ROUND 3

Seeing his companions falling quite quickly, #4 begins to retreat back across the camp site and down the beach, out of sight of everyone but Douena (double move to CK -80).

DM Stuff:
Native #3 stabilization check: 1d20 + 2 - 11 ⇒ (4) + 2 - 11 = -5 -- fail

Next Up: Makoa, Native #2, Mahjik, Aakif, Lorenz, Urza, Douena, Native #4.

Female Gnome Cleric 4/ Rogue (burglar) 3

Seeing the fourth native getting away, Douena perks up. Calling on her innate magic, she points her fingers at Makoa and Urza and whispers, "There's one getting away on the other side of the campfire. Don't let him bring back more of them." Although her voice is quiet, the two half-orcs hear her voice clearly in their ears. using SLA message She moves up next to Lorenz in the dim light. to CF-106

Last post should have said that Douena can go at any time, rather than keeping her in the initiative order. But she was clearly well aware of that. :)

Makoa and Urza hear Douena's message. Douena moves closer.

Next Up: Makoa, Native #2, Mahjik, Aakif, Lorenz, Urza, Native #4, Douena.

Map Updated

Provided #2 is still standing by his turn, Mahjik will flurry him with the full extent of the random-number-generator! If possible, stepping into flanking (but that is not accounted for in the rolls below)

Attack 1 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14 damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Attack 2 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20 damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6

Presumably Makoa continues his attack, and then goes after the retreating one per Douena's request (if the one he's attacking goes down), so I'll go with that...

Makoa raging power bite: 1d20 + 6 - 1 ⇒ (2) + 6 - 1 = 7

Makoa attempts to bite #2, but the native steps out of the way at just the right moment.

Seeing his one remaining ally has fled, #2 also does the same thing (withdraw action through CJ-98 to CK-82). He backs carefully away from Makoa, Mahjik, and Aakif, and then moves surprisingly quickly across the campsite (yes, his 90-ft double move is not an error). He makes it just to the edge of the dim light for the humans and half-orcs (edge of bright light for Douena).

DM Stuff:
Native #1 stabilization check: 1d20 + 2 - 6 ⇒ (19) + 2 - 6 = 15 -- pass

Next Up: Mahjik, Aakif, Lorenz, Urza, Native #4, Douena, Makoa, Native #2.
I'm presuming Mahjik wants to change his previously stated action. :)

Map Updated

"Wise man would, and I do too, apologize in advance - but I feel this is necessary -", Mahjik suddenly pushes Makao fiercely out of the way; then slaps Soulwind and Aakif on the thigh. "Go go go! Don't let them escape!"

Bullrush push Makao 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15 Considering that Makao is flat-footed to this, it should be enough. Hopefully this is enough for Aakif to charge through to the running baddies.

Mahjik uses the remainder of his move action to follow the running natives

Heh! :)

Makoa stumbles backwards from Mahjik's sudden shove. As Mahjik moves after the fleeing natives, the way is cleared for Aakif and Soulwind to charge through.

I've moved Mahjik round the south side of the campfire to CK-95, so that Aakif can charge across the north side.

Next Up: Aakif, Lorenz, Urza, Native #4, Douena, Makoa, Native #2, Mahjik.
Keep in mind only #2 is in visual range of most of the party at the moment (only Douena can see #4).

Map Updated

Male Human (Kelishite) Mounted Fury Barbarian 2

"Hyah!" Aakif calls out and Soulwind surges forward, spraying sand from her hooves, which swirls in chaotic, eerie patterns.

Charging, raging power attack on #2. 2/8 rounds of rage used today.

Attack: 1d20 + 6 + 2 + 2 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (5) + 6 + 2 + 2 + 1 - 1 = 15
Damage: 2d4 + 10 ⇒ (3, 2) + 10 = 15

Spirit Slam: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19
Damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

Fight with mount: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23

Soulwind Attack: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 3 + 2 = 17
Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Miss chances for low light conditions (higher is better):
Aakif: 1d100 ⇒ 11
Spirits: 1d100 ⇒ 14
Soulwind has low-light vision.

Ouch. Two nice hits negated by dim light. :(

The native manages to avoid Aakif's sword and the swirl patterns surrounding him, but as he does so, he ends up right in the path of Soulwind's hooves, which batter him across the chest.

Next Up: Lorenz, Urza, Native #4, Douena, Makoa, Native #2, Mahjik, Aakif.

Lorenz runs forward. "I don't think we want them to get away."

Run to CE-93, assuming sand isn't going to impact his movement.

Urza runs after the fleeing natives.

Lorenz and Urza rush forward.

At a full run, Urza can catch up to both natives (and be able to see both of them). I'm not sure exactly how close to them you wanted Urza to get, so I've moved him right up to #2 at CL-83. However, if you wanted him back a bit in order to cast a spell or something, just let me know.

ROUND 4

Realizing that while he's fast, he's not fast enough to outrun a horse, #4 turns back and moves to attack Soulwind (moving to CI-82).

Native #4 scimitar on Soulwind: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10

He is not able to damage the horse.

Makoa runs after everyone, dropping to all fours as his eyes glow yellow in the darkness. The prey was running, and the pack was chasing after it..

Unfortunately, the distance is too far to get an attack at the end.

Douena moves forward and Makoa runs into the action, reaching #4.

#2 yells wildly and swings his sword at Soulwind.

Native #2 scimitar on Soulwind: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

The sword slices just above Soulwind's front legs, coming back red.

Next Up: Mahjik, Aakif, Lorenz, Urza, Native #4, Douena, Makoa, Native #2.

Map Updated

Mahjik picks out a well-burning piece of wood from the camp fire where one end is not burning; he picks it up by the colder end and follows after the others (to CK-89).

Male Human (Andoran) Fighter Lvl 5

Huffing and puffing, Lorenz continues running.

Lorenz runs to CG-83.

Male Human (Kelishite) Mounted Fury Barbarian 2

Continue raging. Aakif's attack will go on the least-injured-looking one. The spirits and Soulwind will attack the other.

Raging Power Attack: 1d20 + 6 + 2 + 2 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (8) + 6 + 2 + 2 + 1 - 1 = 18
Damage: 2d4 + 10 ⇒ (1, 3) + 10 = 14

Soulwind attack 1: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Soulwind attack 2: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

Miss chances, if applicable.
Aakif: 1d100 ⇒ 89
Spirits: 1d100 ⇒ 74

Mahjik grabs some burning wood and moves forward while Aakif unleashes another attack at the natives. His blade swipes across #4, cutting from the shoulder and across the chest. The native stumbles, clearly badly injured, but manages to remain standing.

Soulwind attempts to attack #2, but the native manages to avoid the horse's hooves. However, the swirling shapes around Aakif, barely noticeable in the dim light, batter at the native, knocking his head from side to side.

Lorenz continues to try to catch up to the fight, finally getting up beside Makoa.

Next Up: Urza, Native #4, Douena, Makoa, Native #2, Mahjik, Aakif, Lorenz.

confirm crit: to hit 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Claw: damage 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

#2 dodges the first of Urza's claws, but is unprepared for the second which strikes him across the side of the face. The claw rips down over his ear and neck. The native topples to the ground. (The critical was a success.)

ROUND 5

#4 seems to go mad with rage as he wildly swings at Soulwind.

Native #4 scimitar on Soulwind: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4; miss chance due to dim light: 1d100 ⇒ 47

His madness is clearly blinding him, however, as he comes nowhere near hitting the horse.

I have realized I neglected to check the miss chance for #2's earlier attack on Soulwind. I'll do that now: 1d100 ⇒ 55. The hit remains unchanged.

Next Up:Douena, Makoa, Native #4, Mahjik, Aakif, Lorenz, Urza.

Yay for wolf-child instincts!

Makoa hears a crack as the native's neck breaks from Makoa's savage attack. The body goes limp and topples to the ground as Makoa lets go.

Awww, dammit

Male Human (Andoran) Fighter Lvl 5

Lorenz hurries forward, intending to drop his bow and draw his rapier as he charged the last remaining enemy. Instead, he saw Makoa rush up and snap his sharp teeth onto the man's body and shake him like a rag doll, the crack of the breaking spine echoing in the night.

Lorenz drew up and reared back a little with a frown of disgust. "Ugh. That's just nasty, Makoa."

He turned around to ensure there were no more enemies lurking nearby.

Male Half-Orc Barbarian(Totem Warrior/Invulnerable Rager) : 2 Druid(Wolf Shaman) : 4

Makoa shudders as he forces his lupine instincts back down and his fury drains away. He uses his water skin to wash the blood from his face.

"Haven't stopped acting for a long time. Brings back some memories, that's for sure.."

Just link to this roll next time we're in combat. Maybe the DM will be nice and let you use it. :)

Douena skids to a stop in the sand as she sees Makoa finish the fight. "Are they all dead?" She approaches one of the prone bodies cautiously. "We could stay here and use their campfire for the night, but I'd rather not have them anywhere nearby."

Douena Trestleben wrote:

#4, the one with the broken neck, is actually still alive, but he expires within moments after Douena reaches him. #3 is dead already. #2 is dying, and #1 is alive and has stabilized.

Male Human (Andoran) Fighter Lvl 5

"That one over there seems to be breathing still." Lorenz points out an unconscious, blood-covered figure whose chest is still rising and falling, albeit a little shakily.

Bad guy #1.

"It does make sense to take advantage of the fire."

Female Gnome Cleric 4/ Rogue (burglar) 3

Douena hesitates over the body. "What should we do with him?" she asks. "If he makes it back to his friends, he'll be able to tell them about us. Then I think they won't rest until they've hunted us down." She considers a moment. "We could take him back and lock him up with the pygmies -- let them fight it out amongst themselves," she offers dubiously.

Male Half-Orc Barbarian(Totem Warrior/Invulnerable Rager) : 2 Druid(Wolf Shaman) : 4

"2 gold on the pygmies to win." Makoa says as he spits out a bit of skin that was caught in his teeth.

Male Human (Andoran) Fighter Lvl 5

Lorenz stares pensively down at the unconscious form as he fingers his rapier's hilt, but he says nothing.

The natives have very few belongings. They each have a light wooden shield and a broken scimitar and each is wearing a red pearl amulet. There's a small pile of extra javelins off to the side of the camp. Including the ones the natives were carrying, there are 12 javelins altogether. Near the fire, there's the remains of a meal.

Male Human (Andoran) Fighter Lvl 5

Remains of their meal? Dare I ask?

Lorenz takes one of the amulets and leaves the rest. He wanders over toward the fire and glances at the meal remains, curious as to whether there was anything left worth munching on.

Just a few bones that have been pretty thoroughly stripped of their meat.

They don't look like humanoid bones, if that's what you're worried about. :)

Male Human (Andoran) Fighter Lvl 5

Whew!

Lorenz glances at the bones and turns away in disappointment. "Hey, Makoa, they left you some bones to gnaw on."

Stepping away from the remains, he drops to the ground in front of the fire, staring silently into the flames.

"I don't think we have the resources to keep a prisoner/hostage around. It is likely that all we have managed to do is buy us time. Maybe 3 or 4 days? The rest will come looking for these, and they'll find our traces all over. Also it would be unnecessarily cruel to let pygmies and this one fight it out amongst themselves. I think we should kill him before he can regain consciousness - the less unnecessary suffering, the better."

Mahjik looks a bit sullen, lost in thought. He snaps out of it a few seconds later, "Shall we remain at the camp though? It's already set up. We can return to the others in the morning and then prepare a second major expedition to the fungus rock."

Female Gnome Cleric 4/ Rogue (burglar) 3

"We have to assume they'll be missed sometime," Douena agrees with Mahjik. "When we leave in the morning, we ought to walk a ways in the water so they can't follow our footprints so easily." She looks up at the overcast sky and sighs. "Well, the stars are up there somewhere. If we're staying here, I'm going to go have a chat with Desna." She moves down near the water's edge to commune with her deity.

Douena has 1 channel and a cure light left, if anyone needs them before she renews her spells. Channel Positive Energy 1d6 ⇒ 4 Cure Light Wounds 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6

It there are no objections, Mahjik will claim the cure-light. It would be enough (along with the channel and a night's rest) to fully recover his HP.

Sorry, Mahjik, just realized her remaining level-1 spell was a domain spell, which can't be spontaneously converted. You're still 6 HP down. But assuming she got her uninterrupted hour with Desna, she can channel again afterwards to top you off.

Jask Fortitude: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15

Soulwind has successfully fought off the disease without ever showing any signs of it. Jask has made his first save and isn't yet showing signs (not that you're there to be able to tell, anyway). He needs one more save to recover, however. Urza has contracted something, but it will be a couple days before it manifests. For now, he is unaware of any problem.

Lorenz will take first watch. He'll also pull out some hard rations from his pack he'd bought for the voyage and munch it miserably while everyone else is asleep.

I'm just going to go ahead and assume a watch order (you guys are never particularly quick to come up with watch orders). Lorenz has requested first, so I'll put him there. Makoa has requested a watch with Douena. If everyone else does single watches, that will be five watches. At 2 hours each, everyone will get their 8 hours of sleep (with a bit of a sleep-in in the morning. So, order is: Lorenz, Aakif, Mahjik, Makoa/Douena, Urza.

As for food, I think people are going to be rather hungry in the morning... :)

What have you decided to do about native #1, who is still alive (#2 was a live for a little while, but died a minute or so after the battle)?

After the battle is over and you settle down by the natives' campfire, things calm down nicely for several hours. The night is quiet, with only the sounds of the water washing up on the shore. Occasionally, a bit of rain falls, but nothing untoward happens for the first few watches.

Makoa and Douena's watch starts out just as quiet. About half an hour in, however, they notice a couple of flappybites fly over the camp. This is a bit unusual, but not completely unheard of (dimorphodons aren't generally nocturnal, but you have occasionally seen a few flying over at night), so at first, you pay it little mind. However, not long later, they pass overhead again. And then again. At first, you're not sure if it's the same ones or different ones, but it soon becomes apparent that there are about four of them total, and they seem to be circling the camp, coming briefly into your range of vision, then passing outside, then back again.
