Kivuli analyzes Cyran, and realizes:

A PC who demonstrates knowledge of the greater universe with Knowledge (planes) impresses Cyran. A PC who succeeds at a Knowledge (nobility) or Profession (merchant) check can appeal to Cyran’s devotions to the Prophecies. Alternatively, a canny PC can use Bluff to bewilder the accomplished wizard, whose interest in Material Plane matters is minimal.

Tiny analyzes Temel:

Passad is somewhat of a coward, and easily falls prey to bullies using Intimidate to force him to increase his bidding beyond what he’s comfortable with. More social skills, such as Bluff or Diplomacy, can help the PCs talk Temel into throwing most of his wealth at Alabastrine. Finally, discussing the military viability of the Courts of Abstinence using Knowledge (history) prompts Temel to further his bidding.

Syndra analyzes Irith:

A PC who demonstrates knowledge of the greater universe with Knowledge (planes) impresses Cyran. A PC who succeeds at a Knowledge (nobility) or Profession (merchant) check can appeal to Cyran’s devotions to the Prophecies. Alternatively, a canny PC can use Bluff to bewilder the accomplished wizard, whose interest in Material Plane matters is minimal.

For these three bidders, you can make Discovery rolls for both Strengths and Weaknesses, and for the other two when you make a Discovery roll please let me know if it's Strengths, Weaknesses, or Analyze

You're right- I did! Thanks :)

Syndra actually analyzes Irith:

Irith is a merchant by trade, and those using Profession (merchant) in their talks with her appeal to her life’s work. A PC can also use Knowledge (nobility) or Diplomacy to appeal to Irith’s political interests, or use Bluff to cheat his way through negotiations with her.

Drusilia, you recognize that Myrosype is likely beyond the Society's influence. You all can still speak with her and get some more background, but no checks will be required to get additional information.

Members of The Exchange:

You are likely to attempt to gain a new ally in Druma for your faction, the Exchange. Of the NPCs attending the gala, Cyran, Irith, and Vayde can all be convinced to work with the Exchange.

You (a member of the Exchange) must succeed at each of the following objectives to earn the opportunity to gain one of these NPCs as an ally.

  • Succeed at a standard influence check to convince the bidder to contribute more to the bidding for one of the districts.
  • Gain information about that bidder's trade interests with a discovery check. When you attempt a discovery check, you have the opportunity to ask about trade interests instead of the other standard 3 options (Analyze, Strengths, Weaknesses).
  • You must conduct yourself well at that NPC’s event by succeeding at the skill check to impress the host. More details on this later- but basically there will be an opportunity to do something to make the bidders notice you at the event he/she hosts.
  • If you achieve all three of these objectives, you can attempt a special influence check that doesn’t take the entire event to convince the NPC to form a trade partnership with the Exchange.

Regarding overall goal- at the least Myrosype should not get a majority of districts, or the Pathfinder Society will consider this mission a failure. However, as many districts as you can deny her, the better!

Assuming y'all have no more questions for Temel...

You spend a pleasant evening preparing and considering your plans. As day breaks, you dress and gather yourselves to head to Temel Passad's brunch, the first event of the bidding!

Temel Passad hosts the first round of the bidding in his mansion on the waterfront of Lake Encarthan. His event prominently displays the beauty of the lake and the bustle of Kerse’s navy, as well as his prize gardens featuring rare plants from around the Inner Sea region and beyond. He has treated some portions of the garden with a variety of expensive alchemical mixtures to cause the plants to grow in unusual colors and patterns. As you arrive, servants escort you onto the veranda that overlooks the lake, along with the other guests for the event. The final guest is a quiet dwarf named Hegio who represents the Resplendent Bureaucracy by keeping track of the bids submitted and announcing the current lead bidders at the end of the event.

Passad puts on a somewhat humble a air of hors d’oeuvres and fine wines. Since this is the beginning of the bidding, all participants are actively attempting to size each other up. Each of you may perform an additional Discovery check on the bidder that you choose!

All of the Bidders are present- who would you like to speak with?

Great question Solstice- you are trying to convince them that a parcel (or parcels) are a worthy investment given their interests and motivations. The 5 rounds will have all districts available, but essentially a bidder can be convinced they must control a district and thus will lock it up by the 5th and final bid. The standings at the end of the 5th round are the only ones that matter, in that sense.

Scarab Sages

Alabastrine Map and Bidders

For each of these 5 rounds, I'll need to know:
Which bidder are you mainly interacting with?
Are you attempting to Discover or Influence?
If an Influence, which district?
If Discover, is it Analyze, Strengths, or Weaknesses?
I'd like to get everyone's plan first, then we will play it out!

Sorry. Between the election and the fact that I'm at a convention right now I've been hard pressed for time to appropriately absorb all the data here and make an IC post. I think it would be good for us to get each bidder bidding on a separate parcel-- we don't want our bidders competing for the same section and outbidding each other for the same piece of land (and leaving Myrosype to bid on the others), we want each one to have their own they are pursuing. Sorry if someone else already said that. I'm slightly punchy just now, heh.

If permitted before the party, Tiny will relay that ICly to the others, as well as the results of his pre-party Temel Passad check:

"Our host Passad is, how does one say, not so much steel in the spine? I think a little 'heavy lean' may make Temel open the strings of his purse. But also I think he is interested in the military potential of the Courts of Abstinence! I know a little of history and a little of being scary. I think we should aim each bidder at one district, like arrows suited to one target each, yes? Good luck with Mister Cyran, small friend Solstice."

****

At the party itself:

Tiny keeps near Temel, feeling a little ill at ease in his fine clothing that Passad has provided for the party. Tiny's tail swishes back and forth with a bow of black silk tied on the end. That's formal-wear, right?

He listens to Temel talk to other guests, observing the man's mannerisms and what he says to the other guests. It seems to Tiny as if their host is somewhat strained in his finances, judging by the rather humble-- but perfectly adequate-- feast.

(Discovery) Sensing motive again on Temel: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14

(I didn't see anything about needing to try a different skill than we used previously; if it does have to be a different skill, Tiny will go with Kn Local at +4)

It most likely will take more than one person or one check in order to convince them to bid or change their bidding. I'm planning on using Sandra's intellect and prescience to continuously find knowledge checks, and communicate them to Solstice with message. However I would like to know from the GM if each round allows only one check or more importantly, when we are allowed influence checks.

Keep the questions coming if it's not clear, I was confused when I played this in-person so I understand! Yes, each round is a single check, so all PCs will get a chance to make 5 rolls each the rest of the game, essentially. They could be 5 discovery checks, 5 Influence checks, or a mix of the two.

So. I think we need to nail down which district we are attempting to influence each bidder for. I believe Solstice and Syndra's influence rolls require indicating which district you are influencing towards? There has been some discussion to that end but not much solid at all. I left them all ? for the time being.

I think we should try to get them all analyzed a bit more before doing a lot of influencing- especially those of us with good knowledge skills. Just so we can really nail down who will be likely to bid on which districts.

I am much better at social skills so I will attempt to influence, once we learn the outcome of the analyze rolls, if it's possible to wait.

@Solstice- I'm pretty sure all the bids happen at the end of the 5th party. There will probably be bids put in at each party so we will know where they stand relatively, I'm guessing.

Scarab Sages

Dru is exactly correct, only the 5th round matters, but a bidder could be convinced to go "all in" sooner than then, and the end of each round is a good way to see progress

Solstice's plan in round 1 is to Bluff Cyran. She will dress in fiery reds that enhance her connection with the plane of fire, and then bluff him into believing that his contacts in the planes would be very interested in staying in the Prophet’s Burg when visiting, in fact any other location would be an insult. If any of you could boost her roll by a discovery, that would be great. I do believe that discovery success by other PCs in the same round may be used in that round.

Her plan in round 2 is to intimidate Passad into over-bidding on the Courts of Abstinence, suggesting that allowing a military presence in the city unsupervised, or worse, supervised by someone like Myrosype, would be the height of foolishness. Not sure if intimidate is meant to work 'by proxy', but that was my thought. Again, she could use any discoveries that might boost here chances with this.

Her plan in round 3 is to bluff Irith into bidding on the Luminous Wharf, suggesting that it's an easy target as no one has real interest in it but it worth a whole vote towards the city control and that might allow her to maintain a majority and keep control of the city.

Lets see how that goes before round 4.

The Exchange

"Dru" female halfling swashbuckler (mouser) 1 / slayer 1 | HP 18/18, panache 3/4 | AC 20 (21 vs larger), T 15 (16 vs larger), FF 16 | F +3, R +8 (+9 vs trample), W -1 (+1 vs fear) | CMB +1, CMD 15 | Spd 30' | Perc +4, SM +2 | Init +4

Dru, recalling her instructions about finding a new partner, is inspired while listening to Syndra's description of Irith. She determines to seek out the merchant and try to gauge her interest in such a partnership.

"Hello, Lord-Councillor!" she greets her cheerily. She turns on her natural charm while talking business and asking advice from Irith. When the conversation turns towards bidding, Dru says, "I hope that you will continue to maintain your control over Alabastrine. It wouldn't be right for Myrosype to reap the benefits of your investments. I think you should definitely try to win the bid for the Working End so you can take ownership of all those warehouses. And certainly Prophet's Burg since that's where you govern. I might suggest the Wharf as well. I know you aren't interested, but think- it is a symbol of the city. What it was intended and what it will actually be- under your leadership."

She seems likely to be a multiple bidder since she is the current majority holder.

All: because this is the first party, it means that bidders and attendees are mingling much more than usual. In addition to the Discovery or Influence roll you just gave me, give me one additional check. Remember, if you are doing Discovery, I need to know both the bidder and the type (Strengths, Weaknesses, or Analyze). If it is an Influence attempt, please share the bidder's name and the parcel you are convincing them to bid on.

As the evening progresses, you all hear Temel take the opportunity to show off his gardens to various guests. You all realize that he seems particularly engaged by those who are able to hold a conversation with him about some of the more rare species or interesting botanical techniques he has used. Each PC may attempt a Craft (alchemy), Knowledge (nature), or Profession (gardener) check to gain some favor with him.

Solstice

Cyran wears simple plain white robes with minor gold embellishments and an expensive headband. Cyran’s attire is almost heretically drab in comparison to the normally ostentatious strictures of the Prophecies of Kalistrade. The wizard only cares to impress those with at least a basic aptitude for magic.

Solstice, can I get a Bluff check from you for the Influence on Cyran? Also- which parcel are you convincing him to pick?

Raven speaking with Myrosype
Myrosype is an average sized woman with light brown skin, her ethnicity bearing hints of both Casmar and Vudrani. She’s garbed in a white peplos robe secured with a gold Aspis badge and embellished with a golden belt band around her waist. She speaks with a distinct accent—a speech with a measured cadence that one could scrutinize with a metronome and find few flaws. She wears an expensive perfume with hints of burnt incense and balsam.

Give me a Craft (alchemy) or Knowledge (nobility) check if you'd like!

"Yes, indeed it is. A fine setting for such an important occasion. What brings you here, are you with one of the other bidders?"

Kivuli Discovery on Vayde

Vayde is a skeletally gaunt man, whose bones visibly protrude from his ashen, papery skin. He looks comically tiny in impressive regalia of Kalistocratic robes, bedecked with jewels, numerous golden and platinum embellishments, and a gilded drake’s body.

As Kivuli watches Vayde's interactions, he starts to discover a slight pattern of interest whenever the Scriptum is mentioned. It appears that Vayde attempts to keep this below the notice of those he speaks with, so perhaps in this case it might be an opportunity for you to subtly reveal your discovery.

Tiny Discovery on Temel

Tiny spends the day nearby Temel, and watches him greet other guests. It does, however, seem like he is particularly cowed when interacting with the other bidders. Temel Passad is a tall man with carefully groomed hair and an oiled beard. He wears pristine white clothing heavy with gold embroidery and gems. In following the tenets of the Prophets of Kalistrade, he avoids physical contact with others and partakes in only a small amount of food or other refreshments.

Temel has no direct weakness, but instead his diminished presence among the other bidders humbles him. You know that Temel can easily be persuaded to increase his bidding on the districts of the city with any social skill.

Syndra
Syndra- to confirm, you're doing an Influence on Vayde with your Knowledge(Local) roll?

Drusilia
To be clear up front- the Influence check failed

Irith Nomzamo is a tall Garundi woman, bedecked in white robes and a gem-studded cloth of gold mantle. Her robes are augmented with numerous spiked embellishments that make physical contact with the lord-councilor difficult. She speaks in a constant deep timbre, always making eye contact with her prominent jade-colored eyes.

"Hello, Drusilia, it is a pleasure to meet you. There are indeed many possibilities, but I am a bit unsure about your recommendation for me. I am quite disappointed in the lack of resources I am getting from Alabastrine, but excited by the potential still held within the city. It does seem that timing is key, after all. What makes you so certain that I am looking to maintain a stranglehold on the city?"

Assuming I can't do my second check against her since I already failed? I will attempt to influence Vayde then.

Hearing from Kivuli about Vayde's interest, Dru pursues the gaunt man and tries to convince him that the Scriptum is desired by all the bidders.

Solstice
Solstice unfortunately finds that at first, Cyran essentially ignores her, but she is able to engage him in further conversation later on.

Strengths: Cyran despises being told that he needs others to prosper. A PC who attempts to sell the importance of an alliance based on the premise that Cyran needs additional support takes a –4 penalty on the check.

Raven
Temel replies, ecstatic to discuss the details of his garden. He elucidates the varieties, as well as the particular ways he needed to modify the shade requirements for each of the blooms. He then asks, "Have you had much experience of your own with gardening?" After hearing Raven's reply, he nods and smiles. "It is excellent to meet one who is as enchanted by beauty as I!"

Kivuli
Kivuli swings by Raven while she is speaking with Myrosype, and realizes that Myrosype's perfume is known as Lady’s Promise, a scent that is becoming increasingly popular among members of the Chelish nobility.

Syndra
Syndra takes some time to suitably impress Temel Passad as well, with her knowledge of plants and the effort he put into his gardens.

Unfortunately, Vayde seems uninterested in hearing about local politics, and certainly doesn't understand how the planes are involved with his goals. He looks at Syndra and asks, "What do you think I am most interested in?"

Tiny
Aids Solstice’s Intimidate against Temel to Influence (once we get it)

Drusilia
Vayde pauses, and seems concerned. "You don't really believe that the others are focusing on the Scriptum?"

Congrats Drusilia! That's a success to influence Vayde on the Scriptum!

Sorry about that, I was hanging tight for a last garden-roll, but I think that keeping along a "Progress Bar" (like Dru set up earlier) along with per-character updates could be much more helpful. Let me know if anything was missed and I'll keep it updated going forward!

Progress at the end of Temel's Party:

Discovery rolls are accomplished via Knowledge (local), Knowledge (nobility), or Sense Motive

Cyran Androtus
District: 1 Success on Luminous Wharf
Analyze: A PC who demonstrates knowledge of the greater universe with Knowledge (planes) impresses Cyran.
Strengths: Cyran despises being told that he needs others to prosper. A PC who attempts to sell the importance of an alliance based on the premise that Cyran needs additional support takes a –4 penalty on the check.
Weaknesses
Influence Knowledge (Planes or Nobility), Profession (Merchant), Bluff

Irith Nomazamo
District
Analyze: Irith is a merchant by trade, and those using Profession (merchant) in their talks with her appeal to her life’s work. A PC can also use Knowledge (nobility) or Diplomacy to appeal to Irith’s political interests, or use Bluff to cheat his way through negotiations with her.
Strengths
Weaknesses
Influence Profession (Merchant), Knowledge (Nobility), Diplomacy, Bluff

Myrosype
Influence Unable to be influenced by the Pathfinder Society

Temel Passad
District: 1 success on Courts of Abstinence
Analyze: Passad is somewhat of a coward, and easily falls prey to bullies using Intimidate to force him to increase his bidding beyond what he’s comfortable with. More social skills, such as Bluff or Diplomacy, can help the PCs talk Temel into throwing most of his wealth at Alabastrine. Finally, discussing the military viability of the Courts of Abstinence using Knowledge (history) prompts Temel to further his bidding.
Strengths
Weaknesses
Influence Bluff, Diplomacy, Knowledge (History)

Vayde Petronax
District: 1 Success on the Scriptum
Analyze
Strengths
Weaknesses
Influence

The Exchange
Details in this earlier post

Vayde and Temel are eagerly convinced of the benefits of the districts you influenced them toward, and Cyran grudgingly agrees that there is more to the Luminous Wharf than he initially suspected.

Hegio, the member of the Resplendent Bureacracy, ends the evening by announcing the current high bidders:

Prophet’s Burg: Myrosype
Scriptum: Vayde
Working End: Myrosype
Courts of Abstinence: Temel Passad
Luminous Wharf: Cyran

Current Progress

Nighttime heralds the welcoming of your group to Vayde Petronax’s temporary estate in Kerse. The event is held in a vivacious ballroom. Servants offer you all a variety of costumes and allow you to select whichever ones appeal to you most. Provided costumes represent dozens of deific servants, from demons to devils to psychopomps and angels. You can select an appropriate costume, and those who have at least 1 rank in Knowledge (religion) or Knowledge (planes) can specify a particular outsider that you wish to imitate.

Due to the costumes, you receive a small benefit to Bluff and a penalty to Sense Motive!

Impressing the Host
Vayde is interested in the reasoning behind each attendee’s costume choice. Give me at a Perform (act, oratory, or comedy) check or Knowledge (planes) check to provide a sufficiently entertaining or well-informed answer to satisfy Vayde.

I'm sorry do I get two garden rolls? For this I rolled one sense motive and a garden to influence for the day. If we do get three how ever I can roll that right now. garden: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Once at the party Raven will ask for a angel costume, hoping to help emulate the servants of her God, giving a small answer as to why she felt suck a connection to the forces of good.
Oratory: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
Once her white wings were in place she would head off into the party, looking to meet up with Irith. Once she had stumbled across her at the party she would offer a curt bow before speaking. "My what a wonderful ball. It's my first time at a party with such a theme and I must admit I am enjoying more then I thought I would. I have heard you are taking part in the bidding, have you heard much about the Working End?"
diplomacy: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10

As an ifrit, Solstice does not have to make anything up to justify her costume, she simply tells the story of her birth during a volcanic eruption on winter solstice in Varisia. She spices it up with an Oratory: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17.

Her plan in round 3 is to bluff Irith into bidding on the Working End, suggesting that it's an easy target as no one has real interest in it (the bluff part) but it worth a whole vote towards the city control (actually not a bluff, but the truth!). If she can just outbid Myroscope the city will be split 5 ways and the council will surely vote for Irith to control the city as a whole! (it could actually work too!)

The wayang gets very excited telling his story. Unfortunately, he keeps switching through several different languages all throughout his tale. With laughter, and tears and his eyes, he ends with, "...and so I am dressed as an imp!"

Dru selects a sea monster costume, then hangs around Vayde, attempting to learn more about him as well as impress him. She acts out a humorous story about escaping the clutches of a similar creature once.

Syndra dresses as a Succubus and gives a lengthly explanation as to why.

Sorry, few questions: are costumes optional or mandatory; also:

GM:
Is the Exchange mission to get one of the three listed to become a trading partner, or all three? Tiny's terrible at both the options to influence Vayde, but if we have to influence all three, he'll give it a shot. Otherwise I'd have him focus on the general mission at this party.

Tiny, if I'm following along correctly, then the Exchange only needs to influence one merchant to collaborate. Since you all are working together, I believe the whole Exchange will succeed if one merchant is convinced to collaborate. I can follow up if that isn't clear! Also, costumes are not mandatory, but suggested :)
