*tap* *tap*

Is this thing on... ?

Ok. Excellent. We're back in the saddle again and starting a new play-by-post campaign. This is the out-of-character thread for Luke's 'Shadow in the Sky'. So far I have three players:

Pam - human rogue
Chris - human ranger
Melissa - unidentified something

I'll try to recruit two more players off the boards here very shortly. With the holidays coming up I expect to have some time to finish a big custom map of the starting locale for this adventure - Riddleport. There will be an early urban focus to the campaign - but there will also be lots of outdoor and dungeon-crawl components as well. The starting location is a seedy town run by pirates and crimelords, so some character types will be harder than others to run credibly (I'm looking at you, Paladin & Monk). There is a Player's Guide to this campaign that I have PDF and hard-copy versions of. There will also be a campaign website (site redesign underway) where I will host illustrations, maps, and some informative pages about locations in the campaign. The site will be behind a secure sign-on for players only (so I can use art from the campaign materials without pissing off the good folks here at Paizo).

I expect the pace to be something similar to the Rise of the Runelords campaign that I ran, which was basically one or two posts a day with bursts of more frequent posts occasionally. I can really only post on nights and weekends. As a word of warning to prospective players, none of us are rules lawyers and there will be screw ups and rules questions throughout. That's what this thread will be for (along with general BS n'stuff).

For rules we will be using the Pathfinder ruleset. I am ok with the use of the playtest classes if anyone wants to try them, but if you do then you agree now to convert them to their final incarnations once the Advanced Player's Guide comes out. I run on the honor system as well - there's no need to use Invisible Castle or anything unless you want to. We'll run with a 20 pt purchase system for abilities. Characters are expected to be heroic! And I will try to kill you. :)

Also, I'd prefer players who do not know the plot of the adventure or the adventure path. Therefore please stay clear of the messageboards area on the Second Darkness adventure path while the thread is going.

I'd be interested in participating and willing to play whatever the party needs. Just let me know!

Luke, if you need another, I have been wanting to try out a sorceror, and would definitely be interested. Thanks.

Tale of Days Current Battlemap City Map

Jarik, I'm going to try and recruit folks who don't know the plot of the Second Darkness - which I acknowledge is a dumb thing to do on Paizo's message boards :/ All the other players are close personal friends and I'm very sure they do not know the plot (unless I talk in my sleep).

Gerald if you don't know the plot and are still interested, you're welcome to the fold. Where ya from an' what're ya drinkin?

Pam and I will sit down and roll up her rogue tomorrow sometime.

Melissa, I looked over the Witch and I think this selection is a winner that has lots of potential flavor. Question is, is she a good witch or is she a bad witch. I'll help you through rolling that character up in person as well. I'm printing out a character sheet for you over here.

The challenge when you're thinking about your character backgrounds is to come up with a reason why your character is in the town of Riddleport and in attendance at the 'Cheat the Devil and Steal His Gold' tournament being held at the Gold Goblin Casino.

Tale of Days Current Battlemap City Map

Ha. Sometimes I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer. Gerald, your byline says you're a charter AP subscriber. So I'm assuming you read the AP as well. You guys have the same issue I have with trying to find a game as a player. We've all read the APs.

I'm guessing you saw a post I made in a thread called Second Darkness Obituaries. I can see why you might assume I had played through the AP based on that, but I haven't done so.

Ya, that was it. I figured you just didn't see my last blurb about player knowledge of the plot. If that's the case, you're welcome to join. You can name your character anything you want, but you can't be a dark elf - there's no such thing (in reference to your alias name). It's a mythical creature like the skunk-ape or something.

What kind of character do you have in mind?

Liberty's Edge

I will confess to my noob-ism. I'm 38 and played many RPGs through high school and have only just gotten back into the mix (video game RPGs are boring to me. Kill/slash/kill/slash). Just recently started playing pen/paper Pathfinder about a month ago (Thurs nights 6-10) and I'm loving it but once a week is not satisfying my cravings. Would really like to try online variety. So would this game be ongoing daily, or would we try to have set sessions? On weekdays school and work might keep me away from the computer for 6-10 hours at a stretch but my evenings and weekends are very open. I'm in the central time zone BTW. Like I said, new territory for me. I am punctual, well versed in the rules, know how to play with a group and I am not annoying. Any information you could give would be appreciated, really want to know how the "average" group runs these, see if I would be a good fit.

Tale of Days Current Battlemap City Map

Boomwrangler, take a look at the Rise of the Runelords thread I referenced in my original post to see the speed of it. I'll be running this as an ongoing game, not with dedicated sessions, so the pace is inevitably going to be very slooooowwwwww. Gives you a long time to think about your post though. Sounds like your situation is very much like the rest of my group's. We used to game at the table but kids and bedtimes and all that. This is the only game we have now (except a table game I'm about to start with my kids). As far as the other players are concerned, Pam is my wife, Melissa my neighbor, and Chris is one of my oldest and best friends and gaming partners from back in the day.

So take a look at the pace of the other thread and let me know if you still want in the game. Being a noob is not an issue. We're all noobs to this ruleset but I like what I've seen thus far.

Luke, I got in another game in the interim. Thanks for considering me. Good luck with the campaign!!

LOL, the "Can I Call My Guy Drizzt" was a joke that ended up sticking.

Based on the other classes in the group (rogue, ranger, witch, right?) what do you think would be most helpful for me to play? I'm thinking maybe a fighter or summoner really appeals to me as well, but if it won't fit let me know.

I'm excited about playing! When do you plan on getting it started?

edit.. also, should I read through the player's guide? And are we using traits?

Tale of Days Current Battlemap City Map

Pam and I just finished creating her female 1/2 elf rogue. No name or background yet. I'll kick off the main thread as soon as the characters are done. In the meantime there's alot of work I want to do to get my website behind a sign-on and to finish this custom map of the town. I have three more days of work and then I'm off for the rest of the year (WOOT!), so I expect to knock these tasks out in short order.

I definitely want you to play the character that most intrigues you. These threads end up more like creative writing and less like DnD by the end, so whatever concept will inspire you most from an RP perspective is the right way to go. As long as the background is grounded in the Golarion setting I'm happy.

The player's guide will give you an idea of the opening setting. I would especially recommend it if you're playing a character with ranks in knowledge(local). But it's entirely optional. Though I'm changing the map alot, all of the locations and NPCs mentioned in the PG will still be there - they'll just be moved around a bit.

And go ahead and select 2 traits. I have not reviewed all of them, but I'm down with anything that adds customization to your characters. I'll let you know if any selections that anyone makes somehow fouls something in the setting or plot.

Liberty's Edge

Thanks for the reply Luke. I read several pages of the thread you pointed me to and I see how it works. I'm impressed by the caliber of role playing that group had. It makes my pen and paper game seem rather pedestrian, which is great as I am hoping to find people who value thought as much as fisticuffs and take things a tad more seriously. I would like to join if there is a place for me. I hope it doesn't take me too long to compliment your style.

I was forced to fill a muscle role with them, so I would really rather not be a grunt here. I was thinking cleric as the group seems to need a healer, I could still help in a fight and I've never played one before. Perhaps not-Drizzt could provide the biceps?

As you wished, I have no familiarity with the campaign. Will I want to choose my deity from the choices in the core rulebook? Is there a alignment restriction? Please let me know of any such specifics.

I assume you want a brief back story for my character. Let me know how detailed that should be. I can try to have my character sheet to you in the next day or two. Do we need to pass those via email?

Email:
iamandola@hotmail.com

Edit: Wondering if the cleric specifics, deities and traits in the companion are unique to the core book? Perhaps I will want to buy that first?

I've got a few ideas I'm working through for a fun fighter to play. So all good there. I think that the summoner might get tedious to play in a play-by-post keeping track of him and the eidolon both. And I'll have just as much fun with the fighter.

"Pam is in the house!" I'm excited about starting a new game. Welcome to Boomwrangler and CICMGD. My rogue is all rolled up and ready to go....I hope this one lasts longer than the opening dialog!I'll work on my back-story and get it posted ASAP. I'm looking forward to it.

An email is on the way. When your character sheet is done, you can just reply there. The character sheet area of my site will be open for you to post yourself eventually. Hopefully that won't be too annoying.

Riddleport's most represented deities are Cayden Cailean, Calistria and Besmara. You are in no way limited to those deities, those are just the ones with the most pull in this town. Alignment-wise, good and neutral will be fine. You'll have to sell me on an evil character concept.

Liberty's Edge

Thanks Luke and Pam. I went ahead and snagged the Players Guide which I believe has clarified everything for me. I should have enough time tomorrow night to get my information to you. If this campaign is destined to fizzle out I can tell you it won't be because of me, I'm strong with the follow through. Cleric sound like a good gap to fill then? I already saw the campaign specific trait I would choose.

Tale of Days Current Battlemap City Map

Beautiful! We're closed at 5 players and well on our way to lighting this thing up. In summary we have...

Chris - human ranger
Pam - 1/2 elf rogue
Melissa - Witch
CICMGD - fighter
Boomwrangler - cleric

That looks like a nice mix to me. Time to get crackin on all this homework I've made for myself. :)

Melissa and I are hopefully going to meet up Tuesday night to create the witch character.

Shout out to the Keystone chapter of the gaming group. Chris! Where are you my friend? If I have to make your character it's going to be a cute little gnome girl with a pokemon animal companion.

Just sayin' :)

Oh and hey guys (boomwrangler & not-D), on a social note I thought I'd at least mention that you've stumbled into a nest of gators. Wounded gators at the moment, but UF grads or supporters every one. I image we'll pollute this thread more than once with gripes or hoots.

I promise not to hold school-affiliation against your character in the game. Unless you're georgia fans. Or possibly volunteers. Then you might just want to say you like cricket or something.

Yeah, go to Account Settings up top of the page and then there's the Messageboard Aliases section on the left side of the page a little ways down. You can create multiple ones. It's a really good system

Rock and roll. You're welcome for the win this year by the way. We gift-wrapped that one.

Human ranger on board. Sorry for the delay in posting. Looks like this little discussion thread has drawn some attention. Must have gotten out that DM Luke's campaigning skills are unequaled in these parts.

My sorry a$$ hasn't done anything yet towards this campaign, but I'm going to make it top priority. Dang sure don't want to be a little gnome girl.

Well met Isegrim and Boomwrangler.

For those of you who don't know, Pam's our inside scoop. When things get tough, we call upon her to make things easier for us with the DM...she's got an inside track. I think we can expect a devious rogue with a sharp tongue...check out the saucy sorceress from the old campaign and you'll see what I mean.

In our last adventure, Melissa was our dwarven meat cleaver...and very good at it. Blood did spill. Can't wait to see how this witch turns out.

I was the druid in the last one. Didn't get to run with that as long as I wanted to, so I'm not straying far afield in my ranger choice. Yet another "stinky woodsmen" character for me.

Sorry Boom...still haven't forgiven your cornhuskies for what they did to us and probably never will. I'll try not to hold it against you. :) Got no problem with SC, 'cept one day a year. I root on the 'ol ball coach regularly.

Can't wait to get this rolling.

No doubt. Hell, I even pulled for Miss St except the night we played them - Mullen still feels like family. It's cool. The only thing constant in college football is change. Strong is way overdue for a crack at head coach and Louisville's a good gig.

Rachel (my 9yr old) would be pissed if she read this, BTW. Her character for Legacy of Fire is a little gnome illusionist chick.

Chris C. wrote:

If you're implying that my wife tricks for gaming advantage that's an utter and complete fabrication. She tricks for chocolate.

Hey...whoa up there. Way too much testosterone on the thread here. I had a little summary ready to post, but Chris summed everything up nicely.

And I don't trick for chocolate, it just seems to go well with the game.

For Andrew and Michael.....you have fallen in with a superior group of folks. I met Luke at UF and we've been married almost 17 years. Chris has been a friend forever and was a roommate for awhile, and Melissa has been our neighbor and good friend for 10 years. I am lucky enough to be a "retired" teacher, ten years in public service, and now homeschool our two monsters. They play a mean table game as well.....

I realize with the holidays and exams everyone will be busy. It'll be nice to have time to come up with a good back story. And speaking of which, it's funny that Andrew and I were kind of on the same page. I was thinking that my human mom was a prostitute and my elven dad not in the picture. I was looking at having some 1/2 siblings. I'm leaning toward a character that has been beaten down by life and sibs in some way, and just tries to keep her head down and NOT get noticed. I'm not interested in using my skills for a crime boss, but I was thinking I could be useful working in a gambling hall, blending in and identifying possible cheaters. You know the saying, like recognizes like? So, I'm trying to align my skills with these goals in mind. That's all I have for now. I'm actually trying to read the players guide, instead of just asking Luke! See, you can teach an old Pam new tricks!

Any thoughts from my fellow travelers on back story and other stuff is always welcome.

Whew...just got done reading/skimming the Pathfinder Companion. Felt like I was in the middle of Charles Dickens novel there for a bit. Left me wanting to take a shower. Fitting in with this mangy lot is going to be difficult for the character I envision. More likely, I'm taking the Into Enemy Territory approach. My ranger will be searching for the source of the Blot, probably under direction from another but believing that the Blot is a manifestation of the city's foulness and nothing less than a tsunami will solve either problem. I doubt very seriously I'd come to this town without knowing someone. If anyone's background fits maybe we can tie them together.

How about this trait thing? How many will we be able to select and any restrictions?

That's all I got for now.

Liberty's Edge

Chris C. wrote:

I don't know if this is any help Chris, but in my back story my father was going to be a cleric from a more respectable city being sent to the Riddleport branch to try and clean them up a bit. For unrelated reasons he died shortly after and that was 26 years ago, so I don't know how you would tie that in..

Dude Underdark-American Face Kicker 19 / Bleeding Heart Lib 1

A staple of fantasy I'm afraid. Must add to the drama.

Tale of Days Current Battlemap City Map

Nah. You almost have to have deadbeat parents to end up in a town like Riddleport - don't you? Another personality type I can see ending up in this town is the rebel-without-a-cause child of privilege. Someone who ends up rolling in the poo just to shock their parents. And of course there's the crusader - just be careful with this one. Riddleport is a town of dirty interests and anyone playing the crusader is liable to end up with a big red bullseye on their back.

Chris, it sounds like your character concept is leaning more toward the ranger that worships nature (rather than the hunter/bounty hunter type). There's a nature deity in the Golarion cosmology named Gozreh that might suit your tastes. If you're interested I can scrape up some background material on this and send it along.

Also, if your character has been sent to the town to investigate the blot by some external party, we should work on the details of that group. Are there superiors you report to? What's the motivation behind this group? Where are they based? That sort of thing. We can talk through this on the thread, or we can go to email if you want to conceal any character motivations from your fellow party members. Either forum is fine with me.

Tale of Days Current Battlemap City Map

And of course there's still the witch character to blend into this mix. I stood Melissa up last night because I'm getting old and grumpy and couldn't face creating a character after work and everything else yesterday. Neither of us work on Thursday, so we'll make it happen then.

Maybe there's a connection between the ranger and the witch? I have no idea what direction Melissa will go with that character but she has a tendency to create characters that sit somewhere between neutral and evil, so we'll just have to see.

Luke, Gozreh seems like a good fit but there's not much info in the CH.

Andrew, you're character human? I'm only in the theory stages now, so I'll flesh it out a bit over the next couple of days.
