As the two boats approach, Firyin and Griswald jump to the other boat at about the same time as a bunch of men from the other boat jump on the Black Mist.

Some that didn't jump yet, redirect their attention to the two heroes and stay on their boat.

There's a lot of shouting going on, a mix of war cries and orders.

Nivel's shot leaves one of the enemies gasping for breath as the arrow pierces his lung and he falls down ('pirate1' is knocked out).

With the help of Ewem, Merkava has kept aiming the ballista and now at close distance he fires it. It's a hit! The bolt pierces squarely through a man's stomach, taking him out. 1d20 ⇒ 14 dmg: 3d8 ⇒ (2, 3, 3) = 8 target: 1d12 ⇒ 3 ('pirate3' is knocked out)

Morg shoots his readied crossbow at the closest target and his bolt hits one of them through the shoulder. 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16 dmg: 1d8 ⇒ 8

Merkava moves in front of his comrades, taking out his axe, while Kyra runs to defend Captain Walren.

COMBAT ROUND 2 - see map The two boats are now too far from each other to jump on another one.

On the Black Mist, Kyra and a 'pirate' exchange blows. (Kyra:5 dmg, 'pirate2':6 dmg)

Merkava's opponent, who was already hurt by Morg's arrow, cuts him in the left arm but the fighter, holding his axe in both hands, ripostes with a heavy blow, making a deep cut in the man's side and he falls down unconscious. (Merkava:4 dmg, 'pirate6':knocked out)

Another one charges the hero and his sword cuts Merkava's shoulder. (Merkava:5 dmg, total 9 dmg)

Morg misses his next shot but Nivel hits the new enemy fighting his friend, with an arrow to the chest. ('pirate5':5 dmg)

The fourth 'pirate' who jumped on the Black Mist runs towards Nivel.

On the other boat, Firyin creates darkness around him while transforming into his bear shape and this immediately causes panic, terrifying those close to him, who run away. He slashes at one of them and Griswald, in his beast form, does the same, which takes out another opponent. ('pirate7':knocked out, 'pirate8':7 dmg + bleeding)

Because of the darkness and rolling 20, the enemies close to Firyin are frightened instead of shaken. The two others further away are shaken and don't dare to attack.

The man behind the wheel looks like the only one who isn't scared yet. He just shouts: "What the... !" and looks unsure about what to do.

One of the 'pirates' is bleeding and will soon lose consciousness. ('pirate':2 dmg, total 9 dmg)

Kyra's blade pierces her opponent's heart and he falls down unconscious. ('pirate2' is knocked out)

This time Morg's bolt hits and right before the heavily wounded 'pirate' still tries to attack Merkava, the fighter's axe cuts deep through his chest and he's killed on the spot. ('pirate5' is dead)

The last enemy on the Black Mist cuts a wound on Nivel's left leg and the ranger takes a step back to fire an arrow which leaves a scar along the enemy's right cheek. The 'pirate' looks around and notices how his comrades have fallen and then runs towards the middle of the ship while taking out a flask from under his cloths. Merkava runs after him. (Nivel:5 dmg, 'pirate4':2 dmg)

Meanwhile on the other boat, Firyin and Griswald emerge out of the darkness and charge towards their enemies who are taking a step back while keeping their swords readied.

Seeing the beasts, the Captain says, as in disbelief: "Those.. are werewolves!"

The 'pirates' strike at the heroes and only Griswald gets hit before both of them claw ferociously at their targets. Firyin's opponent crumbles down due to heavy blood loss and the other one screams in pain, as he can barely keep standing. (Griswald:7 dmg, pirate10:8 dmg + 3 dmg from bleeding, pirate11:10 dmg)

Another 'pirate' falls unconscious due to blood loss and the last one, in panic, jumps into the sea.

The leader takes a step back and his face expresses both fear and determination.

Griswald, not to be the BEARer* of bad news, but if you're attacking with claws and a bite in the same turn the claws count as offhand natural attacks which mean they both come with a -5 penalty. If you want to lower the penalty you need the feat multiattack.

Both my claws and bite are considered primary natural attacks. If I attacked with a weapon and a natural attack then the natural attack would be considered secondary.

COMBAT ROUND 4 - see map

The last enemy on the Black Mist quickly steps back and throws his flask in Merkava's direction. It hits the floor in front of him and causes a sudden burst of fire. (Merkava:1dmg, deck is burning)

Morg's bolt hits and Kyra deals the finishing blow to the cornered 'pirate', who falls down unconscious. (all enemies on the Black Mist are knocked out, one is dead)

Captain Walren shouts: "Ewem, put out the fire!" While the assistant runs to get a basket and fill it with water, the Captain turns the boat around in pursuit of the other one.

Firyin quickly moves towards the 'pirate' leader who, after first being hesitant about what to do, now turns into a furious assault. Firyin deals a solid blow to the ribs but it appears this guy is in a whole different category as the rest as he counter attacks the bear-elf twice with well placed slices of his longsword. (Firyin:12+13=25 dmg, leader:8+3 bleeding = 11 dmg)

Griswald puts down the last enemy between him and the captain and then moves behind him. (The leader did a 5ft step to avoid staying within close distance of Griswald.)

Hmm sorry, I totally forgot about Nivel's action. In order of initiative, it's Nivel's arrow which would have normally downed the pirate on the Black Mist after Morg hits him first and Kyra and Merkava don't need to strike.

The two boats have been moving away from each other in opposite directions for 3 rounds and are now at 200 ft. As long as no one is steering the other boat and trying to get away from you, you could manage to catch up. It will take about 1 minute in the current condition. So each round you will gain 20 ft.

Let's say that Nivel delayed his attack by first looking around to judge the situation. Then he realizes he can try to hit the captain on the other boat. Shortbow range is 60ft. At 200ft this means -6 penalty for distance. The arrow hits but doesn't penetrate the enemy's armor.

COMBAT ROUND 5 - see map

As the Black Mist sets course to catch up with the 'pirate' vessel, the battle rages on between the leader and the two 'beasts'.

As Firyin and Griswald tear at the man's flesh and Nivel's arrow hits him firmly in the back, he utters a last war cry in desperation and strikes back at his opponents. ('pirate leader':8+10+8+6 dmg, total:11+32=43; Griswald:13 dmg, total:20 dmg)

He replies to Griswald: "What.. do you mean?", but he will not be able to hear the answer, because right after dealing a deadly blow to Firyin, the blood loss takes its toll and he falls down unconscious. (Firyin:13 dmg, total:38 dmg; 'pirate leader':9 dmg, total:52 dmg, bleeding:4 dmg, total 56)

This ends the battle! Congratulations! Everybody gets 600 xp.

You can decide what to do with all the knocked out 'pirates'. Most of them are still barely alive. One of them, in panic, has jumped into the sea, but is already too far to be able to simply climb back on board of the 'pirate vessel'.

Assuming that Firyin can be aided by the time we catch up, Nivel will ask that Kyra heal him. He will then ask her to stabilize the pirates that can be saved.

Once that has been accomplished Nivel will ask Kyra to question one of the "pirates" while he goes off to search the "pirate vessel", hoping to learn more about who they were, what they wanted, and why they decided to attack.

I'm assuming that both ships are not attached for anyone to go back and forth.

The two boats are slowly getting closer.

The 'pirate leader' is bleeding and will die soon if not helped by Griswald. The Black Mist is yet too far away for Kyra to jump on.

In reply to Kyra, Captain Walren thinks for a moment and says: "We could use some grappling hooks if we are going to make sure to stay side by side with the other boat. Ewem.. I think we still have two hooks in the storage room!" As Ewem goes to fetch them, the Captain continues: "Well you could take one of the hooks and make sure they are firmly attached to rope and then throw them to connect us with the other boat."

Nivel suggested to save the dying enemies, but I still want to know if others agree with this or not. If you will keep them alive, I assume you will tie them up after making sure they are at least stable.

If I can't get to the other boat then yes, that will be what I am trying to do in the meantime. Might as well just in case the one in the water doesn't make it or if we do not get to the captain in time.

On the Black Mist, two 'pirates' are unconscious and stable. One was already dead during the battle and one died shortly after the fight.

On the 'pirate vessel', Griswald manages to stop the bleeding on the leader and he becomes stable a bit later. Three more have died there after the battle.

In total there are 6 unconscious 'pirates', including the leader, and one other swimming in the sea..

The Black Mist has now caught up with the other vessel and the two have been attached to each other with the grappling hooks.

I assume you will search the boat and the enemies, so to speed up play, I will give the result right away.

You discover a small lockbox in what looks like the captain's cabin. The leader has the key hanging on his belt. Inside is a bag containing
13 pp, 28 gp, and 16 sp, and a document, which reads like a charter giving permission to attack vessels near Tamran, signed by the Molthuni governor.

You think that the sword and armor from the 'pirate leader' are probably magically enchanted. Thanks to your previous experience with magical items and the presence of a wizard, you are able to determine them as a +1 longsword and +1 studded leather armor.

The other 'pirates' carry normal longswords and wear normal leather armor. On the bodies, you find 1 potion of cure moderate wounds, 4 potions of cure light wounds and 6 flasks of alchemist fire.

You are just a few hours away from Tamran now.

I would move up an encumbrance level but if no one else wants the +1 studded leather I could use it.

Could we tow this boat in with us? With this evidence I'm sure the people of Tamran would be interested in these men and what they might have to say. If anyone wishes to question the men Nivel will give way and let them do so.
