In desperation, Prisim grabs the wand and pokes Kambraxes with it.
"Holy Light of Healing" she shouts.
UMD: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24

"Oh..it worked!" she looks a little surprised. "I've never had that work before."
She tries again.

"Come on Shelyn, make him pretty again!"
UMD @+3: 1d20 + 9 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 9 + 3 = 23
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
And he should be able to use the wand from here to fix up Afllier.

Why was Kambraxes already damaged before the fall? Or rather, was there a specific reason why he had not healed up after the fight that inflicted the damage? If you did not actively avoid healing, then spend the desired number of wand charges before the fall, and Prisim gets her reroll back.
Characters do not forget that they are hurt, especially a wound that's half your hit points. I'm not going to penalize Kambraxes if Tarondor just missed it.

Xavier will continue to lend his wand as needed to the injured, especially since he feels bad that he barely contributed to the last encounter.

![]() |

At the far end of the room, sickly green light silhouettes a heavy black curtain. In the middle of the chamber, a plain iron box waits.
It's been over 24 hours with no response to the situation in front of the characters. If we reach 48 hours without a player deciding what to do, then the GM decides what would be most "fun".

That's fine. In that case, Prisim can get her reroll back and we can continue. Prisim, thank you for the use of your wand. This being Kambraxes's first adventure, he doesn't have one. Either way, I took 18 points of damage. Prisim's rolls above resulted in 8, meaning I need 10 more. Since Prisim has offered, I gratefully accept:
Wand of cure light wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Wand of cure light wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
"Thank you, Prisim. I appreciate the use of the wand."
"So what is this chest? Seems strange to leave something like that in the middle of the floor. Is it magical?"

![]() |

Prisim carefully approaches the box, checking it for signs of magic.
She keeps a finger to her lips, pointing behind the curtain.
She also keeps her eyes open for any tracks.
perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
Why can't I get those rolls in combat?

![]() |

@Prisim: Where are you standing when you cast detect magic? Please move your icon to the appropriate location.
Prisim does detect magic on the box (see spoilers), and does not detect any traps or tracks. Although the latter is unsurprising, given the stone floor. Sounds of movement and what might be a voice can be heard from behind the curtain. Rayna doesn't see or hear anything of significance.

![]() |

If Prism indicates that there is magic present, Xavier will also cast Detect Magic and scrutinize any auras present.

Prisim will cast from where she is, and then if there is no magic, slowly advance into the room.

"Well it's not like they didn't hear my entrance," mutters Kambraxes, who nonetheless attempts to move forward silently and peer through the curtain.

Prisim creeps forward to join Kam

"ewwww" she whispers.
"That green of the tentacles does so not suit her dress. What was she thinking?"

![]() |

Kambraxes looks down at Prisim with a question on his lips, then thinks better of it and smiles. "Most villains are colorblind. It's a fact. That's why so many dress in black," he whispers back.

![]() |

"Ohhhh!" says the little gnome, as light dawns behind her eyes.
"I can do something about that!"
Guess the plan is that we gather by the curtain and then charge through?

Rayna nods to Prism and starts to sneak as close to the curtain as possible before a party member waves for her to stop, or something else happens.

As Rayna clumsily bumps Kambraxes into the curtain, you hear a voice from beyond, "Please, do step through and say hello."
Kambraxes and Xavier up.

![]() |

Xavier hits himself with his wand of Shield and advances a bit, looking towards one of the more heavily armored party members to "do the honors".

![]() |

His shield emblazoned with Iomedae's upright sword against the backdrop of the Open Road, Kambraxes boldly steps forward. "I am Kambraxes. By the authority of the Blakros Museum and by the power of the Inheritor, I command you to depart in peace."

![]() |

@Prisim: Is it okay if I move the guard to before you, to make the combat easier to track?
Round 1
Effects none
Xavier casts a protective spell over his body, while Kambraxes employs a different sort of protection for his immortal soul. Imrizade casts a spell, then draws a wand.
Prisim is up.

![]() |

Sure
Prisim delays for a moment to get her bearings. That guard's outfit was just not what was required for this type of expedition.
Finally recovered from the moments hesitation at the sight of the fashion catastrophe, Prisim has her little legs work as hard as she can, dashing forward.
Double move

![]() |

@Prisim: Thank you.
Round 1-2
Effects none
The guard looks up at Kambraxes' words and leans forward eagerly. When Prisim runs up a moment later, he steps over and clotheslines the small creature with his giant arm.
Everyone except Prisim is up.

Kambraxes charges the guard. "For Iomedae, Prisim and the Pathfinders!"
Longsword and charge: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 4 + 2 = 211d8 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
AC is 16 to the guard this round.

![]() |

@Kambraxes: The AC Penalty for charging isn't limited to the charged opponent. You might be thinking of untrained combat maneuvers, which are right next to the charging rules in the CRB.
@Afllier: The wall that you started behind obstructs a charge, so you don't have the ability to attack this round. I'll use those rolls for your next attack though.
Round 1-2

Afllier and Kambraxes sprint up to the guard, and the paladin slices deeply into him.
Xavier and Rayna are up.

I'll use a Folio reroll!
Kambraxes Will save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
Momentarily disoriented, Kambraxes gets his shield up in time to block the brunt of the dazzling assault. Seeing his allies fall, he sheds his chivalry like an old cloak and, baring the naked steel of the Inheritor, he lunges forward.
"I am the sword of Iomedae. I am the shield on the wall. And you just hurt my friends."
Smite Evil (+2 attack and AC, +1 damage). Yeah, I know she might not be evil, but Kambraxes doesn't.

@Rayna: Sorry, I just realized that I only gave that information in a spoiler to one player. Here is the description: You see a 15-ft. high, organic looking archway carved from glowing blue-green stone and surrounding a starry, nauseating darkness. Atop it sits some sort of canister. In front of it stands a beautiful woman, with five tentacles growing out of her body and attaching her to the archway. In front of the woman is a decaying man in a guard uniform.
@Kambraxes: Whew, nice reroll! If all three of you had failed that save, we're probably looking at a TPK. Also, your smite does work against her.
BS: 1d4 ⇒ 1
Round 2-3
Effects none
Afllier and Prisim drop in their own puddles of drool, muttering about "pretty lights". Kambraxes' weapons find only air.
Rayna and Xavier are up. Fair warning to all, FIGHT SMART. Those Will fails just made this a much tougher fight.

![]() |

Prisim is 3rd level, so she is not actually unconscious, unless this is a non standard colour spray. Not that it makes a whole heap of difference.

![]() |

Any knowledge checks and/or information about the arch, tentacles, or canister?
Xavier advances with alacrity to close the distance, grimacing as several of his teammates are affected by the color spray, calling out in retort, "Right back at you, lady!"
Color Spray, DC 15

![]() |

@Prisim: Oops, thought you were 2nd-level for some reason.
@Xavier: No, the checks for that information were upstairs. Also, you didn't cast in a legal direction, so I moved you to a space where you could hit Imrizade without also targeting Kambraxes. And good shot! You just saved lives.
BS: 1d4 ⇒ 4
Round 3-4
Effects none
Rayna's arrow flies past Imrizade, but Xavier quickly doses the sorceress with her own medicine.
Rayna, Kambraxes and Xavier are up. We do need to stay in initiative.

![]() |

If she appears to be down, Kambraxes will cautiously approach, sword still in his hand, to examine Imrizade and her tentacles. Can she be separated from them?
"Good Shot, Xavier!" he says. "Can you drag Prisim and Afflier into the hall?"

![]() |

Not knowing how long each side of this fight will take to wake up Rayna wastes no time and advances on the woman drawing her dagger as she does immediately trying to cut at one of the tentacles.
Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
thats just not fair :(

![]() |

Xavier just stares at Kambraxes for a second, then he looks left, right, and finally down at his frail (str 6) form. "My dear boy...you must be joking."
However, he does approach closer, trying to figure out just what this arch, container, and tentacles are.
GM - Is there no other information present about what we see in this room?
If there really isn't, than... If there is nothing that can be ascertained, Xavier will experiment by trying to shoot a magic missile from his wand at one of the tentacles.
1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

![]() |

Attacking a tentacle requires a sunder combat maneuver. But we are more or less (hopefully) out of combat. We can say that it takes Kambraxes and Rayna six actions (three rounds) to sever all five tentacles.
Xavier takes a moment to look around the room, but finds nothing new. The gate continues to pulsate with green light, and the starry darkness beyond still twinkles and shifts around in a nauseating way. The cylinder atop the arch just sits there.

![]() |

After severing the tentacles, Kambraxes lays Prisim atop Afflier and pulls the big warrior and little sorceress out of the room in case something bad ensues. Just in case, he makes sure that Afflier's weapon is close to Afflier's hand. He's clueless about any implements that Prisim might need.
He then returns to the chamber and examines the cylinder. "She was attached to this archway. And I think that is some sort of control...box...thing."
He tries to topple the cylinder off the archway. If it's on there securely, he examines it closer to see whether he thinks he could destroy it. If so, he warns everyone to stand far back, then does so.
"I'm willing to bet this is some sort gateway. In the stories, collapsing them is always dangerous. No need for everyone to be at risk."

![]() |

Xavier assesses the situation after Rayna and Kambraxes sever the tentacles from the woman, then the latter drags their allies out of harms' way.
"Rayna, I might not be strong enough to drag people, but I might be quick enough to catch something falling. Could you mayhaps shoot that cylindrical object off the archway with an arrow?"
If she seems willing, Xavier will position himself to catch said cylinder if shot as such.

Prisim tries a jet of acid on the tentacles (assuming they are still connected).
