GenCon has me tied up: apologies for the brevity. Zadim would stay with the group.
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15
DM Elan Morin |
@Kyra: let's assume you have come together although you just spread out searching the cemetery
Kyra and Zadim spot an horse and a well dressed woman behind the mausoleum.

Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
Good afternoon madam. I apologize if we are disturbing you in your grief, but it seems a murder has been committed, and you may be able to help us solve it.
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
DM Elan Morin |
The well dressed woman steps out from behind the mausoleum and approaches you:"My name is Rhiannon Sarvio. I was here, praying at my own family’s tomb. I believe I heard something unpleasant just as you showed up. What's the meaning of this intrusion? Explain yourselves!"
Cwethan's Iconic |
I am Seelah, a knight in service to the Inheritor. Could you describe this unpleasantness?
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
DM Elan Morin |
The woman, you realize she's still quite young, shruggs as Seelah asks her question:"I'm afraind can't. I heard some strange sounds as if someone was dragging something heavy and... some sort of gurgle? Then nothing else. I almost lost concentration but I wasn't finished praying. When I got out of the mausoleum to see what happened I saw you and I thought you caused those strange noises yourselves..." she says.
Blake's Iconic |
"Dying men gurgle," Zadim says to Valeros, "I've stabbed enough of them in the neck to know."
He lowers his hand to the hilt of his blade and says pointedly to the paladin and clearly enough for the stranger to hear, "The problem, Seelah, is that we followed the tracks--man and horse--from the murdered man to this mausoleum."
Cwethan's Iconic |
Seelah's eyes narrow. I see. Do you have any explanation for this?
DM Elan Morin |
"Explanation? You demand an EXPLANATION of ME??!?!? Do you even know who I am, foreigners? I am Lady Rhiannon Sarvio, my family's history goes back thousands of years! We founded Galt! We founded Gralton! And you dare ask questions and doubt MY word? I don't know what happened, I just heard some noise. Or Perhaps I saw a man slaughtered by a pack of tomb raiders, dressed identically to yourselves. The testimony of a Sarvio would outrank your version of events, you know?" Rhiannon says shifting from irate to sweet but somehow menacing in the same tirade...
Intimidate: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Blake's Iconic |
"I am not impressed," Zadim says dryly as he draws his small blade, the edge rasping along the sheath. "Your evasion confirms your guilt in my eyes, but I will defer my judgement to Seelah and Kyra."
Cwethan's Iconic |
Rhiannon. That is not an explanation. Please tell us the truth, you will find us more sympathetic than the guards you attempt to deceive. The word of a templar of Iomedae is not often questioned in matters such as this.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
Seelah concentrates on Rhiannon, hoping not to find the taint of evil on one so young Detect Evil
DM Elan Morin |
"So that's how you want to play this? I guess you really are just a bunch of bloodthirsty tomb robbers!Triumph! Zephyr! To me!" she shouts as she goes for her horse's saddled back.
Seelah's magic detects a deeply black aura surrounding Rhiannon. The sign of a person whose character was corrupted by evil!

"Well, that answers things a little more definitely." She mutters.
She reaches for her holy symbol, and says a prayer to the Dawnflower to bless her companion efforts against the murdering woman.
Casting Bless, which hit all her companions.
Everyone now has a +1 morale bonus on attack rolls!
She then moves closer to the mausoleum, a little concerned about the horse, should its rider get mounted.

Seelah hunkers down behind her shield, fending off Rhiannon's strikes before sliding into a flanking position.
Bravery is a virtue when properly applied. This is mere foolishness.
Longsword: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 5 + 2 = 25
Slashing: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

DM Elan Morin |
Thanks to their well trained battle instincts Kyra, Valeros and Seelah surround the noble girl and make short work of her despite her heavy armor. As Seelah's sword hits her the girl falls bleeding on the ground while her horse runs away.
Stabilize check: 1d20 - 4 ⇒ (9) - 4 = 5
Rhiannon Sarvio keeps bleeding, death quickly approaching.
Out of combat - Rhiannon -5hp
Kyra, Flame of the Dawnflower |
Kyra reaches down and touches the woman gently, saying a small prayer to the Dawnflower, and the bleeding stops.
Using Rebuke Death domain power to restore her 1d4 ⇒ 4 hps
Enough to stop the bleeding, anyway.
She glances up at the others. "I can bring her around, I think... but she does not seem particularly cooperative... so might be better to wait. She'll be fine here for the moment."
She moves the woman so she's resting a little more comfortably.
Cwethan's Iconic |
Nobly done, Kyra. There is wisdom in allowing her a chance to mitigate her crimes should that prove appropriate.
Any thoughts on what else we should do except wait til sunset?
Kyra, Flame of the Dawnflower |
"Perhaps she has something on her that might clarify things?" Kyra offers hopefully, as she searches the woman.
Shrug, one never knows!
She also takes a moment to utter a spell and examine her that way as well.
detect magic
"Perhaps the saddle bags on the horse have information?" She adds thoughtfully. "Can anyone chase it down?"
DM Elan Morin |
Searching the still unconscious but stable Rhiannon Kyra finds a really well forged breastplate, a dagger, a state of the art long sword, the noble's outfit, a signet ring and no less than 253 gp.
Nothing magical
After it's clear the woman has no secret documents or anything else hinting at a nefarious plan Kyra decides to wake her up after taking away her weapons.
Rhiannon's reaction isn't pretty at first as she's enraged by her hawk's death:"Zephyr! You killed Zephyr! That bird was the last of a long line of renowned hunters! He was worth more than all of your lives put together, peasants! Do you relize the magnitude of what you have done???"
Then she realizes her circumstances don't really allow her to threaten the band of heroes, so she changes her tune, slightly:"I see you thugs have taken away my weapons and hold me prisoner. Very well. Kidnap me if you dare. My family will surely ransom me back!"
DM Elan Morin |
"Good! Bring me to the town guard... I'm sure the magistrates will show some leniency for you turning yourselves in... Need I remind you I didn't kill anyone? You did.... and I'll see that you pay for your crimes!!!" Rhiannon spits back at Zadim and Kyra full of anger despite her precarious condition...
She's not going to help you unless you persuade her somehow...
DM Elan Morin |
You have several options here: try to convince her to talk or just tie er up and explore the mausoleum near here. And of course, you can always wait for dusk to arrive.
Cwethan's Iconic |
Seelah isn't too troubled by simply leaving her tied up until they turn her over to the town guard, but since she thinks that the best course of action is to await dusk, she occupies the time by speaking with Rhiannon.
She speaks of choices, and of those who have found their way back from the darkest of places. She speaks of failures, and those who rise above them. She speaks of the chance to right ones wrongs.
