DM Luke |
Before I go and do something stupid, let me make sure I have my facts straight. Climb is a move. I move at one quarter my speed once I actually reach the wall. Roof is 15-20' high? This means it takes 2-3 climb rolls to sucessfully reach the roof at which I'm at a -2 for my armor check penalty unless I drop my shield and then I'm at a -1? Close?
Sounds right. This means you could use a move action to get to the building in question. Another to move action to climb. Just make the roll once and we'll let you cover the climb in one action. I remembered the climb rate to be 1/2 your speed, but you may be right with the 1/4. There's also a fall associated with missing your climb check by 5 or more (or roll a natural 1).
DM Luke |
Brenin stands on a barrel and tries to jump to a handhold along the eaves. Of course they crumble in his hands, sending the ranger to a wrenching fall into rubbish. 4 pts of damage. Suppressed giggles come from a pair of street scamps hiding in the trash on the other side of the road.
Badeye is clearly tempted to swing at Lia's darting form, but his discipline overrules and he focuses on the likelier melee threat, Trystan. His first real swing underestimates smaller man's quickness and misses cleanly. Still, you get a clear impression of the harm that weapon's likely to do if it hits someone.
Gars does not apparently track Isegrim rounding the corner. He reloads his crossbow and takes aim for Lia, despite the cover she receives. His bolt thwacks loudly into a ramshackle box that spills refuse into Badeye's fighting space. The half orc growls.
"Mind your aim boy or I'll gut you when I'm done with these!"
The thug at (15,12) takes advantage of the half-orc's battlefield presence to land a painful jab at Trystan's hip. Trystan can feel warm blood flowing freely down his side. 8 hp of damage.
The second thug is not so lucky with his half-hearted swipe at the witch.
Lia's turn.
DM Luke |
Brenin, here's a chance at possible redemption, make a perception roll.
DM Luke |
Two things actually. First, among the trash you've so gracefully scattered into the street you see a slashed green cloak with ominous and relatively fresh bloodstains on it. Second, you hear someone fiddling with locks and chains at the backdoor of the moneylender's house - on the inside.
DM Luke |
Brenin, it certainly could be. It looks like one he wore alot.
Not so easy to tumble around a trained fighter. Lia's move provokes an attack of opportunity.
Badeye must have been keeping his good eye out, because he spots Lia darting along the wall and connects with a back-handed swipe of his ugly weapon. 5 hp of damage. That carries Lia to (14,14) with her move action. You still have a standard action.
Here's the initiative sequence re-posted since we crossed pages:
Badeye the half-orc 23
Gars Smythe 18
human thugs 14
Lia 10
Rees 7
Isegrim 6
Trystan 5
Brenin 1
Rees |
I move behind Trystan to give myself some room.(12,17) Hey Badeye, don't you think you could use that muscle for something better... i start waving my hands around both casting my spell and trying to draw his attention to me.
Ray of Enfeeblement 17+3=20 Mr d6 is 4 not sure if I get +1 to that or not.
DM Luke |
Lia buries her blade into Badeye's shoulder, causing him to twist away in pain. Rees's malignant red ray strikes him in the chest, draining away his strength. (failed save)
Edit: Badeye received +4 AC cover (for being in melee combat)against that ray, but was still hit.
Uber blade-meister is up.
Isegrim |
Having heard his friends call out, and seeing the man in (7,14) with crossbow in-hand, a primal protective instinct takes over Isegrim and he charges directly at the attacker. Power Attack and +2 for the charge and Isegrim takes -2 to AC until his next turn..he ends up in (7,13)
Attack
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Damage
2d6 + 7 ⇒ (5, 6) + 7 = 18
DM Luke |
Heh, there's a pile of math involved in getting to that +7, but I got there too!
Gars spots the charging fighter and times a duck that saves his life.
Brother of the Mug...
Trystan Glenfauran |
Trystan reaches back to feel his wound and realizes he is protecting Rees. He hastily casts bless on himself and the girls.
"If we can just get the orc-kin down, the tide will turn" he thinks to himself.
He chooses to ignore his attacker and instead seizes the opportunity to strike Badeye from a flank.
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18
1d6 ⇒ 3
DM Luke |
Trystan, that's two standard actions unless there's a trait in play or something. Casting and attacking. On of those needs to be a move or move-equivalent action.
Brenin, the back door is at (23,16), and there's piled up boxes and assorted refuse to allow you a stealth roll if you like.
Brenin Grazier |
I move to 23,15 drawing my longsword. Stealth check to hide is 16+5=21. I want to hold my attack until something presents itself. My intention will be to gain the door and keep it from being locked again.
As I move into place, I give the vagabonds across the way a look to let them know they should move on. Bluff is 3+0=3.
Isegrim |

with that Bluff I think you just told them there was free booze and women up on the roof and to come on over
DM Luke |
Trystan finds a crease in the reinforced leather breastplate, wetting the first two-inches of his blade. The half-orc is battle-mad at this point and is evidently going to fight to the death.
Around back, Brenin doesn't have long to wait. The last chain is released and the back door swings open. A heavy set man in a greasy brown coat and hat backs out the door and fumbles with a key ring.
In game terms Brenin has readied an attack against a person coming out the door. Brenin may take his action now.
Updated init is...
Brenin 25
Back door man 24
Badeye the half-orc 23
Gars Smythe 18
human thugs 14
Lia 10
Rees 7
Isegrim 6
Trystan 5
Brenin Grazier |
Irate at the fact that Larur has probably been murdered and his companions are being attacked out front, Brenin doesn't hesitate to run the man through...innocent or guilty, death is coming.
11+3=14 (is he considered flat footed or how is his ac affected when he doesn't know it's coming?). Damage is 5+2=7.
"Thanks for opening the door friend."
DM Luke |
Brenin's stab is partly turned by leather armor concealed under the cloak. The man curses in pain as the ranger's weapon bites into his ribs. He drops his keys and some books he was carrying and backs away (into the street). He draws a scimitar of his own.
Gars shies away from the menacing fighter, discarding his crossbow in the process. He draws a short sword. "Badeye!" he calls in partial panic.
The half-orc doesn't seem to be in the mood to take orders, though. He slides away from the thief at his back and aims another killer blow at our good bartender. Trystan is able to dodge the blow from the half-orc, but is hit again by a thug at his back. Trystan loses consciousness. 7 hp of damage. I have Trystan at -4 hp.
The second thug tries to cover Badeye's 'blind-side' by attacking Lia. His clumsy attack misses.
Lis'a turn.
DM Luke |
Sorry Brenin, I didn't really answer your question. Yep he was flat-footed until he acted.
Lia Smythe |
Come on dice, give me something heroic!
Lia panics. "Isegrim," she yells to the big fighter, "help!" She is afraid for Trystan and ignores the human to pummel the half-orc.
I take a five foot step to (15, 14), flanking Badeye again. I take a swipe at him with my rapier. I roll 6 + 2 (flanking) + 4 for a grand total of 10. Yeah, take that you nasty beast! I don't think my dice got the message....
DM Luke |
How about a round of applause for the lady that teaches my children math! Twelve doesn't hit either.
Witchy woman...
Isegrim |
Isegrim turns and sees the thug sliding his sword from Trystan's limp form. His vision seems to take on a red tint.. everything blurring except for his chosen target of revenge. His pack-brother has been harmed.. blood must flow. With a swiftness belied by his bulk, Isegrim charges to (15,11) and takes the mightiest of swings..whether to save or to avenge, the purpose is the same.. to remove head from shoulder, limb from torso, heart from chest.
Now let's hope the roll lives up to all that :) Power attack, charge, etc.. same math as last time...-2AC until my next turn
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
damage
2d6 + 7 ⇒ (5, 3) + 7 = 15
DM Luke |
For all the fury, the great blade whistles past the thug's ear.
Trystan should roll to stabilize (d10). Brenin may act.
Brenin Grazier |
Sorry. Been out of town. In the words of Kayla, three days without internet is horrible.
That battlemap is strange. I can see into the portion of the room I'm not in, but I can't see the portion I am in. ??
I move into the room and kick the door shut behind me. If there's a bar or something that prevents it from being opened from the outside I engage it.
Perception check is 10+2=12. I look around for anyone else. My goal is to secure the room, make sure no one else is here and get to the other door.
DM Luke |
With the map I meant to show what you might have seen through the door when stabbing the dude that was locking it. The southern half of the building's interior is through an interior doorframe at (19-20,15). Consider your position at the beginning of this move as being under the eaves, outside the building. I'll give you the 5' step, close door, throw bar as a move-equivalent action.
The man in the coat passes up a chance to attack Brenin, turns tail and hauls up the street. The back door to the room slams shut and the bar falls by itself. Brenin has dashed into a dilapidated sitting room. There's a table against one wall with coins stacked in neat little piles.
Using your second action to move you into the further room.
A rickety wood stair with a closet underneath goes up to a second floor. The door in front of Brenin is open with a small office beyond.
Meanwhile, in the alley...
Badeye wheels to face the new danger from Isegrim. The morning star comes crashing down with such force that Isegrim's only able to partially turn the blow. A long gash is opened on the fighter's arm and blood drips freely from his elbow as he fights. 8 hp of damage to Isegrim.
Gars trails Isegrim into the melee reluctantly. Provides flank to thug #2, who still misses.
Lia's opponent also fails to land a blow on the elusive rogue.
Lia's turn.
Lia Smythe |
Lia takes a 5 foot step into square (15, 13) Here's to better math...
Lia flanks Badeye. She is seriously pissed off now. "Run home, Gars. Daddy-dearest will be angry at you for drawing this much attention to yourself!" She aims for the half-orc's large back.
This time it's an 11 + 2 (flanking) + 4 for a 17. I roll a 4 for damage and a 2 for my sneak attack bonus. Another 6 points down.
After her rapier pulls out of the orc, Lia continues to berate Gars. She truly hates him, but is hoping he's cowardly enough to run away.
This isn't looking so hot...
DM Luke |
Lia stabs the meaty beast in the back again, and still he spins and dodges through the frenzy of attacks. Rees is up.
Rees |
Still seeething, I aim my yellow eyes at his nether regions thinking of minimizing his attack and his manhood. I scream "leave now Badeye or your manhood will never stand true again."
I'm going for a -2 on his attack rolls for my hex and I roll a 16 + 5(intimidate) or +6 (bluff) not sure which one you would want to freak him out. Either way my intention is to make it clear to him that I will hex his .....
DM Luke |
I made my save again, so the hex only lasts this round. I'm rolling for Trystan's stabilization (last round) since he's about to get lapped... 4, meaning Trystan is at -5 hp on his upcoming turn. Isegrim is up.
DM Luke |
And I have a damage redact. I forgot to apply the Strength damage from the ray of enfeeblement to the damage Badeye did to Isegrim. I remembered to take it off his attack, but not his damage. This means that the hit Isegrim took up-page was for 6 hp, not 8.
DM Luke |
Dang! I keep having to check to see if pfrpg did anything with rules I thought I knew. In this case it's different from the rule we last used. We'll stick with the book (p.190 core) meaning you should be making DC 10 Con checks, with a -4 to the first roll. Go ahead and roll that for last round. If you fail it, go ahead and roll again for your turn coming after Isegrim, this one with a -5 penalty.
Each time you miss one of these you take a hit point in damage. When you make one, you stabilize and stop losing points. If your negative total reaches your constitution score, you walk into the light.
DM Luke |
Mystery solved. p145 of the 3.5 Player's Handbook on stabilization says it's a straight up 10% roll, which we've always handled with a d10. You wanted to roll a 1 at our table. You should be rolling a d20 per pathfinder rules. I'm gonna keep tripping up on the changes for the foreseeable future. :)
Sorry we keep getting crossed up. I was waiting on your stabilization from last turn still, and only rolled it for you when I needed to know if you still needed to roll for it this turn. (Once you stabilize, the need to roll goes away).
Go ahead and roll d20 (up to) twice (I doubt Isegrim's going to heal you this turn).
DM Luke |
You guys are straining my rules brain...
Rees, you could use Bluff in combat (Feint) this round to make him flat-footed against you next round. It does not apply to other attacks made on him, and it requires a standard action, which you used this turn already with the hex.
You still have 5' step and/or move-equivalent actions if you want them.
DM Luke |
Right, you have to tie the DC to pass, so a 10 or higher was good. Trystan has stabilized at -4 hp and is unconscious. No need for further rolls.
The dying rules seem alot more forgiving in pfrpg.
Kill something already Isegrim. :)
DM Luke |
Isegrim's deadly cut lifts Badeye's ugly head from his shoulders. The burly body collapses in a shower of blood.
CLEAVE!
