@ Greyston
Elleross inclines his head slightly at the alchemists words.
I'm sure we can Greyston. he says in reply
magic is too long winded, I can't argue with that. But I am close to a breakthrough, I know there is more to the arcane than the limited teachings in those dusty tombes I have poured over for so many years.
I think I ruffled greyston's feathers a bit there I'm not sure why though. I'm not used to speaking to people on the outside, I will have choose my words with more care
he thinks to himself as he ponders what it was he said to bring about the look that flashed across the young alchemists face, almost as if he had rebuked him in someway.

@ the temple
Stepping outside Elleross pulls on his poncho as the chill evening air sends a shudder through him.
Following the others he is grateful for the warmth inside the temple as they locate the mercenary.
the frostbite looks bad, the weather should not be cold enough this time of year to cause this. Is it possible you were hit by some kind of frost spell? he asks as he looks at his wounds maybe one of these fey cteatures you mention called forth this cold effect, it sounds like some kind of spell was employed against you

"the old man here is right. This weather is not natural. Do know why they hit you?"

Aye I was hit by bloody spells! the mercenary replies indignantly. I was the winter-touched, I told you. Fey creatures who have sworn themselves to the White Witches of Irrisen, those who stole our lands from us during the Winter War. Tiny sprites no taller than the length of a man's forearm. But don't be fooled by their small stature. Legends say they have taken a sliver of ice into their hearts, and their touch
bears the harsh bite of winter.

He tries to sit up in the bed but the pain proves too much so with a curse he slumps down once again.

I don't know why they hit us but they took the Lady into the forest, back through the ice and snow. I followed as far as I could, but the winter-touched were too many and too hard to fend off in the snow alone. I barely escaped, and rode to seek help here.

He listens intently as Yuln tells his tale, the mention of the cold North lands bringing memories long buried to the fore. Memories of his childhood. The beatings, the constant toil, his mother's tragic death and his father's life ending under Corum's balled fists.

He snakes himself out of his fugue and concentrates on the words of the mercenary. Irrisen, a place he remembers mentioned in whispers in his village.

Nasrin sees the man she had stood ready with and feels a pang of guilt. She resolves herself knowing he I not of her pack. As the conversation turns to fey and witches she growls, "Witches bad. Fight or flee. And soon."

Yuln looks up through a half-closed eye, a trickle of blood runs from his frost-bitten nose. The priest, Natharen, rushes forward but the mercenary waves him away and says:

The girl... he pauses as if unsure as he looks over the tangled mess that is Nasrin. ...has the right of it. But if one of the White Witches took that Lady, no good shall come of it. The winter-touched do nothing without the leave of those who placed the ice in their hearts. If they're here, it's because a White Witch sent them. And much worse will follow.

At the mention of the witches Elleross suddenly feels a chill run through him fear mixed with a cold cold anger . In his minds eye he sees that grinning face again, pale skin framed with night black hair and those eyes.

Corum leans in past Nasrin. "Just one more thing. Where did thid happen? Can you gove us directions?"

About six miles south west, in the Border Wood.

I only wish I could come with you.

He grits his teeth and reaches for something beneath the bed.

If I can't be there this is the next best thing. he removes a sheathed sword from beneath the bed with a grunt. It is of simple but functional design, though with an unusually broad blade - a feature of northern weaponsmithing. With some effort, he tosses it to the big half elf.

I don't know how many of you can use it but it's cold iron. That and fire burns tge winter-touched in equal measure - they fear it. When you catch up with those fairy bastards, you push it deep. So I can feel it. he adds with relish. Look after it, I'm going to need it back.

The mercenary laughs as Corum mentions furs.

Dress warm bror. Dress for our winters.

Hallit:
'Bror' is a dual use word in Hallit that means both brother and warrior

The councilwoman frowns.

Vivialla may carry something. There was a harsh winter a few years back, nothing how he is describing though, can it really be snowing in the Border Wood? she says, her tone incredulous. I've never known that in fifty years. The gear Vivialla has will afford some protection at least, I'm sure.

"Good." Turning back to the mercenary, Corum indicates the sword and says "My thanks bror. I will bring honour to this blade."

With that he returns to the inn, taking his gear to his room he spends some time hefting the blade, checking the balance and weight. Finally satisfied he lays on his cot and drifts off to sleep. He sleeps fitfully, keen to be on his way come morning. He dreams of his village and his childhood, the ice cold wastes far to the north at the crown of the world. He dreams of the sweeping tundra and massive ice covered edifices of the massive mountains, their peaks lost in the clouds. The land sparse and unforgiving, where only the foolhardy or brave venture, where the ice and snow will kill you just as quickly as the massive polar bears that hunt during summer, stocking up their fat reserves in readiness for the long winter.

He wakes in the cold light of pre-dawn feeling slightly unsettled. He does not know if his dreams are some form of homesickness stirred by tales of the frozen forest or if they are some inkling of things to come.

He gathers his gear, checking his weapons and armour, then ventures down to the common room where the innkeeper is banking the embers from the previous night's fire. He moves to help him, quickly getting a mroaringire going while the innkeeper brings him a simple breakfast of bread, honey and a leg of mutton that was cooked the previous evening.

Nasrin enters and Corum nods to the chair next to him. The taciturn druid sits and Corum speaks. He is used to Nasrin's company and understands her as she understands him. He does not need to hear her words to get what she is saying. A nod or a look conveying more than words.

"Help yourself! The bread is good. The mutton is tough." he shrugs. It is food. As they eat he asks. "So we are to hit the road again. Good! What do you make of these others? They look soft, I am not sure they will keep up out there. The wilderness can be hard and you need to be hard to survive."
He nods at a raising of Nasrin's eyebrows and a grunt. "Yes they may have skills. Magic users and who knows what that masked one is." He makes a sign of the protective claw over his heart. "I don't like magic. Makes me nervous. But if we are to fight witches then I suppose we need something to counter their hexes. Bloody magic!" He spits. He notices a slight smile play across Nasrin's lips.
"I take it that means Thorn is coming. Good! I bet you can't wait to see him."

The others begin arriving a the warrior waves them over to their table.

He tries not to show it but the warriors blunt worlds rankle. Not because they are spiteful or vindictive but because they are true and though it annoys him to have it pointed out the mans honesty is refreshingly blunt. he's right. I wouldn't stand a chance in a frozen woodland in the dead of night, not yet anyway he thinks bitterly already finding his age since his release weighing on him, inside he had not worried about it as much. Learning to avoid confrontations with the other prisoners he had become quite adept at keeping out of trouble.

But then prisoners were easy to bribe.

very well we will set out tomorrow. I guess we will all meet at the inn. Until then Elleross says and makes his way back to the inn to secure a room for the night.

@ the inn
That night despite his weariness Elleross found it hard to shut down. The bed was much too soft compared to what he was used to although it was just a plain horse hair stuffed mattress he could not settle. Eventually he threw his blankets down and stretched out on the hard floorboards.

Rising early he made his way downstairs, his meagre possessions packed and ready to
leave.
good morning Corum, Nasrin. he says and joins them at the table ordering some porridge and a side of bacon. He eats hungrily and calls for hot tea to finish.

Nasrin speaks in a quiet voice to Corum, "Southerners. Soft, but maybe dangerous. The knife-ears seem to know what they're about." She drops her voice lower, for Corum only, "And I never trust a mask." Her frown reflects the worry in her eyes.

Nasrin keeps to herself for the rest of the night. Her thoughts run to the past, watching from the woods. Something about this deliberate patience feels the same, but then, she wasn't sharpening a sword that cold night. She is grateful for Thorns presence, though his play is at odds with the mood. Still, she uses a rawhide rope to play tug of war with the mostly grown wolf.

In the morning Nasrin will prep Endure Elements and not need winter garb ;)

what about you two? Is it just the promise of a reward that calls you to help the caravan that spurned your employment he asks or maybe it is the pride of youth, you want to prove they were wrong to let you go perhaps? he asks shifting the conversation away from himself.

It is our way.." He ponders what the old man says. "There may be something in wjat you say about pride. I do not feel any loss at the caravan being sacked. That was the price they paid for not paying for protection. In the end that skinflint gnome paid a higher price I reckon. This is a challenge in a way and I never back down from a challenge. there is nothing wrong with a little pride Corum, but you are correct in what you say. I take no offence, far from it. You are wise to distrust magic users, the powers they wield are deadly and can be used for the greatest evil. I do not trust any of them either . Greyston spends the night reading over his notes, sleep never came easy after all he had been through the cold sweats and shakes would keep him up late. He would take a sedative but it would take a while to work through his body. The knots in my stomach, could this all be a bad idea or just my irrational fears taking over. Waking up late and with a chill he slowly gets out of bed. It's gotten colder, i don't like this cold at all. He takes the time to dress, while his clothes have seen better days he takes the time to properly tie his hair back and shave. Then he studies his notes, brewing potions in his makeshift lab. These will save me today.

Then finally ready to face the world and with a hunger he heads down stairs to spot the others. "Good morning, Sorry for my lateness but it seems we're still missing one so thats good for me. I will need to pick up some cold weather clothing before we head out, i've never seen the affects cold cold have on my potions so that could be... something. But first breakfast and tea." He smiles at Greyston. "I'm afraid yoy may not look so elegant in furs but they will keep youalive. After I've filled my belly I'm off to stock up. I suggest you all do too. We can meet here in an hour then set off."

He then rembers something. "Oh, and bring rations. If the forest is really frozen game may be sparse and we don't know how long we'll be out there."

In the morning Nasrin offers a small and maybe feigned smile to all of her new compatriots. "The sun moves, we should hurry." She answers Elleross' question simply, "Furs. Warm boots."

She trails alonb behind Corum walking a'pace with her wolf. She waits patiently outside of the general store and then the smithy, or forge, or whatever is belching smoke and twisting metal.

The party gathers at the inn the next morning as the first rays of sunshine are pouring over the horizon. For some, such as the pair of mercenaries, this proves very easy. For others, not so.

Four of the burgeoning group meet for a simple, though voluminous breakfast.

The masked elf from the previous evening's presence is notable by it's absence. Throughout the meeting with Yuln he remains stoic and silent, at first a trait you believed to be in keeping with his secretive personality, but now appears to be indicative of his distaste for the work.

In truth, you cannot blame him. Even for Corum who has seen the terrible injuries the freezing cold can inflict, the sight of Yuln's ruined foot was enough to make him think the job is not worth the trouble.

After buying the gear they think they need, the party sets off.

The walk to the Border Wood is easy as several farm tracks run like veins through this region of land and are well traveled by both foot and cart. The early morning passes swiftly during the trek and though the sun begins to steadily climb it does not bring with it the warmth you may expect as the air hangs thick with a chill that only settles deeper as you get closer to the wood.

By the time you reach the tree line, a rime of frost covers the surrounding grass and you take the opportunity to add layers of clothing as you see the white-encrusted boughs of trees ahead.

You continue through the treeline, following Nasrin's steps and the padding sounds of Thorn up ahead. Before long you see your breath clouding before you, doubly so Elleros who huffs and gasps through the dense brush until the party rejoins the road and stops. Suddenly.

The sight before you is wondrous and disturbing in no small way.

A thick bank of snow blankets the scene, every tree and bush and blade of grass is covered and a downfall of snow falls gently but persistently.

All ten feet in front of you and no more.

You look to the left and right and can start to make out the curving of a hemisphere where the snowline starts and beyond is landscape unrecognizable this far south.

It is as if you were looking through the glass of a snowglobe.

Unperturbed, Thorn sniffs at a bush for a moment and then looks back as if to see why you have stopped.

Weapons sorted he now needed food and warm clothing and so the general store beckoned.
Purchasing a weeks rations and a stout set of cold weather clothes he dips into his dwindling money pouch and comes up a gold piece short.
apologies, but I am a little bit short, is there any way I can settle up when I return? he asks and the man tries not to laugh as he declines the offer.
Sighing Elleross reaches into his pack and pulls out a small tortoise shell box, it seemed to glow with its own warm light , so smooth and well handled it was polished to a beautiful shine.
I have little else of value, this is dear to me and worth ten times the ammount I am short. It is yours to sell if I do not return to pay my bill within ten days Elleross says to the man as he reluctantly hands over his tobacco box.
The man agrees , the deal very much in his favour as the box alone was worth more than the goods he had sold Elleross and the outstanding bill was only a single gold piece.
Elleross grunts as he lifts the heavy clothing and makes his way out of the store.

I was short of funds for the crossbow, rations and cold weather clothing. The tobacco box I purchased with my starting gold and is worth 25 gold new.

@ the general store.

Corum hears the exchange between Ellross and the proprietor. He frowns then when he takes his goods to the counter to pay he says in a no nonsense tone. "And that box the old man gave you. I'll give you two gold for it or nothing and I take it anyway. Your choice."

@ the wood.

Corum stops, stunned. He has never seen anything like this. This is wrong. It is not natural. He makes the sign of the protective horn then moves to stand by the old man. He nudges him then when the elf looks down, Corum passes the ornate tobacco box to him.

We may die today. A man should not die without the things that are dear to him." Corum walks off before the stunned elf can say anything. He draws his sword and strides confidently forward into the snow.

Greyston goes about his business not really sticking with the others but hoping to speak to Tessaraea before he leaves. Stepping into the shop, from out of the cold Greyston rubs his hands together and then pulls out a list of ingredients and starts to browse before going to the counter with his things. "Good morning Tessaraea." He smiles at her, becoming a little infatuated with her since he time away from home her being an elf and someone he thought smarter than himself. He relished every conversation they had.

"Just these today, i also wanted to say i maybe gone for a few days. There's talk to bandits and witches and a kidnapped lady in the woods. So i've put together a group togo find out what's happening as something sinister is bringing this cold." He put this money down on the counter scooping his ingredients into his satchel. "I just thought i'd let you know." He looks to her now.

"This is.. this is interesting. Fey magics at work, I guess we should be on guard from here on out, let's move in slowly." He says as he ties his coat tighter and making sure his gloves are fitted and ready to retrieve his bombs.

Anything i can make of this?

Greyston:

@the shop
Good morning Mr Fenris. Tessaraea replies. If this cold is really as sinister as you say I hope you're careful. Folk are worried about their livelihoods and after what happened to that man who came out of the Border Wood, all sorts of rumours are flying about.

No good can come of it. Luckily there are brave men like you out there willing to help.

@Greyston re: knowledge nature - you have never seen nor read about anything like this.

Nasrin motions for Thorn to sit. She then turns to Elleross and Greyston. "Let me check your gear." She takes a moment with each of the elves to ensure their winter gear is worn properly, reminding them to keep their heads covered and their feet dry. "Tell me or Corum if yer hands freeze. Don't wait." Taking care of her pups, she turn back to Thorn. She pulls him close by the scruff of his neck and whispers to him. Thorn takes off into the frozen wood, silent except for subtle crunches as he breaks the surface of the snow. Once he is deep enough, even those stop as the cold is unrelenting.

Nasrin stands, facing the woods, she mutters a prayer to spirits of air and fire, "Let this cold touch me not, your servant seeks to find this unnatural source and end it."

The walk was harder than he thought, his pack and the heavy winter clothing slowing him down terribly and he soon lagged behind the others.
Breathing heavily he trudged on behind them, his leg was not yet aching and so he counted that a blessing and leaning on his staff he kept following.
The others stopped up ahead and he catches up and stares in dis belief at the sight before him.
this is incredible , how can this area be affected in this way? Greyston have you ever seen anything like this? I know fey are capable of many things but this is something else he says as he looks around.
Corum knudges him and his train of thought is shattered as the intimidating half elf hands him his tobacco box, even though it is chill the tortoise she'll feels warm and a dozen questions leap to mind but the mans direct speech and unexpected generosity have left the elf stunned and he just looks on in surprise as he tucks the box away in his pack.
now that was quite unexpected, I think I may have judged this book by its cover and not realised what lay inside he thinks with pleasant surprise.

As Nasrin approaches him he is only dimly aware of her tightening his heavy jacket, pulling the rawhide cords around waste and hem tight to keep the warmth close to his body.
thank you Nasrin he mumbles lost in thought.

Elleros:

You have never heard about anything like this in nature. You are well aware that powerful wizards, witches and druids can control and manipulate the weather but never for this length of time, with such precision or in a climate so unsuited to cold weather

As they cross over into the frozen land Elleross draws in his breath sharply as the chill air hits him.

this phenomena is obviously not natural, there is something powerful at work here but I am at a loss as to suggest how this has been done. There are spells that I have read about that will control the weather but not like this. he says the duration and control needed to accomplish something like this is beyond mere arcane spell casting he says as he draws his coat even tighter and pulls his fur cap down over his long pointed ears.

Greyston looks on as Nas rin check over his gear, her care almost reminds him of his mother tell Nasrin pulls a cord and almost strangled him . This makes me feel like a child again, yet my mother wasn't this rough . But i dont want to lose a leg or an arm here. He nods at her. "Thank you." Then turns back to the snow.

"I've never seen anything like this before." He steps closer examining the clear line of snow. "I've heard of ways to control the weather but this." He stares off into the snow. "I suppose there's only one way to find out, lets keep heading in?"

Passing through the curtain of snow is like ducking through an icy waterfall. The drop in temperature is shocking and immediate, especially for those unaccustomed to this weather

You press on but as the snow steadily falls you can feel the cold settle in like an unwelcome guest, even through the cold weather gear.Rd

Your progress is badly hampered by the snow. Around six inches has fallen on the exposed ground and your first hour feels like half a day.

Can everyone make a Fortitude save of 15 vs cold environment please. The cold weather gear gives you a +5 bonus. Failure means you take 1d6 non lethal damage and are fatigued

After a while the road opens up to a wider area and is littered with debris and the corpses of slain humans and horses. A carriage stands in the roadway, its team of horses missing or cut free, while another overturned carriage lies sprawled and broken next to the tree line. To the south, more bodies have fallen around what appears to be a statue of ice. A snowy trail leads deeper into the forest.

Environmental conditions:

The temperature in the Border Wood is well below sub zero. The snow is thick and persistent and the environment has the following effects:

- Without snow shoes all movement is halved
- The temperature will mean you need to make a Dc 15 fortitude save vs cold environments every hour. The cold weather gives you a +5 bonus but the difficulty increase by 1 every hour until you seek refuge (most likely with a fire). Failure means you take 1d6 non lethal damage and are fatigued, you also then risk exposure to frostbite
-THE falling snow is not a blizzard but is still very dense. Visibility is halved and perception and ranged attacks suffer a -4 penalty

Endure Elements makes me safe, yeah?

Nasrin gives a short whistle to Thorn, bringing him back to her side. She looks at Corum and says, "Guard the farside. I'll search the wagons. You two help as you want." She approaches the carraiges and begins a cautious search, looking for anything unusual, other than the weather itself. How long has it been snowing here? Trail's gone cold, I know it.

The snowy landscape is a nightmare for Ellross, slogging through the deep snow is harder than he ever thought it would be and he lags further and further behind the group.
Breathing heavily he can feel the sweat beginning to freeze on his body as he struggles onward and he knows if that happens he will be in big trouble.
By the time he reaches the wagons the others have already begun to search them and sitting heavily on one he rubs his hand together briskly, forcing the numbing cold from his fingers.
His leg aches like the devil, the cold seeping into his bones and his knee feels like it is filled with broken glass.
have you found anything Nasrin? he asks as he takes the weight of his leg and catches his breath, as he sits and rests he begins to feel even colder and his teeth begin to chatter. Watching Thorne bound away in response to Nasrins instructions he smiles ruefully.
I am beginning to envy your wolf , I wish I was as comfortable as he seems
After a few minutes he has to get up and move around or freeze like the rest of this landscape.
Struggling to his feet he begins to look around.
