About Jacob Grimm
"You there, hands off the books until you've washed at the basin! No exceptions!" Grumbling to himself, Jacob mutters a divine prayer and refills the tub with fresh water. Blasted miscreants, if they chatter over the books this time I'll cast silence on them for sure! Glaring at the children, but softening as they rush to the books with enthusiasm and clean hands, he lets a grin creep into his features for moment. Bah, they're just children, I was the same once, put my grubby hands on every myth and fairy tale I could find. "Right, right, on my way!" the winking of lights indicates another circuit about the shoppe to illuminate the globes, the always practical book-seller only using magic to light up his shoppe, shunning open flames among the shelves of valuable knowledge and fantastical stories. At this pace I'll never get to mending those books, such a shame too, one never knows when the 'Dissertations of Animated Puppets' will be in demand. Pleased to have customers in his little shoppe, and comforted by the patter of rain outside, Jacob settled back behind the counter to tend to the damaged tomes. But as he often did, his mind drifted to days gone by as his fingers absently rubbed the worn leather cover of his favorite adventure book.
Temple life wasn't his choosing, but in the lands of Mendev the World Wound dominated everything and his father had insisted on Jacob's pursuit of a worthwhile profession, hoping his son would lead future warriors against the demons. He enrolled his son in a clergy program at the Temple of Iomedae at a young age, but it quickly became apparent that young Jacob lacked the strength of arm, or fortitude, or even the basic dexterity for the rigors of war. The priests diverted him to tasks more suitable to the young boy and the ensuing days were lonely and boring, his only companionship coming in the form of yellowed pages of great adventures had by people not trapped behind stone walls and vows. The priests of Iomedae knew the boy didn't fit their kind, but they supported his studies and encouraged his learning. As the years passed it became clear that knowledge was his calling, not the path of leadership, and his appreciation for Andoletta found understanding if not acceptance among the priests. They allowed him to finish his young training, then with kind words and a gentle push he was dismissed from the program. His father wept, but Jacob rejoiced, and with a small stipend he was encouraged to seek his future elsewhere, away from the lands of Mendev. Numeria was too hostile, too chaotic for the young Jacob, but south of that he found solace in Daggermark and applied his skills to mending books and trading in tomes. In time he purchased a little shoppe and it grew with his experience, provided a happy, comfortable home for the outcast cleric. But he never forgot the adventures he read, even continued to read, and a part of him always longed to be the great hero of the stories, the same great heroes that the priests of Iomedae had hoped to create, the hero that his father had always hoped he would be.
