Kyle Gray |
Beppo, look through the cleric spells and let me know what you want.
I looked and came up with the following:
Level 1: Bless (would 'of the watch' work?), obscuring mists (domain), comprehend languages (domain), shield of faith, swallow your fear, sanctuary
Level 2: Aid (domain), Windwall (domain), Weapon of Awe, CLW (reach), Heroic Fortune
Level 3: Protection from Energy (domain), Gaseous Form (domain), CMW (reach), Wrathful Mantle
I can't change the domain spells, but the others I can.
Tessai |
@GM-JC: Your system seems quite streamlined, which is good for PbP. I definitely think we should give it a try.
Tessais' spell list is much more limited.
Level 1:
- Protection from Evil
- True Strike
- Shield of Faith
- Divine Favor
Level 2:
- Invisibility
- Blistering Invective - not sure if this one is allowed from outside in the match
Beppo van Drotske |
@GM-JCS: We saw Thrax's performance, so I would imagine we saw what kind of monsters he summoned, no? I recognize that he may approach each fight differently, but it might be good to have that reference.
@Tessai and Kyle:
All the spells on your lists could have some value. Beppo should be relatively stout when up against a lot of critters, so while basics like Cure spells and Shield of Faith are helpful, what might be the biggest boost would be spells that help control flyers (wind wall?), overcome resistances (bless weapon), combat reach (enlarge/reduce person), or control crowds (pit and wall spells).
Anything that gets solved by hitting it hard with sharp metal, I own that. Anything that has massive resistance to my weapons, stays out of reach, knocks me down, or disables me is going to be trouble.
Speaking of which, if Aemon or someone has gravity bow, that could be sweet in the right situation.
To give you a visual of what I'm thinking of, if Thrax summons a flying devil that shoots hasted lava darts, I'd like to be able to pull out my crossbow, protected from evil and/or energy, and shoot blessed large- or huge-sized bolts past his DR 10/good.
Tessai |
No can do on any of the spells you referred Beppo. Inquisitor has a limit in spells known :/
I do have oils of Bless Weapon though.
To be honest, most of what you referred are wizard spells. I tried to push the "wizard replacement" debate, but it died on us.
Bottom line, either Kyle can provide for that, or we buy pots. In fact I have a couple of alchemical suggestions to post when I am not on my phone, but for example, a tanglefoot bag is inexpensive and can go a loooong way against flyers.
More on this as soon as I can.
Tessai |
A couple of suggestions:
- Tanglefoot Bag
- Shard Gel
- Caltrops
- Potion of Sanctuary (can provide for a moments' respite)
- Potion of Vanish (invaluable) ;)
- Potion of See Invisible (probably the single most important one): it is my opinion that this cannot be made into a potion, but I have seen people lugging it around :/
Regarding spells, the good news is that I do not need to memorize them, I just chose from what may be needed to cast them.
Kyle Gray |
I don't have enlarge potion, but I recall someone on the team that usually uses them. Perhaps Brandon can provide a few potions of them.
Kyle wants to switch Wrathful Mantle for Sky Swim and swallow your fear for protection from evil.
spell list updated
Level 1: Blessing of the Watch, obscuring mists (domain), comprehend languages (domain), shield of faith, protection from evil, sanctuary
Level 2: Aid (domain), Windwall (domain), Weapon of Awe, CLW (reach), Heroic Fortune
Level 3: Protection from Energy (domain), Gaseous Form (domain), CMW (reach), Sky Swim
potions to purchase: shield, mirror image, enlarge person, and haste
I thought about see invisibility, but would think that greater invisibility wouldn't do well with the crowd.
Beppo van Drotske |
Let's purchase (I will do it if I have enough GP):
- 3 oils of bless weapon
- couple of tanglefoot bags
- 1 set of caltrops
- potion of sanctuary
- potion of vanish
- potion of see invisible
Any objections or suggested additions? I'm sure these will come in handy in other encounters if they are not used here.
I suppose I should carry at least some of those potions on my person so that I don't have to run back to the cage to use them, right?
Aemon Brooks |
I thought of Gravity bow also but it's personal, there's very few first level that will be of any help, i could learn Resist Energy but i've no idea if what he summons does any energy damage at this level.
Beppo van Drotske |
Bummer about gravity bow...
As for resist energy, you never know - the bad guys' resistances are probably the greater worry at this point, but anything that might be useful might end up being REALLY useful.
Beppo van Drotske |
Just sent an email to JCS with the information below. In the immortal words of that boxing referee MTV used for Celebrity DeathMatch, LET'S GIT IT AWN!!

Beppo van Drotske |
P.S. Sorry for holding us up. Have been trying to rustle a ~50-page brief lately, and that is a rather time-consuming task.
P.P.S. Also, belated Happy Father's Day to all the other dads in the group (I seem to recall at least one or two) - yesterday was my first, and it was pretty awesome.

Ok...I'm ready to get things going again. Sort of.
First, I've put a party wealth worksheet as a PDF in the shared folder. Before we start our new lewt system, we talked about equalizing everyone's wealth. You can review what HL has there as the party's current value and what the math says is needed to bring everyone in line. Now, I know in looking at Beppo that part of his value is because he has a number of weapons...and I'm not sure he's keeping them all. So, if he's selling and giving gold to party that will change things.
Once we've decided where each of your wealth levels are at, we will not do this exercise again. Using our new "Split it and move on (and maybe buy it later) rules, everyone will be getting a fair share of the value of items/gold found, and will have equal access to magic items found (that will be available equally to everyone at a discounted price except for artifacts).
At that point moving forward, variation will happen, though it shouldn't be anything massive. If you are continuously selling items, using consumables and/or relying on purchased magic weapons/armor, you're not going to have as much 'value' as someone who is relying more on items found (since they are 'bought' at a discount) who only upgrades and never sells items. I'll be discouraging (though not outright banning) lending money, items, etc...following these rules should keep everyone within a 15% range of each other, I'm hoping!
Brandon Harcroft |
Can I just clarify.. will those with lower wealth levels receive more of the split until it balances? (or is within the 15% variance)
Also, Vanish has a range of personal or touch so is fine in potion form.
At the risk of messing up the party pdfs my strength should be 19/21 - soz. Am I able to spend some power points as well?
Ideally I'd like;
3 extra skill points (2pp)
3 extra skill points (2pp)
3 extra skill points (2pp)
1 random attribute (6pp)
Tessai |
GM-JC, are any further posts required from us to continue the game? I was under the impression we stood only to proceed with the combat between Beppo and our opponent...
Or are we wanting to sort out the wealth before we go ahead? Because last time I tried to sell something it just vanished away into nothingness :D
And by the way, my character sheet in Dropbox still shows me as having the Ring of Fascination - that one is probably boosting up my wealth level when in fact it was sold for 0gp :/
GM-JCServant |

Herolabs disagrees with you...and I'm kinda inclined to agree if for no other reason that it is supported by Paizo...while it occasionally has mistakes, more often than not in doing deep research HL is right. I don't have the time to research it more. A quick look on d20 says, " 1 minute and targets one or more creatures or objects" so maybe "Touch" isn't eligible. Not sure...but if you can find the exact rule that says otherwise, I'd be willing to read and consider it.
I assume all wealth will be balanced out first then we'll go with the new system of gold split equally, so we don't have to do it all again.
Exactly. That's what I'm looking to do. Let's make a one time adjustment as agreed, use the new system moving forward which insures equal opportunity at equal wealth, and call it a day.

I am trying to straighten up and update y'alls sheets (Which I did yesterday), fix the wealth as y'all wish, and then implement the new system, which I need to finish making a spreadsheet template for.

You would need to email me as soon as you're aware of such an issue. I keep a copy of older versions of PDFs, but only for so long. So, if I'm made aware of an issue within a relative decent period of time, I can sometimes figure it out and get you credited.

3 extra skill points (2pp)

Email me so I can do this at home. I'll forget by the time I get there otehrwise. Gracias.

It works fine on my Hero Lab, thats the only reason I mentioned it. Strange how it doesn't on yours. I can send a portfolio file if you like?
Also, regarding pp ill email when I get hone, suffering the day from hell at the moment lol.

I think this is a great idea - as usual, around a table this kind of conversation can take up a few minutes and some math, but is usually sorted and decided upon really quickly. It is a good thing that we manage a way to sort this out in the best way possible for all, so that it is also streamlined in PbP.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
On a different topic (I hope it is ok to bring it here GM-JC), I find myself with some additional time in my hands, and I am again planning to take on the uncanny task of GMing a PbP. It is simply an idea for the time being, but since we have already played together here for some time, I would ask you guys input on this idea, namely what to look out for, to start out big or small, what kind of traps to stay away from, or if I am simply nuts for thinking about taking this on :D
Namely, and since I am having some serious issues in finding venues for my RL PFS role as VC in my area, I wanted to keep up my GMing nonetheless.
Thoughts?

It will let me, but when I'm choosing the spell, it's grayed out. Once I make it, it looks normal...but I can say that about any illegal potion. Generally, all of the valid potions are listed without having to do 'custom' potion. But if you do 'custom,' note which spells are black (valid) and which ones are grey (invalid) when you make it because after you make it, it doesn't flag it as illegal.

Glad you agree. I use a number of spreadsheets already to streamline combat in Pbp...as well as other tasks in my local/internet games that would normally take up time.

PFS works best (IMHO) in a local store setting, and done on a regular basis, even if its once/month. It can be hard to find a store that's open to it (as they are mostly catering to the highly lucrative Magic TG and Warhammer crowds), but if you find one that's into pen and paper, that's where you want to start. I currently drive 15 city miles, passing up 3 other game stores on the way, because our store is PFS friendly.
In my 9 months as VC here, I've run into a lot of drama...some of it I saw coming, and other stuff not so much. All I can tell you is, don't put up with drama. Run your games fair, by the rules, and if someone wants to start drama of any kind, warn them once....maybe twice, but don't hesitate to boot them if there's no significant improvement. Drama is like poison...it will spread and cause serious players to leave. Even if it's another GM or an important player (like one who brings 3 friends each week), don't leave it unresolved.
Let me know if you have any other questions, or if this opens more more.... I'm HARDLY an expert and I'm far from being the most successful VC...that's for sure. :) But I do enjoy it and have learned some hard lessons.
Brandon Harcroft |
Regarding HL - I agree that once created a custom potion shows as legal even if it wasn't to begin with. But Vanish shows as legal for me (albeit as a custom potion) whereas See Invisiblity is greyed out because it is personal only and not personal or touch.
Anyway, I don't want to get bogged down in HL shenanigans lol
Beppo van Drotske |
I think I might be able to use the shield hand for such things - or is that only for light shields?
[...checks PRD...]
A heavy shield is so heavy that you can't use your shield hand for anything else
S@$&! That IS only for light shields. Might have to forgo the bandolier and rely on my compadres for potion administration (!) Perhaps Aemon should wear the potions so that he has them handy...?
Shoulda taken a level or two of alchemist for that vestigial hand...or a level of arcane sorcerer for that monkey familiar...or synthesist summoner with a four-armed eidolon...
Note: With a free hand, what I would have done is take a 5' step, move action to draw the potion, and standard to drink it. If need be, I can drop something (I did bring my golf bag, after all), but I only have two really badass weapons.
GM-JCServant |
Why don't you just buy a potion helmet!
Potion Helmet
Works with existing helm or crown items.
This item fits on top of whatever head gear you are working. The potion helmet has holders on each side that can hold one potion vial each. Before placing the potions on it, the user attaches two long straws (included) and places the other end in his mouth, before placing the Potion Helmet on his head.
As a free action, the user may suck down both potions at the same time, receiving the benefit of both.
The user may not speak or cast spells until he drinks the potions, lest the straws fall out of his mouth and spill the potion contents.
GM-JCServant |
Ok...not a lot more input on this...so I will do this...
I'll equalize everyone's current wealth, putting some in 'debt' if necessary (after checking on an item or two that was brought to my attention). This really is the last chance to email any concerns. As soon as I can I will get my new improved spreadsheet made up and we'll start. So, please, look over your sheets and make sure they are accurate...this is the last chance to get anything fixed. Thanks.
Beppo van Drotske |
Bam! Fixed. Just like that.
GM-JCS: I have few tweaks to send to you (a skill rank that may have been mis-allocated, an odd counting of only half my dex bonus toward AC, and there are a few things that need selling, if that can be done at this point). Will send you an email ASAP.
