Why wouldn't he get the bonus AC on the first round? Hes actively doing it before combat starts...

Second round, he would be attacking, the total defence was just to not get caught off guard.

Reeling under the statues swift opening, his ears ringing with the swords impact against his shield, Hugo felt that familiar spark of anger in his gut. The feeling swelled in his chest until it poured out of him in a howl and a vicious swing of his mace.

Heavy Mace Power Attack: 1d20 + 9 - 1 ⇒ (6) + 9 - 1 = 14

Heavy Mace Damage: 1d8 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 5 + 2 = 9

Rage for +4 Str, then attack. Gonna add attacks for the next few rounds, since we will likely just be trading blows?

Round 3

Eeep! Why'd you keep rolling? Give a new post a chance to have mercy on you!
Sorry I've been MIA! The flood of work will lift now and I can get back to my daily posting. Right now I'm still running on fumes, haven't slept in something like 40 hours and my pillow is calling. Don't die, Hugo!

Hugo, that's the way I read total defense. And the statue had first initiative. +(

Round 3
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6 vs Hugo's 18 AC (-2 for Rage)

Round 4
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21 vs Hugo's 18 AC (-2 for Rage)
Non-Lethal Damage: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (2, 1) + 3 = 6

Hugo rages against the statue, pounding it with all of his strength, but each attack is turned by its sword or its surprising swiftness. The statue circles Hugo warily, striking a few times but meeting only armor or shield, until one sword thrust catches Hugo squarely in the gut, causing 6 points of non-lethal damage.

Round 5
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6 vs Hugo's 18 AC 20-2 for Rage

Male Human Barbarian 2 (Urban), Fighter 2

Hugos Rage only gives +4 to either Str, Dex or Con, dividable in +2 increments, like +2 Str and +2 Dex fx. Nothing else, no +2 Will, no -2 AC :)

Round 5

"Aaarrghh!, stand still so I can 'it ya!!" Hugo roared, his anger practically a visible aura of heat around him. "Eat dis ya stupid stone!"

Heavy Mace Power Attack: 1d20 + 9 - 1 ⇒ (7) + 9 - 1 = 15

Heavy Mace Damage: 1d8 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 6 + 2 = 10 Forgot to add +1 from weapon last time.

Round 6

Heavy Mace Power Attack: 1d20 + 9 - 1 ⇒ (19) + 9 - 1 = 27

Heavy Mace Damage: 1d8 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 6 + 2 = 11

Damn archetypes and not having all of the rules in one place!!! OK - it still hit you at AC 20, so its Statue 1, Hugo 0 =)

Round 5
Hugo is still unable to land a solid blow on the statue - the good news is it has only managed to get one hit in on him.

Round 6
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
Hugo continues to keep the attacks at bay, and his rage finally gets a hit in on the statue, although it seems to less damage than one might expect. Perhaps because of the black stone from which it is created...

Statue: -6
Hugo: -6

Round 7
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
You are putting on quite a show for your friends, Hugo! I hope they are duly impressed with your martial prowess ;-)

Zinny opens her mouth to gasp when the statue comes to life-- and that's all she can do. Strange magic locks her in place. All she can do is watch as Hugo struggles ferociously for what (she thinks) is his very life.

I shouldn't-a been a coward! Now he's gotta face it all alone!

Heavy Mace Power Attack: 1d20 + 9 - 1 ⇒ (16) + 9 - 1 = 24

Heavy Mace Damage: 1d8 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 6 + 2 = 13

After a solid minute of fighting, his fury suddenly left him, a pained look of fatigue on his face. Gritting his teeth, he shook it off, continuing to fight.

Out of Rage. Ignoring Fatigue using Heart of the Fields.

And ofc, both times I roll a 1, the damage dice rolls an 8

The dice, they doth mock us...

Round 11
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16

So the score after a solid minute of sparring is:

Hugo: -19

Round 13

The statue does not do crit damage (so you've got that going for you! But Hugo's at -29 halfway through Round 13...unlucky number! Let's see how your rolls go! In case you haven't figured it out, the statue is AC 20 and has DR 5/-.

"Hugo!" Zinny cries as soon as the magic fades. She rushes over to the big man, worriedly looking over his many bruises and wringing her hands.

"Oh no, oh no--"

He's breathing, at least, and her shoulders sag with relief. "He's alive, everyone, but he's awful beat up! We've got some'a them magic potions, don't we?"

Now that she knows he's going to live, at least, Zinny wipes her nose with her fist (classy girl) and finds the worry turning to anger. She turns around and glares at the uncaring statue.

"You-- you big bully! You oughtta pick on someone your own size!!!"

(Zinny, dear, Hugo was the closest thing to the statue's size you guys have.)

She gets to her feet, grabs the darkwood club with both hands, and starts stomping towards the statue.

sorry, folks - long day at a wrestling tourney with my monster 170lb son, who won 6 of his 7 matches last night and today =)

The door you entered through unlocks, but the other two doors will not open despite any efforts you may make. The statue is completely impervious to any additional hits, spells, or attempts to inflict damage upon it. Hugo comes to under the careful ministrations of Jacob, sore and bruised an ugly shade of blackish-purple, but not seriously injured despite the beating he took.

Hugo:
Once the stars and little birdies stop floating around your head and you can finally see only one of everybody, you think back on the combat and realize it was more like an intense sparring match with a master instructor than a fight to the death. The way the statue moved, attacked and defended were far more advanced than what you have been able to learn on your own...perhaps you could even incorporate some of those combinations into your own repertoire...

Grizelda draws the black magical key from her pouch, "Looks as if it may, Zinnia. Shall we give it a try?" If there is no clear order for opening them, like numbers on the doors, she'll start with the one closest.

Grizelda uses the key on the door - when she puts it in the small keyhole the door shimmers quickly with a yellowish light, then opens smoothly. The door looks to weigh over one hundred pounds, but swings easily. Inside you find a 15' by 15' personal library. It is well appointed, with a fireplace along the western wall, a table and two chairs before it, and shelves of books and scrolls from floor to the 10’ ceilings! There are leather bound, wood bound, even leaf bound books, stacks of papers, maps, official-looking documents, and more. On the table are a pair of common-looking spectacles.

Perception (DC 13):
While looking at the books on a shelf along the east wall, you notice one of the books looks a bit different from the others around it. When you try to pull it out, it just tilts in place, and the entire bookshelf suddenly swings toward you away from the wall. Behind it you find a hidden room with a small but comfortable-looking bed in the far corner and a small wooden table with 2 crystal goblets and a large crystal bottle of light brown liquid – some type of liquor by the looks and smell of it. Tomid takes one sniff and immediately identifies it as an exceptionally fine brandy…Further exploration of the area reveals two more sealed bottles of the liquor, with the three honeybee crest of an ancient and well-known distillery. These bottles are worth a small fortune!
