Game Master WhtKnt

A tour of some of the most popular AD&D 1E adventures, with a few surprises thrown in.

This will be an old-school game using the OSRIC rules that are available for free from http://www.knights-n-knaves.com/osric/. For those not familiar with OSRIC, if you've played AD&D 1E, you've played OSRIC, as the rules are very nearly identical (the notable exception is that OSRIC has no monks).

Character Generation

  • Abilities are Strength, Intelligence, Wisdom, Dexterity, Constitution, and Charisma
  • Roll 4d6 and drop the lowest for each stat, assign as desired
  • You must meet the minimum/maximum racial requirements to play a particular race (e.g., halflings cannot have a Strength above 17)
  • Hit points and wealth are rolled randomly
  • Pay attention to the class/race limitations (e.g., paladins may only be human)
  • Multi-class characters are permitted

All submissions should include a background for your character. Extensive works are not necessary. It is sufficient to put a few sentences describing your recent activities.

We will be playing through some of the classic AD&D Greyhawk adventures, along with a few others that I shoehorn in. The first adventure takes us to Orlane, where the adventurers will face the Cult of the Reptile God! The year is c. 576 CY. Note that what comes after this date is not set. The future of our Greyhawk may not be the future of the actual Greyhawk.

Recruitment will end on Wednesday, April 6 at 11:59 PM CT.

One last thing; if anyone manages to get the perfect stats for a monk and REALLY wants to play one, I might be persuaded to permit it on a case-by-case basis.

Wow. So that is 4, 9, 17, 12, 10, 14.

Hmmph. No sixteens or above. There goes my xp bonus.

Looking at a magic-user.
Hit points 1d4 ⇒ 4
Gold 2d4 ⇒ (4, 4) = 8 80 gp starting.

Spells at first level:
(Automatic) Read Magic.
(Selected) Sleep.
1d30 ⇒ 18 Magic Missile.
1d30 ⇒ 3 Charm Person.

Looking at making a Dwarf Cleric

Hit Points:1d8 ⇒ 5
Gold:3d6 ⇒ (2, 2, 4) = 8x10=80 gp starting
Starting Age:250 +2d20 ⇒ (6, 19) = 25=275

Alright here is my submission for a dwarven cleric. Please take a look at my alias and let me know if I am missing any critical information or if I messed anything up.

4d6 - 3 ⇒ (3, 5, 4, 5) - 3 = 14
4d6 - 1 ⇒ (1, 2, 4, 2) - 1 = 8
4d6 - 4 ⇒ (6, 6, 4, 4) - 4 = 16
4d6 - 1 ⇒ (6, 1, 5, 4) - 1 = 15
4d6 - 2 ⇒ (3, 2, 2, 2) - 2 = 7
4d6 - 3 ⇒ (5, 4, 4, 3) - 3 = 13

Wow, interesting stats - let me think about that. The last OSRIC game I played in I rolled much better (see alias)

First for human Paladin!

1st: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 1, 5) = 17
16
2nd: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 5, 6) = 21

3rd: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 3, 3) = 13
12
4th: 4d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 4, 1) = 12
11
5th: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 2, 6) = 20
18
6th: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 2, 2) = 13
12

Holy. Flying. Crap. Let me regale in my luck, I will come back later.

Going with a Half-Orc Fighter.

Hit Points: 1d10 ⇒ 9

Starting Money: 3d6 + 2 ⇒ (4, 2, 3) + 2 = 11 = 110

Are we using weapon specialization optional rules? Fine either way, just wondering.

The Exchange

Good question Haldin - I was just about to ask the same.

Also Whtknt how to you handle armour for multiclassing elves? There is an optional rule which nerfs Ftr/MUs so that they cannot cast and wear armour. The reason I'm interested is that I'd like to build some kind of precursor to a bladesinger.

Cheers

Dark Archive

Yes, we will be using Weapon Spec.

Dark Archive

@French Wolf: I will not be using that particular rule. The less restrictive of any two class requirements apply to multi-classed elven characters, except that thieving abilities can only be used while wearing armor permitted to thieves.

The Exchange

Thanks DM WhtKnt. I'll work on something this evening should be up by tomorrow am.

1d10 + 1d4 ⇒ (8) + (3) = 11

11/2 = 5.5 rounded up to 6 hits.

Wealth: 3d6 + 2 ⇒ (6, 3, 6) + 2 = 17 = 170gp.

EDIT:

Random rolls for 2 spells: 2d30 ⇒ (7, 29) = 36

enlarge and ventriloquism.

Dark Archive

1: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 4, 1) = 10
2: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 2, 1, 3) = 8
3: 4d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 3, 1) = 12
4: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 4, 3) = 15
5: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 1, 1) = 13
6: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 1, 6) = 12

So:
9
7
11
13
12
11

That's like old school 3d6 rolls right there. I like a challenge...

So that's most of the crunch done tonight. I'll mull over background and have a shufty at Canonfire to create a suitable background. Probably a high elf from the Dim Forest not far from Orlane.

Cheers

Dotting and will brush up on the system, has been years since I've played ADND or any thing close should be fun.

#54d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 6, 2) = 11 = 10
#64d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 2, 5) = 18 = 17

Hey this is Emissary back to roll wealth and health, and I'm completely decided to go for a Paladin. I'll finish its sheet and add backstory soon.

Wealth: 3d6 + 2 ⇒ (4, 5, 4) + 2 = 15 x10 = 150 gp.
Health: 1d10 ⇒ 8 8 hp, great!

4d6: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 1, 3) = 11 = 10
4d6: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 5, 6) = 20 = 16
4d6: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 1, 6) = 10 = 9
4d6: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 4, 6) = 21 = 17
4d6: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 2, 2) = 12 = 10
4d6: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 2, 1) = 10 = 9

Okay, so far we have:

Interested Parties (enough to roll stats, anyway)
Logan1138
DM Yodler
Jim Cirillo
Sir Galavaine of Verbobonc
AGamer70
TwelvePointFivePercent
Spazmodeus

Partially Done
Unnamed (Haldhin) - Half-orc Fighter
Unnamed (EmissaryOfTheNorth) - Human Paladin

Completed Characters
Opalia Ceylinian (French Wolf) - Elf Fighter/Magic-user
Sonya (Michael Raaf) - Dwarf Cleric

Dark Archive

Ultimately, I think that I will choose six characters to form the party, and the rest of you will be placed on standby in case someone drops out. If we do have a drop-out, you will be given first opportunity to fill the gap.

Opalia is pretty much done DM WhtKnt. If you want more of a background then let me know, I'm sure I can add to it.

By the way, you can take off Sir Galavaine of Verbobonc from your list, he was an example to show that I've played OSRIC before on these boards. He ventured into the Moathouse near Hommlet in fact.

Silver Crusade RPG Superstar 2013 Top 8

My options were limited by my rolls so Human Thief was the choice. Probably hailing from a town close by to Orlane like Guilder's Folly or Stonebridge. Should have much of character done by end of day.

Age: 1d4 + 20 ⇒ (4) + 20 = 24
Money: 2d6 ⇒ (6, 1) = 7 x 10= 70GP
HP: 1d6 ⇒ 4

I'll bite. Let's see what happens.

4d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 2, 3) = 12=11
4d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 1, 4) = 12=11
4d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 2, 5) = 15=13

4d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 6, 1) = 13=12
4d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 6, 6) = 20=18

Huh, one focus with a ok spread. Gonna download the book and pick a class.

Are there psionics, cause I'll straight pick a magic-user for the chance.

Dark Archive

1 person marked this as a favorite.

No psionics. Never much cared for them.

Psst - Boss Zog (5+6+6)=17.

awwww just saw that. No more late night rolls.

For simplicity's sake, lets make a human fighter.

age: 15 + 1d4 ⇒ 15 + (1) = 16

He's young and ready to make something of himself.

health: 1d10 ⇒ 6

He's strong but only a little healthier than the mage apprentices he sees around the tower. Those guys even get to eat more than him.

Money: 3d6 + 2 ⇒ (2, 2, 4) + 2 = 10x10 = 100gold

But that meager living turned into quite the savings. He can finally afford a blade and armor, and can actually do something with his life. No more carpentry for this lad.

The Exchange

Rolling for hits is a dangerous thing. I once got a mage with 1 hit point that way. He couldn't jump over a log safely.

Good to have some muscle along.

Cheers

Here is Boss Zog, bringing you the muscle.

Infos in the Alias page. Click on the name and check it out.

@French Wolf: The danger is all just part of the allure. Wouldn't be fun without the chance of death.

The Exchange

Indeed. Couldn't agree more.

Dark Archive

My father once had a character with 1 hp. Died in the moathouse after bieng bitten by a giant rat!

Boss Zog,

It may be helpful to add another spoiler to your alias to document and track HP, AC, EXP, and Class.

I have found that adding it to the "classes/levels" as a solid string is beneficial as it then displays underneath your name on each post in the gameplay tab.

For your copy and paste pleasure you can steal my string of info:

NG Cleric | Lvl 1 | EXP 0 | HP 5/5 | AC -2 | STR Test, Minor 1-2, Major 4 | CON Test, Minor 92, Major 88

These few bits of info are usually nice to have handy in the forums to have at the ready. But this is just one method and may not work for everyone or every campaign.

Looks like we have a few fighters and thieves, so lets try a cleric. Can't have enough healing in these games.

HP: 1d8 ⇒ 7
Gold: 3d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 3) = 12 x 10 = 120

Work in progress

Cedric

@ Michael Raaf: Popped the info right in there for ya.

Just added languages, going to go look for where the base encumbrance is

H&W: 1d100 ⇒ 82 = Tall

Height: 1d4 ⇒ 2 = 6'3"

Weight: 185 + 1d20 ⇒ 185 + (16) = 201 lbs

Edit: Found it. It's 150 Average + STR modifier. When calculating movement subtract str mod from encumbrance weight in relation to movement. Hope that's helpful.

Grand Lodge

Here layeth Albert Maxxon, Emissary's submision.

Only thing left to do is choosing assorted stuff (What he carries in the backpack) the rest is ready for a checking!

I may not finish my character in time for this. My only true experience with AD&D is through Baldur's Gate. However from what i've seen I really like it and I've heard a lot of stories about it from my father who played it back when he was in highschool.

I'm going to try and have a human magic user drawn up soon. Would it be okay if I waited to do my equipment until after the players are picked?
