The other Heroic Path that I need someone to take is Beloved of Death.

Where do I find this path? I have looked in your PDF and in the Midnight core book and I cannot find it.

Grand Moff Vixen,

I've planed to include Varyag race in my 1st rules expansion, so I'd need to do a write up. Originally, I intended for it to have several subraces correlating with major lycanthropic archetypes. I thought to wait on Blood of the Moon by Paizo, but there is an excellent article about playing werecreatures published in Dragon Magazine #313. You can easily find it online. Just google it. If that is not up to your taste, you can try something else. :)

Taking a look at it. I may end up getting the Bite Me! Wereblooded book. It looks like it would be just up my alley.

Dark Archive

I've posted the link in the thread. Here it is again.

Edit: That would be great. Unfortunately, I can not buy the book yet, although I have it in mind, so you'll have to provide mi with information about what you want to play.

Any info I gain from a new book is classified. If you learned it I would have to start at level 10. :P

I have no issues with sharing what you would need. The more I think about it the more I want to play a lycanthrope. I will get the book sometime today and start playing around with it. I will send you a PM later tonight.

noble?: 1d20 ⇒ 16 Oh well.

Dark Archive

Eric,

your character gains the following (in addition to standard Elorg racial abilities):

+4 Charisma, +2 Dexterity
Royal Blood (Elorg and Shadar; related race: Elves), Child of Magic-Magical Lineage and Child of Magic-Magical Talent (these are bonus traits and are not counted against your usual number of traits)
Bloodline: Choose one Sorcerer bloodline and gain all abilities it offers.

Dark Archive

Vikturiun,

I'll post what your character gains from the noble background once you decide what you'll play.

I understand you wanting to have the Morgral character, and wanting the Beloved of Death, but I must tell you I have a strong inherent dislike of most things Vampire; it is a personal bias.

I had the same problem a few years back when my group wanted to play Vampire: The Masquerade. Even then I felt it was a tired cliché, and that was even before the whole recent Vampire explosion (True Blood/Twighlight/etc.) I went along, but didn't enjoy it much, and my dragging my feet with the whole thing ended up causing some within-group trouble. So for the sake of full disclosure, I don't know if I'm the best choice to play such a character.

I have played vampiresque things on occasion, but as a rule, I tend to avoid it.

Dark Archive

As I've already mentioned, there will not be any changing of the rules, except for small errata. But there will be expansions. Those expansions will bring new races, class talents and feats. Perhaps Heroic Paths as well. First expansion will be dedicated to the Shadowlands and it will bring Shadar, Morgral, Munin, Varyag and Shadow Goblin races, Bladedancer class and several new feats and spells. I will provide a separate document with expansion rules and a document with all rules in once place.

I do not expect that the game will take you to Shadowlands any time soon, but right now it is almost certain that the Party 1 will have at least two characters hailing from Shadowlands - and perhaps 3 or more. Also, I want to give you some food for thought about higher levels.

I totally respect that. Is it Erunsil Wildlander, then?

Dark Archive

@Eric

If you have my old rules, take a look at Bladedancer class. It may suit your character or it may not, but you should take a look at it just for inspiration.

@All

OK, I would really like that someone takes Morgral as a race and Beloved of Death as Heroic Path. But if there are no takers, I'll not insist. Anyway, Beloved of Death is more valkirya-like Heroic Path, since it invokes ravens, wolves etc. Just wanted to clarify that.

Moving on.

This party needs a healer. Right now, I'm pining for Gilian, who was the most effective healer PC I've ever known, but I realize that Martin would probably play something different this time. So, I'd like confirmation from everyone in Party 1 that no one will play the Healer, so that I can create a DMPC for you.

Dark Archive

By the way, recruitment is not closed. If there are interested players who are reading this, there is still room in both parties.

Any information for party 2?

Dark Archive

Right now there are only two concepts presented. I'm waiting on other players.

BTW if no one else selects it, I will take the Beloved of Death HP. That looks sweet and it probably would suit her quite well

Dark Archive

Done. It's yours and it does suit your concept.

Yes, I think I am swaying towards that, but it is not written in stone.

Hmmm, beloved of death you say? After looking it over I think it would fit with my lycanthrope. A lot. I am thinking of taking it as a roleplaying opportunity for me.

Dark Archive

Okay, you and Eric decide who will take it.. Eric, I can still create something suitably draconic for your character.

I'm here, sorry for not posting, for the last 2 days I had almost no spare time. But I will make the character over the weekend.

I envisioned Alan as a meld between talents of his parents, having Duncan's smites, buffs and martial abilities, and Gilian's healing power. So in the end, a paladin-like character ends up as a pretty good description.

Rolling for noble 1d20 ⇒ 18 Ah, well. As per usual, I will be rolling fumbles when we most need hits, and wasting good playrolls on stuff like this.

Ok, got a rough draft ready. It's far from complete, but highlights the concept sufficiently.

Faolán:

male human (Erenlander, Wilding) fighter 1[/b]
hgt: 5'0 wgt: 135 lbs
eyes: brown
skin: pale
age: 16
move: 30'

Concept:
Bestial warrior hungers for meaning in life beyond his people's feral existance.

Appearance:
Dressed simply in a well-fitting suit of orc-leathers and wolf-pelt leggings, Faolán's appearance goes beyond disheveled - it's uncivilized. The irises of his yellow eyes are massive, with no whites showing at the edges of his eyes, and matted lengths of dirty brown hair frame his lean, lanky face. His figure is gaunt and scarred; ribs, cheekbones, elbows, knuckles, and knees strain against his taut skin. His skin is stretched so tight in those places that the bones beneath are visible. A pair of small, hooked blades dangle from the sinewy rope he uses for a belt.

He figets constantly and paces ceaselessly when indoors, eyes darting and nostrils flared. When outside, he calms, though his demeanor becomes predatory, rather than relaxed.

Rough Backstory:
Born the runt of his litter to a family who already had too many mouths to feed, Faolán was never destined to be a warrior. His emaciated form lacked the fat pups need to survive the winter, and he was not expected to live. When he did not die, it was taken as a sign, and he was given to the shaman, to be raised and apprenticed.

Faolán learned many things at the twisted old man's hand, not the least of which was the miser's penchant for medical experimentation. Faolán endured many painful episodes as the shaman attempted to discover more effective remedies for the tribe. When the bitter old man deemed him grown enough, he added magical manipulation to his mundane meddling. The shaman was mightily surprised to discover that Faolán did not respond at all to such cures. The superficial cuts he administered refused to close to his healing charms, and this infuriated him.

He declared that Faolán had been born without a soul; the boy was exiled from the tribe and forced to make his own way in the world.

Incomplete Crunch:

HP: 14 (1d12[12]+1con+1fc)
AC: 21 (2 armor, 5 dex, 1 dodge, 3 insight)
BAB +1, CMB +0 [+6 w/ Cedeku], CMD 15
Str 8, Dex 20 [18+2], Con 12, Int 16, Wis 12, Cha 10
Fort +4, Ref +5, Will +1

Traits:
Personality: Latent Wolfbrother
Body: Ambidexterous
Spirit: Superior Intellect, Weapon Bond (Cedeku, Dex)
Flaws: Healing Resistant (Fully Immune)

Heroic Path (Ironborn):
Incredible Resiliance

Feats:
Dodge (1st)
Exotic Weapon Proficiency [Cedeku] (b-Erenlander[Sarcosan Weapon])
Two-Weapon Fighting (b-Erenlander)
Canny Defense [Int] (b-Erenlander)
Double Slice (b-fighter)

Talents:
Cunning Warrior

Misc:
Favored Region: Northern Erenland
Favored Class: Fighter (+1 HP)

Nightflier, I sent you a PM.

Lantern Lodge

I think I might be up for that Healer role. Let me work from that for a concept and see where it takes me.

Do you want us to make our backstory tie in to being a prisoner?

Dark Archive

@Heliopolix,

I love it so far.

@Michaelane

Great!

Nightflier, how does the Berserker Fighter work now? In the document it appears that it is a warriors path available at 4th level, but there is no specifics as to what abilities are granted at what level.

Also, there appears to be what I assume is a typo in the Fighter's BAB; at least I hope it's a typo, if not, everyone play fighters! Iterative attacks are listed at the same BAB as the first attack.

Lantern Lodge

Were you looking to combine Beloved of Death and Morgral into a single character or have each in the group? Sounds like the HP is taken care of, but I might be willing to try what would probably be a quite unusual Morgral and healer if it could even be effective. Otherwise, I'll work with something more mundane.

Lantern Lodge

After further thought, I'm thinking I'll probably go with a Danisil witch.

Berserker is a warrior's way now. You get Rage at 4th, Damage Reduction at 8th, Greater Rage at 12th, Tireless Rage at 16th and Mighty Rage at 20th level.

Yeah, it's a typo. Thank you for mentioning it. Fighters have standard iterative attacks, although they get Vital Strike as bonus feat at 6th level, and Vital Strike now scales with level.

I will fix that when I do 1st expansion.

They can be combined or separate, although it's fine if no one plays either. Do you plan to be a healer with your Danisil Witch, or will you go in another direction? (With talent system, channeler can be both healer and a witch. :) ) It's no pressure. As I've mentioned, I'll just create an NPC/DMPC if a healer is still needed after the recruitment.

Grand Moff Vixen wrote:

No need. I've sent you some notes on Varyag, so it would be nice if your character can be tied with Eric's and High Duke's. Perhaps he or she can be a siol to Eric's character. Take a look at my notes and then tell me what you think. You can do that here - no need for PM.

Dark Archive

For those who may be interested, Varyag race:

Varyag:
Varyag

Varyags are descendants of Wildings trapped in the Shadowlands. Although only 100 years have passed on Eredane, almost ten times as much has passed in the Shadowlands since the first Wildings fell through the shadows and entered the domain of the Shadar lords.
Varyags live in a complicated society made of clans, septs and siols.
Clans are basically groups of families descendant from those first Wildings. There are 13 major clans and several smaller ones.
Septs designate a different kind of kinship. Althoug all of those first Wildings were wolfblooded, in time other kinds of bonds with animal spirits grew among them. There are 4 major septs: Wolf, Bear, Snow Tiger and Fox – as well as a number of smaller ones. Full half of Varyags belong to the Wolf Sept. The rest are equally divided between remaining 3 major and all the other lesser septs.
Siol is Shadar word meaning seed or lesser progeny. It is used to describe the relationship between Varyags and Shadar nobles. Those first Northmen who found themselves in the Shadowlands couldn't survive if it weren't for the Shadar who accepted them and provided them food and shelter. That created the first bonds of loyalty and Varyag descendants of those Wildings are fiercely loyal and devoted to their elven lords. Siol is an obligation of honor not of blood, so it si common for the members of different clans and septs to be loyal to the same lord. Varyags usually provide bodyguard and elite enforcer troops for the Shadar, but since Shadar are much les numerous than Varyags – and Shadar nobles even more so – only small percentage of Varyags are siol.
Physically, Varyags are obviously of Dorn blood. They are tall and rugged people, with light hair and skin. Although warm among themselves, they are insular and cautious when dealing with the rest of Shadowland inhabitants, although they trust Shadar nobles almost blindly. Strangely, but the shifty Shadar lords never have betrayed that trust – perhaps in fear what would happen if the Varyag clans lost their loyalty towards the Shadar.
Varyags have a saying that the eyes are mark of the beast. Their eye color depends on their sept, essentially. Wolfblooded and Foxblooded have amber or silver eyes; Bearblooded have solid black eyes and Tigerblooded have blue or green cat eyes.

Varyags as a Race

• +2 Constitution, +2 Strength or Dexterity; -2 Charisma. Varyags are strong, sturdy and quick, but insular and they keep to themselves.
• Medium: As Medium creatures, Varyag have no special bonuses or penalties due to their size.
• Varyag base land speed is 40 feet.
• Weapon Familiarity: Varyag may treat broad swords and bearded axes as martial weapons, rather than as exotic weapons.
• Favored Region: Shadowland’s North.
• Low-light Vision: Varyag can see twice as far as a human in starlight, moonlight, torchlight, and similar conditions of poor illumination. They retain the ability to distinguish color and detail under these conditions.
• Damage Resistance: Varyag have DR 2/silver.
• Automatic Languages: Varyag, Shadar.
• Favored Class Options: Same as Dorn

I will also create a number of 5-level Lycan classes, each based on a specific animal (Wolf, Bear, Snow Tiger, Fox etc.) This will allow playing of both infected and natural lycans. Although, because of time constraints, I will do so only for type of werebeast that a player wants to play. With time, I'll do all major ones.

Hey Nightflier,

I really like the Bladedancer class and think that would be better choice instead of Rogue at 1st level. Also I want to have her possess the Shadow bloodline.

The HP is a tough choice here. Since she is a Noble Shadar the Charismatic HP makes more sense now, although the BoD and the Shadow Walker paths would also suit her as well. I will wait to see what GMV thinks as well.

Let's see what a roll will bring me on the noble table.

1d20 - 12 ⇒ (13) - 12 = 1

I DID IT! WOOHOO! :P I love messing with the dice roller.

No noble for me. That works anyhow as I didn't want to do a noble anyways.

Dark Archive

Here is Varyag race and Lycan 5-level class, with Weretiger as example:

Varyag/Lycan

Guys, only two of you managed to suggest concepts so far...

I'm thinking a healer witch. The new talents are what sent me in this direction. And I think it's a great fit with the Danisil, so I'll see where that leads.

Who still needs to put forward concepts? What happens if the other concepts don't arrive?

I will continue to work on the character in the evening again after work.

I guess I'm the other concept from #2, I'll get to work on a profile today.

Dark Archive

@Heliopolix

If you want, you can use statistics for Varyag for your Wilding, or you can use Dorn, but exchange one racial ability for Beast Shape I 1/day.

That sounds very interesting. Especially since Danisil are not played nearly enough.

Here is the character I have in progress. I am of course still working on details.

At present I am going ahead with an Erunsil Wildlander.

The varyarg are cool, I'll use them, or if you only want one wilding, I'll use the Erenlander and let Grand Moff have it. Do they become wolves involuntarily at night in accordance with the wilding paragraph earlier, or has the generations since the pact bred that trait out? Also I couldn't find the stats for the bearded axe.

One aspect I was trying to work in was he was born without the ability to change or be magically healed. So he's crippled spiritually as well as physically. In a culture that values strength and brutality, he is a pariah.

He is deeply shamed of this (though he had no say in the way he was born, obviously), and wants more than anything to prove himself and be welcomed and accepted back into his clan. He originally set out to find a way to unleash the beat within, but the world is a harsh and unforgiving place and his ignorant quest has become a fight for survival. Outside the shelter and safety of his clan, he's had to resort to desperate measures just to get by; measures likely responsible for his current incarceration.

The building of character is going well. For my Naturalist Channeler Aasimar I aiming to go nature based, though will have a major focus on healing by means of Healer Heroic Path, spell choices and possible racial abilities. Being very non-melee combatant, the Wild Shape at 3rd level would mainly be used as last resort and for general travel.

Eric, if you still wanted to take the Beloved of Death path go ahead. After looking over the class details for the Varyag it looks like it won't be as good a fit as I was hoping.

I have decided to take the Varyag class. Time to begin crafting a background and the crunch.

OK let's make it official: Solvi's Daughter will take the Beloved of Death HP.

BTW does anyone have any suggestions for what I should name her?

How about this "Thorn in Izrador's Butt"

I sure you come up with something interesting.

I still have not come up with a name for my character.

@nightflier:

1. need the language list for Aasimar in Midnight
2. is there favoured class option for Channeler (Naturalist)

Eric, if you're just stuck for any old name, both behindthename.com and the Everchanging Book of Names (pyorre.net) could help you out.

Group 1: Update

High Duke - Erenlander Fighter/Channeler - Paladin
Eric - Elorg/Shadar Bladedancer/Channeler - Shadow Mage
Scranford - Erenlander Defender - One armed badass
Vikturiun - Erusnil Fighter/Wildlander
Grand Moff Vixen - Varyag
michaelane - Danisil Channeler - Healer Witch

Documentation error

I picked up two contradictions in your Traits section.
On page 1:
A character can have maximum of 1 Trait of Personal History, 2 Traits of Body and 2 Traits of Spirit.

Contradicts
On page 1 (Born on the Battlefield): Special: This Trait can be taken more than once, but different abilities must be chosen.

On page 2 (Child of Magic): Special: This Trait can be taken more than once, but different abilities must be chosen.

I noticed that a lot of the "skill ranks" seem to more closely reflect 3.5 instead of Pathfinder. Should we convert these or are they right... ie something said 8 ranks at level 1, and 2 ranks per level after that.
