Kriger Eilifsson
I'm pretty good off. I've got 57. Unless Mal's healing didn't take affect, then I've got 27.
With a look of fury upon his face, Kriger tries to remain calm due to their current predicament as he can't help but keep his eyes trained on their dead healer. "Probably a good idea," he responds solemnly as he moves off to see if the wisps left any other victims in their wake, his axe firmly in hand.
Kriger Eilifsson
Kriger returns, shaking his head at Kalsgrim to let him know he's found nothing. Noticing the "body bag", Kriger sheathes his axe and moves toward it. Standing over the covered Malaswyn, he bends down and picks him up, throwing him over his shoulder as if he were nothing more than a sack of potatoes. "Let's go."
Kalsgrim Lodovka
Objectives for the next six months?
Over the next six months, Kalsgrim is going to start considering what they need to do to make this fledgling barony truly independent. He'll want to explore the mountains between Providence and Varnhold, looking for threats to either settlement and perhaps a more direct route between them that doesn't require going through Brevoy. He'll make outings to explore the hexes between their current land grant and Vordakai's tomb, even though it technically falls out of their jurisdiction. He'll also want to explore the hexes to the south of their land grant; the idea is for at least ten miles past where they are officially sanctioned to settle, he wants a buffer of explored land where they know there aren't any major menaces ready to boil over into their farmers, etc.
He'll continue to keep an eye out for likely prospects for a bride.
As the weather starts to improve, he'll make a point of visiting Tzaztleford, Varnhold, the Sootscales and the Nomen. He'll check sites like the mites' caves and the Stag Lord's keep to make sure nothing else has moved into them that needs to be driven out.
Malaswyn Tyddewi
I love you guys that was not a spectacular death but you gave it real gravitas. Don't forget you've got 9days (ish) to get a 5000gp diamond and someone who can cast raise dead.
Kriger Eilifsson
Making it back to the castle, Kriger lies the healer's body down in his room. "Alright, we've got to find a way to get him back. I've heard of healers like himself able to raise the dead and such. What do we need to do, Kalsgrim? Servayn? Do either of you know?"
Kalsgrim Lodovka
"Let's get him back to Providence, quickly. Janku can cast a spell that can preserve his remains. We can send Lukasz to get a scroll that will allow Janku to restore him to life."
Janku should have no problem casting Gentle Repose for Malaswyn. We just need to get together the cash for the scroll, which Janku should be able to use.
Kriger Eilifsson
You make your way back to Providence without incident.
We've actually made it back already. :)
"Let's get him back to Providence, quickly. Janku can cast a spell that can preserve his remains. We can send Lukasz to get a scroll that will allow Janku to restore him to life."
"Okay, good. To Restov is where you're talking about I'm guessing. And, um, is that gonna cost us something?"
Servayn Krolz
back!
At the realization that Malaswyn did not endure the excruciating gauntlet of lightning that was the wisp's concentrated fury, Servayn will call for Ember and offer to carry him back to the capital at speed (unslowed by terrain, at least), so that his body can be preserved by our former High Priest's ungentle touch.
Ember flies at 40, which isn't great, but will at least avoid being slowed by difficult terrain. Once gentle repose is cast, we'll have time for a more stately trip to Restov for resurrection.
Letting both local farmers and cityfolk see Malaswyn's body and hear of his sacrifice, as we bring him for gentle-repose-ing, and then on to Restov, might help with granting his faith more of a foothold, especially when he returns alive again, through the grace of the gods. Yeah, I'll go there, and totally exploit his death for a PR boost to the temple of Sarenrae. Servayn's not a Sarenrite, so it's not even sacrilege! Just terribly, terribly tacky. :)
As for events over the coming seasons, an unannounced check up on the kobolds, to make sure that they are keeping themselves out of trouble, and then the bulk of it attempting to hammer out some sort of working relationship between the Varnholders and the Nomen centaurs, so that we can stop that potential fire before it flares up into something serious. Servayn will attempt to capitalize on the facts that aid from the Nomen helped us save them from the undead Cyclops, and that their situation itself stemmed from an unwise exploration of an area that the Nomen had been guarding for generations to get the Varnholders on board. The Nomen will be harder to deal with, since Servayn has no idea what they really want, but hopefully an appeal to pragmatism will serve, as the humans aren't leaving this land, and it would be best for them to adapt to the situation and get their voices into the local government, than to hope that we go away and end up having to deal with the trouble (like undead Cyclopes) that we end up stirring up, lacking their wisdom and experience with local dangers.
Someone who has a positive Int modifier and two knowledge skills to rub together should probably try to figure out what or who those wisps were talking about. She? She, who? Is there a demon lord / lady of will o' wisps and a shrine somewhere we need to un-defile to stop them being attracted to these quarters? Would mounting the preserved corpses of these wispy little balls of nothing serve to piss them off and get more our people murdered, or be a morale boost to our own people?
Other Mastermind
A small group is dispatched to get to Restov and back as quickly as possible. Lukasz and Tuck offer to lead the "embassy".
Likasz comes to you, a concern on his brow: "Sarenrae doesn't have a strong cult in Restov. From what I recall, our best bet for a scroll of this power is either Gorum, Pharasma or Abadar. Whoever we choose, they will ask for whom we wish to use it, and their deeds in life. Should I lie?! If I don't, or worse if I do badly, they'll want more than gold...What am I allowed to offer them?"
Where is the gold coming from? Where should I deduct the 5,000 GP?
Servayn Krolz
Reflecting on Lukasz and Tuck's first comments, Servayn replies, "I would not recommend lying in any case, but to attempt the shrines of Gorum and Pharasma first. Playing up Malaswyn's falling in glorious battle against an honorless foe, refusing to heal himself so that he might make another strike against his attackers, while downplaying that he would have had extreme difficulty casting a healing spell in any event, would seem to 'play well' with the faithful of Gorum. With those of Pharasma, noting that the Lady of Graves will make the final judgement, and not allow his return if she does not agree that his time on this world was cut short, should be adequate sophistry. With Abadar, none of that is warranted. As far as I have seen, all they will want is gold up front and the assurance that Malaswyn was no brigand, debtor or coin-shaver. Have we a shrine to Gorum already? Offering to construct a shrine to either of the others, or to expand the shrine to Gorum, might help to grease palms, if necessary. I'd save that for a last resort, as it would place the burden unfairly on the people of Frieland, who might benefit more from a grainery or sawmill or something..."
At Tuck's last comment, "Of the potential players who stand to gain power and influence among the Swordlords, which would be most compatible with our own goals? Is there anything we can do to support that individual, from here, or would it be wiser to remain apart from the politics of our neighbor, than to be seen taking sides?"
Servayn Krolz
Servayn has 2100 gp to put up for a raise dead spell. He'd rather pay for the spell to be cast than for a scroll (although he doesn't care about which is cheaper), since we don't have anyone who would be able to use the scroll anyway. Buying a scroll would just leave us with a piece of paper no one can use and a still-dead cleric...
In addition to the raise dead, we should also try to dredge up an additional 2000 gp. to pay for the restoration spells that Malaswyn is going to need to pay off the two permanent negative levels he would otherwise gain (which he can only remove one per week).
Malaswyn Tyddewi
Did we ever get to make that shopping trip? If not, Malaswyn is sitting on plenty of coin.
If we did then that holy bow is probably worth some gold...
Kalsgrim Lodovka
"The faithful of Abadar may be our best chance. Do not forget that, in addition to amassing wealth, their lord charges them with defending civilization. And Malaswyn was slain doing exactly that: defending those on the edge of civilization from dark forces from the wild. Let's check his chambers; perhaps he had coins of his own left; under the circumstances, I don't think he would mind."
If not, Kalsgrim will be willing to have his haversack sold toward the effort, and his cloak as well if needed. They are worth 1,000 gp and 2,000 gp respectively.
Other Mastermind
Tuck and Lukasz look at you nonplussed. Tuck laughs mightily and says: "All right, we'll ask them all then!"
Soon after, they leave on horses, their saddlebag laden with precious stones, to Restov.
Four days later, a letter is brought by a courier. It bears the arcane mark of Lukasz.
Restov is restless.
Jamandi is doing all he can to keep the families from tearing each other apart. His father is not getting any better, if the rumours are to be believed, and mobs of angry citizens spontaneously form in the bowels of the city, fuelled by uncertainty and false whispers. Restov could very well be the guano that sparks the fireball in all of Brevoy...
Tuck and I have made visits to the three churches. The pharasmins have simple motivations. We can bring the body to Restov or they'll provide a scroll they assured Janku should be able to use, and they want money for it. Simple. The gorrumites are displeased with Janku, it seems, and they don't trust Davos. You should have seen their face when Tuck explained Malaswyn was a priest of Sarenrae... They'll do it, for half the cost, but they want a temple in the centre of Providence and a seat on the council. Finally, the abadans were pleasantly intrigued by our endeavours. They offered to raise Malaswyn in exchange for a shrine in Providence, with a house for a priest and his acolytes.
We wait for your instructions. Time is running out.
Lukasz and Tuck
Things can stay blurry about the shopping. The final cost will depend on your decision too.
Servayn Krolz
"If we have the coin, the Pharasmin offer seems the least onerous for our fledgling kingdom to absorb. If not, then the Abadaran offer will have to suffice. The Gorumite offer is unacceptable to me." Servayn offers.
"I can fly our decision to Restov, to save time, since we've already squandered too much time."
Kalsgrim Lodovka
"Agreed. The Gorummite offer is not a possibility. I'm not opposed to a shrine for Abadar; their goals largely align with ours, and they make excellent moneychangers and bankers. But if we want to avoid that entanglement, I am willing to sell some of my belongings. Did anyone ever find out of he had any wealth remaining?"
Kriger Eilifsson
"No way in HELL we take the Gorrumites offer! But I got no problem with the Abadarans offer. I'm with you two on that. I say we go that route. It avoids us trying to find ways to get money right now and speeds up getting Mal back alive."
Kalsgrim Lodovka
"I think the Abadarans will be a good influence on our fledgling community. Typically, their place of worship has a vault that merchants can rent space in, and they can serve as moneychangers as well. We are still trying to attract businesses to our city to help support our people, and having them here may bolster the confidence of merchants and craftsmen alike. I also like the idea that it shows that the worship of other gods, beyond those held dear by our inner circle, are welcome here. That is, as long as they don't hinder our overall efforts. And do not forget, part of their lord's mandate is the protection of civilization, not get the acquisition of wealth. We may need their power before all is said and done here."
We will commit to building a shrine and a house for the Abadarans in exchange for bringing Malaswyn back.
Since BPs don't actually represent just coins, but also influence, goods taken to cover tax obligations, etc., Kalsgrim will find opportunities to start laying the ground work. He'll talk up the positive aspects of the Abadarans to the locals. He'll have some of those involved in tax collecting look for opportunities to get supplies; so when lumberjacks are being taxed, we'll accept good building lumber rather than coin. When carpenters are being taxed, we'll accept a commitment of labor hours instead of coin, etc.
He won't hide the fact that they brought back Malaswyn, but he will emphasize that places of worship for all of the goodly faiths are planned, including a cathedral that can be used by all.

Message is sent back through the courier. Five days later, Tuck and Lukasz make their way back to Providence, with a carriage in tow, bearing the golden key, symbol of Abadar.
Emerging from it is a man of great gait, bearing heavy jewelry on his fingers. The whole man is like the sun, garbed in golden faith, as he pushes back the door of the carriage. "Greeting Friends, I bless this new town of Providence. May the great Keeper of Cities protect it and see it prosper!" He steps out ceremoniously, followed by two pudgy acolytes. With haste, they pass a small broom on the dirt floor, an instant before the priest kneels down and kisses it.
The man rises and smiles at you: "Okay! Now that this is done, quick! Show me the dead sarenraeite!"
Servayn Krolz
Good grief, I thought we flew his body up there to be resurrected! We're like the keystone cops...
Ember remains more-or-less-politely behind as Servayn steps forward to greet the priest with a respectful bow of his head. "We thank you for your blessing, Archbanker, and may our youthful community grow to spend and save wisely under Abadar's counsel." as an afterthought, as he brings to mind the tenets of Abadarite faith, he adds, "And keep the lawless brigands who once ruled these lands far from our door."
He gestures towards the hall in which Malaswyn's body lies in state, hastening to offer the vaultkeeper refreshments after his long carriage-ride, some sort of honey-glazed pastries and full-bodied wine being all that the post-winter-stores can supply, with no fruits or berries in season so close to the winter snows.
Diplomacy take 10 to avoid offense (+20 makes for 30 on the Take 10). He's not trying to score extra points and risk bollixing things up, just avoid sticking his boot in his mouth. If a roll is required; 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (1) + 20 = 21
Wow, virtual dice hate me as much as the real thing. Hope I could take 10 on that roll!
If all goes well with the spellcasting, Servayn will offer to show the Archbanker to quarters to freshen up or rest, if he prefers, and then offer to show him around town, so that we can hammer out the fine points of where he would like a structure to Abadar, whether or not he would prefer a stand-alone shrine or to be part of a larger church to multiple faiths (including Erastil and Sarenrae) or some other arrangement, etc. What Servayn understands of local trade and commerce he will engage the priest in, attempting to avoid spilling any information that might undercut local businessmen, if he is savvy enough to do so...
Servayn still has 2000+ gp. if Malaswyn is going to need to cast a pair of restoration spells to get rid of permanent negative levels. I'm not clear on what sort of arrangement was made with the Abadarites, since we didn't really make it, so I don't know if that was covered, or something we'll have to deal with after.
Kalsgrim Lodovka
"Welcome to Providence." He nods as Servayn leads the way to Malaswyn and seeing to the comfort of their guest.
When the group is discussing how to meet their commitment to the Abadarans, Kalsgrim will say "I had in mind a religious district for the city. The current government sector is rapidly filling up. I am thinking we need to establish a market district with a marketplace at the center and a ring of shops and craftsmen around it. Then another district with a catherdral at the center, and shrines and temples surrounding it. It looks like the shrine to Abadar may be one of the first buildings in that district."
Other Mastermind
The abadaran pushes past Kalsgrim: "I'm sure this can wait. Show me the body of the one that laid his life in the defense of civilization. By Abadar's will, this servant of Sarenrae will be brought to life, to keep His and Her work in this newborn realm!"
His waist bumbs on the table and he absentmindedly reaches for the delicacies presented by Servayn as he stares at Malaswyn: "Yes... Quite scorched he is... He must have suffered a great deal, and of course, there was nothing you could have done about it. Were the rumours true? A dozen of those creatures?! I have never heard of such a thing... Do you think something triggered this? Mmmh... Okay now, SILENCE PLEASE!!!" he raises his arms and finishes swallowing his pastry as the two acolytes come to his sides, each holding a golden key fit with a enormous diamond. The arms extend to hold the keys: "By Your Will, Abadar, May this servant be brought back from the Boneyard, called from the ashen grasp of Pharasma, to be resurrected among the living; a true miracle and a sign of your true power in this realm, in order to serve Your purpose, by protecting civilization and trade, keeping the roads and the streets of Frieland safe for Commerce. May he walk again, to sing your praise, though he serves the Worthy Sarenrae. Abadar HEAR ME and RAISE THIS DESERVING SOUL!!!" he clashes the two keys together and they burst in a shower of golden dust...
Malaswyn's feature seem to rebuild themselves as the soft rain patters on him. Calm washes over pain as his expression changes.
Suddenly, his eyes green open, but they are now the colour of gold!
"IT'S A MIRACLE! PRAISE ABADAR!!! PRAISE ABADAR!!!" goes the archbanker, his acolytes echoing him, and the crowd carries the news through the city.
Laughter and tears of joy well up on your faces, for your companion is saved.
But at what cost?
Kriger Eilifsson
As Malaswyn wakes, Kriger goes to make sure he's doing alright. Grinning as he see he's alive, "HA-HA! Good to have you back, Mal!" he slaps him on the shoulder. "Next time, Mal, if you would..." he looks at him real serious like, "Don't die. Okay?" He grins again, slapping him on the shoulder one more time as he bursts out in laughter. After he stops laughing, "Oh man, that was a good one," he says to no one in particular, still smiling. Then after a moment or two, "Seriously though. Don't."
"I'm Casseopex the Plentiful, by the way. Pleased to meet you my Lords!" as he grins with swollen red cheeks. "The arrangements you've mentioned will work fine. Also, I have brought several diamonds of exquisite cuts. I thought you might be interested in purchasing some..."
Kriger leans in toward Servayn, dropping his voice to a whisper, "He's plentiful alright," he tells him as he leans back out with a grin, winking.
Malaswyn Tyddewi
A low moan of grief and loss escapes me before I gather myself, "Oh, by her fire! Her fire!"
Pulling on Kriger's arms for support, I come to my feet and brush welling tears from my eyes and gather myself, "Thank you, Our work here is not yet done. I spoke to Charlabu..." My eyes wander, gleaming, before returning to the room.
Settling and realising the need for a littel formality, I smile at the corpulent Adabarian, "Thank you, I am grateful."
Malaswyn Tyddewi
I will sell my ring of protection to raise the funds for the diamond dust to dispell my negative levels. Then use commune to figure out what the wisps were on about; I'll think about questions...
Servayn Krolz
I will sell my ring of protection to raise the funds for the diamond dust to dispell my negative levels. Then use commune to figure out what the wisps were on about; I'll think about questions...
The ring is actually doing something, and selling it for half value is just setting your character unfairly back. The 2000 gp. Servayn has lying around doing nothing is much easier to replace at cost with any future earnings. We can worry about balancing out money later, when we get some. Yet another reason to hate wisps. They don't have pockets!

Fantastic.
We'll buy them from the Adabarians: let them feel like the raise dead was an even sweeter deal and we should be sure of a fair price and good quality diamond dust.
OM, would you like us to play that out or can I just call it?
Malaswyn Tyddewi
Having recovered my bearings and spoken with Servayn, I am bound in gratitude to him and keen to prove my worth to the kingdom.
I purchase the diamond dust from the Adabarians and restore my own powers. Once that is done, I discuss with my allies: I am considering petitioning Sarenrae for aid in understanding what foes might threaten the nation, "I can only ask a few questions and they must be clear, simple and direct: one so lowly as I does not have the right to debate or chew the fat with agents of Her divine fire. What would you like to know?"
Servayn Krolz
Recapping the Wisp's sing-song taunt;
"The so-called rulers of this land
Fail to understand that it is for naught
That they push away the fey.""For She has claimed her Dominion
She will bring the First and the Second
Land together, and the Second shall suffer."
"Who is 'She,' for one. Another undead Cyclops looking to rebuild whatever kingdom they had in these lands? And how we might foil her scheme and save our people from suffering whatever she means us to suffer by 'bringing her Dominion' into our lands."
"Do these have to be 'yes' or 'no' answers, or 'weal' and 'woe?'" he asks, unfamiliar with divination spells in general, and not knowing much of anything more sophisticated than augury in specific.
Kalsgrim Lodovka
"It is delightful to have you back, Malaswyn." The paladin looks like he wants to say more, but fails to have the words.
"Casseopex, if you are not too tired from your travels and calling upon your lord, would you please accompany me? I would like to introduce you to some of those who have spent the last couple of years helping us carve this fledgling barony from the wild."
If Casseopex is willing Kalsgrim will introduce him to those on the ruling council. After they have done so and arrangements have been made for their stay until some more homes are built, Kalsgrim will speak to Corso in private. "Keep an eye on him and his acolytes. I want to make sure they don't lose sight of defending civilization in their eagerness to fill their lord's earthly vaults."
Other Mastermind
Casseopex is grateful for the offer. He will accompany Kalsgrim and ask a lot of questions. Overall, he seems to be fairly good with people, and merchants are happy to see his cult so grandly represented.
Life resumes its normal course in the barony...
Has everyone given me their objectives for the next six months or so? If so, please let me know, if not, please provide them. Thanks!
Kalsgrim Lodovka
To refresh everyone's memories as to what they've posted for the next six months...
Kalsgrim's won't change based on the Abadaran's arrival or Malaswyn's raising, except for one thing. If an acolyte of Casseopex's wants to join Kal's little expedition when he is going to Varnhold and Tzatlzford, Kal would allow it but he won't proactively make the offer. If Cassepex himself tries to go, Kalsgrim will diplomatically dissuade him from doing so; if he insists, Kal will discreetly tell Kriger to take them on the roughest, most uncomfortable route possible
Outside of that, making sure we have adequate weaponry would be something else he'd check into. More than likely aiding in making weapons for the kingdom himself.
And then there's those nights that consist of drinking and sleeping the night and probably most of the morning away. :)
Major: Strengthen and develop the worship of Sarenrae in Frieland
Minor: Get to know the place and the people
Minor: Get to know Kalsgrim, Kriger and Servayn as they are out of 'the field'
Servayn Krolz
In light of recent rumors of succession woes up north, it might be best to focus on strengthening our relationships even more with locals, be they Varnholders, kobolds and / or Nomen centaurs, as any sort of shenanigans going up upstream of us might lead to trade disruptions (or perhaps even, being all heartlessly mercenary and exploitive about it, unpleasantness that we can capitalize upon, if, for instance, local troubles lead to a need for food to be exported northwards, and some refugees to be absorbed to boost our numbers of tradesfolk, etc...).
Servayn would never suggest fomenting unrest in our northerly neighbor to make for a good market year (no, no, he'd never dream of it!), but if the unrest is already happening, no reason to not A) see to it that it doesn't unfairly punish our own people and B) perhaps even see what we can do to ameliorate it (though trading excess food produced north to stave off food riots or whatever) or provide safe haven to those seeking bit less civil war going on in their backyard.
That won't really significantly change Servayn's plans for the summer, although he'll warn the communities he's doing diplomacy with that power is shifting around in its seat up north, and, as tends to happen, some innocent folk up there are likely to get squished by it's capacious butt in the process, so be ready for stuff that could affect their own trade, etc. concerns.
Malaswyn Tyddewi
In light of recent events, Malaswyn's attitude will include a renewed humility and a desire to help others: he will spread the faith and get to know the people by contributing to their lives.
Other Mastermind
Spring and summer wash over the booming barony. Every week, there is something new to report. Not that you are around every week. Indeed, as you spend a lot of time venturing out, coming back to Frieland remains a shocking experience. New faces, new buildings, new problems...
Relations with the Nomen remain on the sunny side, thanks to the work of Servayn and Malaswyn, but it's hard to say how things will go if Varnhold expands west.
The kobolds are discovering a new way of life it seems, and the exploitation of the mines, with frequent trade with Providence, along with the delicate efforts of Servayn to keep things smooth, brings focus and recognition to their work. One of the gates of the new city wall was even designed by them, with clever traps and defence position. It is now called Kobold Gate.
The cult of Sarenrae has risen somewhat, in part due to the notoriety brought by Malaswyn's raising, but it seems clear that the abadarans got the sweetest part of that deal. They even have asked if they could visit the Sootscales...
Exploration east and south allows the discovery of new territory. Of note, two set of waterfalls, one so beautiful Kalsgrim named it after Erastil, a tough scrape with a Roc; the peak where it was brought down now called Talon Peak, and a pass through the mountains, discovered thanks to Kriger's keen senses, and named in his honor.
The tour of the land by Kalsgrim also has a positive impact. Most folks they meet mention how nice it is to finally meet the lords, and that they are nice folks after all, with their heads in the right place, and their hearts even more so.
The Barony of Frieland, two years after it's creation.
Investigations on the poem reveals but little, except for a tale on a dark fey who tried to rise and was brought down, forever cursing the world and scheming to rule the land... Details are really vague and fuzzy, unfortunately, as is everything related to the First World.
News from Restov arrive at the end of summer. Jamandi's father finally passed, after months of terrible agony. Jamandi has taken over the leadership of the Swordlords and has called a week of mourning for his father's death, which is to be followed by a week of celebrations for his new leadership.
Restov will be the place to be!
