DM Mothman |
Eljoy Skinner |
"As long as it's on the way. Dozens could die if we take to long on this search," Eljoy is sardonic, then his tone changes. "It could be bait for another trap. Keep sharp."
Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 5
DM Mothman |
Anor leads the way forward, and soon the keening of the injured fox can be heard by all. After walking for several more minutes, the group finds themselves at the edge of a large clearing, bordered to the north by a forest shrouded lake, its blue waters choppy in the wind, its far edge lost to the horizon.
Not far from the edge of the lake, a fox with large ears and bright orange fur lies bleeding, its hindquarters caught in the jaws of a crude iron trap.
Whilst Anor may have expected to see Razorcrows attacking the distressed fox, or waiting nearby for it to die, none of the birds are in clear evidence at a casual glance.
1d20 + 10 ⇒ (5) + 10 = 15
1d20 + 14 ⇒ (19) + 14 = 33
Anor |
Anor moves towards the fox to help it. Wary of any attack. As she does so she says "My Hawk senses danger over there," she points at some trees 60 or 70 feet away to the east, towards the lake, "It may be nothing, or just something that would scare a bird, but could one of the fighters go have a look?"
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23 How do I get the fox out of the trap?
Heal: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18How badly injured if the fox?
Eljoy Skinner |
"Probably nothing," Eljoy grumbles. He slides his pack from his shoulders and drops it to the ground. His axe returns to his shoulder in its normal position with the handle nearly horizontal and his hand just counterbalancing the weight of the axe's head. He walks a few steps to put himself to the east of the party.
He glances over at Adalwin. "You want to gear up for this, or do it fast?"
The last question assumes Adalwin has been sans armor for travel speed.
Jasper Eleventoes |
Jasper moves forward with Anor, sliding off of Percival's saddle to lead the mule.
Reekis-bot checks his crossbow and moves to follow Eljoy, pausing as they look back at Adalwin.
Eljoy Skinner |
Eljoy stares at the younger man, then nods. He drops the head of his axe to the ground and leans the haft on his thigh. Then he adjusts his shield, scratches his left armpit, and spits. Finally he hefts his axe in his right hand and begins to march toward Anor's copse of trees.
Nice RP. I hope we don't get Adalwin killed because of it.
DM Mothman |
As Anor begins walking over towards the injured fox (which continues its keening cry) and Eljoy and Adalwin unlimber their weapons and shields and start moving towards the tree that Anor indicated, two things happen. First, there is a raucous cawing and the beating of wings from the tree that Anor indicated, as two black birds – slightly larger than a typical raven, and with long, jagged beaks – take to the air and begin flying in your direction. A moment later, there is the ~twang~ of a bow string, and a broad headed arrow flies out from somewhere in the vicinity of where the razorcrows emerged from. The arrow strikes Eljoy, a glancing hit to his side that deflects harmlessly off his metal scale armour.

Map.
Choose a position for your character. Everyone should be somewhere within J-N, 9-13. The fox is marked on the maps, the razorcrows emerged from a tree in V6. The green is forest – difficult terrain that provides concealment to foes (or allies) greater than 10 feet away. The white is relatively open ground. The blue is water.
Jasper Eleventoes |
Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Jasper is leading Percival and should be a square or two behind Anor when she gets placed on the map as he was following her toward the fox. Feel free to place him accordingly if I don't get back to do it myself.
Jasper still has a flask of acid in hand after the discovery of the pit earlier.
Reekis-bot intended to follow the armored fighters and keep to the cover of the trees as much as possible. As such, he's in N11 to begin.
Reekis Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
Oliver Hoffman |
Sorry for my long bouts of silence
Oliver is quiet during the ride, as every time he takes an intake of breath to speak, he sets himself to coughing. Mostly he sticks to nods and waves, nodding when Adalwin asks if he is okay, waving in greeting to both the 'pets' and nodding with Jasper's assessment of wanting to get more time to speak with and meet them proper.
Initiative 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (11) - 1 = 10
As Anor moves toward the injured animal, Oliver follows Jasper in following the woman, also to see what he can do to help. Given his current state, he isn't likely to have been much help in the way of helping scout the potential danger.
Put Oliver in L12
Eljoy Skinner |
Initiative: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15 Start him in P12.
"SON OF A B%@*!!" Eljoy roars. He starts pressing northward through the brush. "Ady, keep to the woods. I'll flush the bastard to you."
DM Mothman |
Initiative Table
Razorcrows: 18
Reekis: 16
Anor: 15+
Eljoy: 15
Archer: 14
Jasper: 11+
Adalwin: 11
Oliver: 10
Let me know if I’ve missed anything on the initiative table or the map. I assume Oliver is still mounted. The Razorcrows are represented by ‘R1’ and ‘R2’ and are flying at about 30 feet elevation. The exact position of the archer is not yet clear. Lightning (Anor’s familiar) can act in the surprise round (the crows and the archer already have), and then we are to the top of round 1. Someone please take Reekis’ turn when it is up to him in Aubrey’s absence.
Lightning.
DM Mothman |
The razorcrows caw loudly as they flap above the clearing. Then both dive, one towards Anor, one towards Jasper, attempting to peck at eyes, faces, throats with their sharp, jagged beaks.
The razorcrows are effectively charging. Due to their size they need to enter their opponents’ squares in order to attack, but as Anor and Jasper are flat footed before their initiative in round 1 I don’t believe they get AoOs.
R1 vs Anor (flat footed) 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12 ; Damage: 1d4 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0 (min. 1)
R2 vs Jasper (flat footed) 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26 ; Damage: 1d4 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1 (min. 1)
EDIT - R1 is now sharing Anor's space and R2 shares Jasper's space, so I'll move them off the map for now.
Anor |
Rekis will take his time to load his crossbow and move slightly into the clearing.
Move to P6 while loading crossbow...
Anor appears to just step back, but she whispers something under her breath at the razorclaw attacking her.
"Cast" miss-fortune on the razorclaw attacking her, and take a step backwards. Draw a dagger as a move action.
Eljoy Skinner |
Eljoy crashes out of the woods into the clearing. His legs pump like pistons as he charges forward behind his shield, ax swinging in his other hand.
"Let's see you now!"
Double move to V5.
DM Mothman |
Another arrow flies down at Eljoy from a steep angle as he reaches the eastern edge of the clearing.
arrow attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23 ; Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 5
Eljoy Skinner |
Eljoy howls when the arrow strikes, but it only seems to make him mad. He screams up into the tree.
"You're treed now, damn your eyes. You're done and I'll make your birds into pies."
9/14 hp remain
Jasper Eleventoes |
Not that it really matters, but I had Reekis-bot load his crossbow earlier.
Jasper drops Percival's reins to the ground and steps back to L9 as he reaches into a pouch for a pinch of colored sand. He casts a spell and a rainbow of colors wash over the two birds that had attacked he and Anor.
Will DC 14 or suffer the effects, foul fowl!
Oliver Hoffman |
Oliver gasps with the onset of the attack, and sets to coughing. Trying to get down off of the second mule, his cough disrupts him more than his general awkwardness does, and he ends up having to climb down off the creature. But once he's on the ground he takes a half step forward and brings the end of his spear, or more accurately his glorified walking stick, and tries to jab the bird attacking Jasper.
Move, dismount into L11
Free, 5' step to L10
Standard, attack R2 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10, doubt that hits, but here's damage JIC 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Adalwin MacFaine |
Seeing Oliver moving to help Jasper, Adalwin strides towards Anor and chops at the razorcrow with his bastard sword, striking the bird squarely between the wings, sending a spray of feathers and blood into the air.
'I got one!" Adalwin yells excitedly, the success of the attack temporarily removing the boy from the seriousness of the situation
Adalwin moves to N7 and attacks
[ooc] attack 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
confirm critical 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
damage 2d10 + 6 ⇒ (8, 6) + 6 = 20
DM Mothman |
Both of the attacking razorcrows are caught in the sudden spray of bright colours from Jasper's outstretched hands. They plummet to the ground, stunned or unconscious.
Adalwin, you are welcome to move over and chop one of the birds in half anyway as per your action, but they won't be hurting anyone for at least a couple of rounds. If you'd like to change your action you are welcome.
We can also go back to the top of the round for Round 2. With the birds out of action it is Reekes, Anor and Eljoy.
Jasper Eleventoes |
Reekis-bot
Reekis moves along the edge of the trees, keeping to cover and looking for the archer in the tree that Eljoy may start chopping down any moment.
Half-speed for maximum stealth
Stealth: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
PS: Did Oliver's attack hit a stunned/unconscious R2?
