And this is why hallways are the single biggest threat in an encounter. I've run so many scenarios where tactics are useless thanks to positioning. You would think the scenario writers would take such things into consideration, but I guess not all of them think about it ahead of time :(

Surprised by the sudden rush of undead, Balthazar let one of the ghouls pass him, but not before he took a stab at it with his dagger.

"Let's end this quickly, shall we?" Wilhimina says as she moves up to the other side of the doorway (which will provoke from blue if it's still up). She reaches over and touches Balthazar's sword, infusing it with the power to hurt evil. "Now," She says, smiling at Balthazar, "show these ghouls they chose the wrong party to mess with!"
Wilhimina spends a point of fervor to give Balthazar's sword an extra 1d6 damage against evil creatures for 1 minute.

As you go the rest of the way down the hall, you find yourselves in a fifteen-by-fifteen-foot room constructed entirely of the same smooth-white material seen on the sphere outside. A single white pillar stretches floor-to-ceiling in the center of the room, and in a niche rests a smooth, white, hand-sized square covered in glyphs and runes similar to those on the complex’s front door.

![]() |

Wilhimina pokes Balthazar, since he seems the most knowledgeable about such things.
"What's that?" She asks him.

![]() |

Upon clearing the complex, Balthazar sheathed his dagger, choosing a different weapon. His inkpen.
He worked furiously, taking shorthand notes of the layout of the complex and any symbols and text he found, managing to spit out a halting response to Wilhimina's question.
"I have... no... idea... Pre-Earthfall..."
By that point he had sketched the square, and was actively trying to decipher the symbols.

Batlhazar, with some input from his friends, can determine that the device likely controls something.
The spellcraft doesn't tell you what, but you might be able to use your smarts and figure it out.

![]() |

Wilhimina continues to look towards Balthazar as the smartest of the group. "Well?" She asks impatiently.
David spoiled this part for me last year, not remembering that I hadn't played it. I know what it does, so I'm refraining from playing my gnome as usual to give someone else a chance to figure it out...

![]() |

It matches the sphere so I'd guess it does something with that, not that we know what the sphere is or does.
I also think as soon as we touch it we'll be faced with angry golem guardians from the first room...
Marshala leans back from peering at the symbols and the column and stretches her neck stiffly. Looking over at Balth, she offers her conclusions.
"Trouble. Aye, that be what it is. But we done be sailed this far, and no booty fer turning 'round now. Migh as well see what sort o' kraken we release by trying it. What say ye?
If Balth or anyone looks to activate the relic, Marshala will pull her rapier and pop herseld with the shield of faith wand in expectation of trouble.

![]() |

"It appears to be a control interface of some kind..." Balthazar replied to the impatient gnome as he finished his observations hunched over the strange square.
"Trouble. Aye, that be what it is. But we done be sailed this far, and no booty fer turning 'round now. Migh as well see what sort o' kraken we release by trying it. What say ye?
"I concur." He stood up straight and recited. "Learning is not child's play; we cannot learn without pain." Then a wide, exhilarated grin spread across his face, and his eyes brightened with a wild excitement.
”Besides, we’re the first living creatures in nearly ten millennia to enter this room. If nothing else, ‘Killed while attempting to decipher the secrets of Azlanti civilization’ is a fantastic epitaph!”With that, he gingerly plucks the square from its niche.

![]() |

Wilhimina looks at Balthazar. "Now what do we do?" She asks, uncertain where to go from here.

Wilhimina looks around, and in the niche, making sure nothing was overlooked before wandering off and leaving study of the square to Balthazar.
