentially aid (DC 10 Wisdom check) since it has a Wisdom score.

I don't know what she will do in a fight, but I'm going to be more effective if I can wield a shield and swing a sword - I can't do that if my arms are chained together.
