Logan had kept to himself much of the time just helping as he could with construction. Much darkness was swirling around in his mind, but with hard work he was able to not focus on it. Everyone including the pirates knew to give him room. Almost as if one of Luca's creatures had possessed him.

He seems to have a rough time really being productive until the third hour, then he is in the zone and understands what needs to be done through the previous failing.

With the logs all cut he assists in making sure that the construction is sturdy and secure, leaving the trap making to Vincent and Dante.

Finally he scouts out a bit from the hill fort and sees how he could get vegetation to help cover up some of the traps and merely finds a few large ferns that likely will be out of place covering the logs.

"Go ahead Tyrus. I think we got things covered here," Dante responds while carrying a log that looked like it should have crushed his thin frame. "If this thing works you won't have to worry about anyone from our end," he says smiling confidently. Everything was being put together as he had learned and after Tyrus opening speech, the pirates weren't as sour as they could have been. Hopefully leading by example was working. There was a tough learning curve for everyone but after the first hour or two things began to move efficiently. If they attacked, the goblins would be in for a big surprise.

With the help and leadership of Logan, Dante, and Luca - who proves surprisingly deft at helping guide the labor of the pirates - the fort flies up in the space of three hours. It is small, but fairly defensible - and is rigged to collapse down into the river. Dante and Luca carefully explain the mechanism to the pirates, warning them not to risk setting it off early. Three ropes swung over branches above provide quick (if risky) escape back to the main camp.

With the extra materials gathered, it will only take one hour to set up the log traps - but to make them as effective as possible they'll need to be concealed...

What Traps?:

The third and final phase! You technically have three hours until the attack and can use as many of them as you like to prepare this area - though they could also be spent on the main camp's defensive preparations.

Only one check can be made here - a Survival check to set up and help conceal the traps and the manipulated "kill lanes" on the hill. The better hidden they are the more goblins will fall for the ruse!

Roll up to three Survival checks. Any checks NOT made I will assume you went back to help out at the main camp, which will improve the situation there (this will be automatic, no roll needed).

Luca - being a rather sheltered girl, and not very good at independent survival - returned to the main camp to help encourage the pirates and make sure everything was prepared properly. All three hours were spent on this, and she actually seemed rather happier by the end - she seemed to have forgotten about her mistakes earlier in the day, and for now was just doing her best for as long as she could.

Human Male Magus (Bladebound) 4 | HP: 34/34 | AC:16 [21] | FF:13 | T:13 | CMB +3 | CMD 16 | Fort:+5 | Ref:+4 | Will:+4 | Initiative:+4, Perception:+2 Speed:30 | AP 4/4 | BBP 2/2 | 1st 4/4 | 2nd 1/2 | World Weariness 22 (-2 Charisma)

Dante was pleasantly surprised to see the fort and its defenses go up in such a small time frame. The pirates were surprisingly industrious. Even though he knew what was coming and his position among the men here, a good days work still felt good. With preparations complete he went back to the main camp to see if their defenses were up to snuff too.

Seeing as these defenses are meant to deter the enemy from attacking this spot it stands to reason that they should be obvious and imposing. Especially the lanes intended to funnel the enemy. That way the logs have more effect when released. The only thing that should be hidden are the pitfalls. So Dante will head back to the main camp to check their defenses as well. And even if they don't listen he will give any and all suggestions he can make in order to make sure they suffer minimal loses. The real danger will be the offensive.

Outsider

The fort itself should definitely be visible and imposing, but if the traps themselves are easily spotted then they can be easily avoided, which by my thinking serves to lessen the overall scariness of the area (though if you want to get far into the intrigue mindset, there could be OTHER traps that aren't hidden and the visible traps serve to keep people from looking quite as hard... but that's getting pretty complicated and we're talking about goblins here. :) However, as you are basically the ringleader of this little hillfort, I've noted your preference that the concealment efforts focus on the pitfalls.

Human Male Magus (Bladebound) 4 | HP: 34/34 | AC:16 [21] | FF:13 | T:13 | CMB +3 | CMD 16 | Fort:+5 | Ref:+4 | Will:+4 | Initiative:+4, Perception:+2 Speed:30 | AP 4/4 | BBP 2/2 | 1st 4/4 | 2nd 1/2 | World Weariness 22 (-2 Charisma)

The collapsing fort shouldn't be noticeable from the outside, which is the point but most of the others should be. The giant tree caltrops (like the metal ones used in WWII to stop tanks) are meant to hamper enemy movement and force them into line of fire for the logs that will be rolled down hill. That might be concealed but I doubt we could do all that in 3 hours. The pitfalls between the caltrops should be covered but they are mostly there to deter attempts to navigate through the caltrops (Just realized they are called hedgehogs). Should make it look threatening. If they want it they will have to commit and good size force and even if they take it they should loose a lot. We can think of something else to counter their new high ground if they manage all that. With their forces diminished it should make re-taking easier.

While the other go to rest or assist the main camp again, Logan stays behind and adds a few finishing touches to the hill fort. When the sun starts to fall behind the forest canopy, he too departs. A small detail of pirates remains behind to guard the fort in the interim.

GM Rolls:

The pirates have finished the main wall of the camp, creating a spike palisade with a simple "lifting" gate formed from more timbers. They did not have the time to complete the second layer of defenses, a job which will need to wait until the next day - provided the camp survives through the first night.

Just as the sun sets, more boats come down the river, carrying some of the men and women who had gone with the other attacking parties. Some of them are wounded, but have already been cared for - and Norren decides not to wake Tyrus yet. Kris leads the returning party, himself sporting a bandage across one arm.

"We stung them good and hard in the north," he says. "Closed up a pair of tunnels best we could. Caught them by surprise, I'd say. The eastern attack was different. They say they delved a ways into the tunnels and didn't find many goblins. Chambers abandoned, possibly for months. They collapsed what they good and came back out - I sent them back to the town to strengthen the guard there tonight."

Norren nods at the news. "Abandoned tunnels... not sure what that means. If the goblins had suffered some sort of disaster they wouldn't be troubling us until they'd regained their strength. But it doesn't matter. This is our course and we're staying it."

He then approaches the group of semi-maybe-former-prisoners:

"You there! I hear you did good work up on the hill. Dante," he says, using the young man's name for perhaps the first time. "You built it, you're likely the man most suited to defend it - but again, I'll not try and order you to do so. If you prefer to stay here instead, I'll send more of my men to hold it - some of the same ones who helped build it."

"And the rest of you choose your places as well. We need to have our guard settled before true dark falls."

I'm assuming you'll more or less stay together (save for Tyrus, who I expect to stay in the camp to tend to wounded), but make your decisions now!

Luca's summons could appear some way from her body, and quickly rush forward on their own to strike at the enemy - so she took a position about fifty feet back from the entrance, where she could both quickly flee to safety when it was time and send forth minions to pound at their enemies.

Dante scowls a bit when Norren uses his name. He didn't want to get too friendly with the man but currently they needed to work together so he let it slide. He also takes in the half finished defenses and smiles a bit. "What's the matter Norren, couldn't motivate the men to work faster?" Then on a more serious note. "Its unlikely that fort will get attacked anytime soon. Most likely they will test the defenses here first to see if they can just overrun the main base. And from what I can see your going to need all the help you can get to hold the line here if they commit a large force. Plus I can see pretty well in the dark." It was odd. Even though the spirit that protected him was human it made seeing in pitch black darkness easy. Maybe it was more than it seemed. Either way he decides to keep watch on the walls tonight.

Sassy, surly Dante. Love it.

Norren narrows his eyes at the slight, all trace of respect gone. "I sent most of my people with you, boy. You'd better hope that hill holds."

Norren, it seems, has better things to do than trade barbs with the young man, and walks away. The evening's preparations come to a close as the light fails, and some pirates take watch positionsat small raised platforms along the walls, allowing them to see over. The camp settles down for an uneasy rest...

Wow. Lucky pirates...

Late at night, when the second watch had risen to take over their duties, a shout goes up from the far western side of the wall. "Hey! We've got something moving out there!" A moment later a similar shout comes from across the river, up at the hill fort. Men and women rise quickly from their sleep, grabbing weapons and what bits of armor they own - which is precious little for a group of people accustomed to fighting aboard a ship.

The shrill war-yells of goblins and the more guttural roars of bugbears begin to ring out from the darkness beyond the palisade - all semblance of stealth abandoned now that they had been discovered prematurely. However, the encircling foe had not yet come out of the shadow to attack, and only dim shapes could be seen in the scant moonlight that filtered down through the leaves above.

I need more time for the maps, so we're NOT in combat yet - but it'll probably start soon!

Luca was close to the middle of the camp - a little to one side, of course, but within the light and behind the gates. As soon as she'd arrived, the girl allowed the Void within her to form a connection and summon a pair of stony minions to do her bidding. They took up positions on either side of the gates, and it didn't seem like the girl was going to stop summoning anytime soon - though as little as half a minute of the connection seemed to be dangerous for her, and she might or might not stop summoning around then. For now, the main goal was to create a shock force that could crash into the goblins and batter them down.

From the cacophony rising out of the dark forest, a single, louder roar sounds and shouts in the goblin language - even those who do not understand it know it to be a signal to attack.

The fighters at the walls heft their weapons as the goblins begin to rush forward.

Luca continued to channel her powers, and a third stony shape began to form in the air. However, the stony beasts weren't charging forward just yet. For now, Luca was trying to assemble as large a force as she could before sending them forth to crash against the enemy. As he had prepared, Dante builds up the energy needed for the spell in his hand, then slaps his chest hard. Logan slept reasonably well, concerning what was on his mind. Neither Dante nor Luca even responded to his inquiry to having a companion at their side. 'Perhaps we are not as close as I thought.' He had thought to himself at the time.

He slept near Tyrus and when the alarm was rung, he awoke to confusion. His body reacted normally to loud movements, collecting his weapon then starting to put on armor, he then realized where he was and quietly blurted, "Ah yes, prisoner, and now fighting for my freedom and life..."

With the offer from Tyrus he forgoes his armor and goes with the wizard/healer. With his few weapons strapped to him he comes to the wall enlarged, with javelin in one hand and his greatsword in the other.

He stays off the tower or wall, not sure if they will hold his new weight. He then smiles at the wizard and says, "Thanks this is a new experience but I like it."

There are more pirates than shown, obviously. I'm trying to keep the number of tokens on the board minimal for as long as possible. Pirates will get tokens as they became active in the fight.

The goblins rush out of the darkness and into the light of the torches and the pirates and other defenders unleash their missile weapons. Darts, arrows, bolts and javelins fly over the walls. The majority of them miss, but any blood drawn without an answer is good...

... but then a volley of arrows comes back the other way, courtesy of goblins still lurking at the edge of the forest.

Arrows:

Arrows v AC +5: 6d20 + 4 ⇒ (20, 9, 20, 17, 8, 15) + 4 = 93

Confirm Crit 2: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19
Crit 2 Damage: 2d3 ⇒ (2, 3) = 5

Though largely sheltered by their walls, some of the arrows fly with surprising accuracy - and one pierces a man directly through the eye. He falls dead from the platform, though he is replaced moments later by a fellow.

The goblins continue their headlong charge - a large group of them seems to be making for the gate, supported by bugbears. It seems they intend to batter straight through the rudimentary defenses. Instead of immediately tossing the javelin, Dante gets a better idea. That weak looking palisade gate didn't look like it was going to last long against this onslaught. So it seemed prudent to prevent anything that got close to it from getting any good leverage. He lays the javelin against the wall and forms a glob of grease in his hand. When the spell is ready he sends it flying to a point right in front of the door.

Tyrus almost breaks his stream of invocations upon Logan assuming he is within 30ft when the arrows fall - mostly he keeps going because he does not know what peril he is in.

How did this happen? If, a year ago, you had told me I would be integral to a battle against a horde of bugbears I would have thought you mad! Yet, here I am... ARROWS!

As soon as Logan is enlarged he runs to the fallen pirate. The wound looked mortal from a distance, but perhaps...

GMPC Logan

Suddenly gripped by the magic of Tyrus's spell, Logan stretches and grows, suddenly towering over the figures near him. It takes him a moment to adjust to the change, though now he can see over the walls...

Outsider

Spells complete, more of Luca's monsters appear, and Dante covers both the ground and the gate in a liberal coating of thick, gooey liquid. Through the shouts and the shrieks, Tyrus overcomes his fear to reach the injured man who had fallen from the wall - miraculously, even with an arrow in his face he is alive - but with the added injury from the fall only barely. TYRUS: Took a double move to get to him, you can attempt a Stabilization next round. He is at -6 HP. More arrows fly, and one manages to clip Dante along the scalp - but it is just a graze, hardly phasing the young warrior. Dante takes 2 points of damage.

The goblins that reach the space before the gate slip and fall in the liquid, unable to stop their headlong rush in time. One manages to keep its feet long enough to reach the gate, but falls ingloriously upon its ass once there, unable to make any attempts to harm the fortifications.

Elsewhere along the wall, goblins reach the mud-slathered surface and prepare to scale the log palisade to reach their enemy. The bugbears behind them roar their half-cheering, half-threatening encouragement.

??? vs DC 16: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (8) - 2 = 6

A heavy arrow lances out of the darkness from the north - it seems the pirates perched upon the defensive hill fort have remained unmolested thus far, and are adding their own arrows to the efforts to repel the goblins below. Their large composite bows, the finest the pirates have available, could surely cause grievous damage to the enemy - if they can land the shots at that range...

The arrow that grazed his head caused Dante to flinch unconsciously. But that wasn't going to stop him. He had the high ground, cover and magic armor. It wasn't likely to happen again. But, there were an awful lot of them. He smirked as he watched the goblins stumble around in the grease. That tactic would have to be filled away for later. Maybe he should add fire. Then a black shafted arrow nearly took out one of the bugbears. He didn't realize they were in range. Now they just needed a target. Grabbing the javelin, Dante focuses his magic and lights it up. He then searched the battleground for a likely target. Preferably a commander. "Tyrus," he says looking around for the surgeon. "S+*@," he says noticing him taking care of a fallen pirate. "Tyrus, when you stabilize him can you give me hand and light one of the javelins or shed some light on the battlefield? We have support coming from the hill and they could use some light," he yells, ducking another arrow.

Standard to light javelin. I have darkvision to 60 so I will be looking for a target within that range.

I'm a little worried about the eastern part of that map. XD

There were now four stony soldiers summoned from a twisted realm - the beginnings of a powerful shock force. However, that was when she pushed her will through, cutting out the connection between the Void that was sending the beasts through. Instead, she reached for the connection a different way - pointing up into the sky and casting a different kind of magic. I don't think it'll be quite as far away on the map as I actually want it to be - its power has a range of 60 feet and I don't have a way of excluding allies from things like that yet. XD In summary, I'll be trying to position it at a range where it can catch the enemy without hitting the defenders.

Meanwhile, the four Vilstrak she'd summoned maintained their defensive postures - Luca was apparently waiting for someone to note that it was time to open the gates and shock the beasts, and if that didn't happen, they could remain where they were.

Finally reaching the man he sees the poor doomed pirate struggling to breathe.
"Arrow has lodged in his orbital cavity." he mutters "Severe damage to his arm and leg where he landed..." he mutters. "Miracle he's not already dead."
Miracle? he wonders. I think I just got to him a few seconds before Death did.

Once again he feels that urge: this is beyond him. The die has been cast. Find someone he can help.

Outsider

Dante's magic flows into the weapon and it begins to glow with a steady white-gold light. He then scans the crowd of enemies for the best place to put the illumination to use.

Dante:

Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15

Towards the rear of the enemy, almost at the treeline, you can see what looks like a large, tattooed bugbear who seems to be giving orders. Near him are a number of goblins and other bugbears who also seem to have some sort of rank in whatever hierarchy drives these goblinoids. They are about 50 feet away.

Luca wrenches once more at the folds of reality, but now attempts more sophisticated tactics than the Void had in mind...

Making use of the fact the injured man is already out cold, Tyrus removes the arrow from the wound without much regard for gentleness. If it had struck the brain the fighter would be dead already. Bandages, clotting agents, and even a touch of his magic all go into rapidly treating the wounds... and it works. The flow of blood stops and Tyrus feels the presence of Death release its hold - for now.

Rolls:

Arrow Targets: 6d5 ⇒ (4, 4, 4, 3, 5, 5) = 25

Arrows (+4): 6d20 ⇒ (14, 19, 4, 14, 14, 2) = 67

With their archer brethren keeping the wall defenders' heads down, the goblins begin to climb, their stubby claws scrabbling to find purchase on the mud-slathered logs of the palisade. A small number of them find success quickly, managing to scrape their way to grab hold of the sharpened points at the top and ready to swing over to attack the people beyond.

Note: Goblins on the wall itself have scaled it, but are 10 to 12 feet up and thus out of normal melee reach from the ground.

A small creature appeared high in the air and shot outwards, away from the camp, before letting out a horrible sound.

Sagari: Baleful Whinny (Will DC 12 negates)

Once the sound had passed, Luca's minions finally moved forth in the way they'd planned for, passing through the earth and popping out behind the beasts as they attacked the gates. They'd also arranged themselves in such a way that any of the beasts who attempted to flee would be within the range of one of the stone monsters, and Luca nodded slightly as one of them bellowed a battle report in Aklo. "They've got the monsters against the walls, but there are a lot more of them to the east!" she called out, making sure the pirates knew what was going on over there.

In hindsight, I probably should've had them merge earlier... *Coughs* Well, they're out there now.

Scanning the darkness beyond the light of the torches, Dante finds his target. A group trying to conceal themselves near the forest. He doesn't have much confidence it will hit but he hurls the javelin at the tattooed bugbear before the goblins get over the wall.

Javelin-range: 1d20 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (5) + 3 - 2 = 6

Its a pathetic throw but it does the job, landing in the vicinity of the command group. He just hopes someone up on the hill understands what he is trying to do.

At Luca's word of warning Dante notices the goblins to the east clawing their way over an unprotected section. "Logan, this area is yours," he says leaping from the platform and headed for the eastern wall. The grease and Logan's large form should stop them getting through.

After javelin throw I hop or climb down the platform. Hop only if it is less than 10ft. If there are ladders then accelerated climb and move east. Ladder should be a DC 0 with a -5 for accelerated but I am pretty sure I can't fail. I also have reach now so I could feasible swing down. Either way I want to move as far as possible east without injury.

Going to count the spell as beginning now seeing as I forgot a round for Logan.

The newly-immense Logan grins in anticipation of using his advantage against the enemy, and moves to take up a position between the two main forces - ready to charge whichever breaks through first...

Dante: The platforms have sloped ladders and are very easy to access. They count as normal terrain for non-sprinting movement.

Pirate Attacks:

Pirate Attack v Wall Goblin: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Pirate Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

Pirate missiles(DC 15 kill): 5d20 ⇒ (13, 15, 14, 15, 13) = 70

The only pirate within reach of a goblin is so surprised by it's speed in climbing the defenses that he completely misses the chance to knock it back down off the wall.

Dante's throw, while not accurate, easily lands close enoough to illuminate the presumed bugbear leader. The one with the circular black border is the "special" bugbear. As he hops down from the platform, a pirate takes his place and resumes hurling javelins into the crowd of goblins below.

Then, Luca's unearthly creature shrieks.

Duration?: 1d4 ⇒ 2

All goblins in range are sickened for two rounds. Bugbears sickened for one round. Luca, I've labeled the Vilstrak's - please keep track of the sickened ones, or you can use "all for one round" as I've done with the bugbears to simplify it.

The keening sound strikes something unsettling within the mortal creatures who hear it. Some are able to shrug it off - and others aren't. The weak-willed goblins are affected strongly... is Logan, and some of the pirate. The creatures of the void distinguish few allies among mortals...

On the other side of the battle, Tyrus flings a glob of acid into a goblin's face, which shrieks in anger as it leaps at the pirate on the platform - the vanguard of the western attack.
