Red pokes his head in again, looking for some advice.
Hey Hmm (and anyone else here who GMs), what's your take on AoOs and players that don't realize they're going to provoke?
If a player posts and their actions provoke an AoO, but they simply haven't realized it, would you first say, "Hey pal, you're going to get chomped if you do that. Are you sure?" or do you just resolve their actions without first asking if they realized it?
| GM Hmm |
It depends on how new and fragile they are.
If they're really new or fragile, point out that it provokes. If they're experienced, resolve it. If you're not sure, ask, and have a GM Screen spoiler in your post with the results of that AoO in case it happens.
With my group of Venture Officers in Kortos, they often deliberately provoke just to get into position, thinking that the monsters can't hit them. They're usually right, but occasionally it's fun when one of the monsters proves them wrong!

That's reasonable. Thanks for your input.
It happens every now and then that I forget I'm provoking while playing, or a player in the game I'm running doesn't realize they are, so I wanted to get a sense of what other GMs might do. Typically, I'd warn them, since I feel it's harder to notice you might be provoking with PbPs and there's no side dialogue with other players who can say "Don't do that, you might get clawed!" :)

It's fun consulting with you! You're really excellent as a PbP GM.

By the way, even though Aki is likely to try and talk certain foes down it's more because she finds violence distasteful than out of a desire to play redeemer in most cases. So if Laszo doesn't want to play nice or if Az and the others want to punch him in the face anyway, she's not going to argue the point too much!

Hey folks. Just a heads up that I'll be out of town through next Tuesday. I may be able to make short posts from my phone, but that'd probably be the extent of it. Feel free to bot me as needed to keep things moving.
Aki, it's funny you mention that. I'm just finishing up another PBP of this scenario where I'm playing a LG cleric who, like Aki, finds violence distasteful to say the least. Created some fun interactions among the characters involved. All that to say, thanks for the good RP, and good luck convincing Az to stand down...ever! Haha
| GM Hmm |
When do you leave, Az? I'll try to finish up with this sequence.
Azhagoth Fellcleaver

I leave late tonight, but will probably be unable to post after 3:30 MT time, as I'll be busy taking care of final preparations before I head out. I'll go ahead and pre-post my next turn with some contingent actions just to help keep things moving before you have to bot me too much.
EDIT - Actually, there's way too many contingencies I can see here. I'll leave it to the bot. Haha
| GM Hmm |
What weapon do you use? What is your attack bonus? You're up now, Borox, go attack!
Hmm
| GM Hmm |
Okay, so here's the part of the adventure where I need all of you to participate and come up with ideas. You're going to be in a warehouse, setting up to defend it and maybe even come up with surprises for the invaders. I can just throw the groups at you, but the preparations that you make are half the fun of this last bit.
I know that Az is gone until Thursday. Should I put us on hiatus until then? Or do you guys want to dig in now, ask questions and start coming up with some warehouse defense ideas?
Hmm

Oh, and I just realized that Baerlie never collected job rolls from you when she recruited you. If any of you have a profession, craft or perform skill, please roll your job rolls here. You also may elect to take ten instead of rolling.

Day Job (Perform: Wind Instruments): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
Ahhh, a beautiful melody :)
| GM Hmm |
It's a Wednesday, which is my rotten day. Also, I'm closing up Kortos Envoy. So, if you don't hear from me until tonight, don't panic.

I'm back from the wilds of Central Florida. Thanks for your patience while I was gone, folks. Now, time to try some rolls.
I don't have a day job, but I'd like to forego my Downtime roll to (pre)finalize my report to the Society for a Grand Lodge Faction Goal (Season 8).
Wisdom DC 15: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
Success! That's one check. Hooray!

No worries Hmm. And welcome back Az! :)
| GM Hmm |
I will move you guys forward tomorrow morning!
Hmm
| GM Hmm |
URK. Clearly I meant that I was moving you forward this morning... Sorry for missing a whole 48 hours there. On the other hand, we're back. Tomorrow expect your first visitors!
Aki Minami

Not a problem Hmm!
In addition to the different suggestions made in Gameplay, Aki can also try to make use her bard song (Distraction, Fascinate) to slow people down as well as try the old 'Beguiling Gift + Manacles' trick!

Tap dancing Aspis agents! Only in my games!
We're getting close to the end here. Is anyone slow-tracking or are you all taking your chronicles at full XP value?
Azhagoth Fellcleaver

I wouldn't be surprised if the agent was secretly tapping out an amazing song in Morse code or something. Haha.
Full XP here, by the way.

Thanks for taking over the game on such short notice Hmm, we appreciate it very much! I'll try to get an Easter Egg posted within the next day or so :)
Also remind me, did we do boon rolls for this game already or did I dream it?
| GM Hmm |
You did not dream it!
BOON ROLLS on a 20 or a 16
Aki: 1d20 ⇒ 3
Az: 1d20 ⇒ 16 1d6 ⇒ 2
Borox: 1d20 ⇒ 20 1d6 ⇒ 4
Dain: 1d20 ⇒ 161d6 ⇒ 6
Ech: 1d20 ⇒ 11
GM: 1d20 ⇒ 8
Oh my. Three boons! I feel like such an over-achiever!
Az, Borox and Dain can you PM me your emails please? I want to make sure you get your player boons!
Aki Minami
|
Congrats boon winners!!! :D
| GM Hmm |
You can get boons in a number of different ways. Some boons appear on your chronicle sheet if you achieve something in an adventure. You'll note that there are two small boons on the Consortium Compact chronicle sheet.
Some boons (like just about every race boon) are earned by GMing a game at a large convention.
Some boons are just won in a lucky roll at a convention.
This game was part of an online convention -- PBP Gameday V -- a whole bunch of tables playing during the same period of time. As a result, Paizo offered players a chance at winning a boon on a lucky roll of a 20 or a 16. (Why those numbers this time? Because James McTeague, our organizer, wanted it to represent this year.)
About half to one-third of the time, someone at the table might win a player boon. Having three show up in a group of five players... That was a streak of great luck.
Enjoy your boon! Hopefully, Jesse (aka Ironhelixx) will send them on to you soon. I have reported the session to him.

| GM Hmm |
Aki, what a lovely Easter Egg! Does anyone else think they will be writing one? If not, I'm going to close up the game later today.
Thank you all.

I'm planning to write one soon, Hmm. Just been a busy couple days and I've been plotting what I'll write.
I also just wanted to say welcome and great job to Borox. Sorry if I stepped on your toes a time or two by botting. Keep up the great role-play and the mechanics of PbP will follow with a bit more experience. I'm definitely still learning, too. I just happen to tend to have a lot of time at work where I can get my posts in. Anyway, thanks for playing and I hope to play with you again soon.
| GM Hmm |
Borox: The Welcome to Pathfinder boon is a special one meant just for newcomers. I pass those out like candy everywhere I go to try to get them to as many newcomers as possible. I wish more GMs knew about it. It's one that can be given out even on regular game days.
Az: Great! I look forward to seeing your Easter Egg!

I didn't know about them at all. I just started our online gaming group's Roll20 PFS Thursday's on the 3rd. I more or less just got going on GMing them because no one else would. The reception has been good even as I am really learning as I go. I should be passing those out as well.
Again, thank you very much for jumping in and running this. I really got into it and where I was once ready to quit, came back and thoroughly enjoyed myself. I think I will sign up for another one of these games down the road!
| GM Hmm |
Oh Borox, I am so happy to hear that I made your first game a good one! Thank you for coming back and for giving PbP another chance.
Welcome to Pathfinder is a special boon that can only be given to -1 PFS character, and only on their first level of play. I like to catch newbies with it before they hit level two!
If you need some help formatting the character sheet in your profile, let me know and I'll stat it up for you on my boyfriend's Herolab program!
Hmm
Borox
|
I've got Borox statted out with HeroLab's demo and I also used PC Gen. I think he's pretty set up. I also did some level 1 revisions per the Guide. I'm not sure how to set up my profile like Az has done though. I've got two more characters to set up as well. One is finished. That would be the PFS version of Xathos, my Elven wizard. The next one will be Finieous Fingers, Elven Rogue. I am hoping to use two of the three on Sunday at this convention.
How often do the PbP games run?
Aki Minami
|
The exact steps to get to it elude me at this hour but HeroLab has an option to spit out an able-to-be-copied-and-pasted version of your character's profile, which you can then just paste it into your alias' profile :)
As far as PFS PbP, the Flaxseed Lodge is the best place to check for new games here on the forums! The method for selecting players tends to vary a little from GM to GM with some being first come, first serve, and others being resolved by a random lotto.
Cup
|
This is Cup, one of GM Hmm's characters. If you click my profile (or for that matter, Aki's) you can see how we set up our headers. The Gender Race and Class headers always show up in gameplay and discussion. So instead of just inputting those pieces of information in the fields, you can include everything a GM might need to consult quickly.
For hero lab, you output your character as BB Code (an option only when not in mobile) and then you can cut and paste your character into the big field on your profile.
Flaxseed runs games all the time. They fill fast, but boy are there a lot of them. Post in Flaxseed's gameplay, and then you'll be able to find it from your campaigns tab. New posts in gameplay and recruitment are usually game announcements.
Hmm
| GM Hmm |
Why don't you try editing your profile with us still around in here? We can all walk you through the process.
Hmm
Borox
|
I didn't know that could be done, and I still do not know how you got it to look the way you did. I see the name/race, class/level stuff, but I don't see how Defense, etc. was put into. I tried doing it in one of the headings and it didn't come out right.
I'm copying and pasting to learn how to get it set up.
| GM Hmm |
Okay, let's go through this!
I see you copied and pasted Aki's information into your own headings. That was good for an experiment, but that is where your own infomation should go. Still, you can edit these headings to reflect your own numbers.
Your full stat block goes into the great big giant box at the bottom of your profile when you edit it, the one marked "About Borox".
Do you see it?
Hmm
