Ruperta of Hetzau |
"Please allow me... "
Ruperta puts her hand on the door, closes her eye, sights and concentrates...
She uses her Door Sight ability to see what's on the other side of the door.

and shelves lie strewn about the place, with the foodstuffs, firewood, and other supplies they once contained scattered across the floor. Shuffling amidst the rubble is a man made of spare parts of other men, but rotting and foul. He looks to be the sort of creation you would expect from an untalented or untrained creator. However, he holds in one hand an arm, decorated with Shoanti tattoos...
Ruperta of Hetzau |
Fortitude Save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
Even facing the horrible images on her head, Ruperta keeps her cool, an starts to report to her companions what she sees:
"A pantry... All messed up... A horrible abomination, make of dead bodies, all rotten and... Horrible... It is holding a severed arm, with Shanty tattoos... Maybe if he got him out we can surround it... Flank it"
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
Examining the rest of the room you're in, you find a lot of alchemical equipment, chemicals and tools. You could probably sell it to an alchemist, but it's heavy and hard to move without breaking. Or if you had ranks in craft: alchemy you could spend some time here to create some routine alchemical items...
Ruperta of Hetzau |
Ruperta gets her "game face"
"This is my plan, I will open the door and go back 15' to let the abomination get in a line of fire. I will try to hold him there fighting defensively. You all surround it and between all we bring it down. Are you ok with the plan?"
Ruperta waits for them to assume position before opening the door...
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
As everyone assumed their positions, Ruperta begins to pull the boards from the door holding it shut. It takes a few moments, but she opens the door. Inside is a sight from a horror tale: a humanoid stitched together from rotting pieces of corpses stands amidst the destruction. It holds in a death grip an arm tattooed with Shoanti designs. It sees you all, and howls out a wordless cry of rage!

While Paxs tries to clear his stomach of its contents, Thrak turns into a cat shaped ball of anger. His bite misses, but his claws rake the rotting thing, doing a surprising amount of damage!
The creature, letting out a howl of anger/pain, tries to return the favor to Thrak!

Fortitude Save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
Even after seeing the creature Ruperta wasn't quite prepared to smell it. She feels the urge to get sick but concentrates and gets into fighting stance, trying to hold the abomination in check so her companions can kill it.
"Here beast! Face me!"
She tries to grab its attention so it leaves Thrak alone.
Ruperta will Fight Defensively! (-4 Attack, +2 AC). Her AC is 19 until the start of her next turn.

15 Ruperta
14 Pai
9 Slumper
Corbyn throws a vial of orange liquid at the creature, which bursts into flame as soon as it shatters! The creature is on fire, but Ruperta, Thrak and Slumper all take 1 point of fire damage from the splash!
Ruperta attempts to distract the flaming thing, swatting at it with her morningstar, but drawing no blood, or whatever it is that powers the thing.
Pai's missile hits the creature, but fizzles out as it does, doing no damage! Immunity to magic! Doh!
Slumper, his nostrils clamping down against the smell, whales on the thing, but cannot seem to get through its seemingly random flailings to score a hit!
Round 2:
20 Paxs and Thrak
18 Corbyn and the Golem
15 Ruperta
14 Pai
9 Slumper
Paxs, Thrak and Corbyn are up, then the creature, then everyone else!
Ruperta of Hetzau |
Ruperta understands Corbyn's move and takes a 5' step back, while trying to keep the abomination attention, and keeping the defensive attack.
Ruperta keeps the Fight Defensively! (-4 Attack, +2 AC). Her AC is 19 until the start of her next turn.

Our Mysterious Benefactor |
Corbyn steps back and Ruperta swings at the thing as it lumbers forward, but as Thrak attacks with a whirl of fangs and claws, the things simply falls apart under the onslaught. What was once a fierce golem made of rotting flesh is now a pile of rotten meat. An arm with Shoanti tattoos protrudes from the pile.
And Thrak eviscerates the Carrion Golem! Way to go!
The room is silent, though a soft sobbing, followed by a gruff "Shut yer hole!" echoes from the tunnels to the east...
Any searching of the storeroom to the south reveals nothing but rubble. The golem had apparently gone mad and smashed everything of value.
Pai Kromnite |
"Is that arm a part that we are looking for? That might be the corpse we were sent to retrieve," the gnome gulps as she looks at the tattoos.
She perks up after hearing the other voices deeper in the tunnels. She nods to the others.
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
As you move toward the eastern tunnels, the worked stone becomes natural stone tunnels. You come to a Y in the tunnel. A rank smell of excrement and filth wafts from the south, while to the north stairs are worked into the natural stone and head upward. A faint smell of decay and chemicals comes from the north.
To the south an echoing sound of sobs comes from the corridor. You hear heavy footfalls and a gruff male voice, "Shut it or it's no grub for you!"
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
Corbyn slips quietly around the corner into the more natural stone caverns and comes across a room currently being used as some sort of jail. Three 10 foot deep pits surround a central platform, upon which stands the jailor. The man (though you doubt he's fully human) is a hulking thing with bulging muscles, though his defining feature is his face, which is bulbous and covered in tumors, making his head resemble a cabbage. Each pit holds two people: three humans, two halflings and an emaciated dwarf spread among the pits, which reek of excrement and filth. They all look in various states of disease or near-death, but definitely all despair of ever escaping the hellhole.
Pai Kromnite |
Once Corbyn gives the info to the group:
"If there are prisoners, we have to go in there and free them. We might find another couple of body parts as well," she says, shaking her head at the thought of the corpse being in many different pieces.
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
As the discussion bears on, the party's hand is forced as the jailor in question comes around the corner to investigate the noise!
"What in the 'ell? Rolth give me big reward for all youse heads!" He shouts as he raises his meaty fists and steps in to attack!
Paxs: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
Slumper: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

Paxs and Thrak are up!
Paxs |
Paxs looks up at the sound and quickly tells Thrak to attack as he launches a glob of acid at the jailor.

Thrak charges to get a full attack with pounce

claw 2 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13, 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
Paxs launches his acid at the large man, while Thrak's bite is the only attack to penetrate the man's armor and thick musculature and near-blubber.
Cabbagehead shrieks a warcry and punches at Thrak! Unarmed Attack (no AoO): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25 for 1d4 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9 damage!
Pai, Corbyn, Ruperta and Slumper are up!
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
The heroes step forward and attack, but the cabbageheaded man simply seems to ignore most of them as they bounce off his immense fatty hide! Pai's missile is the only thing that gets through, as he lets out a cry of anger and rage!
ROUND 2:
24 Paxs and Thrak
21 Cabbagehead
16 Pai
10 Corbyn
9 Ruperta
5 Slumper
Paxs and Thrak are up first!
Paxs |
Without a clear shot at the big cabbagehead Paxs just gives Thrak encouragement.
"Get him Thrak, rip him to pieces."
