Servayn grew up on the streets, playing distraction for an aging rogue, drawing attention and sympathy while ‘papa’ picked their pockets. The old man never claimed to be his true father, only to have found him, but he knew that the old man had his secrets, and that the name he used in private was not the name of his birth. Despite their unusual life, they had a small apartment, and Graven, the only name he knew for his mentor, never seemed to lack for coin, even when begging was thin. Servayn always had plenty to eat, and when he grew too large and healthy in appearance to make a credible ‘urchin waif,’ he proposed moving on to more elaborate crimes, only for Graven to slap his face and say that he was meant for better things. He struck the old man in a rage that seemed to boil his very blood, and recoiled to see that a shadowy beast with glowing red eyes behind his mentor, hissing. As he saw the man who had raised him lifting himself up from the floor of their tiny home, he heard the soft words, “Your blood is true.” and dropped to his knees, overcome by searing pain as the glyph that marked his destiny branded itself upon his forehead for all to see. To this day, he does not know what Graven meant by that, but their life of petty crime ended, and he began to learn of new things, being shown trinkets and treasures from a secret chest below their home that he had never known existed. He handed silk-wrapped items bearing the heraldry of Brevoy, including the sorts of things that no common pickpocket should have, a signet, a tabard and a fine silver-bound drinking horn carved of a strange ivory that was warm to the touch, that he later learned was made of dragon-horn! He learned to recognize the touch of items that carried magical spells, and his mentor instructed him in the arcane powers that lay within him, only now awakening. From his mentor, who revealed more and more of his skills as a herald and skald, he learned to call upon the hissing beast he had so briefly seen in his moment of anger, to bind it to his will. The first time the creature appeared, swirling like reddish smoke and coalescing into a scale-armored brute resembling some unholy union of panther and dragon, the color of coals and dark blood, he nearly quit the room, but his mentor’s calm voice held him steady, as the old man said that he was no stranger to such things, and that the terrible beast he had called forth was but an infant among its kind, sworn to serve those of his line in all things. It was his destiny to command such a creature, and to restore old glories to the world, the old man assured him. Graven said that he had shown Servayn all that he could, and that it was time he learned the ways of war. Despite his early growth, he was only fifteen years old at this time, when Graven took him to the temple of Gorum. He spent the next three years serving in the temple, perplexed that his mentor had seemingly sold him off to the temple, where he was often left bruised and weary at the end of a rough day of training. Valki, a Gorumite adept of Kellish descent, who taught him to pleat his hair into locks to cushion his head when a helm sat upon it, among other things, was his new teacher, and she clearly had a history of some sort with Graven, who would come and go, although months would often pass between visits. It was no easy thing, but from his new teacher, he learned the value of arms, but also the ways of polite speech, as the temple taught that the man who fights every man he meets is a fool, not a champion, a valuable lesson indeed for Servayn, as the storms of youthful energy and temperament were unleashed upon the young man. Graven meant for him to learn, and he did, the value of *not* calling upon his birthright, of keeping his counsel and recognizing that there are things of which it is not wise to speak openly and of walking away when the moment is not opportune. Alongside another initiate of the Gorumite faith, Janku, Servayn trained, and the young acolyte passed his final tests of faith and service, seizing for himself the right to be called cleric, while Servayn practiced arms and measured speech alongside him. Three months passed, with no visit from Graven, and Servayn walked to the apartment they had shared for so many years to find it rented out to a new tenant, who knew nothing of the old man who had lived there before. Valki knew nothing of his disappearance, but urged Servayn to consider that now was the time to seek his fortune, that he was not meant to serve in a temple, but had a greater destiny ahead of him. It had just been announced that the ruling families of Rostland were seeking adventurous souls to reclaim the Stolen Lands to their south, and he took this as a sign that he was meant to leave the temple behind, taking only Graven and Valki’s teachings, and walk a path of his own choosing. Things Servayn does not know;
Months later, he stole the child away, to raise on the streets of a distant city, hoping to groom the heir to the line of Rorgavia. Option 2) Graven is a long-sighted schemer of the Orlavsky family, which has suffered due to the machinations of house Surtova. He has taken to grooming potential ‘spoilers’ to work against their plans for dominion. Servayn is but one of a half-dozen children that he has been cultivating, each believing themselves to be ‘rightful heirs’ to some vanished house, so that if any attain fame or success, it will work against Surtovan interests, and as the Surtovan agents move against these ‘heirs to the Rorgavan throne,’ he will mark their faces, and possibly remove them from the board… Summoned Celestial Riding Dog (Augmented);
