No worries! If I had a GM star, I would use it on this scenario, just because it's so fun!

  • A man of rigid posture walks in. He stands tall, a hand over six feet. His armor is meticulously cleaned to a shine. Across his back rests a shield of mithral, plated with the symbol of The Inheritor. A silver hood is pulled over his head, but it does little to obscure his features. The man's eyes are white - entirely white - lacking in iris and pupil. He speaks few words but they are kind in choice and strong in timbre. At his side is a magnificent longsword with a hilt of electrum and steel. Words in the celestial tongue run down the length of the scabbard, reading "Daybringer."

"Hail and well met good friends." He accentuates the greeting with a fierce grasping of your forearm. "May we find glory in our mission."

Venture-Captain Sheila Heidmarch glances out a window as the last wisps of twilight fade over the Fenwall Mountains. Turning from the sight, she runs her hand along the rustic cabin’s wall and stands beside an occupied wooden bed before addressing you. “This,” the venture captain says, gesturing to the man thrashing around violently, straining against the bonds that lash him securely to the bed, “is our colleague, Kalkamedes. Every night for several weeks now, he has fallen into a deep slumber and tried to sleepwalk right out of his cottage. If not restrained, he marches straight north, eventually falling off a cliff or into a bog as if trying to get himself killed in an attempt to reach an unknown goal.”

As though he were expressing disagreement, the man tied to the bed suddenly begins pumping his limbs even harder, the violent spasms threatening to smash the bed into splinters. “There are those who have recently criticized the Pathfinders for our indifference to the plight of our fellow field agents. It’s time to show that’s not true. I want you to help Kalkamedes, whether he wants it or not. Several of our best spellcasters have attempted an extensive list of magical cures, but whatever sleepwalking curse or effect he’s under tenaciously resists our efforts. All we can do is keep him safe.”

Heidmarch pats him with a degree of professional affection, and Kalkamedes rewards her by trying to swat her with his head. “Kalkamedes’s friends are at their wits’ end, so we are going to attempt the only thing that we have not tried: we’re going to let him go tonight. That’s where you come in. I want you to follow him and keep him safe and in one piece. Let him get to wherever his addled brain thinks he needs to go so badly. Maybe, just maybe, if he gets there, you can find a way to help him. Maybe you can determine who or what did this to him and find a way to undo it.” Heidmarch pulls out a serrated knife. “Now before I cut him free, does anyone have any questions or last minute preparations?”

Jorciel looks at his fellow agents, "I think in this cause we have just cause to restrain the man. I suggest we keep a ...leash... on him. It's for his own good and ours." The paladin is already pulling out rope as he turns to to the Venture Captain. "May we have leave to look for clues here?"

"Kalkamedes is a veteran Pathfinder, though his fame does not extend beyond this area of southern Varisia. Although he is now semi-retired and only forwards the occasional report to the Decemvirate these days, his colleagues continue to respect him for his many prior accomplishments. Other than that, it is all I know of the man from memory," the venture captain tells the group while setting the knife down on the nightstand next to Kalkamedes.

"While time is short, you can search the cabin to find any clues that may help with information about these, nightly walks. As for something to hold him down, as long as you keep him from being harmed too harshly, then it is up to you."

Ack, I was tired and forgot to get something in!

    Knowledge Local 20:
Late in his career, Kalkamedes developed an interest in lore of the ancient runelords and the rare heroes who dared to oppose the runelords’ tyranny. He relocated from Absalom to Varisia for the chance to further his study.

    Knowledge Local 25:
Early in his adventuring career, Kalkamedes swore the oaths to become a paladin and served as a staunch defender of the meek; however, years later he abruptly left his holy order. Few truly understood his decision.

    Knowledge Local 30:
Kalkamedes was sometimes seen carrying a broken sword. Few but his closest friends know that it is actually a sentient blade, and it and Kalkamedes were inseparable.

Paicho moves about the cabin, perusing it. He shuffles from foot to foot, as if about to break into a dance. The tengu is dressed in colorful robes, and his feathers are clean and oiled with a pleasant flowery aroma.

He listens carefully to what the Venture Captain has to say. Then suddenly, speaking with a resounding bravado.

Well Madame, and may I say you are looking most lovely this evening. It seems our friend Kalkamedes is quite lucky that the Magnificent Paicho of Quain was performing near by in Korvosa and was available to come to his aid. Well that's a fun perception check!

Opal, looking through the cabin, with the eyes of an eagle, manages to find what was left of a drawing in the oven. Among the papers and ashes inside, the alchemist also finds a switch.

"Thank you Paicho, you are looking quite well yourself, and your, moral support, would be quite helpful to your team." says the venture captain, with a slight nod towards the others.

Just as the venture-captain begins to explain the strange sight of the thrashing man bound to his bed, another Pathfinder steps into the cabin. ”My deepest apologies,” he says quietly to no one in particular, with a surprisingly courtly bow for one so simply dressed. The man is older than many Pathfinders of his relatively low rank and dressed in faded grey robes, his only extravagance a beautiful bow of black wood extending over his right shoulder. His coloring – the bronzed skin and a few struggling wisps of brown hair – indicate his Taldan birth, and his neatly trimmed beard marks him as being of the noble blood of that land. Strangely, his earlobes have a fringed, almost tentacled look to them, and the tops of his ears look ever so slightly like the wings of a bat.

He listens calmly to the briefing, his focused demeanor very different from the typical scheming, simpering attendee of the court of Grand Prince Stavian III. He nods along as Jorciel reassures Heidmarch that they’ll sort things out, then introduces himself to the others before aiding them in a search of the cottage. ”Prothero Crace, a pleasure to meet you all.”

    Perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (1) + 13 = 14 Not helping much with that roll.

He studies the drawing that Opal has found in the stove and asks, "Does anyone have any idea what that might represent? And what is the switch in the stove about, I wonder?" With a look to his new-found companions to be sure no one objects, he reaches into the stove and moves the switch.

Prothero narrowly missed turning into a vargouille early in his career, and it cost him his hair and gave him some weird-ass ears.

Pleased to meet you as well Prothero. Paicho also gives him a bow in return, he raises both arms and sticks one spindly leg forward before delivering it, as if responding to an adoring crowd.

As Paicho introduces himself in elegant fashion, Prothero gives a bow in return, though not as smoothly as the tengu. "I am from Taldor, by birth," he replies, "though I found I didn't fit in well at court, and left in pursuit of a simpler life." After the switch is flipped, the stove slowly moves towards the side, leaving an opening into the wall. Upon further inspection, it seems that there are some items of note to be found. A slightly battered and locked metal chest catches the light of the room, signifying that even though the years of abuse, was still well made.

"I believe he has made for the same direction every time, but we are not sure as to how much progress he has made. The man, somehow, has always managed to come back, hurt in some sort of manner," the woman tells Opal, before nodding towards Jorciel. Indeed! How exciting Paicho says as he cast Detect Magic over the lot.

If any of the items prove magical. I will use Spellcraft. Rolls as needed.

Paicho, notices that all the items ping with magic, though some seem fainter than others. Looking over the items, the tengu knows that what he can identify are bracers of armor +1, elixer of swimming, potion of hide from undead (inside the flask), and cure light wounds (inside the gourd). Somehow, the cloak and sword couldn't be identified with the bard's talents with magic.

  • "I think the treasure is best used by others, though I considering my armor, I wouldn't mind carrying the elixir. I am curious about the cloak and the sword. Unless someone objects, I wouldn't mind trying to wield it."

Jorciel looks about and makes eye contact with each. "Let us do this." He then begins to untie the poor man from the bed while holding on to the "leash".

Paicho - thanks for the mage armor, meant to say so earlier.

"You're certainly better suited to the blade than the rest of us, Jorciel," Prothero responds, "have at it. Though what you'd want with a broken blade is unclear to me. And take the elixir too, I expect the rest of us won't sink so fast as you."

Studying the other items they've found, Prothero adds, "If no one minds, and since the rest of you are wearing armor, I'll try out these armor bracers, for those moments when Paicho hasn't used my wand on me in a while." As Jorciel begins to untie Kalkamedes, Prothero considers how best to prepare himself, even slipping his bow off his shoulder out of habit. He decides the best thing to do is keep an eye on the sleepwalker and react to whatever happens, and he returns his bow to his back.

Mud stained hair? Sounds like we got an alchemist that isn't into neatness!

Opal, putting on the cloak, feels somewhat protected by it, even through it's thinning fibers and mud stains. Jorciel, taking the blade, notices that it feels much lighter than a normal longsword, and seemingly well made with the exception of the jagged crack down the middle of the blade. After putting the sword into its scabbard and starting to untie the restraints, Sheila Heidmarch starts to help out by opening the door of the cabin.

The night air rushes into the cabin, sending a slight shill of the evening indoors. Getting released, and being tied to a "leash" Kalkamedes begins to take off on his night time adventure, almost dragging the paladin holding his rope with him through the door! Staying inside the cabin, the venture captain nods as the adventurers set of on Kalkamedes' Night March!

Woo, intro done! I have a busy weekend, so in the mean time, I'm going to need how the group watches the poor man. As for Jorciel, if you use the sword, the modifier is going to be a -1/-1.

  • Hmmmm I was hoping to swing it a few times and see if the crack really gets in the way. As for watching him...

Seeing the Paladin struggling a bit to keep Kalkamedes under control he gets another idea about how to keep him under control.

Why don't we tie a robe around his waist in the middle, then spread the two end and tie them around the waists of two of us. If we need to stop him it will be easier for two people using their cores and arms to stop him I think. We can keep the leash on him as well in case of emergencies, if we need three people to restrain him.

Then adds. Is anyone good at scouting ahead just a bit so we have more time to react in case we run into anything hazardous?

"I am told I have sharp eyes," Prothero offers, "I will take the lead and be on the alert for surprises. I'm not sure how far ahead I can be, given that we don't know quite where Kalkamedes is heading." Regarding the sleepwalker and his leash a moment, he offers a suggestion, "I say we keep our arrangement simple, it wouldn't do to turn into trouble and have all of us tied together. And, like Jorciel, I'm reluctant to submit the man to too much indignity at our hands. Why don't we start out with the basic leash we have rigged already, and if it proves hard to manage, we'll change it?"

Prothero will take the lead, with his +13 on Perception.

My sorcerer can cast adhesive spittle, but the alchemist can not, and I never thought to buy any.

Okay, Jorciel, if you think you can handle him I trust your abilities. If he does start to get away I can cast a Grease spell under his feet that will hopefully trip him up. It's not a tanglefoot bag, but it might work.
