Yo Peeps--

Heads up that I'll be AFK from April 8th to 19th. Going to Cuba on a Culture, Economics, and Technology junket with a board that I used to be on. More info here.

Feel free to play or GMPC my <insert yahoo's name here> for all the fun and laughs you can muster. Online access in Cuba is very rare and usually dial-up speeds so I won't be able to post much, but hope to read along when I can.

I hope to be back to posting on the 20th or so, given that I have a long trip home and will need some recovery time.

Signed,

Brood really won't be happy unless the name of the ship is brazenly violent, like him. Slipping Besmara into the name of the vessel would also get him on board (heh heh, oh ship puns), but it's not something he'd volunteer or suggest.

But, I'm also not one to be a stick in the mud (neither is Brood) to squabble over it or drag it out. =)

Also, you would have had time to try to gain some infamy, though we all forgot about it:

To gain Infamy, the PCs must moor their ship at a port for 1 full day, and the PC determined by the group to be its main storyteller must spend this time on shore carousing and boasting of infamous deeds. This PC must make either a Bluff, Intimidate, or Perform check to gauge the effectiveness of her recounting or embellishing. The DC of this check is equal to 15 + twice the group’s average party level (APL), and the check is referred to as an Infamy check. If the character succeeds at this check, the group’s Infamy and Disrepute both increase by +1 (so long as neither score is already at its maximum amount). If the result exceeds the DC by +5, the group’s Infamy and Disrepute increase by +2; if the result exceeds the DC by +10, both scores increase by +3. The most a party’s Infamy and Disrepute scores can ever increase as a result of a single Infamy check is by 3 points. If the PC fails the Infamy check, there is no change in her group’s Infamy score and the day has been wasted.

And only Cargas has leveled his character.

Oh, and don't forget I'll still be posting sporadically through Sunday.

Having neither the natural charisma nor the aptitude for story or boast, Cargas is not a good candidate for explaining the notorious deeds that will be attributed to the Dread Capt'n Budos and his wallowing gang of lagabouts.

2/3 crew on day watches, 1/3 on night. At night, at least two on lookout, 1 of ours and 1 leftover from Plugg.

I'm not sure I'm understanding this. Sorry for the slowdown, but at the risk of giving the next bit away, I need to know the info before we can continue.

You want two-thirds of the crew working during the day? And one-third at night (when typically the ship is allowed to float freely/anchored)?

Also, at least two on lookout doesn't really tell me much. The only new info I have there is you're not going to have one person on, but you could have 2 or you could have 22... :)

I guess I need to know how many crew members we have. Do you have a breakdown?

EDIT: just checked the game tab and saw we have 23 crew. I'd say 5 on nightwatch, 18 on days. Of the five three ought to be ours or neutrals and no more than 2 of Plugg's cronies at a go. 1 in each crow's nest, 1 at the wheel, just in case and the rest on general watch.

I realized my crew list on the game tab was incorrect, including a couple dead sailors and at least one who stayed on the Wormwood.

The new list is updated. I've used * to indicate sailors who were friendly to you pre-mutiny, ^ to indicate sailors who hadn't really taken a side, and - to indicate sailors who were aligned with Plugg and Scourge, pre-mutiny.

Anyway, so you actually have 22 crew, along with you five officers. Not sure if you wanted to include Fishguts as regular crew. He clearly wasn't on the Wormwood.

While you can change roles, obviously, don't forget you may eventually get siege engines too. That'll require an Exotic Weapon Proficiency and -- possibly -- Knowledge (engineering) for indirect fire weapons, such as catapults.

Also, ship to ship combat is detailed in the player's guide if you want a refresher.

Meh. I prefer to hide overt modifiers like this because I don't believe in discussing them beforehand and making RP decisions based off them. If it's Cargas' job to sail the damn ship, he'll do that, but I think he's the bosun in charge of bosunnning, whatever that entails.

If the Capt'n assigns Cargas to tiller, Cargas will do his best.

There is a practicality in gaming sense to knowing a PCs relative skill level. The party should never send Ol' Two Left Feet Butter Thumbs to climb the stone tower while McGrippy Spidertoes watches from below, they would have the sense to send the guy in the party who was better at climbing. Likewise, and even more so, we don't want Crashy Reeffinder driving the boat (our floating home) while Besmarason Andretti watches. If Cargas can drive better than he cooks then maybe he gets the wheel, but let's assume that Brood or Nim push him aside if it becomes obvious that he's still working on his learner's permit.

Also, everyone feel free to set a course of action for the party as we would in a normal campaign that didn't have a role of 'captain' for one PC, you're all officers on the MM and that gives you authoritah!

Cargas is being a tart. Just give the crew a Battle of the Network Stars, flesh out skills, or presumed to have done so, now that we're getting serious, and assign tasks on demonstrated merits.

As noted, I'm not 100 percent sure how much ship-to-ship combat we'll do. On one hand, I think it should be a fun part of this campaign. On the other, I suspect that like mass combat, it's a little unwieldy/unsatisfying in PBP, but let's play it out and see what happens.

My feeling is that your goal will generally be to close to combat so you can grapple and board (or perhaps escape suffering that same fate). My feeling is regardless of who's piloting the ship, whoever is first to log on when your group is up should just post the actions and rolls for the pilot and whoever's aiding (it's easy enough to see Brood's rolls, for example, and Nim's if you want to keep him doing the aid, or have your own character aid).

In the meantime, you can also of course post what you're doing as you close -- casting spells or whatever in preparation for combat.

I'll try to post an Upper Hand check when I adjudicate, so you can roll as needed and see who has the upper hand for the next round...

Again, the rules are in the Player's Guide (starting on Page 8), so you can all follow along at home.

As always, let me know if there are questions. Also, PLEASE weigh in as we go so I know whether you enjoy this aspect or not. This first one will be a little slower since I'm about to leave town in the middle of it, but I think this is the best way to try to make it work and be fun.

Yes and no, Budos. There is a huge difference between asking for modifiers and each of us to lay their genitalia on the table and measuring, and RPing watching each of us on the ship and seeing what we know. I think, to date, we've had active control of the MM for 3 days at sea.

When you've assigned Cargas to the helm for a few weeks, you'll see what he can do. But, in my mind, Cargas hasn't been on the wheel that often in the past 3 days.

However, I see the point that I'm just being an ass by not laying out my modifier and metagaming the entire thing. I get that...but I hope and think PbP is different/better.

I hope you don't think that about metagaming, it is hard to avoid and should be for RPG sake. RPGs are also about character building and skills are a big part of that, so I would also hope that a PC gets to use a skill they've invested in heavily. Maybe PbP can be better, I could see the hidden modifier working for many skills, or even just a list of trained skills without numbers. I don't think it would take a few weeks to realize someone doesn't know a profession like sailing. One wrong turn of the wheel and three sailors just got flung from the rigging into the waves. I'd be cool sitting down with you and creating 'PLs PbP Playing Skills Guide', but let's work out a good middle ground before Cargas sinks the ship. Maybe we start with something simple like just knowing which of the skills the PC is trained in that can't be used untrained. Most important of all, no one should be laying their genitalia on the table, for measuring or otherwise, and now I feel like I need to bring clorox wipes to PaizoCon this year.

From the Murder's stats in the campaign tab: Maximum Speed 90 ft. (wind); Acceleration 30 ft.

And, yes, that's correct, Budos. Thanks to the vagaries of the dice roller, you other overshot them in your pursuit or something along those lines (perhaps they executed a hard turn to cut back against the direction you both were going...).
