Tyrus slumps in relief - and there is a lot of Tyrus to slump.
"Oh? Oh..."
"Madam, that is unfortunate. Kris, I commend you on your efforts. Will water down a man made channel count for the purposes of a 'Natural Flow' though?"
"Lianna. This mad wizard who trapped you. Do you know how? or who he was?"

Outsider

At Dante's shout, all the workers dive headfirst out of the tunnel as it collapses. There is a good deal of coughing and disorientation as the dust clears out, but it becomes clear that nobody is badly injured. One man's leg is half-trapped under rubble, but once freed he is just fine.

"Good eye, kid," Norren says. "Splinters and ash... look at that."

The cave-in has collapsed the stone for a good thirty feet above. It seems likely that it reaches far back into the tunnel system. The mountainside that you can see is complete ruin, with pebbles and dust still cascading down in intermittent showers as the mass settles.

Norren nods. "I'd say that's a day's work. Let's get back to the camp." Without another word, he sets off down the beaten forest path that led you here.

When you return to the camp it is close to sundown, and Norren tells the group to get some rest. "Most of you are staying here. Some I'm bringing back with me to town. We're keeping this camp up until we've buried our enemy in their little mountains - but there's always plenty to do at home."

He nods to Dante and Luca. "Thanks for coming along today. It went more smoothly than I expected - but then again, I always prepare for the worst. I've asked enough of you, and you're welcome to return to town with me unless you want to stay and help the effort here. Your pal Logan decided to stick with the fighters. Seems to be settling in nicely here," Norren says with a little smile.

"Lianna tells us that it will," Kris says. The naiad spirit confirms with a nod.

"He never told me his name. He would speak with me only briefly, and only to enact experiments upon me. He was one of the stonefolk, I remember that." A common nickname for dwarves. "He captured me while I was coursing down in a storm, my being infused into the raindrops which eventually found their way into this cave. Some ritual of his prevented me from leaving again. He was such a strange creature... he had a mix of power and yet naivete. I do not know how he gained the knowledge to trap me, but it is obvious that making use of his prize proved more difficult.

Something dark glimmers in Lianna's eyes. "I resisted his spells and his rituals that sought to rip my power from me. I mocked him in every tongue I ever learned, and fought back in every way I knew. Then, one day, he simply disappeared. he never showed himself in this cave again, and very faintly I felt the marks of his presence disappear from the island, his spells dissipating. But that was... long ago. Perhaps hundreds of years. As my own lifeforce waned, I lost track."

Luca glanced towards Dante. She didn't think she'd be in much personal danger - not from any of the pirates who'd seen or heard about the assault on the fort - but nor was she at all comfortable being alone with these people. She'd definitely like to go back to town (where, among other things, she could hopefully get Tyrus' help identifying that plant), but she'd ultimately end up going wherever Dante did just so she could be near someone familiar. As for Logan... he hadn't seemed to be the pirate type, but she was glad that he seemed to have found his place. That was a luxury more valuable than most people knew.

"I am afraid I don't have any easy answers. It sounds as if the spells that trapped you here have frayed - or even unravelled completely? In such a case it may be that simply creating a channel would be sufficient. Interesting. Let me dwell on it."
"The tunnel being dug is large - it must be for men to dig it. But only a narrow channel would be necessary to pass water. I'd like to discuss this with Logan and Dante. It might be that a clever engineering solution could dramatically speed up digging time."
Tyrus looks apologetic
"Don't despair. I think there are still unexplored possibilities. It'll take more than a few moments thought though."

Unbidden the thought had already occurred to him that blood was in many ways almost indistinguishable from seawater. Probably best not to suggest that.

Dante catches Luca's look out of the corner of his eye. She was leaving it up to him. It made him somewhat happy to have people look up to him. Even if it was just one or two right now. But after the cave in, he figured it would be better to have someone nearby that knew a bit about combat engineering. That way they might be able to prevent more injuries. He gives Luca a sympathetic look before answering. "I best stay to prevent any more cave ins."

Outsider

Norren chuckles. "We're trying to cause cave-ins, but I take your meaning. It'll certainly be a damn sight safer to cause them if you're around with the know-how. I'll give Verrick word that you're to go along with the sappers he sends out."

Norren looks at Luca. "And you? I figure you'd want to come back to the town, what as you don't look much at home in a warcamp. Then again, those creatures of yours saved a lot of lives."

Outsider

Tyrus:

"Speeding up the digging couldn't hurt," Kris says. Then he shrugs. "But unless we can find a way to keep her Ladyship alive longer, I doubt it'll be fast enough. I've gained a feel for the ebb and flow of her powers, I'd reckon she has maybe two weeks left at the longest. Your alchemy did the most good of anything we've tried so far."

Tyrus - Dark Thoughts:

Blood. Yes, yes. A lot of power in blood - but blood power, bloodily taken, has the habit of perverting its intended use. Maybe if it was freely offered? Or purified somehow? After all, it was the alchemical power of the merchant girl's blood that bought the Naiad some time already.

So many possibilities. So little time.

Just a bit of dramatic flavor. You can continue to freeform RP Tyrus's researches for awhile, or if you prefer something faster I'll just give you some Knowledge checks on likely routes.

Luca almost visibly wilted under Norren's attention. "I'll... s-stay with Dante..." she said quietly. "I don't really like being out here-" she'd been born and raised a city girl, after all, "-b-but we'll all be safer if we stick together and see that the job's finished properly, r-right?" This was mostly self-interest - there were times when you had to go out of your comfort zone in order to do what needed to be done, and this seemed like one of those times. Besides, who knew? Perhaps she'd even develop a reputation among the goblins that would make them more hesitant to attack...

"We want engineered collapses not cave-ins. The first is assumed to be under control and the second an accident." As he moves away from Norren to oversee work, and prevent these idiots form killing themselves, Dante gets close enough to Luca so that only she can hear. "Sorry about that. I know you left the decision to me but you hoped we would head back." He then looks at their latest handiwork with the first cave-in. "No one seems to know what they're doing here so all they'll end up doing is killing themselves. I would rather they not die knowing I could do something to stop it. That and I would be more comfortable with a familiar face around." He then smiles and her guardian before heading back to work.

Norren nods at Luca's answer, and smiles at Dante's correction. "I'll let you worry about the words you put to it. My people will listen to you, and Verrick will know what you're about. For now, I need to return to the town. Best of luck to you all in the meantime."

Going to assume Luca will still go wherever Dante goes, and will be returning to town.

You learn that the ship will not return until tomorrow. As Norren is selecting the groups of who stays and who leaves, the camp lieutenant, Verrick, approaches Dante. "Heard you might have a bit of handy know-how with all this tunnel business. Don't suppose you'd share a bit o' that with us as is staying, eh? We've already had a few injuries, and we've still got a lot of digging to do."

"Of course. Do you have any writing supplies? The first thing you want to do is find the weakest point in the tunnel. The way to identify that is..." Dante walks off with Verrick to find a table and writing supplies. This way he can write notes and draw diagrams in case they are needed. If allowed, Dante will talk his ear off to make sure he knows everything he needs to keep people safe.

Meanwhile, looking rather happy to be back in town, Luca quietly busied herself with delivering food and medical supplies to those who needed them. They weren't out of this issue just yet, and though she would never have admitted it, she was simply putting her old lessons into practice. Give them both a stick - like frightening them with her summoning prowess - and a carrot - such as delivering the basic necessities they liked - and people were unlikely to want to do anything against you.

GM Mercy:

Moving about half done, tomorrow's going to be the last and hardest day.
Given then time constraints I'm happy to go with skill rolls for some initial clues.
My freeform so far had gotten about as far as:
* speed up construction
* heat seawater to send along a pipe into cave, where it will hopefully condense on the cieling
* see if buckets of seawater carried up by hand help
* set up water collectors that pipe water into the cave (in case it needs to be more natural)
* try distilling a pint of Tyrus' blood, which he offers of his own free will, but DOES NOT SAY WHAT IT IS. Remember, he's a Bloodmage.
* get the potions and so forth from the hidden dungeon, in the hopes one of them might help.

He's also thinking that this explains the strange structures on the island: rogue dwarf wizard. If that is true then quite possibly there is something there, or in his notes, that will help. That means - at this point - pillaging the hidden dungeon because the alchemical supplies there are probably close to the library.

How long after Tyrus are Dante and Luca hitting town?

Outsider

Luca and Dante arrive back in town about a day after Tyrus did, so you would have already finished the "discovery" and conversation with Kris and have probably spent some time mulling over the problem.

Norren, Dante, and Luca arrive back in town near to noon on the day following the sojourn into the tunnels. They bring with them the six former prisoners of the goblins.

"Camp is still up, and from now on we man it in shifts until the jobs done," Norren told his people, many of whom gathered to greet his return on the pier. Then he turns to Dante and Luca. "You fought for us, and I'm a man of my word - no more prisons or camps. The next time one of my ships sails for a mainland, you'll be on it. Until then you'll have food and lodging here, and can do as you please - within reason, of course."

We're into a bit more freeform again. If you're lost for what your options might be, ask away.

For additional promptings on possible solutions, throw me out a Know(Arcana), Know(Planes), Know(Religion), and Craft(Alchemy) checks! When she had the chance, Luca went to go find Tyrus - she still needed more information about the strange plant she'd found before, and hopefully, he'd be able to help her understand more of its properties. It was connected to the Void, after all, and that made it both interesting and worrying on several levels. Her Eidolon followed her literally everywhere, rarely more than ten feet away from her at any time.

Of course, getting his help implied he had free time - and if not, she'd be helping him as best she could.

Honor among thieves. Dante sighed as Norren left. He wanted to like the man. Really he did. He was fair, reasonable, protective. But he settled a score with a man by killing him and took a boatload of people prisoner for indentured servitude to tunnel or for ransom. All to create a more free society? The irony was palpable. It would be so much easier to just explain his plans for this island to those he wanted to recruit. There would be plenty willing to help. Dante shook his head. The man was an enigma. One he would have to figure out later. Right now he just wanted to rest and see a familiar face.

His sword seemed to vibrate on his hip. Or perhaps it hadn't. He had been getting this strange feeling from it recently. Felt the ghost of a vibration from time to time. It was like it was trying to speak to him. But it was just a sword right? They don't speak.

Dante asks around until someone tells him where Tyrus is and heads off to find him. Once found he finds an open seat nearby and slumps heavily into it. "So, how was your day?" The lazy way in which he sits tells Tyrus that the lad's was stressful and tiring.

Tyrus had thrown himself into his bloody work, almost to exhaustion. Patients had been tended. He had managed to start on alchemical preparations, but had abandoned the effort when he heard somewhat exaggerated claims that victory had been achieved.

When the ship docked he fully intended to see if Dante and Luca were aboard, but one of his patients had slipped and pulled the stitches holding the flap of skin over her skull. He had only just finished restitching the wound when they arrived - Dante first.

The bloated wizard cheered up at the sight of his young companion.

"Dante! Good to see you! I hear Victory is yours! I've been busy - I sincerely hope your victory means you've not bought me another load of casualties"

"I can sense Torble nearby, so I'm hopeful Luca is - ah! I think that's her there!"

Tyrus:

Your readings haven't concerned themselves much with extraplanar beings, and so you know little about how to keep them alive. It seems logical to you, however, that if the distilled essence of Yllaine's blood was able to reinvigorate the Naiad, then similar treatments on a grander scale should continue to help. Keeping the Naiad alive: Yllaine's blood may well hold further power to help.

You also know that you must be very, very careful with any treatment or ritual involving life force, as blood sacrifice unwillingly taken is a common gateway for ruinous forces to enter the world. Attempting to sacrifice Yllaine's life (unwillingly) to feed the Naiad would almost certainly work, to some extent. However, it would also likely have very... interesting side effects.

As for getting the Naiad out of the cave, you are similarly in the dark. You discuss some of your ideas with Kris.

"Lianna has told me what she requires to escape, and that is a clear, nearly-unbroken connection between this pool and the sea. Pouring more water into pool will help keep the stream going until its other side finds the sea, but there is no way to sift out her spirit from its anchorpoint in the pool. And now that she has lost her mortal lifeforce, mundane seawater is too little to help her keep a hold on existence. I thought to try a wooden sluice and aqueduct early on, but my researches tell me such an artificial path could not carry her. A tunnel dug through stone may still be manmade, but the stone over which she flows will be unworked and natural."

It is she who protects us from the storms of her brother Arrosh. She loves us and we love her. Do you have any idea how beneficial that could be for a struggling island settlement? And if she can bring the favor of her mistress the goddess? Should Arrond look upon us with kindness..."

There is a gleam in Kris' eye. "So you see, even beyond simple devotion, there are reasons to give the effort our all."

Dante catches the disappointment in Tyrus' tone but doesn't comment. Did the wizard wish to stay? What for? "From what I understand its not that strange. If they aren't fighting others they are fighting themselves. Better question is why return the prisoners? A stupid move with that kind of bargaining chip. I know at least bugbears are smarter than that," he says scratching his chin.

Tyrus strokes his chin
"Perhaps because they do not understand human emotions besides fear? I cannot imagine goblins care much for their fellows beyond a primitive pack mentality, and ownership."

He coughs
"If we can find somewhere more private, I have something to bring up with you."

somewhere more private:

"I have discovered the purpose of Norren's barbaric tunneling project. There is a handmaiden of the goddess Arrond trapped on this island. He is attempting to free her!"
Tyrus allows his friends time to process this information, then continues
"It sounds unbelievable, but I have seen her!"
"I have been brought in on the secret because the handmaiden is... well... dying. They're racing against time to save her. They need me to keep her alive. I argued for the two of you to be brought in as well."
"I know we've not seen eye to eye over the Captain. His methods are... questionable. But I was sure both of you would care about this. Frankly, I believe we might make the difference between failure and success - or at least be able to prevent a tradgedy."

What now? Handmaiden of a god? That was...unexpected. "There is not question he's a damn pirate," says Dante, crossing his arms. The comment was merely a distraction as he tried to come up with something more meaningful to say. He didn't think Tyrus was lying, no reason to. But this was outside of anything he could imagine. It seemed way too altruistic for a pirate. "Why?" he asks simply.

Luca quietly fiddled with the case holding the plant. Dante and Tyrus had gone off to talk somewhere, and she sighed a bit, but didn't feel quite as alone as she once might have. Given her furry follower, though, she didn't have much choice in that...

Intelligence (Trying to study the plant): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10

Hmm... maybe she could consult a botanist once they got back to the mainland...?

"Are you coming, Luca?"
sorry, bad writing... was intended to be both of you

It was remarkable how quickly the girl could move at times - one almost had to wonder if she'd learned to teleport.

...

Given the general oddity of her situation, that may not have been impossible... still, she seemed quite willing to follow Tyrus and Dante, and took a few moments to listen to what he had to say. She just nodded afterwards, able to form one important conclusion. "...Who is Arrond?" she asked blankly. Her education had been sporadic at best - she could talk about nobles, and knew a fair bit about magic, but nobody had ever explained much about deities to her. The only higher power she knew and understood kept taking control of her body and forcing her to do things regardless of what she wanted. "Um, I'll h-help if I can, of course..." she added nervously. Previous night's activities aside, healing wasn't her strong point, but she could at least try to carry supplies or something.

Outsider

Luca:

You are unable to discern anything more about the plant. It has a fat, spongy stalk at the bottom, grayish-purplish in color, with reddish-purple tendrils like roots extending from what you imagine to be the base.

"Arrond - the goddess of the sea. Worshipped by Sailors and Pirates." he explained to Luca
"I asked the same question, Dante. There's a component of worship, but Kris pointed out that the gratitude of a sea spirit, or possibly even the sea goddess, was extraordinarily valuable to a fledgling island nation."

Tyrus shrugs
"I have a preference for freeing her. There's moral reasons, in addition to pure rational self-interest. I haven't been able to check out her story about this dwarven wizard, but it rings true."

Dante is about to with something scathing about Norren but he holds his tongue. It didn't matter his motives or Kris's. If someone or...something needed help he would definately provide it. The secrecy and slavery seemed odd though. The ends didn't always justify the means but that was a difficult line to percieve. He sighs and responds. "Fine. I'll help." He would reserve his personal judgment on the matter. He would a poor person to say no out of spite. "How can we help?"

Luca listened attentively as Dante asked further questions. She wasn't sure how much use she'd be, but Tyrus had far more experience in life than she did, and she was more than willing to listen to him and do the best she could to follow his instructions.

Sorry all, board ate my post. Try 2.

Tyrus shakes his head, as if coming out of some sort of trace deep within his thoughts.
"Perhaps I should start from the beginning." he agrees

"Lianna is a naiad princess, the divine servant of the goddess Arrond."

"Some wizard - she doesn't know his name - captured her while she was coursing down in a storm, somehow infused into raindrops. The raindrops found their way into the cave, and a ritual of his prevented her from leaving."

"She doesn't know much about him. He was dwarven - though she says 'stonefolk', and had a mix of power and naivete. "

"She made a terrible captive, apparently. Fought him all the way, stopped him from gaining anything and then he vanished, she presumes dead. That was centuries ago."

Currently she can only move through naturally flowing water. The pool she exists in does not flow anywhere, so she's trapped. She's made hints that she had some sort of mortal body that could travel otherwise, but she has now lost it. And I quote: 'I died long ago, friend Kris. My mortal body withered away quickly in this stagnant puddle.' and 'The taste of divinity I have from my mistress lets my spirit outlive its husk, just as it allows me to create a new one - if I can gather the strength. But that divinity now fades as well. Soon it, and I, will fade completely.' I... Haven't pried too much into that at the moment.

"Norren and Kris found the Lady Lianna a couple years ago. She's been helping - or has agreed to help - them in the establishment of a free city here on the island, without trade guilds and taxmen."

"Their plan was to dig a tunel from the cliffside to the cavern. The water would then flow through the rubble and out to sea. They've tried engineering solutions, but they are not natural. It seems even if a straight channel is man made, the flow itself is natural, and so will work."

"Lady Lianna is dying. They've been racing time with this tunnel, but we are now approaching the point where she's going to perish before being saved. Especially with the goblin raids. Kris and Norren had me distill something that gave her some strength, but not enough."

Tyrus looks shifty, then continues
"They said they were testing my alchemical knowledge. Had me distill the essence out of Yllaine's blood. I didn't know what they wanted it for, but they were excited."

"They seem to think we could just keep doing it, but blood magic isn't that simple. There's a strong karmic resonance to blood magic. If we were taking it by coercion or force, something is going to go bad. And by bad, I mean things like dark outsider influence. Potentially something that makes Luca here seem positively benevolent."

"I've warned them, but they seem desperate. They're prepared to listen to other suggestions. I'm not sure what I can do though."

"If we can speed up the tunneling - even a trickle - I think we can get her out before it is too late. If we can convince Yllaine to help her of her own free will, we can help."

"Potentially other blood might be distilled. We might find clues in the dwarven wizard's laboratory. We might be able to somehow bring the sea, or essence of the sea, to her. We might be able to sustain her through necromancy."

"Needless to say, the preservation of semi-divine extraplanar life is not a research topic of mine, and I'm not the engineer you are, Dante - or have your connection with the extraplanar Luca. So I asked for permission to bring you in on this little conspiracy of mercy."

"Regardless of why they're wanting to do it, I think we are now in the situation where we can save at least one life, and possibly prevent the creation of a terrible monstrosity. If we simply kill Lianna, I'm sure Norren and Kris will be terrible in their vengeance. If we free her, we should be able to stop them using slave labour: or at least negotiate for that."

Luca listened attentively, then nodded as Tyrus finished talking. "...How much water do we need to move?" she asked. "Does it all have to be moved at once, or could the water be put into several containers, moved, and then brought back together?" More information was always good, and she had an inkling of an idea, but she wasn't entirely sure if it would work or not. It was, however, quite clear that she wanted to help as best she could.

That, and she really wanted to avoid any influence from outsiders. The Void was frightening enough as it was - its morality (if it had any) bore no resemblance to that of human society, and the best that could be said was that it acted in its own interests at all times, regardless of what that meant for others. If there was one upside, it was that it didn't seem to be actively malevolent - she didn't even want to imagine what an otherworldly force that wanted to hurt people would be like.

"It has to be a natural flow, I believe... though I agree the experiment seems worthwhile - if it makes any difference to give her seawater it would be worthwhile. I suspect this has something to do with divine Domains, and 'sea' versus 'irrigation'. I have some hope your 'friends' might therefore be a loophole."

Dante listened. He wasn't happy about some of it but he listened to the end. Ylainne, blood magic, necromancy, slavery. The quip about Luca was particularly infuriating but he might not have realized what he said or how he said it. It was for a good cause but nothing justified that. He thought for a moment, ideas wandering through his head like sun-blinded kobolds. "They probably tried that," he says about the buckets of water. "I think we need to talk to Kris and the Naiad before making a decision. But your ideas sound good to me. Luca can probably summon something that burrows to buy us some time and speed up tunneling. I can probably get the tunnel moving faster. And we can explore that fort some more. No doubt that was the dwarf's workplace. But I will have conditions for him and Norren."
