Setomi |
Ok...that sounds good to me. Having never actually seen a Tengu, it makes sense she would be confused...unless someone tells her otherwise.
Searching the creatures, Setomi looks up and says, "I think they are what my people called tengu. I remember some stories my mother told me about them, but that is all."
Does she find anything on the bodies?
Sorin Nicusor |
"I think I remember a story Ameiko told me that had Tengu's in it but I can't quite recall what it was about; we were both much younger at the time."
Sorin will try to open the inner gates, preferrably without too much noise from the rusty hinges.
DM Hamied |
The creatures were not wearing clothes or pouches/pockets, and do not seem to be carrying anything. If they have personal belongings, they may be stashed elsewhere.
The latches come free rather easily, and Sorin pushes the gates open with as little creaking as he can manage. Fog spills in from the courtyard and hangs at your feet. Ahead of you, you can make out the dark shapes of the buildings within the walls of Brinewall Castle, but it is difficult to discern detail.
Almar Ashfield* |
Perception check:1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
Almar doesn't seem to hear anything unusual:"Let's consider facts: we know this place is guarded and that suggest a greater concentration of forces in the rest of the fortress. I suggest we explore the walls and then move to the main building"
Sorin Nicusor |
"No, I didn't," Sorin says, "but your senses are far sharper than mine. Maybe someone did hear the fight. Hopefully, this mist will be as much a hindrance to them as it is to us. We either move forward carefully or wait here to see what shows up. Neither option is particularly attractive."
"I suggest we move forward slowly and keep our heads down. I don't think it wise to dally in one place for too long."
Setomi |
yup....it cut it off again!! Dont know what is going on with these boards lately!! My post notification on the main page just keeps adding to the post total (now upto 9)..very weird!
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11
Stealth: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22
Again with the good/bad rolls!! LOL
DM Hamied |
I've been having all kinds of issues too. I hope they get it sorted out soon.
Perception - 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Stealth - 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
Setomi ventures out into the foggy courtyard, but it seems to thicken even as she moves forward. Thinking she hears a hint of movement, she whirls around, but catches sight of nothing.
You can eventually make your way to an opposite wall/building if you wish to keep moving, but your early scouting tells you very little.
DM Hamied |
Stealth - 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
Setomi steps silently through the thick fog to find a set of massive doors before her, twice the height of the main gate. The hall that they open onto must be great indeed. Though the rest of the castle, and indeed the village, are worn by weather and long years, these doors seem wonderfully preserved and very sturdy.
To the east, the gap between the heart of the castle and the outer wall narrows, but the mist yet obscures your vision.
Setomi |
Stealth: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28
Continuing to move as silently as possible, Setomi quickly checks the main doors then moves on. She come to an otherwise blank wall, but notices something seems off about the area. She marks it in her memory, then continues to complete her circuit of the courtyard and get back to the others in the gatehouse.
DM Hamied |
Setomi
Keeping your steps light, you continue to slide along, inches from the cold stone, until you come to another perpendicular wall. It seems to come too soon to be the outer wall, but you follow it south until it leads you to an arched opening. You are able to see through rather easily, as the mist is strangely not as thick here.
This smaller courtyard contains what may have once been a fine garden, but neglect has seen the death of the flowers that once grew here. Several broken benches complete the sense of loss. An area in the middle of the old cloister has been cleared of debris, and is marred by numerous bloodstains.
You see no movement and hear no sound. Even still, you are aware of an ominous presence from within the cloister.
I wasn't sure if your circuit of the courtyard would include this smaller cloister or not. It's not a building, but it seems to you to be a separate area. I wanted to give you a sense of it and let you decide before I returned you to the gatehouse.
Almar, Raziel, and Sorin
It is hard not to imagine some menace lurking in the fog, yet Sorin senses no evil as he concentrates.
Setomi |
Setomi relays all that she has discovered, including the secret door and the small courtyard where she had the creepy feeling.
"The secret door looked not to have been used in some time. And the big entry doors might be a problem to open, due to their size and age. I suggest we go through the secret door."
DM Hamied |
I'd hoped to post earlier, but today was nuts. Just started rehearsals, so I will run into similar difficulty from time to time.
Following Setomi's lead, you move carefully through the fog.
DM Hamied |
Raziel's keen ears pick up the sound of skittering coming through the dense fog.
Because of Raziel's superb check, he hears the assailants coming through the fog well before they are upon the group. Assuming he speaks a word of warning, it will negate their surprise round.
The map below represents the part of the castle courtyard that you are currently moving through. The line at the bottom of squares Q2 and R2 represents the secret door that Setomi is leading you towards. Because you have a moment before your foes attack, you have some opportunity to set up. Raziel is sure that they are coming from the northwest. Where would you like to place yourselves on the map?
Sorin Nicusor |
Sorry for the delay. I'm in the Cleveland area and we caught the edge of Sandy and lost power for over 72 hours (something we had been assured wouldn't happen). Still trying to get everything straightened out at home but will be able to post again shortly.
DM Hamied |
Perception - 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26
Ettercap 2:
Perception - 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27
They both nailed their Perception checks, Setomi. Sorry :(
Initiative:
Almar - 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18
Raziel - 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13
Setomi - 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12
Sorin - 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
Ettercap 1 - 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
Ettercap 2 - 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22
One of the creatures spits a thick wad of webbing at Setomi.
Attack (Web) vs. Touch AC - 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
Setomi is Entangled. As a standard action, she can take make an Escape Artist or Strength check against a DC of 15 in order to escape, and end the condition.
As the sticky webbing wraps itself around the ninja's body, the creature closes with her.
Ettercap 1 moves to J4.
The other creature ambles forward, moving around Setomi for the flank, then attempting to sink its fangs into her.
Ettercap 2 moves to L4 and makes an attack against Setomi.
Attack (Bite) vs AC (Flat-Footed) - 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21
If it hits, it deals1d6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8 points of damage, and Setomi must make a DC 15 Fortitude Save, or take 1d2 ⇒ 2 points of Dexterity damage.
Ettercap 1
Ettercap 2
Sorin
Almar
Raziel
Setomi
Sorin is up next.
Sorin Nicusor |
Despite the warning, Sorin is caught off-guard by the speed of the creatures attack. Seeing Setomi temporarily immobilzed, Sorin rushes forward to attack.
Sorin moves to K6 hoping to keep the creatures attention away from Setomi (as I recall, Setomi can't provide a flanking bonus while entangled since she doesn't threaten any squares). He aims his attack at the back creature in J4.
Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27
Damage: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Confirm: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
Damage: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Damage: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
11 damage if the Confirm failed, 32 if it succeeded.
DM Hamied |
The Entangled condition doesn't prevent Setomi from flanking, but I don't believe that she can do so until her turn. She is considered flat-footed until then, since she has not yet acted in the initiative.
With a mighty stroke, Sorin brings the blade of his glaive down upon the creature's shoulder, slicing through bone and sinew as if it were nothing. As he tugs his polearm free from the monster's chest, black blood erupts onto the cold ground.
Ettercap 1
Ettercap 2
Sorin
Almar
Raziel
Setomi
Almar is up next.
DM Hamied |
I'm going to go ahead and take Almar's action for him, as it's been 24 hours since his turn began.
Almar slides his rapier from its scabbard, and with a quick step forward, he thrusts at the creature before him.
Almar moves to M4, drawing his rapier as part of the move. He then makes an attack against Ettercap 2.
Attack (Rapier) - 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26
If it hits, it deals 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3 points of piercing damage.
Critical Confirmation - 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10
If it hits, it deals an additional 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4 points of damage.
Not a crit, but a hit nevertheless.
The point of Almar's silver blade sinks into the creature's thigh, and it releases a high pitched shriek.
Ettercap 2
Sorin
Almar
Raziel
Setomi
Raziel is up next, but I still need a Fortitude Save from Setomi.
DM Hamied |
Okay, phew. Rehearsal went late.
Raziel steps close to the castle wall, wresting his scimitar free of its sheath and slashing at the monster with a backhand cut.
Raziel moves to M3 and into flanking with Sorin. He makes an attack against Ettercap 2.
Attack (Scimitar) vs. AC - 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
If it hits, it deals 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6 points of slashing damage.
Raziel opens a wound on the monster's left shoulder. Again, it shrieks in pain.
Meanwhile Setomi slips free of the webbing.
Ettercap 2
Sorin
Almar
Raziel
Setomi
Setomi's Escape Artist roll is a standard action, but she still have a move action left.
DM Hamied |
Full Defense is a standard action, I'm afraid. Based on your description, I'll assume you don't take a move action in Round 1.
Round 2
The monster twists away from the attackers at its flank, and makes for the castle wall a few feet away.
Ettercap 2 is using a full-round action to Withdraw. It moves to K3 first, and thus denies Attacks of Opportunity to Almar, Raziel, and Sorin, but will provoke an attack from Setomi as it attempts to scale the wall (it has a listed climb speed, so it can climb as part of a Withdraw).
Let's wait for the Attack of Opportunity from Setomi, as that may change the situation.
DM Hamied |
No worries, Almar
The monster's claws close on the jagged stone wall, and it hoists itself up. Ascending vertically as easily as any of you might walk or run, its muscular body becomes a dark shape as it passes into the mist above, and a moment later, disappears over the edge.
Is anybody going to attempt to pursue the monster?
Sorin Nicusor |
Sorin will move to where the creature is scaling the wall and strike at it with his glaive.
Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
Damage: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
Of course I roll max damage on what is certainly a miss.
Unless someone else does something, Sorin will watch in frustration as the creature makes its escape.
I'm going to be in Seattle the next four days. I should still be able to post except for Saturday. I'm fairly certain I won't have any access that day.
DM Hamied |
Sorin, the creature has a climb speed of 30, so by the time you can act, it is out of reach and out of sight. Unfortunately, you are not able to make your attack.
Setomi, you are sure you could climb the wall, but the mists conceal its true height, so you are not certain how far you would need to go. You also witnessed the creature climbing very quickly, much faster than you can. You could follow it, but you're not sure you could catch up with it.
DM Hamied |
This is one of those moments that makes me squirm as a GM. Any situation where a monster is able to escape in the span of a single round feels a little wrong to me, but these ettercaps are skirmishers, and excellent climbers. In playing their tactics, I can't imagine the monster making any other decision.
