Verik is a handsome man still wearing his Korvosan guard armour (chainmail), despite his current situation. He carries a spear, and composite longbow with 20 arrows, all the best quality as they are from the guard. He also carries a potion marked "Healing, II" with a guard insignia. Finally, he has a letter, detailing the location of all the world's meat, and the plan to start it up as a free meat provider, simply signed, V.

Can't miss that knowledge local. Verik still has his armor on. The idea being to disarm him not to rob him. Can I figure out where he was headed or who the mysterious "V." is? (not sure whether it's a letter he wrote himself or not.) So can I try and determine who "V." could be in the area or direction he was headed.Knowledge local or geography (1d20+5=8) Well that's not gonna help. Malik? Ward'? You guys have a clue?

When Verik comes around, "The Field Marshall wants some words with you." Holding up the letter so he can see it. "If you come clean about this I'll put a good word in for you otherwise you know as well as I what happens to deserters or traitors in times like these." ending on a menacing note. Intimidate (1d20+9=26) Yay! My first decent intimidate so far.

We begin to head back to "All The World's Meat" to rejoin the others fairly quickly as Reth is worried about them. Verik is hobbled with rope so he can walk but not run. As he leaves the area Reth flips a gold coin too the beggar, "Right sorry about that, we were catchin a fugitive. You don't happen to know where he was headed or seen him in the area before have ya?" Holding out another gold coin in case he does.

The Thugs visibly pale at this sight, and the man near Cal stands.

"Ok, you seem to have Verik, can we get to the guard HQ now, so that my friend here can get the medical attention he needs?"

No longer on init, and everyone back together, what do ya'll want to do?

That will take a few hours, for a thorough search, and is likely to get very boring for the player's guarding the prisoners.....Oh, and no, you don't get to search more than 10 rooms with one roll :)

lol, who's rolling? Just taking the time to take 20's and was thinking that we caught all the guards and hoping we could just get the highlights of our next few hours. Barring the others arguing against it Reth is in no hurry and will do the search even if it's room by room. Naa, highlights miss the context that gives the real gruesome fun.....In some places they are fine, but here, I think it may well be worth having a good old hunt around.....Obviously, if everyone wants to go the, roll-room-roll, route, that's fine.

Just remember, you can't take 10 (or 20) on rolls to aid another...you have a big party, you can get a lot higher than 25 if you all help out

Oh, and theres a few places were you want something *other* than search....

Oh while I'm at it, have 500XP each for that little lot.....

Male Human-Chelaxian Ranger 3

Ok, so how about this. We'll hobble all the prisoners and then search each floor together. We'll keep the prisoners in in a central location on the floor we are searching so they are never more than a room away and one of us will keep an eye on them. Anyone have a better perception than my +5? If so I'll assist that person if not than you guys assist me but I say whomever is the primary searcher still takes a 20. Remember that your all second level now so maybe your perception went up too. Obviously there is still "gruesome" stuff to find so let's start with the upper floor, ok? Anyone? Bueller?

Male Human: Shoanti Paladin 3/3500xp

"I say we tie them somewhere central then search from the outside in, then even if they manage to get free they have to get past at least one of us before they manage to escape and as we have thier weapons thats somewhat unlikely." Ward' says somewhat serenely.

Four long hours pass for Ath and Call, alone in a room with one stable, but unconscious man, another fretting over his friend, two snoring Thugs, and a very dejected Verik. Sunlight is slanting through the shutters of the windows before the others return.

The searchers wander through the building as Reth takes it apart with a fine toothed comb. From the stairs the obvious first room to enter is a meet locker. Prepared meat is stored here before being taken into the shop. The air in this room is stale, stinking of day-old meat and blood. Straw litters the floor, scattered to catch what drips from the meat hooks affixed to the walls and ceiling on metal rods. To the north is a low blood-stained table and two barrels of salt, while to the south, a pair of double doors stands. An iron bar extends through a narrow hole at the top of the doors; the bar runs along the ceiling for five feet before ending at a vertical pole running floor to ceiling.

Knowledge Nature DC 25:

Spoiler:
Searching through the joints you notice something strange, some of the hams are too long, and narrow, and some of the pork rib joints too large, but with not enough ribs, a closer inspection reveals the joints to be humanoid in nature, rather than Suidae.

The next room is the largest in the building, at almost 40x50ft, The floor of this chamber is strewn with blood-stained straw, and the reek of slaughter is almost overpowering. The room itself is a killing floor. A metal track affixed to the ceiling dangles meat hooks here and there, allowing the hooks and their gory loads to be moved easily from the northwest where a large hammer sits on the floor amid a permanent bloodstain. To the south, a bloodstained grill covers a wide hole in the
floor. Just north of the grill sit two large vats of water; one boiling and one cold. Two large butcher blocks stand to the east next to barrels of salt, and in the southeast corner sits a reeking vat of cast-off meat and bones.

You will need to break through the grill to investigate further in this room.

A quick glance into the next room shows them to be inhabited by vicious looking pigs, pulling at their tethers and kicking the walls of the pen...

Ok, the hammer will do 1d4+<str mod> bludgening damage, so up to you. Reth is still a little wounded isn't he?

There are three pigs, so 1 more roll please. These function as diplomacy checks in the normal fashion, so you don't really get re-rolls unless you can do something that may make a difference to their attitude...They are also outright vicious pigs, that would need to be gotten to indifferent to make a difference, so, one is currently still hostile, one is unfriendly, and one is pending your roll.

Male Human-Chelaxian Ranger 3

One more wild empathy check (1d20+4=7) Bah!

Reth looks at the vicious pigs and wonders what the former guards did that could have made them this way. Turning toward Ward' and Malik, "These beasts are liable to attack anythin that gets near them. They will probably have to be slaughtered before they hurt anyone. Goin to leave them be for the moment", he says as he closes the door. "Ward' you want to see if we can lift this grate?"

I'll assist Ward' since he has the higher strength. Strength check to assist Ward' (1d20+2=6) Wow, not much help there. At looking at the hammer as being pretty useless to bash through anything made of metal. Can we find a prybar or run the chains through it to lift it out?

Nevyn wrote:

I think so but it depends on how long it took to get to this point. He took 4 non-lethal earlier from falling (so mostly the wind knocked out of him I think). I updated it on my sheet when he took it so it's there if you want to reference it ever.

Talon:

Spoiler:
Talon's thirst for vengence, and Gadren Lamm's blood has been matched by nothing in his life except for the frustration, when he finally found the cover of the riots, and the skill to defeat him, to discover that he was mere moments too late...His first incling that something was amiss came under the water of the river. Gobblegut shot past him, strange on two counts, firstly, Gobblegut never leave lamm's side, and secondly, Talon was still alive to see the tail disapear into the current.
Rising to the surface to catch a breath between water and floorboards, he heard feet above, many feet, both heavy and light, but all too heavy to be children. This was clue number three, Gadren never lets anyone into his chambers beneath the fishery, except children who have a very short fate. Talon waits, patiently while these people loot the place, and slowly one voice brings back memories. A dark man, who's wife Lamm has had killed, arguing with Lamm, and Lamm manipulating him into killing a rival. Talon never saw Atherton Dram after this, until today. His suspicion is confirmed as they leave with a glimpse of Atherton through the crack in the floorboards. Talon waits a few minutes more, then clambers into the room from the central pool, gives Lamm a solid kick, and watches him splash into the pool, to sink slowly to the bottom, soon to feed the reefclaws.
More days follow, hunting out Atherton Dram and slowly but surely, with lots of favours called in, Talon traces the thief through the riotus streets of Korvosa. Finally following him, to the very gates of the Korvosan guard's HQ. He waits and sees Atherton with a whole group of people, A tall Shoanti, and a beautiful dancer, and others not so descript. He follows them through the streets, to an old butchers shop, and after most of the night, after the sun has risen in a cloud free sky, he sees the group emerge, one of the men covered in filth, and stinking, but all laughing, trailing a group of men in guard uniforms fettered with rope....

The muck and sewage comes right up to where the grid was, or there abouts, so there's no point wasting the sunrod. Reth doesn't really notice anything unusual about the muck pile, it's just various discarded body parts...
