"Ok, so we have: the Stag Lord party, the witch-light, the kobolds, research on the tzut... the tzaztzl... the tazt... the z-things! bring Ox to the temple of Erastil. If all else fail, send Ox north."

He looks around to see if there are other ideas, then says: "As Lukasz mentioned, the items retrived on our journey need to be studied by those versed in the arcane arts. Myself, I will look at them to see if anything stands out as valuable."

"We all agree that taking on the Stag Lord with reduced resources is risky. But we also all agree that after the encounter with the gnome, time is running faster, and he might actually send troops here while we are away. It's not an easy dilemma..."

Looking through the window, feeling the warmth of the sun setting over the forest and the stew settling in his stomach, Corso adds: "It's good to be in!

Appraise on our loot (I'll ask Servayn to help me focus (guidance): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20

(AC 18, hp 15 of 77) Summoner 9

He was a halfling, not a gnome, and his spells were both potent and subtle. When we encounter him again, he must be taken down before he can speak, or whistle. Servayn corrects, just in case the party encounters a gnome in the future, he wouldn't want Lukasz and Kalsgrim to attack the man, thinking it is the Stag Lord's lieutenant.

Rodent dies first. Ember adds, apparently having a lower opinion of the little fellow.

Servayn casts guidance at Corso's request, calling up arcane forces to whisper information in his ear as he views the items. Such forces being what they are, some tiny percentage of this information might even be relevant or useful...

So, our goals remaining include:

-Recover Svetlana’s ring.
-Defeat the Stag Lord.
-Deal with the mites.
-Arrange a truce with the kobolds.
-Collect fangberries for Bokken.
-Deal with the spiders and the witch-light.
-Take Johd Kavken to the Erastil temple.
-Deal with the boggards.

I think we really have two choices: mites or Stag Lord. Perhaps we can travel with the priest to the southeast, taking him to the temple. If there is any sort of boon, it may help us with the Stag Lord. Then we could head south and south-east, heading toward where we believe the Stag Lord to be. Or, we could swing east, visit Bokken, then go south to the unexplored hex and the mites hex.

I am torn between two choices, friends. What do you say? Do we move south to engage the Stag Lord in his castle or do we wipe out the mites first? The bandits are preying on humans around here and hunting us, that is true. But the mites are preying on the kobolds who I think are no less deserving of our aid. Also, the kobolds travel this region wide and far; perhaps if we take care of the danger on their doorstep, they may help us with scouting the Stag Lord’s keep or tracking down the bands that are roaming, letting us get the drop on them for a change!

Regarding Clip Clop, Kal will take the cold iron longsword and leave his old scale armor, his old longsword and his old +2 ST composite longbow.

Any additional information from my appraise roll?

"Wise words Mylord Kalsgrim. I would say the mites. But we need to take stock of our gains and losses first. Do we know if anything is with arcane auras in our gains? What about the spellbook? Anything good in there? To me, we should bring the priest and Ox to the temple, and move from there, with Garick bringing Ox north if the temple can't bring him back."

Male Human Cleric 1 (Unholy Barrister)

"Yes, Our main goal should be to get Ox back on his feet and in fighting shape. So I say we first take him with the priest to the temple and see what can be done there. Afterwords, we can worry about the mites or the Staglord. The halfling might know a bit more that he can take back but they still don't know who we are beyond a few names and Kesten and his men are still here to defend the outpost." Lukasz says before taking a drink from his water and continue to eat more of the food that Svetlana has provided. "One concern I do have though is the number of people we have added to this outpost's populace. I'm sure Svetlana is quite the capable cook, but adding any more would possibly put a strain on the outpost resources in terms of the amount of food and water that this outpost might need."

Then how about first thing in the morning we head to the temple of Erastil that we reclaimed. If our wandering priest can connect with Old Deadeye there, perhaps he can help Ox. If nothing helps Ox there, we can send him back north with Garrick to see if the House Lodovka can do anything for them, or the priest of Erastil there that was a mentor to Garrick and I in our younger days.

Has anyone examined our findings to see if any of it is of particular value, or if it is enchanted?

Have we given Oleg and Svetlana the moon radishes and taz hides/heads yet?

Janku excitedly stands knocking his chair over backwards as he does so. "What"! "You guys are still considering messing around and not going after the Stag Lord"!

"I swear I believe you'd all swim across a burning river to comfort a stag that lost the tip of an antler, than take care of the real problem".

"I've had enough of this tree hugging, berry picking, animal snuggling, every thing in it's time pussy-footing around".

"We have an obvious threat to the entire region, we know where he is, he has struck out against us and all we want to do is help some invalid old man find a place to die...And Ox...I miss him". "He was a true believer in Gorum, then he began to question his faith and look at him now". "While I wish as much as any of us for him to jump up and begin to march...He isn't, and if we wait for him to arise before we move on, we may never do so"! "Perhaps he needs the sound, and smell of battle to revive him from this mysterious trance".

"Well do what you want". "Start your own peace garden, and petting zoo, I'm going after the Stag Lord, and I'm leaving tomorrow". "Now who's with me". Janku then turns and glares at the group.

Diplomacy (1d20+7=14)

Janku's speech might have been more stirring if not for the glob of jam clinging to the end of his nose.

Janku's mouth drops open, and he stares at Kal when he mentions that the Kobalds area as deserving of help as the humans".

Servayn hands what's left of his meal to Ember and steps off to check the items Corso is pointing at for the auras of magic.

As he does, he says softly to the Rogue, I agree that we should have faced the Stag Lord after the ambush against us, a week or more back, while we still had our full numbers, but I begin to fear that fulfilling our charter and building anything here will get increasingly difficult.

Kalsgrim stands and slams his fist on the table. Of course I know the threat of the Stag Lord! Nothing weighs heavier on my mind more except my fallen friend! he shouts, gesturing to where Ox is convalesing. Have you ever stabbed a spider with an egg sack on it? You may kill the spider, but the egg sack spews hundreds of smaller spiders, each of which scrambles away to become its own predator. I believe that is the risk we take here. There are numerous bands of outlying bandits that are hunting us and still operating. We need help finding them so we can slay them. That way they can't bolster the Stag Lord's defense or stake out on their own once he is slain. I still believe the kobolds, who range far and wide in this area, may be able to help us find those bands of cowards if we can get the threat of the mites off of them. Battle awaits us, friend. More battle than you can hope for, and I know that is a lot! And if you are intent on charging after the Stag Lord tomorrow, I won't let you go alone.

Corso is able to appraise the prices of some of the trinkets gathered from the tatzlwyrm den. One of the scroll tubes is a map, the other is labeled exploding runes, but no one has opened it yet.

During the dinner Oleg looks over the Tatzlwyrms, "You know, I almost thought these were myths. I'll have to stuff it and hang it above the fireplace. Quite the adventure you lads went on, sorry to hear about Ox, Svetlana and I will do our best to watch over him. Thanks to you boys I've seen more trappers and traders than in the last tree months combined." He stands up and heads into the house.

While he's gone Svetlana hurries over and collects the radishes, "Oleg will be so excited...he simply loves when I make moon radish soup. Here, like I promised, a reward." She places a pair cracked jade spheres on the table, "These are a pair of trinkets passed down in my family, one will guide your hand in the forest, and the other will guide your mind. Oh, I can't wait for tonight..." green cracked sphere ioun stones (+1 Survival) and (+1 K. Nature)

"Like last time, we looked over your goods, and including the tatzlwyrms here's your pay," he says after coming back out with five wallets. For ease of math, Kal, Serv, Corso, Luka, and Janku each get 200g.

The priest listens carefully before speaking up, "Maybe if you describe the location of this hidden temple to my new acquaintance, Vekkel, he might be able to guide me there. Surely a hunter of his age and skill would have no trouble navigating the woods for a day or two."

"Check out a hidden temple I've somehow manages to miss for sixty years? You bet, Father Kavken, I'd be glad to help you find it and get settled in. It sounds like that Garrick lad and his brother would be coming a long too. Perhaps Ol' Antlers will bless all of us," says the old trapper over his soup loudly.

Janku's comments totally cracked me up!

Wow! What conviction! It is as if the world is black and white to him. My cousin would not survive life in court... Well, that doesn't seem to be the life he's aiming for. Maybe as his ambition for a church grows, the need for nuance will come by itself...

Corso sits in silence, eating his warm soup slowly, as he feels tension growing around the table. Finally, he feels he needs to chime in. "We all agree something needs to be done, and soon."

He pauses, to make eye contact with everyone, smiling.

"We disagree on the exact way in which to proceed. In this, we only show that we are indeed humans, with values and opinions!"

"Master Vekkel, if you and Garrick could accompany both Father Kavlen and Ox to the temple, that would certainly be a great boon for us. Now, all we need, really, is to clarify the sense of urgency around our two important options: the mites or the Stag Lord."

It seems as though just saying it seems to make him reflect and find a course.

"Well, presented this way, wouldn't it seem that the passage of time leads to making the Stag Lord that much stronger and the kobolds that much in need of exterior help? I know I have agreed with you Lord Kalsgrim, but Janku's word rang true to me. I fear one day the stag Lord will turn on the outpost, as more and more of his men are detained there, and it might not be a day where we are there to protect it..."

"Janku, I will go with you, but let us make sure we are at our utmost for the battle coming up. Already, our forces are depleted."

Well, if Ox is getting the care he needs, I see no reason to stay here past dawn, other than Svetlana's fine cusine. Let's get some sleep and head out. Do we want to swing east first to get some potions from Bokken, or just head straight to where we believe the Stag Lord's castle is based on Tuck's description?

That's right, where is Tuck?

Tuck looks up from his meal. Simply being overlooked in during the excited planning. "I could show you the fastest way if you like. Though Keston may need an extra hand now that there's four prisoners. Five if you count myself."

Male Human Cleric 1 (Unholy Barrister)

Having had enough of the loud-spoken, tunnel-visioned cleric, Lukasz says, "So instead of rallying some allies and doing what we can to help ensure a victory when we face the Stag Lord and his FORT of brigands, you want to charge in, sword aswinging and pray that Gorum gives you whatever fate he thinks you deserve. That's not only suicidal, but down right stupid. If that is the plan that you propose then you can count me out. We don't know his exact numbers or capabilities. That was why I recommended we take a few detours, rally our resources and use those resources for the assault on the Stag lord's fort. Then we at least have a better chance of dealing with whatever surprises are in store for us. The kobolds are on the way to where we think his fort might be and any allies we can get in this area, the better it would be for not only relations but for stopping the Staglord, which is why you want to go and attack the Staglord in the first place."

"You have no idea of what is at the Stag Lords fort, as you've never got close to it". "In fact you've avoided it at all costs".

"It almost makes me think you are in league with him". "Perhaps you are intentionally delaying him till he can reinforce, because he's not got enough help there". "Perhaps he has instructed you to delay us so that he and his minions can pick us off one-by-one".

"You accuse me of having tunnel vision, but that is better than no vision". "I intend to do something". "If you wish to command your nation of Kobolds then do so...then you can be the bravest in your kingdom".

Janku's face begins to redden, and the veins pop out in his head as he gesticulates during his impassioned speech.

Then calming down. "You mistake action for lack of caution". "Of course we will scout the place before we go in". "We have people capable of that, but we must not lose focus". "Some of us could probably even get inside the organization and help us out...Tuck, didn't you mention that the Stag Lord didn't even know who all his allies were"? "And I know we've got a few of those weird pins that identify his bandits".

"He is the major threat, and I won't let your cowardice stand in the way of his defeat".

By the way, I hope you're enjoying this in character difference of opinion as much as I am. If you feel I need to tone it down, just say so.

Male Human Cleric 1 (Unholy Barrister)

"Just because I am speaking words of caution, that makes me in league with the Stag Lord and his men? That makes even less sense than attacking while we are down at least one man. Now I really do believe that your logic is guided more by the blade than the brain. None of my words has suggested we ignore the threat that the Stag Lord presents. I am simply suggesting that we spend a bit of time gathering what resources we have before attacking a fort with what...four or five men? Get Ox up and moving; at least meet with the kobolds on our way to the fort instead making a bee line for the Staglord's; Get a lay of the terrain and come up with some sort of battle strategy. You talk of moving against the Stag Lord without even mentioning what we can do to take care of one of the most important aspects of battle: preparation." Lukasz says, his voice rising slightly as the battle cleric's stubbornness begins to finally grate on the sorcerer's patience.

No problems on my end. Chaotic characters aren't meant to mesh well at times and Lukasz sees Janku's outbursts as the response of a brash man who thinks that swinging a sword is all that is needed to stop an enemy.

And perhaps you are in league with the Stag Lord and are trying to lure us into a trap! See, we can make accusations too. We want the same thing: the Stag Lord slain and his creepy helm as a trophy! Or, is it that you fear to face the might of the mites? They are both menaces that need to be dealt with. Let's go do it.

"Fine!! "Do it your way like we always have". Janku then looks at Ox's prone form". "And it's been so successful". "You would have murdered a repentant man, he glances at Tuck, and the whole party almost died". "Your leadership leaves a lot to be desired".

"Perhaps under your leadership, we won't even have to lift a blade". "You want to fight little things instead of the true threat". "Who cares if the Mites and Kobolds wipe each other out". "They are not a threat at this time, the Stag Lord is". "The Stag lord will probably die of old age, before you are brave enough to face him".

"The Lord in Iron grows impatient with patching up your errors in judgement".

"And did you even listen to me state that we needed to scout out the Stag Lord's compound before attacking, or were you too busy listening to the sound of your own honeyed voice"? "You sound like a brat in the street..."Oh yeah! Well you too".

"I shall take the Stag Lords Keep with the help of the Lord in Iron, and any here who might wish to accompany me". "We shall send you an invitation to show up when it's safe".

Janku then storms for the room. He will not spend another night under the roof with the Paladin, preferring to sleep in the stable.

Just waiting on you guys, enjoying the debate.

Male Human Cleric 1 (Unholy Barrister)

Knowing that he would be unable to get the Gorumite to see his point of view, he simply lets the cleric storm out and allows a few moments of silence to pass before saying, "Let's get back to planning, shall we?"

Kalsgrim will step away from the table once Janku is outside. Clearly the Iron Priest and I are not going to see eye to eye on this. And his comments strike a chord true; I doubt as well my leadership so far. He looks around the table at the remaining three. Any of you could probably do a better job. Talk about it without the passion that Janku and I bring to the table and decide our next course of action. I will abide by the decision that you arrive at, and lend all of my strength and the strength Erastil grants me to aid in the cause.

He turns to walk away, but pauses and turns back. I never had any aspirations of leadership in coming to this land. I merely wished to make it safe for honest folk. Ox and Garick knew of my family's background and treated me as their leader, and look at what it has accomplished. I hereby recuse myself as any sort of leader of this band and this mission, though I will not tolerate Janku’s bloodthirstiness in that role. It has to fall to someone with a cooler head. It has to fall to one of you.

With that he retires for the evening. He’ll be ready before dawn to ride out if that is the decision made.

Male Human Cleric 1 (Unholy Barrister)

Not really expecting Kalsgrim to react in that way, Lukasz looks around a little nervously before finally saying, "Well, you already know what I think our next course of actions should be. We shouldn't try to confront the Staglord until we have all of our group in healthy shape. So I say we do whatever we can to help Ox recover. While we do that, we can move south, dropping off the priest and Ox at the hidden temple before veering southward to either meet up with the kobolds or work our way along the border of our charter to get a lay of the land that surrounds the Staglord's keep. What say you all?"

Ouch! Did we just go from two "leaders" to none in the time it takes to say "Stag Lord"?"

After a pause, he resumes: "Well, I guess the temple, then the kobolds. But even though his way and means are wrong, I still feel we should go straight for the Stag Lord. I don't see that Ox will get better in time, nor that the kobold will change the balance of power. We have the silver stags, we should use them to try and get in, if we don't see the gn- halfling, sorry, around. I don't like that he knows where to hurt us and we won't be there. That is my major concern. Otherwise, I'm fine with either plan. And someone should tell the twin not to let the doors so opened. Who knows what's coming our way these days!"

"Ember, do you want to be our leader?"

(AC 18, hp 15 of 77) Summoner 9

Ember looks up, Yes! and a half-second later Servayn just as loudly says, No!

More quietly, Servayn says, Janku's intemperance is well-known, and while I agree we need to move against the Stag Lord, and should have already, this seems as ill-omened a time as any, with our forces depleted. As a Paladin, I suspect that temperance is one of Kalsgrim's many required virtues, and I do not blame his temperance for the ill fortune we have suffered of late.

If Turk is still present, he asks the man if he will find Kalgrim, and bring him back to discuss tactics, and waits for the man to leave the room before saying to Corso and Lukasz;

I am not comfortable discussing plan against his former master in front of Turk. Let us move against the Stag Lord, preferably with some sort of plan in place. Can we lure them from their fort, or set it on fire from a distance, so that we do not face them in their place of strength?

I fear that donning the silver amulets and attempting to infiltrate will just get us slaughtered, as so many have already escaped to inform the Stag Lord of our appearance, from each of the last encounters we've had with his men...

Male Human Cleric 1 (Unholy Barrister)

Tapping his cheek with his index finger in thought, Lukasz says, "Hmm, maybe not infiltration as most are thinking of it, but we can still try to get into the fort. If I am correct, the gnome is the only one who has been able to see some of our faces and he has yet to see us all. One thing to think of is those not identified disguise ourselves as bandits, come up with a good cover and infiltrate the Stag Lord's fort as new blood. Just something we can think about while we head that way."

As Tuck is out, Corso adds: "I'm not keen on disguise. We'll be separated, most likely and anything can happen. No, I say we scout first and decide when we finally have an idea of what we're facing. Meanwhile, we should get a few trick items, like the ring to remain unseen from animals. As a scout, it would come in handy, for sure, or tanglefoot bags, as they are a quick way to get a few mooks out of the way. Tactics should focus on splitting their numbers. We need to see the terrain to fully exploit it."

"I don't like the way it splits the party, but I say we go Stag first, then get a date with the hot purple kobold."

"I hope Kalsgrim takes it the right way. So far, I found he was doing a great job. Being a leader doesn't mean you need to be right. You can't have a leader without followers. It's a lesson he'll need to learn."

"And we should all avoid phrases like: 'Who's with me?'"

(AC 18, hp 15 of 77) Summoner 9

I am, by nature, mistrustful of authority. And yet, I find that Kalsgrim has been nothing but respectful of our opinions and viewpoints, and afforded us all a chance to discuss and choose the paths we've taken. My world is somewhat askew, as the bastion of law is giving us our own head, while the champion of the free heart has been dogmatically ordering us that we 'must' do this or must not do that and making declarations and demands. I'm not afraid to admit that my expectations have been thrown into disarray...

Servayn is legitimately questioning his alignment choice. Chaotic Neutral made sense as a waif on the streets, living in the shadows of a society that seemed to care nothing for him, and designed to keep him hungry and scared. Now, he's finding that the 'do what you must' and 'take to survive' mindset of his childhood isn't serving him well...

DM

Spoiler:
first thing in the morning, Janku will saddle up his horse, and take one of the Silver Stag Lord pins. He will then head towards the Stag Lords domain unless stopped. His intentions are to try to convince the SL that he has left his companions and decided to join the "winning team". He will then wait for a chance to take the SL unaware (coup de grace) if possible. This is his plan anyway as he knows he can't take on their might alone. He will then attempt to take control of the bandits and turn them into an army with better intentions. Of course all that is subject to change by morning, but just so you know what he is thinking

Kalsgrim returns reluctantly when summoned. He is sullen at first, but eventually joins in the conversation.

As reluctant as I am to admit it, I think Janku may be right.

With a heavy sigh, he continues. If we raid the Stag Lord's keep now, it may accomplish a few things. With many groups out searching for us, his forces may be a bit low right now at his base, making it a little lower risk for us. And if we strike right at his very home, it may force him to pull back his forces in defense. Either they will contract, or we will kick the hornets nest and they'll come out where they may be easier to get at.

Finally, I think we are actively at war with the bandits, but we've yet to engage the mites. It may make more sense to finish one confrontation before beginning another. We don't want to unwittingly create new allies for the Stag Lord against us. It will be challenging enough as it is.

Kalsgrim looks sheepish as he concludes I think Janku is right. I think we need to go after the Stag Lord, quickly and decisively. We probably shouldn't even detour to take Ox to the temple; we can leave that to Garick.

Male Human Cleric 1 (Unholy Barrister)

"Yes, that seems to be where we are headed, but we had better think of a way we can tell Janku that without him launching into another self-righteous speeches or he is gonna wake with 'I'm a yellow coward' painted on the back of his armor." Lukasz says this with a glint of mischief in his eyes, as if wanting the battle cleric to give him a reason to lash out in his own fashion.

"I say let the night bring wisdom then. We'll be there early morning and it will just be settled. When he sees us ready to go also, he'll be happy and won't feel like stepping up on a box."

"Anyway, if he starts, let's just talk about tactics and avoid confrontation. Deflection, deflection, deflection. Work will keep his mind busy and off preaching."

Very well. We'll leave before dawn then. With luck, if anyone is spying, no one watching this outpost will see us leaving. We may even catch Janku by surprise and he'll have to hurry to catch up to us!

Kal smiles to himself at the thought of the priest charging out after them to pursue the course he put forth!

Kal will ask Svetlana to be awakened well before dawn so they can get ready to go. After that, he'll try retiring for the night again.

27th of Pharast, 4710

The birds in the fields around the trading post have barely awoken when the group silently gathers in the yard. Svetlana has prepared new packages of trail rations (14 days for each), including the gold from purchased goods (80 gp for each), and any items requested the night before.

Tuck breaks the tense silence, "Kalsgrim, will you be wanting me along as a guide? Or maybe I should go along with Garick and Vekkel?"

Barging in on the conversation, entirely aware of his rudeness, Corso blurts out: "Actually Tuck, we need you at the fort. There are too many prisoners here and this place can't move, it must be defended. The two teams heading out can always withdraw if they face danger."

Corso looks sideways at Kalsgrim. Well, I guess I just told him in so many ways that I find him too lenient sometimes...

By the way, all of the PC's got up around the same time. What with all of you trying to get up before the others, and you know...sharing the same guest house.

Actually, I think Janku went outside to sleep, but that's okay.

Before we go, we'll make sure Garick and Vek are good taking Ox and the priest to the old temple. Then we'll be off.

Unless anyone has a need for potions, we will head out early going straight south. We aren't really exploring at this point, but heading straight toward the forest to make good time to the Stag Lord's castle.

Around nine in the morning the group reaches the edge of the forest.

After two hours the ride through the forest is interrupted by a loud snap, followed shortly with the high pitched scream of a wounded horse. Lukasz's mount tumbles underneath him and begins to thrash and kick madly. A bear trap has sprung and burried it's teeth deep in the horse's leg. The sorcerer is thrown to the ground roughly.

Dismounting with haste, Corso searches the areas around, crouching, for any sign of an intruder, bow ready...

Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10

The forest is clear, but Corso does see the trap is attached by chain to a nearby tree.

Was Lukasz hurt when thrown? If not, Kal will start with a lay on hands on the mount.

Heal 1d6 ⇒ 3

Lukasz is fine, if stunned a bit. The horse calms at the paladins touch. Feeling the racing pulse under his hands Kalsgrim can tell it is clearly distressed by the trap on its leg.

A little startled by the fall, Lukasz simply scampers to his feet and over the Maribel, the horse still panicked from the pain, Lukasz puts the lessons he took from Ox to use, speaking in a soothing voice and doing what he could to calm poor Maribel. "Shhh shhh shhh. there there now, we'll have you out of that in no time." he whispers to Maribel as he gently lays his hand on the horses neck.

Handle Animal:1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8

Despite Lukasz's best efforts the horse begins to panic again. She kicks at those around her and attempts to stand, falling to the ground after putting weight on the trapped leg. Kalsgrim and Lukasz barely avoid a dangerous braining from her shoes. Marible is neighing quietly and keeps slowly moving her wounded limb pulling at the chain leading to the tree.

"Why don't you remove the trap from her leg, before comforting her". "Then I'll heal her", Janku speaks for the first time today, his eyes puffy from sleeping poorly in the stable.
