Tobar Pannell |
Sure, he can be an auxiliary. Sort of like the roman legion squads had 8 fighting men and 2 odd-jobs men.
I like the background. You can take the bonus.
Excellent - have taken Spellsong to round out the out of combat options. Just be careful if Tobar pulls you aside for a quiet chat...
I'm assuming that Spellsong will only work with Bard spells? - or would you be generous enough to allow me to use it with Sorcerer spells as well?

@Deiros & Shanosuke
For the role of Sergeant I'm looking a character who is tough&gruff. That needs to be a person who can put the fear of gods into men like Ol' Stony there, or scoundrel such as Tobar. At the same time, he needs to have enough acumen to lead the squad in the absence of the officers.
I would prefer a Fighter combined with non-spellcasting class for this role, but whatever you come up with that fulfills this guidelines is more
than fine.
Well how about this background then:
Rickard Forcae was raised by his father, Alix Forcae, the overseer of weapons and equipment at the Aldori School in Brevoy. His mother, Margryt died in childbirth to her only son.
In his youth, Rickard assisted his father with his duties at the School and, to his utmost excitement, was accepted to the school at age 9, the youngest student ever to be accepted for training. He quickly advanced through the ranks, becoming an Aldori Duelist apprentice.
After that, his progress quickly stalled because of his constant quarrels with his instructors and increasingly frequent rebellions against the school’s policies. Without fail, Aldori Duelists fight with aldori swords. However, minimal training is provided for other kinds of swords should the he ever find himself without his aldori blade; and train to fight against opponents using all kinds of weapons as well. But Ricakrd would constantly argue that a Aldori School should not limit himself to just aldori weapons. He much preferred blending the strengths of the fighting style of Aldori Dueling with weapons that could inflict much greater damage. He often accused his instructors and the school of following custom for custom’s sake.
As his focus on his training faded, his interest in other activities grew. He often broke curfew sneaking out of the school and into the city visiting the taverns. His licentiousness grew until he would say or do anything to satisfy the raging hormones that filled him. Within a year of attaining the coveted rank of Aldori Duelist finally by the unprecedented age of 18, Rickard Forcae quit the school without warning to seek his fortune across the Sea.
During Ricakrd’s dissidence, the School hired a new instructor for apprentices. The new instructor, Rosoy Risle, was entering his 40s and, at his age, had no real chance of ever achieving a Master level. He moved his family to the school and within 6 months it was clear that his daughter, Nymeria, was pregnant. Questions were asked and Ricakrd was implicated. In light of all his other recent infractions, some kind of punishment had to be brought against Rickard. Rosoy was furious; he wanted to kill Rickard, but since both were members of the school, it was kind of against the rules to kill him.
A trial ensued. The day before the verdict was to be delivered, Ricakrd’s frustration with the rigidity of tradition snapped and he told his father he intended to quit the School, regardless of the decision. He wanted to live in a world where men could make their own rules instead of blindly doing what their instructors instructed. Fighting is an art, a creation; and one cannot create if one is bound by the rules of their fighting style. When his father heard that Rickard intended to quit, he cried.
“Rosoy Risle will try to kill you the moment you are no longer a student of the school.”
“I do not fear Risle,” replied Rickard.
“I understand,” said his father, “but only one of you can survive the fight. If you live, who will care for Nymeria?”
“Her mother.”
Rickard looked sadly at his brash, young son, “And for Nymeria’s child?”
“Anyone.”
Seeing, then, that his son was not compelled by matters of the heart, Rickard changed tactics. He talked with his son throughout the day and learned that what his son really craved was fame. Rickard believed he could become the greatest fighter ever, but not if he was limited in his education. He did not want to master some other fighting style, but to create his own – one that was superior to all others. And, as the father of such a style, he would attain the fame he craved, and the fame that came with it.
In learning this, his father was able to convince him that he could better achieve these goals in Korvosa rather than Brevoy. “Your mother came from a powerful house of nobles in Korvosa.”
“Korvosa is a land of foolish rules.”
“True, but those regulations have made some of the finest warriors that use other styles, and foolish women are easier to seduce if they don’t know you.”
Ricakrd smiled.
His father continued, “If, tomorrow, you quit the school after the trial, you will be forced to fight Rosoy. That can only end badly: you would either be dead or outside the school walls with blood on your hands in a city that views you in disgrace.”
Ricakrd stopped smiling.
“However,” said his father, “if you take a ship tonight to Korvosa, to the lands of your mother’s inheritance, there need be no fight, no disgrace and no infamy.”
“But how will they know me there?”
“I have something.” Rickard went into his room and returned with an old wooden chest, which he opened. From it, he withdrew an old, signet ring. “These was your mother’s. She said all the members of her royal house used this ring, with the likeness of the current nobility imprinted. Look here’s your mother’s words.” He held up the Lady of Blades”.
“What funny looking rings,” said Rickard.
And so it was that Ricakrd forcae, nearly 19, was convinced by his father to sneak out of the school the night before the trial. He left with his “inheritance” Some money, an Aldori sword from his father and a Chain Shirt from the armory. Leaving Brevoy, Rickard took a boat to Old Korvosa and travelled from there into the city of Korvosa in search of his inheritance. There he learned the truth of his mother’s exaggerations to his father. Despite the blow to his aspirations of fame, Ricakrd learned the value of arriving at a smaller house than anticipated; he was immediately recognized as a skilled fighter in the land with brevoy blood in his veins. Upon providing his mother’s ring to prove his heritage, despite the low status derived from his father’s blood, he was immediately appointed into the Korvosa Guard.
Rickard had been serving in this position for roughly 2 years, gaining some fame within the city for his quick wits and fame. In reality he was frustrated a lowly guard even when elevated to sergeant in the Korvosa Guard, that was not enough for him and he started to become pragmatic, thinking his dreams were something foolish and thinking that his father had the right of it, if he were to see his father know he would take him for a stranger, for now he was more somber and direct in his approach. Shortly after his elevated status in the guard he headed to participate in a competition held by the Sable Company to enter they ranks. There he took 2nd in Log Rolling, won a marathon, and was declared 1 of 4 winners in the Grand Melee. Returning to his house to heal his injuries, he narrowly escaped being killed by the infamous bandit White Fawn a member of the Cerulean Society and was forced to defend himself, barely keeping the infamous bandit at bay, until other guards noticed the scene and came to his aid.
The Sable Swords had already taken interest in Rickard skill and particular way of fighting and after hearing of his encounter and that he was able to hold his ground they invited him to join them into a new program they had designed for special assignments.

Desriden |

Hey, hey,
I'll go ahead and start working on the alchemist/sorcerer crunch. But if I'm going to be a primary caster for the whole, I might have to change the classes again. The alchemist's "spells" only affect him until I buy a class trait that lets me hand a potion to someone else to use. And sorcerer's only get so many spell at first level. That means I won't be able to really buff and support the group as much as the role would normally require.
I'll work it up and a more versatile build (probably Evoker Wizard/Witch) that would give the party as much support as possible. His spellbook can be pictograms with Necromancy and Enchantment as opposed school since the Witch class has many of the good enchantment spells in its list.
If you have a preference or suggestions on the build, let me know.

Intimidate +7 and Jail has no qualms about being mean. He's a tough one too. You come within reach, which is about 10 feet hehe, and he will strike. He's a no nonsense kind of guy. He absolutely hates monologues. I also wanted to give him intimidating prowess, and dazzling display. Also if the game continues, I plan on working towards the Combat patrol feat.
With a high initiative and combat reflexes, he will be able to take on foes as they come. With intimidating prowess, and dazzling display, he will be quite a scary fellow to be sure. He is a good leader. Made it to sergeant before he quit the army and started working for mercs. He will have little trouble in being boss when boss isn't around. The ranger part is about being a skirmisher and moving across battlefield while providing skills that normal fighters don't have. I'm not really concerned about a rangers spell abilities, I'm more interested in the combination of two combat classes such as those. The more I work on this guy, The more I like him. Ranger will allow me to gain additional bonus feats for my weapon of choice as well which I think is cool. He'll be good in combat, and with skills. That is my goal. If I need to rewrite my backstory to be more convincing then I will.

OK, here are the basics of the Alchemist/ Fire Elemental Sorcerer. He's actually a lot better than I expected. Lemme know what you think.
I love it! The background is the same as before, right? You can take bonus feat or two traits. Also, since the goblins are a bit weaker than standard races, you can also take two goblin-specific traits from We Be Goblins.
Oh, I am modifying Sorcerers a bit. I'm going to post a link here later today.

Yeah, same background for Silrack. I'll go look up some traits and put them up later. Thanks!

@Deiros & Shanosuke
I have decided on Rickard for the role of Sergeant, but with some modifications to the character concept. I love the idea of Shield Fighter - it evokes the image of Roman Centurion and I would love to go with that. On the other hand, I want to have a down to earth Sergeant for this squad - and that means that any spellcasting or mystical class is essentially not available for this concept. Since that doesn't leave you many options, in Rickard's case I'll allow 3PP classes or even 3.5. I'd suggest that you take a look at Armiger by SGG. I am even ready to take some prestige class and inflate it to base class, if you can think of a class that would suit you.
Shanosuke,
Your character was very well thought out, and the only reason why I chose Rickard is that he resonates with the stereotypical image of Roman Centurion, hiding behind his shield and killing with the quick trusts of his sword. If you are interested, I'll move your character into application slot for the Scout or Grunt 2, or you can even try for another concept if you like.

Akkori |

Here is Akkori, soon to be scout. (Gunslinger/Scout & Sniper Rogue)
In the aftermath of the Starfall, the horse lords of Nidal called out for aid and a newly freed Zon-Kuthon answered their pleas. For centuries, he kept them alive in return for their pledge of eternal worship. When the light finally did return, the Dark Lord kept many of his adherents in the darkness of the Plane of Shadow. These humans were some of his most devout worshippers. They worked his will over the millenia that followed both on the Shadow Plane and, through their more powerful members, on the Material Plane; mostly in their former home land of Nidal.
Even though those ancient horse lords had pledged the lives and souls of the Nidalese people and their descedents for all eternity, some amongst them were insincere. While the majority of those kept behind in the shadows were the most ardent of servants, Zon-Kuthon also made sure to keep those who had falsely promised themselves to his worship. These were inexorably bred to true members of the faith over the centuries to eradicate them, but there always seemed to be those of each generation that taught the old ways.
One of those born to the secret cult was Akkori. He was raised to give lip service to the Lord of Torture, but secretly worshipped the powers of change and rebellion. For years, he was trained to become yet another silent assassin, working the will of his people's patron. The skills came naturally to him and he excelled at bringing down his prey.
His training was even extended to a powerful new innovation from the lands beyond divinity. That place where human and dwarf worked together without the aid of magic or faith. He took to the new invention with gusto and quickly became one with his pistol.
The time had come to prove his mettle. He was sent to the Material plane, into Nidal, and given over as a servitor to the forces of the triumverate. For several months he plied his trade until an opportunity arrived for him make good his escape. He was sent to infiltrate Korvosa as an applicant to their Sable Company.
He joined the Korvosan army and made his way into the Sable Company. Before he could find a way to reveal himself to his commanding officer and truly convert to Korvosa's side, the company was subjected to experiments. All at once, he felt the familiar tug of a plane shift and then next thing he knew, he was standing in the ruins of the company's barracks with the other survivors of the dimensional translocation.
He could no longer feel the icy steel grip on his heart that he knew to be Zon-Kuthon. He rejoiced that he was finally free. He could truly serve with his friends and squadmates. His soul might be tainted, but it would be free.

Okay, just cause I didn't get the position I wanted, doesn't mean I'm just going to give up. I'll shoot for Scout. It might work better with the Ranger/Fighter concept. If I must, I will take Grunt 2.

Even if Jail is a Grunt, he could have been drummed down from sergeant? Would create some internal tension that might be interesting - not necessarily negative but he'd find old habits of being a sarge die hard?
Yeah! I like that, internal rivalry but not enmity just 2 guys that are used to being on the same job, but one of us can always have a corporal under the sergeant and above grunt.

Interesting idea to be sure. I'd definitely be willing to play at that should the Scout position be filled. I will wait and see what the mighty GM has to say on the matter.

Brandon "Bonesaw" Bismarc
3/4 of the way through making the character, and I think I've finally got an idea for background.
Briefly it involves being an acolyte at the temple of Pharasma, and having some ideas which might not fit those of the church canon. Maybe there were ways to heal and diagnose things without calling directly on divine power. Several events leading up to him being expelled from the temple, the burning down of a section of the library, (Not to mention the prior's personal bedchambers).
A good place to end up when you're views weren't "traditional" might be a mercenary company, where results were appreciated more than methods. I will of course type up in more detail as time permits.

Beinn-Árd-Càrnborn |

Beinn completed - have chosen additional traits [think they compliment his history - something I love about traits] and against my better judgement have opted for Power Attack [simply to open up some cooler feats down the line]
Characters are shaping up, seem to be a great bunch... can't wait to see em in action!
Holding off on the equipment until we get a go ahead to shop :)

Tenobia Covalestra |

@ Zeltirina:
Really is an amazing story, very cool. With the dynamic fighting style I envision for Tenobia, Zeltirina will definitely be a reminder not to take her body for granted.
@Akkori:
That revalation should be a pretty intense moment.
@ Scranford
Heh, Bones. So many Star Trek references.Sounds like fun.

I'm gonna update party list tomorrow and, hopefully, complete party roster. Right now, I'm chatting with High Duke about his character, so I hope that we'll have the Commander by tomorrow as well. After that, I'll review the characters and we'll begin the game on Monday at the latest.
I just want to say that all of you created great characters and that I hope that the story will be interesting and enjoyable to you.

Akkori |

Very nice background.
By the way, I've posted the stats for War Knife, designed along the lines of bowie knife, as an exotic weapon. They should be on the previous page.
I did see it. I was waiting to see if the background was good enough for a bonus feat before swapping out my current feat for it. I'll wait to see if I make the cut.

In the next few days we should finish the characters. I hope to review all of them by Monday and start the Game Thread.
Those who weren't accepted are invited to finish their characters as well. They have an option to be potential replacement players in the case that someone drops out - or they can form a Reserve Squad - essentially a bunch of guys who were sucked in the vortex at the same time as the First Squad, but ended elsewhere. I can introduce you to the game one by one, or I may even start another game with you as primary PCs, but that is for some later time. Not until the First Squad reaches at least 2nd level.
Thank you all for applying. Your efforts are more than appreciated. Please continue to follow the game and I will try to find a way to include all of those who are interested.

Just waiting to see what starting gold is and if there'es any other kit included before finalizing equipment.

![]() |

Okay, starting gold is max. You use the better starting gold of your two classes, as per gestalt rules.
Each of you begin the game with the following:
Leather or Studded Leather
One primary weapon (sword, club, pistol, whatever) with fifty rounds of ammunition in the case of ranged weapons (bolts, arrows, powder...)
One secondary weapon (this can't be a weapon that deals above d6 damage)
One knife
Uniform of the Sable Company, black
One other thing from the Equipment List, your choice. That would be the one thing you grabbed when the vortex hit the barracks.
These things do not count against your starting gold.

Rickard Forcae |

Bonus Feat/Traits
Rickard should expand his background, if wishes a bonus. Everyone else, except Arnad and Brandon get a bonus. Those two are not finished, as far as I can see.
Added a bit extra to the background and finished up the character so you can review it in case something is missing.

Is the gunsmithing kit from the gunslinger pdf available as the one piece of equipment? If so, I guess that's what I have.
As for the starting gold, what is the starting gold for a gunslinger? I have looked in both of the playtest pdf and do not see it. Further, am I understanding correctly that we have the actual gold (say in a purse on our body) and do not have any equipment beyond what is listed above? We will be making purchases for starting gear after the game begins?
