Nokazi Stoneclaw |
"Oh, I think I may know this one. What is a hole for a copper, Mr Irontoe?"
Nokazi cackles in delight.
"You two are the best! I could listen to your wonderful stories until dawn. I relish the comradeship with our team. If you don't mind, I'll scout ahead as before."
Nokazi stealthily scouts fifteen ahead in the same marching order wary for more traps.
Trapfinding, T10: 10 + 13 = 23
Stealth, T10: 10 + 16 = 26
Rhuul Irontoe |
"Two excellent answers. I was thinking of a cave, or a mine, or even a hole. I do like the mothers heart though - very figerative."
He looks at the swordslady with a shrewd eye.
"An answer I have not been given before. Then again, that may say more about the company I usually keep. Miners - given them a seam of ore and an ale and the quality of the humour doesn't have to be high."
He peers into the cave, trying to see the stealthy Tengu.
"Time to follow Mr Stoneclaw I think."
Giving Nokazi a thirty foot head start, Rhuul follows as quietly as he can.
Takes ten for.. ahh.. nine. Oh come on, have you ever heard of a stealthy bard? Well, since first edition AD&D :-)
GM Aarvid |
Down the dark passageway, you find a grisly scene.
The tunnel opens into a large cavern. Thick layers of sagging
webs choke the room from floor to ceiling. Beyond the mass
of tangles, jade flames burn about a rough pyramid-shaped
dais, bathing the whole chamber in an eldritch green glow.
Gruesome carcasses and human-sized cocoons dangle from
ghastly strands. In places, walls are covered with worn-out
bas-reliefs and faded markings. The air smells of dust, decay,
and death.
Rhuul Irontoe |
"I recall that many spiders keep their, ahh, food, alive but paralyised. It stops it going off so fast. If those figures are the crew, some may yet live." offers Rhuul.
He hurries up to join Nokazi.
"Do you see any movement?" Rhuul looks up as well as down.
Once again he unfurls his pathfinder flag, waving it in the still air of the cave.
"Explore! Report! Cooperate! Even with pirates!"
He adds in a lower voice. "I draw the line at cooperating with spiders. Especially when it comes to dinner."
Eadie Navhelan |
“Miners - give them a seam of ore and an ale and the quality of the humour doesn't have to be high.”
Eadie’s eyes sparkle. “Perhaps there is something to what you say, Master Dwarf.”
“Often when I have come across working men in social situations, I have found their laughter come to an embarrassed halt as I approach. And their stories too! Except for when they take a most unexpected turn, judging by the looks on the audience’s faces. The punchline appears shortly after, and is far less amusing than I would expect from such fun-loving folk.”
♞♞♞♞
Eadie whispers. “Is this some kinda weird shrine?”
She takes her cue from the scouts and keeps a sharp lookout for hidden foes.
Take 10 Perception: 10 + 11 = 21
Holman Nimblefingers |
Holman grins, "Well, let's do our best to keep them from sating their appetites, yeah?" He makes his way into the cave.
Stealth (Take 10): 10 + 15 = 25
Perception (Take 10): 10 + 9 = 19
GM Aarvid |
As your group moves into the larger cave, despite the shadows and webs, Nokazi spots something on the eastern wall that looks suspicious. The glint of trip-wires crossing the floor.
The room is dim light from the green glow unless another light source being used.
Nokazi Stoneclaw |
He whispers, "Watch your step. Holman, will you aid me in dismantling the trip wire?"
Nokazi casts guidance on himself using his Jade Pathfinder in each attempt to disable the trap.
Disable Device, attempt 1: 1d20 + 16 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 16 + 1 = 24
Disable Device, attempt 2: 1d20 + 16 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 16 + 1 = 31
Results before aid another. Nokazi has low light vision.
Holman Nimblefingers |
Holman attempts to aid Nokazi, kneeling down and following the trip wires to their source, then trying to disable the triggering mechanism.
Disable Device (Aid Another): 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (4) + 11 = 15
Rhuul Irontoe |
"I know a trick or two if you like. It will let whoever is here know that someone is here though. Still, it will also let you see what is in there..."
Assuming others agree...
"It's amazing how much the kids like this one.."
Casts dancing lights. Starts a bit away from the group and 'walks' around the cavern giving us a view of what may be there.
Malus Tenebrae |
Malus has darkvision.
Disable Device (Aid Another): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23
"There, that should do it." he whispers.
GM Aarvid |
Nokazi moves up to disable to the trip threads while assisted by Holman and Malus.
Once the last string is successfully cut, a brutally large slab of stone swings down and slams into the wall.
At that point there is movement 20' high on the ceiling as crawling humanoid creatures spring into action.
Eadie: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
Holman: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
Malus: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26
Nokazi: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21
Rhuul: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (9) + 0 = 9
E : 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
26-Malus
21-Nokazi, Holman
17-Monsters
16-Eadie
9-Rhuul
=== Surprise Round ===
These hideous purple creatures walk upright like a man, but their faces are of a spider, and hands are sickle-shaped claws.
Targets : 2d5 ⇒ (4, 5) = 9
Web Eadie range touch : 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17 DC15 or entangled
Web Rhuul range touch : 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26 DC15 or entangled
Malus, Nokazi and Holman are up
Rhuul Irontoe |
Rhuul does his best to avoid the webs coming towards him.
"Not again!" he sighs.
reflex: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
And luck would seem to be with him this time. Or maybe it is the razor sharp dwarven reflexes.
"Luck it is! What did one fly say to the fly next to it in the web?"
He looks around, in case Eadie wasn't so lucky.
"I'm happy to be stuck with you."
Flagbearer and inspire courage +2/+2; Flagbearer will be active this round, the inspire course is probably a next round effect, so just +1/+1 unless you delay until after Rhuul in initiative.
Holman Nimblefingers |
Holman will ready an attack to charge a spider-creature if it gets in reach.
Attack (+1 Adamantine Dagger, Flagbearer, Piranha Strike, Charge): 1d20 + 10 + 1 - 1 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 10 + 1 - 1 + 2 = 23
Damage (+1 Adamantine Dagger, Flagbearer, Piranha Strike, Sneak Attack (Scout's Charge)): 1d3 + 1 + 1 + 2 + 2d8 ⇒ (1) + 1 + 1 + 2 + (7, 1) = 13
Eadie Navhelan |
"What is a hole for a copper, Mr Irontoe?"
I hope we’re not all in jeopardy!
Reflex: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Ugh … could be worse I suppose. Do I at least know what these things are?
Knowledge (dungeoneering): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22
“I’m not stuck for options, Mr Irontoe. That's for sure. Let’s get these things!”
Dex = 10 ; AC = 20
Nokazi Stoneclaw |
Nokazi retrieves the dangling bow from his weapon cord and aims it at the half spider to the west.
Rapid Shot 1: 1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 8 + 1 = 26
damage: 1d8 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 3 + 1 = 5
Rapid Shot 2: 1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 8 + 1 = 23
damage: 1d8 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 3 + 1 = 6
I didn't include sneak attack damage since they aren't flat-footed.
Malus Tenebrae |
I don't want to hold things up here, going to cast daze dc 14 vs Will. Sorry, can't ccoherently post more.
Eadie Navhelan |
I think we’re doing pretty well, considering what day it is ;)
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S, M (a pinch of wool or similar substance)
Range close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Target one humanoid creature of 4 HD or less
Duration 1 round
Saving Throw Will negates; Spell Resistance yes
This spell clouds the mind of a humanoid creature with 4 or fewer Hit Dice so that it takes no actions. Humanoids of 5 or more HD are not affected. A dazed subject is not stunned, so attackers get no special advantage against it. After a creature has been dazed by this spell, it is immune to the effects of this spell for 1 minute.
A dazed condition typically lasts 1 round.
GM Aarvid |
Malus reacts to the dark creatures and aims a spell at one of them on the cave wall.
Will : 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23
However the spider eyes do not flinch as the spell strikes their many facets.
Nokazi fires a pair of arrows upward and both bury deep into the creature despite cutting through the cover of the webs. The creature shrieks in pain.
Holman prepares to charge.
more to come tonight...from hotel.
GM Aarvid |
The two creatures effortlessly climb down the thick webs and attack Eadie and Rhuul at the rear of the party.
Holman, you do not have a charge lane due to the webs and/or other party members. So ready does not go off yet
On Eadie bite: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14 for bite dmg: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3 plus fort vs poison
On Rhuul bite: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9 for bite dmg: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4 plus fort vs poison
However, both miss their targets.
Eadie, Rhuul and then top of the round...
Eadie Navhelan |
Eadie waits for Rhuul to act before laying into the red creature with her enchanted falchion.
falchion + PA + FF + flag-inspired – entangled: 1d20 + 11 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (4) + 11 + 2 - 2 = 15
damage + flag-inspired: 2d4 + 14 + 2 ⇒ (1, 4) + 14 + 2 = 21
Giant spiders, cocooned captives, dwarves and a halfling … someone should turn that into a play, and release it the day after Crystalhue!
Eadie then takes a 5' step to the south-east.
Rhuul Irontoe |
"Fangs for thinking of me, but I'll skip dinner." says Rhuul, waving his waraxe in a threatening manner as he moves to flank one of the spiders with Eadie.
5' steps to allow flanking for Eadie, giving her an extra +2 to hit (as she delayed action, her attack above should be two higher), and a standard action to start bardic music-inspire courage bringing everyone up to +2/+2;
Rhuul Irontoe |
Actually, relooking at the map, I'm not sure Eadie does get flanking, it depends on the size of the spiders - I was looking at hte box around them not the picture. DM will have to double check - Rhuul is still going to do the step no matter what.
Nokazi Stoneclaw |
Nokazi moves and attack nearest foe and will flank if possible.
"Who commands you?!?"
Bite, power attack -2, Flag, IC: 1d20 + 9 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 9 - 2 + 2 = 16
slashing dmg: 1d3 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 6 + 2 = 11
sneak attack: 1d6 ⇒ 4
GM Aarvid |
Rhuul steps over, but not quite enough to flank the creature with Eadie.
Eadie steps up despite being entangled in the web and swings her falchion.
miss: 1d100 ⇒ 57 on 1-20
In an area of dim light, a character can see somewhat. Creatures within this area have concealment (20% miss chance in combat) from those without darkvision or the ability to see in darkness.
With a single slash across its throat, the creature drops to the ground twitching.
Nokazi, with bow in hand, moves over to the remaining spider creature and attempts to bite it.
miss: 1d100 ⇒ 45 on 1-20
The birdman's beak takes a big chunk out of the creature.

=== Round 2 ===
26-Malus
21-Nokazi, Holman
17-Monster
16-Eadie (entangled)
9-Rhuul (inspiring)
Malus and Holman are up...
Holman Nimblefingers |
Holman makes his way around to where he can reach the remaining spider creature, then stabs with his magical dagger.
Move action: As indicated on map
Standard action: Attack remaining spider creature
Attack (+1 Adamantine Dagger, Flagbearer, Inspire Courage, Piranha Strike): 1d20 + 10 + 1 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (19) + 10 + 1 + 1 - 1 = 30
Damage (+1 Adamantine Dagger, Flagbearer, Inspire Courage, Piranha Strike): 1d3 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 1 + 1 + 1 + 2 = 8
Critical Confirm (+1 Adamantine Dagger, Flagbearer, Inspire Courage, Piranha Strike): 1d20 + 10 + 1 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (7) + 10 + 1 + 1 - 1 = 18
Critical Damage (+1 Adamantine Dagger, Flagbearer, Inspire Courage, Piranha Strike): 1d3 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 1 + 1 + 1 + 2 = 7
Rhuul Irontoe |
Out of turn as I'll be travelling.
Rhuul moves the dancing lights he made earlier to illuminate the surviving spider.
Rhuul will keep his inspire courage up. On his turn he will 5' step to give flanking to Eadie, and then swing his waraxe
attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23
damage: 1d10 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
GM Aarvid |
Holman dashes up and stabs at the spider creature.
miss: 1d100 ⇒ 74 misses on 1-20
The Halfling connects with a dagger through the neck of the remaining creature.
Malus waits for an opening to act (delays).
The creature swings its claws madly at the Halfling that just stabbed it.
On Holman atk: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13 for dmg: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
On Holman atk: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7 for dmg: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
And tries to bite with chitin mandibles at the still entangled Eadie.
On Eadie bite: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22 for dmg: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7 (hits) plus fort vs poison
Rhuul continues to banter and swings at the creature, hitting it solidly with his waraxe, sending a spray of ichor into the surrounding webs.
The creature falls to the ground twitching with its companion on the cave floor.
** End Combat **
Will need a couple saves from Eadie
Eadie Navhelan |
Fort + antitoxin: 1d20 + 8 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 8 + 5 = 24
Fort + antitoxin: 1d20 + 8 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 8 + 5 = 20
Eadie’s passes her CLW wand to Rhuul as she frees herself of the entangling webs.
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
“Thank-you, Mr Irontoe. I’m feeling better all ready!"
“Shall we see if any of the Black Marquis’ men are willing to be cut loose from their premier holiday accommodation? ‘Cos it’s almost time to go home!”
Eadie will stick close to the trap-spotters, lending her assistance where appropriate.
Take 10 Perception: 10 + 11 = 21
Used 3 CLW charges in this game, so far.
GM Aarvid |
Once you deal with the twitching inhabitants of this dreadful place, you are free to explore the green glowing cavern and altar within.
The ettercaps’ nest suspends from the
ceiling. It will require climbing up to reach the nest to search it.
Also, the cocoons hanging behind the altar contain a number of
human bodies suspended in midair.
Holman Nimblefingers |
Holman looks nervously at the nest and bodies suspended from the ceiling. "While I would love to know what all we might find in there, I can tell you right now that I will not be doing the searching."
GM Aarvid |
Nokazi climbs to the ettercaps’ nest and finds within various
shiny objects the monsters collected from their victims:
a few gems, pendants, and gold pieces, and a masterwork
silver short sword.
The cocoons contain a number of human bodies that appear to be
crewmen from the Hanspur’s Luck. Nokazi notices two individuals appear to be barely alive, though unconscious.
Eadie Navhelan |
Eadie sheathes her curved blade and lifts her arms to receive the cocooned bodies as Nokazi lowers them from the ceiling of the loathsome shrine.
“Steady … steady … handsomely now, Mr Stoneclaw! And … gotcha!”
Take 10 Strength: 10 + 3 = 13
After gently placing each body on the ground, Eadie pulls a dagger from her right greave and attempts to carefully cut the pseudo-mummies free. She also helps Holman assess their injuries.
Heal: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20
“My diagnosis is that each of them has a chronic case of arachnophobia.” The young warrior then draws her CLW wand. “Mr Irontoe, please feel free to use my wand to bring them around.”
If Rhuul is away, I’m happy for you to adjudicate the number of charges required, GM Aarvid.
GM Aarvid |
As you carefully lower the two men and revive them, you find they are too weak from poison to do much more than lean against the wall.
"Thank you...whoever you are. We were as good as dead with these ones. Thought we'd never live to see daylight again in this sickly place."
One is an elderly Osirion man who introduces himself
"I am Zukka Nephmet...I uh...thank you again."
The other adds...
"You have my gratitude as well. I am a close friend of the
Black Marquis. Perhaps...you have heard of him if not me. My name is One-Eyed Farl.
Our crew...we were setup by one of the Black Marquis' own captains. Riverbane's her name.
Watch out for that witch if you see her. I'd kill her if I had the strength."
Rhuul Irontoe |
"Ahhah. The plot thickens. Captain Riverbane took us here. We found your ship covered in webs, and the log that indicated you had been ordered to wait there by her. It didn't seem wise to press the point on her at the time..."
He looks from person to person.
"There is an Azlanti ruin to explore here, is there not?"
Rhuul is happy to use the wand, and has a CLW of his own he can contribute to the healing cause.
Rhuul moves the lights around the room and starts to explore, once the crewmembers are made as comfortable as they can be.
"We should keep an eye on our stern me-hearties. Why would Riverbane try to undermine her own lord? Me thinks there be Mutany in the offering."
perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
Eadie Navhelan |
"I am Zukka Nephmet...”
“And I am Eadie Navhelan. How do you do?” She lifts her helm’s visor and curtsies as best you can in full plate. “We’re Pathfinders sent to rescue you at the request of the Black Marquis. In return, our bosses get some boring old book that your Captain obtained through legitimate channels.”
Eadie will try to draw the elderly Osirion alchemist aside for a private conversation. “Mr Nephmet, I am an authorized representative of the Scarab Sages. Identity number 69095-3.”
“We’re currently under new management, after severing ties with the Ruby Prince, Khemet III. Our new big boss is the Diamond Sage. Her fortress of solitude remains in the desert wastes of Osirion. I can’t tell you exactly where … Well I could tell you, but then I’d have to kill you, so I won’t. Anyway if you need any consular assistance – just let me know!”
“Ahhah. The plot thickens ...”
Eadie closes an eye and drawls. “Like week-old fish stew … and it smells just as bad.”
The young warrior draws her blade and moves to guard the party’s six. “Do you think Lady R could have followed us here, letting these spidermen weaken us before trying to finish us off?”
Take 10 Perception: 10 + 11 = 21
Malus Tenebrae |
Watch out for that witch if you see her.
"Not to worry, we stand at the ready to deal with a witch; you are now under the protection of the Pathfinder Society. It appears often the case that they have exchanged defences for their arcane powers, and that will be her undoing."
Rhuul Irontoe |
"Maybe I'm just the suspicious type - but Riverbane looks like a woman with ambition, and while the Black Marquis may have had some in days gone by...he looks kind of comfortable now."
Rhuul tries to keep the conversation away from the two crewmen - more to avoid upsetting them than any real subterfuge.
Nokazi Stoneclaw |
"More plunder, fame and position of power are possible motives for mutiny. Can you both wait here while we continuing exploring the ruin or would you prefer to come with us? The area seems to be safe for the time being."
Nokazi searches for traps while looking for clues.
Perception, T10: 10 + 11 = 21 +2 traps
GM Aarvid |
While no traps are found, no more treasure is uncovered either.
Both men respond that they are too weak to walk far and will hang back until they recover their strength.
"Nay, we cannot do much but get in your way. Lead on and we will do our best to keep up.
Someday, we may be able to repay you for saving us from certain doom."
The altar appears to have been stripped clear as well. It appears to have carvings of a large hairy spider-like creature with a female humanoid head with a mouth full of fangs, commanding dozens of supplicating slaves in horrid sacrifices and battles.
Rhuul Irontoe |
Rhuul tries to work out who the altar may be dedicated to, and looks around for magical auras.
Casts detect magic
"I guess we head back to the ship. Are we in a fit state to meet with Lady Riverbane?"
He ponders for a moment.
"I doubt her crew are in on it, or all of them anyway. This may not be as bad as we think."
GM Aarvid |
Kn:Rel to determine more about the altar, Rhuul. The altar itself does not radiate as magical, except for the continual jade flames glowing on its corners.
You do not find anything else of value on the altar or the rest of the cave, just more webs in the back. The other bodies are very much dead.
Rhuul Irontoe |
Rhuul spends some time looking at the altar from various angles.
"Spider Gods... yuch Could it be Masmezz?"
Takes ten on the knowledge(religion) for 16
Eadie Navhelan |
Feeling that the dreadful cavern is starting to take its toll on her morale, Eadie hums a tune to lift the party's spirits.

“Guys, I agree with Mr Irontoe that it’s time to head back to the Scrag Fisher. We could say the captives were already dead when we assaulted the cave complex, so Lady R doesn’t get suspicious before we confront her.”
Eadie ponders the return trip. “Of course, she could have set an ambush for us in the forest somewhere. Maybe we should keep an eye out for her on the way back?”
Take 10 Perception: 10 + 11 = 21
Holman Nimblefingers |
Holman shrugs, "Regardless of whether she's gonna attack us or not, we need to get back to the boat. Let's go, and just be ready for whatever happens."
With that, he begins making his way out of the cave. However, he keeps to the shadows, in order to get the drop on anyone with ill-will against the adventurers.
Stealth: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (16) + 15 = 31
Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27
Nokazi Stoneclaw |
"Agreed. I'll follow Holman in the shadows and hope to ambush her.
Longbow in hand, Nokazi stealthily moves with Holman back to the boat.
