First off, welcome to the discussion thread. Get comfortable. It might be a little while.

Some of you have aligning backstories-- you'll want to take this time to align them up completely. Lanny and Percivel, Raikdar and Rhiannon, Uriel and Hania all have a likelihood of having run into one another-- however, the more's the merrier, so feel free to connect yourselves as you wish. Every single character is connected by Korvosa. You've all spent a long, long time here.

Let's see some aliases and posts from the people all around! If you haven't put up something by Saturday night, I'm going to assume you forgot you applied to this game and move on. Sound good? Yeah!

Let's see my house rules:

For HP: Roll your hit dice. If it's under half+1, it's half+1.

For example I'm newly 2nd level and need to roll hp. I roll 1d8 ⇒ 2. That's a result of 2-- so half, 4, plus 1, for 5. If I rolled a 6, it'd be 6. If I rolled a 5, it'd be 5. 4? 5. 8? 8!

d6? 1-3 is 4, 4+ is what you rolled. d8? 1-4 is 5, 5+ is what you rolled. d10? 1-5 is 6, 6+ is what you rolled. d12? 1-6 is 7, 7+ is what you rolled. Simple enough? I'm hoping so.

For Skills: Everyone gets a free Craft, Perform or Profession skill rank at each level. Yep. Go crazy with your new free skill points.

For Languages: Humans get their racial language for free. If you're Varisian, gain Varisian. If you're Tien, gain Tien. If you're a Half-Elf, Tiefling, or Kitsune?-- You get your racial language (elven, abyssal/infernal or sylvan) OR you can give it up for your racial language.

I'll roll checks for you guys from time to time. I will strive to never go "Roll a check with no description of possible results!", instead going with "Reflex saves in a batch... take this, this, this and damage and we're moving." Perception checks against surprise are the same way; Some minor reactive rolls will be similar.

I won't roll important checks for you. Most saves will just be dealt with at the beginning of your turn-- effects that necessitate I do it will just be dealt with, but should be few and far between.

If you see a spoiler, feel free to look and conjecture. I don't care if you read spoilers meant for other people or for DCs you don't make; just don't metagame.

Finally, to stafe off the long wait until I write and post unique bonuses: The Sherlock Holmes film score, in my opinion, is Korvosa incarnate.

F Human Bard 1

Rhi, checking in. Need to do some touching up--for one, I embarrassingly forgot to get arrows--but other than that she's good to go.
HP roll: 1d8 ⇒ 2

female Tiefling
Stats:

Popping in to say 'Hi!' and wave in a surly fashion to everyone. My chractter now has two ranks in Perform and one in Sailor and I've updated her background to account for the sailor.

1d12 ⇒ 6 Hit points will be 6+1, then

I'd love to coordinate backgrounds. This morning is kind of crazy for me, so I'll be back later and hopefully we can have some fun doing that!

Male Human Paladin (Hospitaler) 2

1d10 ⇒ 10

Now that's a sweet roll.

Uriel checking in. Not completely happy with the picture yet, so that might change.

Uriel isn't your standard paladin, if that wasn't obvious considering his current occupation.

As for knowing others, anyone who has had dealing in Old Korvosa, especially the Old Docks part, could know him or at least heard of what some call the 'Whore's son militia'

EDIT: Oh, and I'm quite the skill monkey for a Paladin, something which might increase even more as I'm thinking of eventually grabbing 2 levels of Rogue with the Investigator archetype (assuming things develop that way) as that basically nets me what I want from the Sleepless Detective PrC without having to take Alertness.

Lantana, I definitely think we would be connected. Given that Percivel is a fixture of the church, you may have grown up together. And/or collaborated on missions where a degree of muscle was needed.

DM, I'd like permission to change one thing: I'd like to change from the Fervor inquisition to the Recovery inquisition. It seems like it would fit his missions much better to be better at finding lost things, like art or artists.

2nd level HP roll: 1d8 ⇒ 8

@Percivel, Growing up together works. I also notice that you are a luthier and play strings. Lanny has a lute and plays as well. Maybe you made my lute and we jam together from time to time?

1d8 ⇒ 7

Hello everyone! Looking forward to the game. I play a kitsune rogue trickster if anyone wants to make ties with her.

Hania Ishihara

I will make any final purchases and await the gameplay thread.

@Lantana: Works for me. He's not the best violin player, but he's a darn fine maker of instruments and huge supporter of the church. I could see us hanging out, given that I have a workshop in the rear of the temple where you could hide out and feel comfortable when the world gets too much.

Also, I'd definitely have taken jobs where someone larger and intimidating would have been useful, even if combat wasn't involved and you seem like a perfect intimidation partner.

@Uriel: Given that a lot of artists are poor, at least starting out, I would be in Old Korvosa from time to time. How about you helped me to find a missing artist who had gotten hooked on Shiver and was being kept by a local crimeboss as a pet artist? That could be how Lantana, you and I met: she was providing muscle when we went into a dangerous place and you were nearby when a scuffle broke out. It wasn't your usual protectee, but it did contribute to the general peace of the neighborhood.

@Rhiannon: Since you're a bard, would you be comfortable having met Percy at a local music/arts festival? Percy would have made it a point to seek out local artists and offer the church's services to them. Plus he might have had a booth selling his instruments.

@Hania: Percy has had reason in the past to hire specialists to retrieve artwork that was stolen or not paid for in full by the wealthy and nobles; would you be comfortable being my prime contact for retrieval services? I doubt I would know you were a kitsune, but just that you're skilled and do good work. Legality is less of a concern for me.

female Tiefling

Oh dear, we have at least three PC's who have perform. :) I do not know if Rhiannon would know me, but I guarantee I know who she is. Lanny is very much into music, musicians and performers.

Male Human Paladin (Hospitaler) 2

@Percy: Uriel tends to stay away from criminals that do not threaten his own neighbourhood but he has several youngster who help him and roam around town and he could have found out where your artist was being held prisoner. If requested he would have lend a hand in freeing him/her as well.

@Hania: Uriel might end up a bit at odds with Hania as he still has the idea of joining the Hellknights. The main reason he hasn't yet is that it would take him away from his current job, which he deems more important.
On the other hand though, her investigations could help him trace down his father, who is a Hellknight, a paralictor(officer) to be precise. At the start of the game he doesn't know yet though, he just knows his father was in law enforcement.

@Lantana & Percy: Where in Korvosa is the Temple of Shelyn situated? The faith would be a natural fit for a friendly relationship with Uriel and the small group of cultists of Empyreal Lords that live in the red light district where he lives.

And don't be afraid Uriel will join your band, he isn't much of a musician.

Percivel of Shelyn wrote:

That would be just fine. I like a lot in fact.

F Human Bard 1

Yeah, Rhiannon knowing either of you would definitely be cool. She was sort of born into the music scene, and definitely want to maintain acquaintance with people, especially if she ever needs to go knocking for information, and also just because music is still her passion. Percivel's work in particular would make him of interest to her in that regard.
And yeah, damn, three Performs. Rhi's the only one not going strings though; Sing is her primary, and then she'll start putting points into Keyboards once she hits sixth so she can use it in lieu of Intimidate or Diplomacy.
EDIT: Wait no that's a lie; she does have a lyre, but it's more of a background piece she doesn't put much emphasis on; it's just for fluff reasons, and she won't be putting any points into it.
EDIT2: And also, for convenience, could we all copy/paste our backgrounds into our profiles? It'd make it a lot easier to refer to when it comes to this process.

Percivel, you did your attributes incorrectly. You actually have two more points to spend. Here is why.

When you placed your racial into wisdom you incorrectly labeled it as 5 points to get that. You actually spent 2 points because your racial modifier does not count in the point buying.

Was wandering around all the character sheets and noticed that.

Hania already has her background there. Once I begin posting on that alias it will be easier to see.

Oh, I see the error. No, I just forgot to change the Wisdom in the point buy section to 16. I did it correctly above in the stat block.

@Uriel: The Sanctuary of Shelyn sits in the southern end of North Point, a small, square building richly appointed with statuary, murals, flowering plants, and a gorgeous interior courtyard. - Guide to Korvosa

Lantern Lodge

Percivel of Shelyn:

The Inquisitor: As anonymous as you’d like to be, sometimes your reputation precedes you. While in a city, survival DCs are reduced by 2 for you. Three times per day, when you meet someone from the art scene or the underworld scene who you think has crossed paths with you before, say so and tell the GM what they know. Roll Diplomacy or Intimidate, depending on what they know you for; they begin interaction with the newly adjusted attitude and may be influenced further.

Lantana Mugwort:

The Misaligned Fiend: The gluttonous madness that runs through your veins is tempered by your own kind personality into something more saccharine. You gain a +2 bonus on all Perform checks due to your varied upbringing in the Temple. Twice per day when a beneficial spell is cast on you while you are raging, you may drop superstitious as an immediate action, accepting the results of the spell—you can innately sense that the person casting the spell is helping you, and therefore can tell the difference between a harmful and helpful spell without a skill check. On your next initiative count, it reactivates without an action.

Uriel Felar:

The Paladin: You protect women against those who would bring them down, and worship the Gods who believe in your cause. They’ve answered. Your detect evil spell-like-ability can detect the intent to harm a woman as well as the act of harming a woman for up to 1d6x10 minutes afterwards, even if the target is below 5 hit dice. Neither of these acts trigger your detect evil if it is or was in the spirit of self defense. In addition, you have numerous allies across the city and may call upon them to perform tasks in your absence such as selling items, retrieving items, making gather information checks (their bonus is +3) and seeking out the location of spellcasters from whom you may buy spells. They may perform other actions under the GM’s discretion. They are utterly loyal to you and do not betray you unless grieviously mistreated.

Hania Ishihara:

The Rakshasa: With years of practice, you’ve made your skill at mimicry perfect. When you use your Change Shape ability to take on the form of an invidividual you’d observed, if you have heard them speak, you may also mimic their voice, gaining a +10 bonus on Bluff checks to modify your voice. In addition, you know when an opponent has seen through your disguise or bluff check to mimic your voice and, once per day, may ask the GM to reveal the result of the die roll; At your option, you may then ask the GM to re-roll the hidden disguise or bluff check, though the second result may not be known to you and must be taken.

Raikdar Silvershrike:

The Rabbit Prince: As a noble, you were expected to be better than everyone else; As a peasant, you realize this is why the people hate nobles. You have a +3 bonus to Knowledge (nobility) and may make such checks untrained. The first time every day that you bring a person of nobility into unconsciousness with a damaging effect, you regain one spent arcane pool point. Finally, you possess etiquette that others do not, and gain a +1 bonus on Diplomacy, Bluff and Sense Motive when speaking to a noble. If you slight the noble through words, you may, once per day, retract their offense at your comment through your etiquette.

Rhiannon Mableanbh:

The Hidden Truth: Your father was a master at the tricks of his trade and imparted his experience and wisdom in the art of stealth to you. Climb DCs are reduced by 2 for you. Once per day as an immediate action you may use your father’s training to hide in plain sight for a number of rounds equal to your level. In addition, when attempting to use stealth to move unseen through a crowd or crowded area, you may roll the disguise skill instead.

I like the stuff you guys are doing so far. Going to start looking through character sheets to see if everything is squared away! If you particularly dislike your bonus, let me know through whatever means are available and I'll see about changing it up for you.

Male Human Paladin (Hospitaler) 2

Comment on bonus:
Wow, great stuff.

The only comment from me is that Uriel does not only protect the female prostitutes, also the male ones, there are just less of them.
Not a request to change the bonus, just a clarification.

Sheet isn't done yet for me. Settled on the framework skill wise but am not 100% sure on the rest, nor whether I need a 5th skill rank per level and want to trade in Skilled for either Heart of the Streets or Silver Tongues. Also not settled on the 2nd feat, but will likely go for the default one in the form of Power Attack.

Gear should be done easily, I just have to figure out which pieces I want masterwork and how heavy I want my armor at the start.

F Human Bard 1

Definitely no complaints about my bonus; very true to her fluff. Especially if she can get her hands on a Hat of Disguise once the money comes in and she really puts that Disguise skill to good use.

I haven't really read everyone's profiles. I'll get busy with that, see if I have any thoughts.

I like the bonus very much. It fits completely. I will add the ability to the crunch later tonight when I get on my computer. Tablet for the win!

Male Human Magus Level 2 AC18 T14 F14 CMD 17 | Hp 17/17 Perception +2 Arcane Pool 3/4 |Init +3

Maybe Uriel helped Raikdar out of a fight when he was outnumbered?

I took gambler for the bonus profession, it just seemed to fit. I was already seeing Raikdar as someone who bet on his own fights. With the ranks as a gambler, he would probably spend lots of time in taverns. So he has likely seen, (and been seen by, Rhiannon.)

I took perform: sing which complements her profession: barmaid. You would probably know her or at least have seen her around.

Lantern Lodge

One thing I wanted to mention was how in this game you won't be stripping down people for loot, shaking their boots and such. Feel free to take whatever you want from an enemy, but don't feel obligated to sell everything every corpse you make owns. I'll keep you guys in the green, don't worry.

Here's two questions for Rhiannon: What's a Cat Baineann and how do I pronounce Mableanbh?!

DM Titan wrote:

Blifgarnhe? Rofl!

DM Titan, would a torch fit inside a backback? I have decided to reevaluate gear.

Lantern Lodge

Torches can fit anywhere.

Don't worry too much about encumbrance or how you carry things. I'm a fan of the Wayne Reynolds look, where Amiri has a bolt of spears connected to her back by magic.

F Human Bard 1
DM Titan wrote:

Whoops. Ignore the race bit; it was from a custom race I used for a campaign that never got off the ground and I forgot to edit her profile fully when switching her over. Fixed that little mess-up. As for pronouncing it, it's just two bastardized Gaelic words thrown together (again, artifact of the old campaign), but closest I could tell it would be something like 'Mab-leen'.

Male Human Paladin (Hospitaler) 2

@Raikdar: Uriel could have helped him, but it's not like he goes out of his way to do such things. Normally his nights are spent guarding his home district.

@Raikdar: You're the only one I'm having difficulties connecting to Percy. I guess if you know the nobility in town I may use you as a contact to learn more about a noble before approaching them. I'm guessing Percy does middleman duty for certain artists and may want to get an unbiased opinion on the wealth and character of the nobles before he enters into negotiations with them. Does that sound like it works? A money for info sort of arrangement?

You could have come into contact with Radikar by way of Hania. Since she would know both of you introducing one to the other is just a matter of deciding how it went down.

I have poured over gear and I feel I am finally done. DM Titan, I have added the special bonus to her character sheet.

Is there anything else the rest of us want to do for having tie-ins for our characters? Or am I just jumping the gun? :P

Male Human Magus Level 2 AC18 T14 F14 CMD 17 | Hp 17/17 Perception +2 Arcane Pool 3/4 |Init +3

@ Percivel: Yeah, I was having the same trouble with your character. Raikdar does always need money. So that could work. I figured if it was too hard to force a connection, we could always let Lukain be the common denominator.

@ Uriel: If you don't like it, that's ok with me. Raikdar prefers the less fancy areas of the city, for now. So him being in Uriel's district is not too great a stretch. Where there are harlots, there is probably gambling, and fight club. Both of which are Raikdar's current means of cash flow. He finds neither of these to be satisfactory in the pursuit of his goals, so maybe Lukain can be the common denominator for you as well.

@ Hania (Grand Moff Vixen) Sympathetic, listening, bartenders are always great. Can't have too many of those.

I'm willing to work with everyone to come up with some cool back story, and I don't want to stick anyone with stuff they don't care for. We're all here to have fun, after all.

Raikdar Silvershrike wrote:

It seemed like a way to have a common thread between the characters.

Actually a good idea. I wasn't being sarcastic about the bartender thing. I'm sorry if it sounded that way. I realize it probably did, but that wasn't what I was aiming for.

I hate you with a passion! :p

Seriously, I didn't think you were being sarcastic at all.

Male Human Paladin (Hospitaler) 2

Uriel is done as well, though there still is room and money for some improvement on the equipment front.

He even brings his own guard dog, trained by the fellow who I'd like to be his squire when Uriel reaches 3rd level. The dog won't come along on trips though.

Beyond that, he has Craft (Alchemy), in order to make all sorts of poultices and the such to help out in his neighbourhood (Antiplague is a welcome commodity).
He also still carries the blade that features in his background, made it a Cutlass as that comes closest though it actually is one of those large butcher's knives (too big to be a dagger, only one side sharpened).
Only thing I haven't decided on is whether to grab a shield. His main weapon is a Greataxe, the preferred weapon of one of his patrons, but a shield would be nice back up, I just don't see him using it.

Lantern Lodge

Don't worry too much about connecting your characters. It's not imperative that everyone know everyone-- there has to be an element of mystery in character relationships, otherwise it will seem odd when you're all not used to one another when things start happening.

We should be on track to start sometime tomorrow (technically today); expect the post sometime around 5pm if I can help it.

Okay, finished shopping. Rhiannon is now as encumbered with narrowly useful items as she can be until she can afford a Bag of Holding, so I'm all set for play.

Lantern Lodge

Gonna be a bit later than I thought due to computer problems; everything should go over fine, though. Just an hour or two after I thought they would!

Reviewing builds and stuff now, though. Feel free to, as we go through, change anything about your character as long as you let me know.

Which is to say-- sorry for taking like three days to say so, but you can change your inquisition, Percy.

No worries! Life gets busy at the worst possible time!

Lantern Lodge

Percivel: What + track is at, stern gaze's + should just be noted somewhere

Rhiannon: Not sure what's going on with some of your untrained skills-- +4 knowledge (geography) and (planes) for example. 2 int, 1 bardic knowledge-- where's the 3rd thing there? Grease is DC 15 or DC 11?

I'll continue to check over-- first post incoming soon!

F Human Bard 1

The third thing is from her trait, Historian, which gives her a +1 to all Bardic Knowledge checks. And ugh, yeah, it's 15; I write things without taking attributes into account so that I can go and fill those in later, apparently forgot about spell DCs. I wrote the sheet up at like 5 AM, sorry.

Lantern Lodge

Here's hoping I didn't mess something up!

It's up and I'm off and away to my face-to-face game. Play nice, guys.

So, it turns out that my computer problems were a lot simpler than I thought. Firefox just crashes my entire computer whenever I mouse over a link. I had to move to Chrome.

This is what I've been listening to when I've been writing the last posts and probably will be for a bit into the future. Go ahead and give a listen or not. Max Payne 3 - MAX NJ

The soundtrack for right now...

It would be pretty funny if everyone started trying to intimidate Lukain. 1d6x10 minutes later, he might go get the guard!

Hey Titan, would using the change shape ability grant bonuses for being a small size? Like being a halfling or child? I am aware that the ability does not alter ability scores.

Advanced Race Guide wrote:

Kitsune don't change size-- they can only turn into humans.

Realistic Likeness lets you turn into a bunch of different humans instead of just one. If you're turning into a human child, that's fine, but for the sake of argument let's not adjust stats for that. I don't want child form to be a go-to superior combat form. Let's also keep it within reason-- turning into a baby or toddler, for example, might be out of your reach.
