On Douena's turn

"Oh, hello!" Douena calls cheerfully, directing her attention to the pygmy that banged its spear. "Are you the captain? I'm Douena. Desna sent me. Do you know Desna?" She looks for any sign of recognition, or even that they understand Common. "She lives in the sky?" She points upward. "Anyway, she sent me a dream when I was sleeping last night," she folds her hands and lays her head on them, "about your ship." She points emphatically. "So I was wondering if I could come on board," she makes walking motions with two fingers in the direction of the ship, "and see why she wanted me to come here. Would that be all right?"

Has she heard them make any kind of sound that might be a language? If so, she will use her spell-like ability to comprehend languages (no verbal, somatic, or material components that might look threatening).

She hasn't heard them say anything or make any sounds at all, other than banging spears. It's possible that they just can't be heard over the sound of the water, but there's no indication their mouths are moving in a way that resembles speech and they seem to be able to hear Douena. Also the last bunch the party fought never said anything or made any sounds.

Urza prepares himself and Douena calls out to the pygmies on the ship. They peer at her, but don't shift positions with their spears.

The pygmy at the sound end of the ship appears to be their leader. He carries a longspear (as opposed to the regular spears the others carry). He holds it up and motions to the pygmy closest to him and then motions to the fungus rope.

ROUND 2

The pygmy motioned to (hereafter referred to as #5) lowers his spear, moves to the fungal bridge Douena's at the end of and starts moving across.

Vegepygmy #5 Climb: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (11) + 0 = 11

The other three pygmies move closer to the bridge Douena is on and once again prepare to throw their spears (ready action).

Next Up: Mahjik, Aakif, Lorenz, Makoa, Urza, Douena, Vegepygmy Leader, Vegepygmy #5, Other Vegepygmies (subject to readied actions).

Map Updated

Whispering loud enough to be understood by Douena, but not far beyond her, "If a second one comes across - pull back!"

Other than that he is content to wait til more action is afoot. In total defense as always :)

Male Human (Andoran) Fighter Lvl 5

Lorenz, surprised that the creatures weren't exactly racing across to confront them, frowns thoughtfully.

"Isn't it strange that Douena 'dreams' about this place in such detail? Then when we come here, she approaches the creatures as though they're friends? They have all those spears but they're not attacking her. I don't know, it seems kind of weird."

He shakes his head and begins to move forward.

Lorenz double moves next to Makoa at I40.

Male Human (Kelishite) Mounted Fury Barbarian 2

"... Yet. Not attacking her yet." Still, Aakif holds his second shot, training his aim on the pygmy set to cross the fungal rope.

Ready an action to shoot the first pygmy that attacks anyone in the party. He'll continue to do so until actual combat starts or until the situation changes in some significant way.

Mahjik and Aakif prepare themselves and continue to wait, while Lorenz moves up a little closer.

Next Up: Makoa, Urza, Douena, Vegepygmy Leader, Vegepygmy #5, Other Vegepygmies, Mahjik, Aakif, Lorenz.

There's a distinct chance that not a whole lot will happen in the next couple of rounds, so if people would like me to speed through them, just say so. Of course, if there are things anyone wants to do in that time, that's okay, too.

In case I wasn't clear before, I will move with Makoa to stay 5 - 10 feet behind him and supply ranged support for him.

Female Gnome Cleric 4/ Rogue (burglar) 3

Aw, they're just little moldy Ewoks. ;)

Douena smiles encouragingly at the pygmy crossing the bridge, slightly bouncing on her toes with barely contained excitement.

I'm in favor of fast-forwarding a bit then; I think our plan is to stay where we are and try to commit as many to them to come of the ship as possible. (That last part is where Douena comes in.)

Haven't heard from Makoa yet, but I'm going to go on the assumption that you're all waiting to see what happens before attacking.

ROUND 3
Pygmy #5 continues across the fungus rope. Another pygmy (who will be referred to as #4) starts across the next fungus rope to the north). The other pygmies continue to hold their spears ready to throw.
Pygmy #4 Climb: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (5) + 0 = 5
Pygmy #5 Climb: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (3) + 0 = 3
#5 makes no progress.

ROUND 4
As round 3.
Pygmy #4 Climb: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (12) + 0 = 12
Pygmy #5 Climb: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (6) + 0 = 6

ROUND 5
As round 3.
Pygmy #4 Climb: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (1) + 0 = 1
Pygmy #5 Climb: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (15) + 0 = 15
#4 makes no progress.

ROUND 6
As round 3.
Pygmy #4 Climb: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (13) + 0 = 13
Pygmy #5 Climb: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (8) + 0 = 8

ROUND 7
As round 3.
Pygmy #4 Climb: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (20) + 0 = 20
Pygmy #5 Climb: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (20) + 0 = 20
They are nearly across now.

ROUND 8
As round 3.
Pygmy #4 Climb: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (13) + 0 = 13
Pygmy #5 Climb: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (1) + 0 = 1
#5 makes no progress, but #4 makes it to shore.

ROUND 9
#5 continues to climb, while #4 moves up to Douena (double move).
Pygmy #5 Climb: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (17) + 0 = 17
#5 reaches the shore beside #4. Both pygmies point their spears at Douena threateningly and motion to the fungus rope as if suggesting she start across.

Next Up: Mahjik, Aakif, Lorenz, Makoa, Urza, Douena, Vegepygmy Leader, Vegepygmies #4 and #5, Other Vegepygmies.

Map Updated

Mahjik whistles softly under his breath as he limbers through the mushrooms. "Douena! It is time to withdraw!" He double moves to about G40, making sure to make targeting difficult by dodging behind mushrooms - if thrown spears would hit him, he does have deflect arrows to prevent the first hit at least.

Female Gnome Cleric 4/ Rogue (burglar) 3

Douena glances back at Mahjik, a little bit of fear in her eyes. "But they're doing what I asked; I asked to come on the boat. If we hurt them now, when they haven't done anything but what I asked them to, that makes us the bad guys!" Looking back at the two pygmies, she forces her face back into a smile. "I'm not very good at climbing sometimes," she confides to the vegepygmies as she carefully steps onto the fungus rope.

Can I use Acrobatics like to walk a tightrope rather than Climb? Her modifier's better. I'll roll both for now.

"Douena! That is a bad idea!"

If we move out of the fungus and along the edge of the water, will the movement be easier? At any rate, Lorenz will move closer to the ship up to G49, re-sheave his rapier, remove his shield and pull out his bow. But that's just for a sort of fast-forward action. If we're getting right into the thick of things, I'll probably do something a little different.

"Maybe she's been enchanted by them? Perhaps they're the ones who have been sending her the dreams, to draw us here as a sort of trap?" Lorenz says, looking nervous as he moves nearer.

Lorenz Aeryson wrote:

It's still difficult terrain because of the mud. Also, I presume you mean G39, unless you want to go deep into the fungus jungle. :) As for fast-forwarding that will depend on how people react to Douena climbing onto the rope. We haven't heard from everyone who goes before her, but I'll assume they wait to see what she does.

Mahjik and Lorenz move a little closer, Mahjik calling out to Douena. Urza also calls out to her, but to little avail it seems, as she steps out onto the fungus rope.

Douena Trestleben wrote:

Although the adventure specifies Climb, I'll allow Acrobatics as it makes sense based on the description. Of course, that leaves the question of why the vegepygmies didn't do that, since they're better at Acrobatics than Climb, and it's a faster rate of movement (half instead of quarter speed). The DC even ends up the same! I guess it's just one of those things: they get so used to doing it one way, they never think of doing it differently. :)

Douena moves nimbly and quickly over the fungus, much more quickly than the fungus men did coming over.

The vegepygmy leader continues to watch.

ROUND 10

Vegepygmies #4 and #5 move towards the party, holding out their spears threateningly. (Move actions to C38 and 39. Ready actions to attack those who come in threat range.)
The vegepygmies on board the ship remain ready with their spears as well.

Next Up: Mahjik, Aakif, Lorenz, Makoa, Urza, Douena, Vegepygmy Leader, Vegepymies (subject to readied actions).

Map Updated

Mahjik rushes as far as he can; he'll follow Douena onto the ship if they let him.

Male Human (Andoran) Fighter Lvl 5

Turns out I misunderstood: At the time I posted last, I hadn't been aware that we'd already fast-forwarded several rounds. Oops. Well Lorenz is still taking the actions I posted, returning rapier to scabbard, removing shield, drawing bow. Basically that's two rounds.

As Mahjik reaches the two vegepygmies, they stab at him with their spears.

Vegepygmy #4 spear: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Vegepygmy #5 spear: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11

Both attacks miss.

Mahjik has only used a single move action so far, so he has a standard left if he wishes it. I have place him in D39 (15 ft traveled, counting as 30 ft).

Lorenz Aeryson wrote:

I'm willing to allow those actions to have taken place during those rounds. So we'll say he has his bow out by this point.

Next Up: Mahjik's standard action, Aakif, Lorenz, Makoa, Urza, Douena, Vegepygmy Leader, Other Vegepygmies (subject to readied actions), Vegepygmies #4 and #5.

Map Updated

"Wise man would not do this", Mahjik appears to step left, but turns his body all the way to slip right by the funguys.

Tumble, at full speed 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12

If Mahjik gets far enough he'll follow Douena on the mushroom ropes.

Balance, following Douena 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13

Though I think he'll only make it to A39 or so.

Unless we can use acrobatics to increase our speed in difficult terrain? Mahjik would attempt that for.

Faster! 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24

Mahjik the Flink wrote:

Unfortunately, you can't use Acrobatics to increase speed through difficult terrain. Your initial tumble check is not high enough to get past at full speed, so they take attacks of opportunity.

As Mahjik tries to slip around the fungus men, the jab at him again with their spears.

Vegepygmy #4 spear AoO: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19
Vegepygmy #5 spear AoO: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17
#4 damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1
#5 damage: 1d6 ⇒ 2

The two spears pierce his legs as he moves, but luckily, they are only minor wounds. Mahjik then slips past them, getting close to the fungal rope Douena is crossing on.

As the check wasn't large enough to go through a pygmy's square, he needs to go around and can only get to A40 rather than A39.

Next Up: Aakif, Lorenz, Makoa, Urza, Douena, Vegepygmy Leader, Other Vegepygmies, Vegepygmies #4 and #5, Mahjik.

Yes, you're right. I completely forgot his readied action. My apologies!

Lorenz fires his bow and hits the vegepygmy right in the chest. Alas, it seems to have little effect.

I'm not sure if you missed that the pygmies did attack Mahjik even though they let Douena by.

After Urza's action, if he's not still backing up Makoa

Douena has been focussing on keeping her feet on the narrow fungus bridge, but the ruckus back on shore finally draws her attention. "No! No! No!" she cries in dismay. With a worried glance over her shoulder at the ship, she turns and heads back down the bridge as quickly as possible. Acrobatics 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18 "Don't attack! Mahjik, make them stop!"

Presumably, Urza is still following Makoa's lead, so he waits.

Douena easily makes it back to shore. On board the ship, the pygmy leader bangs his spear against the deck angrily.

ROUND 11

The other two pygmies on board the ship (#2 and #3) climb on to the fungal ropes and attempt to mimic Douena's method of crossing.

Vegepygmy #2 Acrobatics: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Vegepygmy #3 Acrobatics: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22

They scurry part way across, one on the southern bridge and one on the middle bridge.

Still backing up Makoa

I'm going to go ahead and move things forward.

Aakif moves up a little closer (to I41) and prepares to fire again if the vegepygmies attack again, which is what they do almost immediately. #4 moves up to Mahjik and stabs at him with the spear. Aakif lets loose his arrow.

Shortbow: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9

Once again, luck is not with Aakif as the arrow goes far aside.
Makoa also reacts with his readied action and moves forward towards the bridge and the battle (reaching F40).

Vegepygmy #4 Spear attack on Mahjik: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

Mahjik easily dodges the vegepygmy's attack.

#5 moves up to Douena and attacks her.

Vegepygmy #5 Spear attack on Douena: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1

The spearhead scrapes across her hand, but it's only a minor cut.

He takes a step forward, trying to stay out of Makoa's way and eyeing the cliff's edge with a wary eye. Then he shoots again, aiming for the mold-man standing in front of Douena.

Five foot step to F38.

Attack 2 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14 damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

Provided the first attack is enough to drop the creature, Mahjik will move next to Douena, trying to impose himself on her assailant.

Douena looks at the small smear of blood on her hand a bit woggle-eyed; this is the first time she's actually been attacked since they've been on the island. "Only because he tried to get past them without asking permission! If they showed up at our camp, you wouldn't just let them stroll right in, would you?" Withdraw to -G39

No cliff edge here. You're on a muddy beach. But I can understand the misconception since there have been so many cliffs on the island! :)

Lorenz Aeryson wrote:

It actually counts as a move action, since you can't take a 5-step in difficult terrain. However, it doesn't affect his other actions.

Lorenz fires another arrow, but it goes astray and vanishes in the water.

Urza follows Makoa forward (moving to H41).

Douena withdraws away from the fight.

The leader then moves to the fungus rope and begins crossing (reaching -A24).

Sensing that her cause is in desperate need of a Grand Gesture, Douena moves back toward the southernmost fungus bridge, to -D39 raising her holy symbol above her head dramatically. "O Great and Powerful Desna," she intones loudly, one eye on the pygmy leader to gauge his reaction, "display your mercy and restore life to the fallen, that our two tribes may war no more!!!" Channel Positive Energy 1d6 ⇒ 6

The song of Desna reverberates from Douena, spreading across much of the battlefield. The pygmy at Makoa's feet regains consciousness and looks up with an expression of both surprise and fear. The effect does not reach Urza (who is just out of range), Aakif, and the two vegepygmies crossing the southern fungus bridge (#1 and #2).

The vegepygmy leader continues crossing the bridge.

Mahjik holds up his hands non-threateningly, smile in tow. Against all evidence of the prior rounds he soothes, "See? No weapons?"

Male Human (Andoran) Fighter Lvl 5

Lorenz, exasperated by the insanity that seems to have plagued Douena, returns his bow to its place on his back and puts his hand on the pommel of his rapier. "She really is trying to kill us all," he mutters.

Lorenz isn't going to do anything else for now, but if one of the mold-men step within 5 feet of him, he's going to draw his rapier.

Female Gnome Cleric 4/ Rogue (burglar) 3

Douena offers the vegepygmy chief a brilliant smile. "See? He's fine. Don't bite him, Makoa. It was all just a mistake." She shoots Lorenz a glare. "I said I'd get them off the ship, didn't I?" She waits for the chieftan to finish crossing the bridge.

The pygmies still on the fungus continue crossing and reach the shore. The chieftain arrives on the shore and sticks the shaft of his spear into the mud, keeping hold on it at an angle. He surveys the group, then begins making hand signals at the other fungus men. They form up beside him. The one lying at Makoa's feet gets up slowly, leaving his spear lying in the mud, and joins the others.

The chieftain then points at the ship and motions to Douena, then points at the ship again. He then motions to the others in the party and points at the ship each time.
