“I have a mission for you,” says Istivil Bosk, the Venture-Captain of Daggermark in the River Kingdoms.

After receiving the assignment from Venture-Captain Adril Hestram in Absalom, traveling
for weeks across the Inner Sea and up the lengthy
Sellen River, and with barely an hour to adjust to Daggermark’s
sights and sounds, the Venture-Captain of Daggermark now
paces back and forth across cramped quarters crammed full
of maps, books, and adventuring gear.

“Your timing is perfect, friends,” explains Bosk, an elderly
man with graying hair and a pinched, weathered face. He
waves a parchment in his hand.
“I received another letter just
yesterday.”
He holds up another stack of letters.

“It’s from the Black Marquis—I believe his real name is Bazzak—the leader
of a band of brigands surreptiously known as the Pirate Pact.
In all of these letters, he claims to need our help and offers
us The Memoirs of the Silver Brotherhood, a rare text—maybe
the rarest—in exchange. The Society tried for years to track it
down and now Bazzaks claims to be ready to give it to us. I’m
sending you north to Deadbridge near the Echo Wood to meet
this Black Marquis and offer him your help with whatever it is
he needs. I want this book, and you’ll get it for me.”

Here is where you would have a chance to exchange character introductions, backgrounds, purchases etc

And so the mission travels north along the Sellen River, to
the aptly named village of Deadbridge, a rundown hamlet
partially built on wharves. It is there, in a rundown antique
manor house where stands Urdul Bazzak, the Black Marquis.

“I rule the Pirate Pact and with it the stretch of the Sellen
River between here and Numeria,”
proudly states the portly
little man.

“The waterways are the lifeblood of the River
Kingdoms, so you must understand that any menace to the
river is a menace to the balance of power.”

The Black Marquis stops and quickly looks to his left and right before leaning
in and continuing in hushed tones.

“Unless someone deals
with this threat soon, I could lose everything. Normally I
would rely on my most trusted lieutenants, but …”
Bazzak
sits up, regains some composure, and resumes.
“The book I’m willing to trade for your service—The Memoirs of the
Silver Brotherhood—contains information about an Azlanti
treasure vault deep within the Echo Wood. That’s where I sent
my most trusted lieutenants. Only, on their way they were
waylaid by spiders and abominations and only one returned
alive. Lady Riverbane sent out another ship upon her return,
the Hanspur’s Luck, to search for my men. The Luck hasn’t
returned either.”

Bazzak points to the only other person in
the room, a raven-haired beauty standing in a corner.
“Lady Riverbane is my most trusted second, and she will take one
of my best ships and guide you back to the Azlanti vault. Rid
the river of these monstrous spiders and their abominations,
find the Hanspur’s Luck, and uncover the whereabouts of my
men, and the book is yours. Do it quickly, do it quietly, and do
it before the rest of the Pact realize I’ve sent my best men on
fools’ errands that may have killed them all.”

“Ahrr! Smell the refreshing salt air, me hearties! Can’t wait to set sail for the Shackles and sign up as a pirate under the Black Marquis!”

The somewhat confused person standing before you is a plain featured young Chelaxian woman of about average height. She wears cut-off navy denim pants, high black jack-boots and a blue-and-white striped sleeveless jersey exposing a midriff and biceps that suggest she is a fan of working out. Her left eye is a startling sapphire blue, while her right is covered by a black eye-patch. Mousey brown hair peeks out from beneath a bicorne hat, made of tanned rabbit fur.

Knowledge (Religion or Local) DC 10:
Her outfit appears to be modified cleric vestments of Besmara, the Pirate Queen.

A stuffed toy parrot wearing a furry black beard has been inexpertly sewed to her top, so that it flops upside-down to the side of her left shoulder.

“Me parrot be called ‘Ambrus’ and I be Eadie. He ain’t dead, he’s just resting. Ahrr! Pleased to meet ya, mateys.”

She drops her ‘pirate voice’ and confides to the others. “Frankly, I was tired of being a Pathfinder anyway. Always getting told what to do, like ‘You’re not allowed to kill Mr Such-and-such and I can’t tell you why …’ Oh, and at the end of the mission, you hand over ALL your treasure to some useless, vainglorious Venture-Captain.”

“Nope, I can’t wait to start a new life of pillage and plunder on the Fever Sea! Ahhr!!”

A high pitch cackling laughter explodes from the tengu after Eadie's candid proclamation. His brown feathered body begins to rock, thin frame extends and flexes, with an upturning of large beak to the blue sky. He wipes away a few tears before extending his claw for a handshake after composing himself.

"Truer words have never been spoken! My name is Nokazi Stoneclaw, and it a pleasure to make with your acquaintance. Few have better eyes for finding trouble and traps. I recommend stocking up on antitoxins if you haven't already. Spider poison can be quite deadly."

A tall and rather thin man stands before you. In all respects, he appears to be a demon with large horns and small, atrophied wings on his back, but his quiet voice eases any initial tension:

"Greetings pathfinders, my name is Malus."

Dressed in simple, dark clothing, he carries a combat cestus and buckler along with a very well-crafted backpack, a bandolier across his chest appears filled with various objects. You seem to have some difficulty ascertaining his chosen combat specialty.

A tiny, vicious-looking flying dinosaur rests on his shoulder, its eyes quickly darting to each individual as they enter the room. A background in adventuring indicates to you that this is probably the familiar of an arcane caster.

A previously-overlooked halfling smirks in response to Eadie's suggestion that they were somehow becoming something other than Pathfinders, but keeps his mouth shut. He stands dressed in a mithral chain shirt, and you occasionally catch glimpses of wrist sheath straps poking out from under his clothing.

Once he realizes it's his turn to introduce himself, he flashes a smile. "The name's Holman; I recently spent some time sailing the Shackles myself," he says, with a nod to Eadie, "and I expect I'll be doing so again fairly soon. However, as this is a river journey, I doubt we'll have to deal with quite the same flavor of issue here as there."

He turns his attention to the Black Marquis. "Just so we're clear. You're saying that we are to fight our way upriver, through giant spiders and other creatures, to try and find your missing ship and crew, and in return, you'll give us the book? Seems easy enough."

Eadie lifts the eye-patch covering another deep blue eye to get a better look at Nokazi.

“Say, you’re a tengu, right Mr Stoneclaw? My fiancé was a tengu … and come to think of it. He looked a bit like you! His name was Rackle Rakis.”

Eadie looks hopeful. “Do you know him?”

"Oh, and I'm not actually a healer. I'm hoping someone else will be able to use my CLW wand on me if necessary."

She waves to Malus and Holman “Hi!” … before seeking some clarification regarding the halfling’s statement.

Turning to Holman...

"That is correct small one. If you complete this request, the book will be yours. Any other questions? If not, you are to meet Lady Riverbane on the Scrag Fisher at the docks in a two hours."

feel free to post any followup questions or actions...otherwise, I assume you eventually head for the docks.

Following the audience with the Black Marquis, you can roam the streets of Deadbridge before heading for the docks.

At the appointed time, you spot and rendezvous with the Black Marquis’s
ship: the Scrag Fisher, a 50-foot long, single-masted
vessel rigged with a lugsail.

Lady Riverbane is calling orders and several able-bodied sailors are already on board preparing for departure.

"Are you five ready then? We set sail within the hour."

Captain Riverbane welcomes you aboard. This dashing

"Greetings again. I trust you are ready. Welcome aboard, Pathfinders. Don't mind my crew. They have their jobs to do, as you have yours. We should be underway momentarily."

Eadie reports to the Scrag Fisher dressed in her pirate outfit (sans eyepatch). Though she wears a set of high quality lamellar leather over her jersey and sports an array of melee weapons including “A two-handed cutlass – just in case.”

Once they get underway, the young Pathfinder draws a fishing kit from her luggage, asking the captain for “Permission to go to fishing stations, ma’am!”

After catching enough fish to feed a small army navy, including an 8lb rainbow trout (!) Eadie retreats to the galley, offering to assist the Fisher’s cook in preparing a meal for the crew.

“One of my best friends is a gnomish priestess who taught me everything I know about cooking!”

Boring Bookkeeping – FYI GM Aarvid:
I will deduct 5 sp for a fishing kit (from Ultimate Equipment), 210gp for Masterwork lamellar leather armor, 2 more alchy’s fire (2 x 20gp) and another antitoxin (50gp).

GM Aarvid, is Hawk still playing? If not, I will also buy some healing potions if that’s OK.

She keeps the trout stew for her companions, personally handing out steaming bowls to Malus and Hawk, before climbing up to the crow’s nest to serve Nokazi his meal.

“Bon appétit!” Behind her hand knowingly she adds “That’s Tien you know.”

Ripper is a Rhamphorhynchus, a small flying dinosaur with vicious teeth. They are known to be able to use their size and speed to attack so swifty such that it precludes a reaction from opponents.

Malus grins and shouts up to the Tengu on his way to the stairs, "Do not worry, he does not bite... much."

I'm sure its just a case of being busy for the holidays with Hawk, but worst case, would we recruit more considering we haven't really started yet?

Rebels Map

Hawk should be here, so I expect him to post today. If not I can recruit one more. At tier 3-4 this does not have overly tough combats.

As you become acquainted with the Scrag Fisher, you see she is a 50-foot long, single-masted vessel rigged with a lugsail.
Besides the captain, there are 6 sailors as part of the crew. 3 on deck at any time. One shouts...

"All set, Captain!"

Captain Riverbane motions the crew cast off the lines and you set off down the river to your destination.

"And we are off...no turning back now."

The map has been updated at the top of the thread. Place yourselves as you see fit for the journey.

Nokazi bows and accepts his fish stew. He pecks for a sip to ascertain its flavor.

I copied Malus and made Nokazi 50% transparent to designate his position in the crow's nest.

As the first day goes by, you realize the Captain is skilled at her craft and well respected by her crew.
The crew work in shifts and do not say much while working but in the course of the trip, you hear their names.
Andrezi, Esmerelda, Fox, Thorpe, Tormer, and Viorel.

When off duty and below deck, they are a bit more talkative

Eadie:

1d20 ⇒ 12
You overhear from Tormer "Zukka Nephmet, an alchemist of Osirion, left a few days ago on a boat—the Hanspur’s Luck—bound for Echo Wood."

Malus:

1d20 ⇒ 13
You learn from Viorel that "Larkus Lockinvar, a fugitive of Cheliax, was part of the ill-fated expedition into Echo Wood."

Since it left Deadbridge, the Scrag Fisher has been cutting a straight
furrow into the lazy waters of the Sellen River, making good speed
thanks to its industrious crew actively manning the ship’s
sail and ropes.

Towards the end of the first dog watch, as she slings her hammock to go to sleep, Eadie will mention quietly to her companions. “According to Tormer, Zukka Nephmet, an alchemist of Osirion, left a few days ago on a boat—the Hanspur’s Luck—bound for Echo Wood."

“He must be one of the Black Marquis’ men sent off by Lady Riverbane. Do you think there’s any chance Lady Riverbane may be in league with the abominations that abducted the previous crew?”

Eadie then pulls a golden cloak from her backpack, wraps herself up in it and goes to sleep. Before she does so, you notice the cloak has a number of appliqué patterns expertly stitched onto it including: a fiery angel, golden key, antlered longbow and a blood-soaked rose.

“Nighty-night! I might chat some more to Tormer in the morning.”

With Hawk bowing out, I am OK with you recruiting another player, GM Aarvid.

Rebels Map

I have one more coming.

A dwarf is spotted on the riverbank hailing your craft. He was an important message for Hawk. The captain has the crew make for the shore and the dwarf and Hawk exchange a few words and then Hawk departs. The dwarf is left and requests permission to board.

"I must depart immediately for another mission. " says Hawk.

Rhuul comes onboard with Hawk's departure. Captain Riverbane has the crew push away from the shore and restarts the craft along the river.

"Make haste, gentlemen! We have lost enough time. We must double our efforts to make our schedule!"

Deadbridge is already far behind when an
exclamation rises.

“Sail Ho!” One of the robust sailors points
ahead while turning toward Lady Riverbane standing at the
helm.

“It’s a cog, Milady. And it flies no colors—should we
tender these trespassers?”

Looking at the incoming vessel,
Lady Riverbane answers in a stern voice:
“Nay! Not today, man.
We have our mission. We’ll stick to it.”

Without another word,
the crew gets back to working the hawser and lanyards. As the
two ships draw closer, the other craft’s pitiful state becomes
obvious. With planks and riggings missing in places, sailors
frantically move about the deck and appear to have difficulty
steering their ship.

As the two ships avoid collision and pass
alongside each other, a shout rises—
”Now!”
—followed by a volley of grappling hooks from the other vessel.

The Scrag Fisher is under attack!

Archer on Eadie shortbow: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13 for dmg: 1d6 ⇒ 5

The hail of arrows skip across the deck and rigging, but none find their mark.

Holman still up before swordsmen go...

Malus hears the shouts of combat above and activates his wand before heading topside.

EDIT - just realized the crew on our boat is on our side...

Holman bides his time, waiting until after the swordsmen have boarded the Scrag Fisher.

Delay until he has a melee target

Rebels Map

Holman stays easily hid within the shadows of the deck.

The three remaining swordsmen back up and run and jump across the gap between the ships.

She draws a wand and a sword as she moves to the ladder on the forecastle.

Assuming I didn't get the post above, Rhuul somewhat repeats himself. Let me know if that is already in effect, if so he'll attack

Unfurling the flag in his left hand, it flutters out in the breeze showing the Rune of the Open road, the symbol of the pathfinder society. The team feel inspired!

Flagbearer, everyone now gets +1 to hit and damage, and +1 vs fear

"What did the pirate pay for his earring? " scowls Rhuul.

"His Swashbuckl-EAR" of course!

And the aforementioned apology: Pirate jokes=inspire courage for another +1 to hit, damage and vs fear. Everyone post Rhuuls initiative will be at +2/+2.

@Rhuul, I did not want to presume the same actions since you have a combatant nearby. But yes, your action occurs and inspire is now in effect.

Rhuul unfurls his banner and starts his inspiring banter.

Holman uses the opportunity to spring into action and impales one of the swordsmen.

Eadie takes full advantage of the bolstering jokes and manages to hit the other intruder, smashing him in the head, dropping to the deck with a thud.

Rhuul's inspire came in just at the end of the first round

Nokazi fires off a pair of arrows. The first one is well aimed and drops one of the archers at the bow of the enemy craft.

And in turn …

Malus quicky summons a pair of eagles. The first one, manages to scratch one talon across the cheek of an archer.

Eadie drops her morning star near the fallen buccaneer.

“Morning star at night, pirate’s delight!”
“Morning star in the morning … uh … pirate gets smacked around a bit.”

She then takes a running leap over the gunwale of the Scrag Fisher onto the deck of the Waverender. As she sails through the air she takes inspiration from the googly-eyed, blue-furred toy-monster she had as a child, and cries …
