Season of Ghosts

A magical war between the archmages Geb and Nex left the landscape between their nations scarred and wracked by magical anomalies—a barren stretch known as the Mana Wastes. During the conflict, their generals also created countless weapons and defenses that pushed the limits of magic, yet most of these were destroyed in battle or lost forever. Recent investigations suggest that some of this ancient power is at play in an insular town outside Alkenstar, but there the trail runs cold. Can the PCs uncover the truth while braving the residents' eccentricities?

A Pathfinder Society Scenario designed for levels 1-5.
__________

Please dot-and-delete to check in to Gameplay! We will begin on August 13th.

Season of Ghosts

After receiving a short summons requesting unique agents with equally unique skill sets each of you find yourselves in the city of Katapesh, in the country of the same name. Known as the City of Trade, Katapesh is a city of organized chaos where you’ve heard that cash is king and commerce, the highest god. All of you have gathered at the Winding Road Inn, a coaching inn and chapter house that sits near the outskirts of the great city to meet with Venture-Captain Roderus for details about the job you’ve been called to do. Unfortunately, the good venture-captain is running a bit behind and so you’ve found yourselves ushered - by a rather incredulous-looking maid - into a small but pleasant sun room with an agreeable view of the nearby marketplace and plaza to await his arrival. A small tray of refreshments are already laid out on a nearby table in anticipation of your arrival; tea and small sandwiches from the looks of it.

As you study your fellow agents and introduce yourselves, you quickly come to the conclusion that this mission - quite possibly the first for many of you - will indeed be a truly unique experience…

Plumeria takes her seat with a hop to fit into the big people's seat. She studies the food choices quite carefully. Once she makes her choice, and a sip of tea she looks up to the other's in the room.

"Good Afternoon. I'm Plumeria Thorn. I see they have chosen very special Pathfinders for this mission. It must be special."

She's dressed in leather armor with a green tinge which matches her slight green tinge. Her hair is a bright red. She leaned a trident against the wall when she entered the room and took her seat.

A rather rueful looking young plant man, draped in a Pathfinders not-so-greatcoat - in fact the coat itself looks to have been torn quite a bit - gaping holes right where the heart would be on a halfling owner approached.

He wears a badly dented wayfinder around his neck and bears the mark of a large predatory bird - an Osprey perhaps - on his chest. In his hand he carries a book - the Big Book of Names which has a picture of the Wall of Names on it. Were it not for the holly berries hanging from his vines the leaf man would have the bearing of a funeral director - pleasant but with the understanding that his work brings joy to few.

Greetings. My name is Vintner - I am a Name Keeper of the Society, created by a certain...infamous member of our Society's leadership to investigate the fates of....ill-fated expeditions and to bring rest to the souls of those so entangled by completing their work if possible. Between Aram Zey and Venture Captain Bakten I have certainly had my hands full recently...and I am told we may have lost another? And in the Mana Wastes no less. I shall be channeling the soul of an old pathfinder friend of mine - a Priest to Selket by the name of Raizel. He was murdered in blood port but his skill with healing should serve us nicely.

He opens the book to his name and seemingly drinks in the page - the sigil of a scorpion whip appearing over him for a moment.

Vintners scoffs, aware this display may have been offputting.

He grabs a sandwich and crunches down on it. ooh Egg Salad

Yet another vine leshy rushes into the briefing. Its body appears little more than a mass of twisted vines and leaves, interspersed with small pods of what look to be seeds. His small, beedy eyes peek out from a thick cluster of leaves and his small mouth spreads in a mischievous smile. "Well, g'day there, the name's Seedy...yeah, I know but the bloke who made me didn't have the greatest imagination!" He looks around the room, seeing nothing but leshies like himself. "I can't be-leaf my eyes! What a treet! Do you think they plant to have so many of us on the same mission?"

As he talks, he absent-mindedly plucks one of the seed pods off of his body and flicks it across the room where it strikes the wall with a thud. "Oops! Sorry 'bout that. Nervous habit!"

Season of Ghosts

The door to the sun room suddenly opens and in strides a tall, weathered-looking Garundi man dressed in a manner that seems more at home with being on safari than working within an inn. ”Ah, here you are! Sama said that I had some ‘unique’ guests waiting for me in the sun room and I suspected that you were who she meant. I’m Roderus and it’s a pleasure to meet you - but we’ll talk further in my office. Please, follow me.”

Roderus beckons you along and he leads you from the sun room and down a hallway to what appears to be a rather nondescript store room. Concealed within however is a secret door that leads into what is revealed to be a series of secret basements - where the true Winding Road Lodge actually lies. You are led into a room whose walls are nearly completely covered with maps and which boasts precarious stacks of journals and papers that nearly reach the ceiling. Roderus has a seat a large desk situated in the middle of the chaos and grins.

”Here we go, now we’ve got a little more privacy! I hope your journey here was not too arduous. I have a fascinating assignment for you.” He plucks a single sheet of paper from the middle of the pile on his desk. ”This is a letter from the Osiriani investigator Amenira, who works with the Temple of the All-Seeing Eye. Mercy, the town she mentions in her reports, wasn’t even on our map until now. It’s a small settlement out in the Mana Wastes. Magic is unpredictable out in the Wastes, and it sometimes coalesces into deadly storms. People in Alkenstar reported seeing one of these magical disturbances heading in the direction of Mercy, but the town weathered the fearsome storm without so much as a scratch.” Roderus slides the piece of paper across the desk before leaning back in his chair and linking his hands behind his head. ”Mighty strange, don’t you think?”

Kn. Religion (DC 15):

You know that the Temple of the All-Seeing Eye is the most prominent temple of Nethys, god of magic.

Season of Ghosts

Roderus peers over his desk at the rather confused-sounding plant-person. "You alright...son? Ma'am? Uh, no offense, but you're the first bunch of plant-folk I've dealt with. Might have to remind me if I get your name or uh...self...wrong. Don't mean anything by it though, I can promise you that."

That said, Roderus turns his attention to the rather stiff and no-nonsense Plumeria. "Those are all good questions but let me get to them one at a time." The venture-captain coughs. "One of my contacts at the temple got this missive from Amenira four months ago, and he hasn’t heard anything from her since. I’m sending you to Mercy to figure out why. If she’s still there, ask her why she hasn’t contacted anyone in months and help her finish her investigation; if she isn’t, find out what happened to her. While you're there, see how much of the mystery of Mercy you can unravel. Several of the clergy within the temple are intensely curious about why these mana storms haven't leveled the town, and so am I and I'm guessing that's why Amenira went out there in the first place."

"I'm afraid I don't know anything else about this feud, ointment, or sickness that she wrote about," Roderus continues, sighing with frustration. "Believe me, I wish I did. And I don't know much about Mercy itself, beyond it being located a good twenty miles or so south of Alkenstar."

"But I can tell you that I’ve booked a ship to the city of Alkenstar and you might be able to learn more about Mercy there," the venture-captain adds as he pushes a stack of boarding passes across his desk. "The ship departs in three hours, so if you have any questions, ask them now. Oh and don’t worry about supplies; you might want to wait until Alkenstar to pick up anything you might need.”

I know the forums were down for awhile today but moving us along since there don't seem to be any further questions.

Roderus shrugs helplessly. "It was just a suggestion. You're the first bunch of plantfolk agents I've seen, remember? And as far as plants go...well, the Mana Wastes are a basically a desert so there really aren't that many plants to be seen. Mainly just tough scrub brush and cacti. The folks in Alkenstar might know more about specific species, though."

"Anyway, since it doesn't look like you've got any other questions I suppose this is where we part ways for now." Roderus stands and walks around his desk to shake each of your hands...er, vines...er...appendages?

____________

Your task set, the group makes their way along to the docks and boards the ship set to sail for Alkenstar. The ship travels down the coast of the Obari Ocean, tacks northwest up the Elemion River, then sails south down the Ustradi River, finally stopping at the city of Alkenstar. Alkenstar is a city bisected by Ustradi River, with the poorer half, Smokeside, located within a permanent pocket of antimagic where arcane and even divine spells simply don’t function. The other half, Skyside, is where the wealthy live and is the only part of the city to boast towers high enough to rise above the perpetual layer of smog that covers the rest of the city and offer a clear view of the open sky.

Your boat docks slightly short of a five-hundred-foot-tall waterfall in the middle of the city, where southbound ships painstakingly ride a winding elevator to the river above. Nearby, carriages wait to lead passengers into the smog-covered city. Whether it’s information about Mercy or supplies that you seek, or both, Alkenstar is surely the place to find them.
____________

Feel free to ask around the city for information about Mercy and/or make any last-minute purchases you might need.

Diplomacy (Gather Information) *or* Kn. Local (DC 15+):

Mercy is located a little over 20 miles south of Alkenstar. The people there worship an obscure nature deity. Rumors speak of a vampire who occasionally hunts travelers along the road.

Diplomacy (Gather Information) *or* Kn. Local (DC 20+):

The people of Mercy have a reputation for being insular and extremely devout to their god Robori. The town has rigid, inflexible rules, but the quality of its harvests encourages traders to occasionally stop by the town to purchase produce.

Diplomacy (Gather Information) *or* Kn. Local (DC 25+):

For the past year, an Osiriani woman from Mercy named Amenira came to Alkenstar every month. She traded for supplies and sent large collections of letters before returning to Mercy.

Season of Ghosts

As enjoyable as the boat trip to Alkenstar might have been, the group finds the city itself to be...less so. Full of tall towers, mechanized creations, thick smog, and lots of people who don't have the time or inclination to answer the questions of a bunch of strange plantfolk. But a tangle of leshies is nothing if not persistent - much like a kudzu vine - and the group sets out to try and learn more about Mercy before departing the city.

Poor Seedy is so shy that he's barely able to even speak to a stranger, much less ask pointed questions about weird little towns out in the boonies. Vintner can hardly be heard, covered head to toe as he is in an attempt to block out the worst of the smog. Skarlit and Plumeria do a little better but their vocal disdain for the smoggy skies earns them more than a few dirty looks from passersby - hometown pride runs deep here, apparently. And Sticky earns more than a few shrieks of, "Get lost, freak!" when he tries approaching people about directions to the totally cool beach so he can put his totally cool snorkel to use, as well as a shiner from a very irate lady dwarf.

"Hmph! There's no 'dude' alive that could work this dress like it deserves," said lady dwarf grumbles aloud as she turns and struts away down the street. "The nerve of some people!"

Season of Ghosts

Eager to be shut of stinky and smoggy Alkenstar, you all quickly gather your things, shoulder your packs, and make your way out of the city, following the southern road that winds away into the wastes. For a time you travel along the dirt road, with only the now-blessedly-open sky above and each other for company. Open desert and rocky terrain stretch as far as the eye can see, dotted here and there with tough, gnarly scrub brush. An occasional tumbleweed blows past, but it otherwise seems quite desolate and empty. Eventually, the dirt road begins to wind through rocky, tree-lined hills. Sporadic clearings occur where large sections of trees have been destroyed or damaged. Some are only missing a few branches, while others have been split almost in half vertically or chopped down to a short stump. The exposed wood is black and perfectly smooth. One such clearing reveals the opening of a narrow cave in the hillside. The trail splits, leading both into the cave and off to the north.

Kn. Nature (DC 15):

As you draw closer and have a better look at the damaged trees, you realize that the wood isn’t black at all - it’s actually burnt sap.

Perception (DC 15):

That’s strange...with as many of these trees that have been destroyed, shouldn’t there be a lot more debris lying around?

From over a ridge off to the left comes a humming that is soon followed by the form of yet another vine leshy hiking up the trail. The small form catches sight of the group and with a hoot and a wave bounds up to the group. As the leshy rushes up, the details of his form come into view. What can be seen of the short form's body is draped in what looks like a feathery moss or lichen, that partially hides the twisted branches and vines that actually support and move the little one around. The moss is the heaviest right around his face, where it becomes almost a solid mass, with small openings for a mouth and two eyes. On his front he has a relatively large sign that says 'Plants are people, too!' and a closer look shows that under the sign and a good deal of moss is a slightly mildewed, but serviceable set of lamellar armor as well as a scimitar and club.

Happily bounding up to everyone the leshy, calls out, "You wouldn't happen to be Pathfinders? On an assignment from an Adventure-Captain Ro-der-us? I'm supposed to be meeting a group of fine folks such as you for my first assignment and heard back in Alkenstar that they might have come this way! After a second to stop and breath, he gives a small intake of breath. “Shoot, I never did give my name. I’m Uproot Nacau Fen! You can call me Uproot, Fen, or whatever you want as long as you tell me that it means me! Oh, and this big lump behind me is Prickles! Found him wandering around aimlessly on the trip up here. Following not too far behind the small form of Uproot is a large, and what can only be described as ‘burly’, cactus. The thing sands on five large root-like stalks, with two ‘arms’ that jut out at right angles for about a foot or so and then turn sharply skyward. On what would be the bicep of the cactus’s right ‘arm’ is a red mark that with all the thorns in the way looks like red lips. For some reason or other, there’s a sign hanging from a larger spike on his front that says ‘I ♥ Hugs!’.

Despite what Uprot has claimed, the large cactus doesn’t seem anything but through and through aggressive as it moves into place behind the leshy. You could swear if the thing had eyes it’d be glaring at you all as it moves it’s head side to side, taking the group in while it ‘flexes’ it’s arms. A few moments later, it stops moving, but still radiates pure distrust, almost challenging you to make a move at Uproot and give him a reason to punch you.

Puzzled by the strangeness of the burnt sap and rather debris-free terrain near the cave, the group quickly comes to an agreement that the cave up ahead bears further investigation. The proceedings are briefly halted as yet another of your leshy brethren comes huffing and puffing up to you, the world's surliest-looking cactus in tow behind them. Clearly they've gotten lost on the way to Alkenstar's elusive beaches as well.

After perhaps taking a few moments for everyone to introduce themselves - or not - some of the group begin advancing up the hill towards the cave. However, several of you catch a flash of movement from just behind a rock as a low, snarling can be heard. A hyena-headed creature with patchy, matted fur reveals itself, as does a smaller, canine-like beast that slinks out of the shadows. The hyena-headed creature raises a longbow and takes aim at Plumeria, acidic green drool pouring from its ravenous maw. Most surprising and disturbing of all, however, is the realization that one of the creature's legs appears to be twisted and deformed, resembling a great overgrown vine!

Sure, move yourselves up a bit further on the map to reflect poking around.

Season of Ghosts

In spite of the appearance of the strange-looking creature and its companion beast, Sticky and Uproot strike up a bit of conversation as everyone begins scrambling to prepare themselves for a tussle. Uproot confirms that the larger creature is some sort of mutant gnoll, quite obviously slowed down by its strange and deformed leg. While he's never heard of gnolls as having any particular talents or abilities beyond simply hacking and slashing their prey to death, Uproot is also fairly certain that coming into direct contact with the gnoll wouldn't be a good idea - those things carry all sorts of diseases under the best circumstances, so who knows what a life in the Mana Wastes has done to its normal flora?

Deformed Leg - Reduce based speed by 10 ft., +4 to CMD & Disease (Mana Fever).

Meanwhile, Sticky helpfully - or not - offers that the canine creature is a scavenger and prefers meat...but probably isn't above sampling tasty plant matter when push comes to shove!
