Then We switch once we stablise heinrich? we just need to draw it to shayla and both of us with reach pound a it....that is if shayla is up to it.

Elemental AoO: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (16) + 11 = 27
Damage: 1d6 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Elemental Power Attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28
Damage: 1d6 + 11 ⇒ (3) + 11 = 14
The Elemental delivers a rain of blows at the spider creature, as Archibald reaches deep into his wizard's hat and pulls out a small pouch, hurling it at the creature. Would Clandelve still threaten for a flank while charmed?
Tanglefoot Bag (touch): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 2

Also my enlarge spell's one round casting time should be finished. I'm not certain if you target those spells at the beginning or end of casting, but if not I could redirect it to another humanoid party member for a nice little boost to damage and reach (right now I think it would force squeezing AC penalties on Clandelve on top of his other troubles.)

![]() |

You make all pertinent decisions about a spell (range, target, area, effect, version, and so forth) when the spell comes into effect.
Cogstadt takes a step back, tucks his hammer back into his belt and reloads his crossbow (NB: The intention was to hold his xbow in his offhand while using his hammer, not drop it, in case there's any confusion).

As the creature pulls out a wand Clandelve takes a swing at it..but fails to hit it
The elemental does the same @Archibald I don't think you took the -4 penalty for hitting a creature not touching the ground into account? I'm a bit lost on your attack modifier at the moment. It's a small augmented (+4 strength?) earth elemental right? So it should have a +6+2 = +8 to hit?No flanking ..and a -4 cause the target is not touching the ground and no earth master and hits the creature (or misses if I counted the bonus to hit correctly) but it's just pushed to the side a bit and it's rubbery hide absorbs some of the blow of the elemental (it's got DR 5, at least against the elemental's fists and with the -4 to damage from not touching the ground..no damage..so doesn't really matter if it didn't hit[/ooc]
The creature then points a wand at Clandelve
Clandelve then moves over next to Heinrich - unopposed by the creature - and pulls out a potion and plans to pour it into Heinich's mouth (takes a full round action to administer a potion to someone else, so will take up his next round)
Shalya moves back and ends her movement behind Archibald's elemental
Archibalds elemental power attacks the bug, hitting it Although I think it only does 1d6+4(+2 from augmented strength, +2 from power attack damage)? -4 from hitting not ground touching target ..which would be 7 - 5 DR
Archibald finishes casting his enlarge spell and then tries to throw an tanglefoot bag past some allies into melee at the bug and doesn't manage to hit (doesn't hit touch AC)
What Cogstadt said..you determine what to target at the start of your turn in which you finish casting. Which might make it hard to see Clandelve at the moment..I'll admit I'm pretty bad at line of sight..but from one of your corners you might be able to see one of Clandelve's corners..so if you want to you can enlarge Clandelve, or someone else
Cogstadt takes a step back, tucks his hammer back into his belt and reloads his crossbow

Kalaron (+Heinrich suffering from Black Goat nightmares) (+Archibalds enlarge target)
Sorry..took a while to catch up..but I think this is the current status

Okay, I'm up for it. What do you think is the best position for me to wait?
I'll mention I have an emergency option, which is using the Moment of Glory boon. If you feel like I should really use it, let me know.
of power at just the right moment to perform a truly extraordinary feat. By activating this boon as a free
action, you become a mythic character (1st mythic tier) for 3 rounds. If you fall unconscious due to hit
point loss during this time, you automatically stabilize without needing to attempt a Constitution check.
In addition, once before this effect ends, you may use the surge mythic ability to increase any d20 roll you
just made by rolling 1d6 and adding it to the result. Using the surge is an immediate action taken after
the result of the original roll is revealed. This can change the outcome of the roll.
When you use this boon, cross it off your Chronicle sheet; however, anytime you successfully complete
(earning the maximum possible number of Prestige Points) a scenario that using the “hard mode”
option, you may have the GM sign this boon. You may use this boon one additional time for each such
signature you receive.
I also just re-discovered one of my chronicle sheets allows me to cast one of the following spells once: aid, detect thoughts, lesser restoration, or see invisibility.
I'm thinking about casting either aid or lesser restoration, if I happen to get a chance before the Visitant's going to attack me.

Kalaron will try to hit the bug from where he is, not counting the penalties. Alternatively, if the bug isn't wounded, I'll channel.
Attack 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 121d12 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13 or channel 1d6 ⇒ 2
Kalaron steps up after a brief puff on his pipe and lines his heavy weapon towards his target, his shoulders and arms getting used to its weight now.

As for the damage, it should be 1d6 + 3 from it's base 16str (you dont seem to have included this?) + another 2 from augment, *1.5 for being a single natural slam attack and dealing damage as a two handed attack, and +6 from a two handed equivelant power attack with +4 BAB. that should total a 20str for +7 from strength, and a +6 from power attack for... +13, -4 for +9... So I suppose neither of us were correct.
tl;dr you're correct about the attack bonus/earth mastery penalties but not about the damage math and I think my terrible head for numbers is certainly showing
"Drat! A charm spell! And my elemental can't accost this airborne aphid from the ground... Harrumph! Well, elf girl. I suppose it's time to see what you can do!"I'll enlarge Shayla to boost those damage dice of hers. From what I can see her two-weapon full attack would now be 1d20+7-2 to hit on both sabres with 2d6+4 for the mainhand and 2d6+2 for the offhand. Should help you punch through that DR!

Clandelve, still standing over Heinrich, pours the bluish potion down the unconscious dwarf's mouth and helps him drink it.
"This should 'elp ye feel better, lad," he says.
clw: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
I'm going ahead with the potion instead of healing checks for two reasons 1) I think Heinrich is far enough below 0 that this won't even get him up and 2) I'm not sure my heal is good enough to work!
"Hey, can't we all stop fightin' an' be friends?!" Clandelve yells out. "Aye 'ate ta see fightin' among me mates!"
Do I get any additional saves against this charm where he's attacking my buddies?

"Holy $#%&!" Shayla exclaims as she grows in size.
Shayla gives Archibald an engrossed look when she realizes the bottom of her skirt, which reaches till just above her knees, is now quite high above the ground. "You gross, perverted, sick human!"
Considering Shayla's background with human men, Archibald just scored some negative points :P Ooc I'm a bit worried about the lower AC, but we'll see what happens.
@GM: I changed Shayla's stat bar below her name to reflect the changes to AC, etc.

@Archibald, k so the first attack missed and the second attack did more damage..I'll adjust it's hps. I just took the bestiary's version and added some stuff to that ..didn't think of power attacking doing more damage, I thought it's a single fist..so +2 damage. Also ..how long is the elemental going to be around? I think at 1 round/lvl = rounds? it does *Pop* at the end of this round?
Archibalds spell enlarges Shahyla
Kalaron moves forward and swings his axe at the bug but fails to hit it
It's hurt..so that means you didn't channel
Clandelve hears a "helpful" suggestion for him to move further back into the room and take Heinrich with him to be out of danger..it's much safer there
Clandelve then pours some healing fluids into Heinrich (Not entirely sure on Heinrichs current hp..but this might bring him to 0 or above)
The bug 5ft steps into the doorway and starts to attack the BIG target in front of him
Fullround attack vs Shayla (I don't think this breaks the enchantment on Clandelve since the attacks are not vs him and it doesn't mention that attacking allies breaks the charm)
Claw 1 vs Shayla's AC (of 18 at the moment): 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (10) + 14 = 24
Claw 2 vs Shayla's AC (of 18 at the moment) : 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (20) + 14 = 34
Claw 3 vs Shayla's AC (of 18 at the moment): 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (19) + 14 = 33
Claw 4 vs Shayla's AC (of 18 at the moment) : 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (16) + 14 = 30
To confirm vs Shayla's AC (of 18 at the moment) : 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (13) + 14 = 27
Damage claw 1 vs Shayla: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Damage claw 2 vs Shayla: 2d4 + 8 ⇒ (1, 2) + 8 = 11
Damage claw 3 vs Shayla: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Damage claw 4 vs Shayla: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Grab attempt vs Shayla's CMD: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (20) + 15 = 35
Damage from the grab: 2d6 ⇒ (5, 1) = 6 and a DC 18 fort save or loose 1d4 ⇒ 1 strength
I think this drops Shalya to below 0

3/6 of us down guys...and I don't think I have any way to break this enchantment on me. This is looking pretty grim. Cogs and Kalaron, you should use the bonus +2 to AC I mentioned in the discussion thread. Might help a bit.

Fort: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17 -1 Str
Before she's able to do anything useful, Shayla goes down.

With things looking as bad as they are, I thought I'd point out something in the Charm Person line of spells: "Any act by you or your apparent allies that threatens the charmed person breaks the spell." Does wiping out all my friends not count as something that threatens me? It also says it needs to speak my language (though I'm guessing it does speak common). I think we would still be good to this point, even if the spell breaks, but the first hostile action it took since it cast the spell was to hurt Shayla.

Elemental Power Attack: 1d20 + 8 - 4 ⇒ (17) + 8 - 4 = 21
Damage: 1d6 + 13 - 4 ⇒ (1) + 13 - 4 = 10
Archibald will launch a glitterdust spell (DC 18), targeting the creature and nobody else, and digging his gnarled fingers into Shayla's hair, trying to drag her away from the creature as a move action, tears in his eyes as his feeble frame is pushed to it's very limit. "Clandelve! Snap out of it, man! You need to get him out of there!"
A character can generally push or drag along the ground as much as five times his maximum load. Favorable conditions can double these numbers, and bad circumstances can reduce them by half or more. Assuming the average weight of a female elf being roughly 101 pounds, multiplied by a factor of eight by the enlarge spell that takes a standard action to dismiss, Archibald can just move her away with his 14 strength, albiet only five feet, assuming she has a light load. If the creature fails to save against this spell it's our best chance of making our escape. If only my elemental could grapple it! Stupid earth mastery...

![]() |

Shayla normally weighs 100 pounds, with an encumbrance of 98.65 lbs. If you could separate her from her backpack, perhaps by cutting the chords, the load would be reduced by 41 lbs. It's also debatable if she'd hold onto her swords, both weighting 2 lbs when normal sized, if you'd start dragging her.

![]() |

I was hoping to get a ruling on my last question about whether killing all my companions counts as a threat to me and therefore breaks the spell. Regardless, we're in pretty serious trouble and may want to think about escape plans. It drops any of us in one round with those 4x +14 attacks, and our good DM has implied he could go even harder on us if he wanted to.
If Clandelve is still charmed, he is going to try to drag Heinrich out of the room. If the bug is in the way, he will try to move past it with Heinrich (since we're friendly, no AoO?).
If the spell is broken, he'll attack.
MW Dwarven Waraxe attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21 for MW Dwarven Waraxe damage: 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5 and Spiked Light Shield attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23 for Spiked Light Shield Damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Anyway, hopefully one of those options is less stupid than the other...If I do end up in combat with it, I'm going to use my Boon to give me +2 vs. one enemy and use it on this guy.

![]() |

I _think_ it wouldn't break the spell. But I haven't been able to find any wording on what constitutes a treat. So if Clandelve thinks that one friend fighting another friend of his is a treat to him he could snap out of it. I kinda hate charm spells since depending on how someone thinks it works or what it should do it's either too powerful or does almost nothing..so I'm fine with just forgetting about it and going for a straight forward fight (I only tried it to give Heinrich a chance at stablizing and not make a full attack against Clandelve that round)
@Shalya; you drop held items as soon as you go unconscious..so unless you have weapon cords or a locked gauntlet..your swords are on the ground
The elemental tries to hit the insect but forewarned by the air currents in front of the elemental's massive fists it evades getting hit. (does't hit AC)
Archibald casts glitterdust on the creature covering it with sparkling dust
Will save: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27
but other then making it sparkle it doesn't seem to be effected by it too much.
Since Archibald mentioned making your escape, if you guys seriously consider running away; I'm going to throw out this option since I kind of feel this creature is overpowered and since it doesn't have any tactics listed to hunt you down, I feel I have some leeway on how this plays out as a GM.
Clandelve stays charmed, Heinrich and Shalya stay unconscious (and get stabilized by the visitant before bleeding out) and the rest try to escape while the elemental buys you guys a round..and manage to get away because the creature let's you (who knows how his alien mind works, maybe it's contend with having only 3 new thralls instead of 6) . As far as I understand PFS..since the 3 that got left behind didn't die it doesn't take a raise dead but will cost 5 prestige for a body recovery while the society sends a retrieval team to take care of/sneak past the visitant and retrieve them including all of their possessions...or Clandelve snaps out of it and you keep fighting.

![]() |

I say we all try to escape, if indeed possible. I'm lucky to have exactly 5 PP. I hope the others that'd need it also have it.
Not beating the final encounter will lower our rewards, but we should still get most of it. Though there's something I do worry about... Are the bosses of the other Thornkeep levels also this overpowered?

![]() |

@Shayla: Actually, because of the weird way that modules and APs are handled in PFS, it really isn't that bad - as per the Guide to Organised Play, if you participate in more than 2/3 of the module, you receive full rewards :-)
You *do* still have to clear any 'conditions gained', of course, so we still need to pay for 'body recovery', but other than that, we should be fine.

![]() |

I didn't expect that, at least not with PP. Seeing how PP is linked to a primary and secondary objective in scenarios.
It leaves a bit of a sour taste, but at least we can continue our adventures with these characters if we can all escape :)

![]() |

Yes, but remember, for a module, you receive 3 XP and 4 PP; so it is the equivalent of 'failing' two secondary success conditions, anyway. Penalizing you even further would be downright mean.

![]() |

I've always wondered why they didn't properly scale the PP and XP. They could've added several smaller conditions, each earning 1 or 2 PP, for getting a total amount of 6 PP in a module.

![]() |

The reason for that is that you *aren't* expected to gain full prestige when you play normal scenarios (since it is assumed that you will occasionally fail to succeed at something). The expectation is that you will earn 4.5 prestige per level, so in the case of modules, which grant a level, that is why you receive 4 prestige (since it is rounded down).

![]() |

I'm definitely in the "Run and Live" camp, rather than the "Stay and be Killed One by One" camp. This boss is super overpowered for this level, methinks, and I've been reading about Thornkeep being a TPK fiesta. I have enough PP to lose...let's choose Life. And thanks, DM Revvy, for giving us a merciful option. We still have a price to pay, but it sucks to die on a boss that gives so little chance to win.
On another note, it's been really sad to see Clandelve fail so many will saves. I've done all I can to improve his saves (+2 base, +5 additional from feats/traits vs. spells, spell-likes) and I end up drooling like a moron any chance I get. It's so sad. Perhaps I'll have a chance to redeem myself later.

![]() |

I'm shocked at the monster......4 claw attacks!!!
Attack but not sure if I can scratch the guy 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 231d12 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
or
Channel? 1d6 ⇒ 3
or
Grab people and run?
I'm in favor of the run and live option but if it's not possible, then the above attack has to suffice. The least I can do is at least channel to try and stablise the rest.
Given that my AC isn't going to help after I saw the attack bonus....
Kalaron swings between various options and begins to move back, his mind rushing through various ways to save his allies. Considering whether to to channel or swing.

![]() |

Archibald will, straining, throw his back out as he tries to pull the elfling away without dismissing his spell. Hobbling away, he begins to hobble up the stairs. "Chums, I believe it is time to excercise what we scholars call the better part of valor!"

![]() |

"I have to agree."

![]() |

Carefully Archibald, Cogstadt and Kalaron start to retreat..when they get some distance between themselves and the the Visitant the look to see it dragging Shayla's body into the room it came out of while shredding some of her clothing to use as bandages.
They then start to make a run for it..hoping to get word back to the Pathfinder Society to send a rescue team to retrieve what ever is left from their comrades.
Meanwhile Clandelve takes care of Heinrich and Shayla, making sure they are stable before the Visitant eventually turns on him and puts him unconscious as well..then over time the Visitant preforms brain surgery on all 3 of them..leaving them drained of wisdom and turning them into something similar to the tieflings you fought in the main room.
Luckily a team of experienced pathfinder agents guided by the escaped party members show up before their brains are permanently destroyed and those agents manage to beat the Visitant with incredible luck and it flees away without being able to carry any of their possessions with it.
Over time and with some loving care (and magical healing) Shayla, Clandelve and Heinrich are able to recover fully
