What you could do is look at characters, look at posters, try to build the party around both, and then once you settle on the party you could just adjust the timing. Let people swap out traits or modify their characters as appropriate.

For example, in my character’s backstory his “hatred” racial ability doesn’t make much sense if he’s from the Fangwood without having interacted with any goblins or kobolds, which is why I had the character get harassed while escaping the blight.

This could easily be switched around to “fought off a contingent of hobgoblins” around the time of Ramgate. I think if you outline a timeline (even if it is borrowed) then good players will try to work their characters into it so that it makes sense. That said, you’ve indicated that you’re happy to have Pathfinders as well, who may have no relationship with Nirmathas except after the game begins.

It’s a lot less confusing to ask people to change their background a bit once you’re only asking 5-6 people to do so, and they are already committed to play. And it gives you more time to make the decision about how much you want to change.

I always like to make change to backstory once a group is established I like finding previous relatioships and more connections to the area.

Background:

Kag was born in Glimmerhold to a family of murchants. As he grew, he realized more and more of his family and neighnors where mean, manipualitive, and greedy. At a young age Kag was able to get ahold of a ratty old copy of Hammer and Tongs: The Forging of Metal and Other Good Works.

Using what he learned in the book he started working with Iron and forge. While sweating and reading through the book, he decided to craft himself a Holy Symbol of Torag. At first he thought it just a challenge of crafting, but soon learned he meant more. Inspiration comes from many places.

He did his best to hide the symbol from his family. Even though Torag was a common god to the Dwarves, they still look down on the good nature of diety. So Kag started to read more and more. He soom came to realize he wanted to dedicate his life to Torag. Before he could be found out he left the city to roam the world, learning what he could. Protect people and bring law to the lawless.

He started roaming around wilds, helping people wherever he could. Eventually making his way to Phaendar. Using the town as a home base of sorts, he would venture out for months at a time to heal and help where he could. Always ending back in Phaendar.

Questions:

1. I am carrying Gorum's holy text. How much should it weigh?
2. Are we tracking gold weight?
3. I took a trait Covert Channeler. It is worded like it comes from the Wagon's of Light which is an organization in Geb, which is a bit far from where we are set. I really like the flavor of it. I also have never really played a game that uses the holy symbol that strongly, so having the option to store it and pull it out easy would be nice. As you said, you are LN so I figured I would ask about this one. I included a reason for it in my backstory as well.

My posting times are basically whenever I am awake, which is about: 7am-12am PST. Which converts to 2pm-7am GMT or 10pm-2pm in your timezone (GMT+8). I know this not the most optimal posting time, but I do have RSS notifications on posts so I am generally pretty good about posting often. If you look at my history I am GMing 2 games, and playing in another (though that is VERY VERY slow). Playing I should be able to post from my phone a bit easier, when I am GMing I like to use my computer, so my posting times as a player should be even easier.

Like a few people have said, I am very willing to change things around to fit with the group better after everyone is picked. I will also make a profile and fill out everything so its nice and easy to get to if I get picked.

Good luck to everyone

Hmm... I feel like my exotic character concepts are gonna be my downfall..

Although I don't regret it, most of my characters are worth the exotic appeal :P

Answer to questions:

1. A Pathfinder Chronicle weighs 1 lb. Lets put Gorum’s holy texts as that. How much can 7 poems weigh anyway…unless you decided to make the pages out of thin sheet metal. Wait, why are you carrying Gorum’s holy texts if you’re worshipping Torag? Torag’s holy texts I’d put it as a pathfinder Chronicle for weight + 1lb (since it’s bound in metal and has leather pages).
2. No. Honestly, maths eats the thoughts out of my head.
3. I think it’ll probably be a wasted trait, since in this game you can hang your holy symbol at your belt/on your neck, whatever, no one really cares who you worship. But you can take it if you like.

Also NeoEvaX – how are you getting +4 knowledge nature on 8 int, with knowledge nature not a class skill?

1. I think I just messed up when I was typing it in! Oops. My sheet says Torag for my holy symbol, but I typed the question wrong..

2. The +4 Knowledge Nature is because of the Champaign trait Frontier Healer (from Ironfang Players Guide). I can pick Heal or Knowledge Nature as a class skill. I also get a +1 on it from the trait. So 1 (rank) + 3 (class) -1 (int) +1 Trait = 4

3. I am switching that trait out for Defensive Strategist.

Ah OK makes sense. Couldn't find it on a cursory search on d20pfsrd and I didn't have space to put the player guide on my phone. Yeah I know, excuses, excuses.

Caster's submission here. Healer, condition remover, support full caster, and capable of casting any arcane spells starting at level 4.

Still refining backstory a bit and will reorganize the character sheet to be clearer but here we go. Your friendly neighborhood midwife with a bit of healing magic might be about to get in way over her head! :D

Grand Lodge

Echoing agreement that a character's background can change after final picks are made. Not usually big changes, but something to add to story/role play that takes into account at least one other character. Like for this game, my character's background is as an eccentric healer that lives on the edge of society. Any of the other characters can know him or of him. Azmythe could have healed them, or a woodsy character could supply Azmythe with medicinal supplies, or anyone could have befriended the odd elf that plays the flute (jazz flautist). The reverse is also, true.

I don't mind. I'll try to get somewhat of a balanced party since the party has to handle everything by themselves. I glimpsed ahead and realized only at mid book 4 do you actually get to spend large sums of gp. The book 3 settlement is kinda small.

As I said I was prepared to bring outsiders in to Phaendar(Pathfinder society, anyone?) , so as not to restrict player freedom of choice.

Caster4life, I know your sheet is incomplete but how did you end up with 6 str? Even if you dumped all the way it'd be 7 for aasimar (looking from daylight).

My character's background is one step away from being a PFS member, I can easily switch it to a full-time membership, it would fit my chosen archetype. I just thought it would be a hassle as it would make his primary goal establishing contact with the nearest lodge rather than survival/vengeance per se and thus he would have less incentive to stay with the group.

I previously played this character, a lizardfolk ranger, in an Ironfang Invasion game that petered out during the initial scene of the opening adventure. I'd love to give it a try again, though I understand if this is too far afield to fit what you have in mind, DM.

I'm a regular poster who's been on the boards for a few years and I run a few games, so I'm not going to disappear any time soon (barring some kind of disaster - let's hope not!).

I live in Pacific Standard Time zone, and I usually update between 1 PM and 5 PM PST on weekdays, or weekend evenings.

I am more than happy to make changes to this character to accommodate. He's designed to be able to tackle the front line and help the group with wilderness survival and travel.

Hey, GM. Thanks for the query. I decided to embrace the MADness that is a shaman trying to cover all of those roles and made an old character so I had -3 to all physical stats +2 to all mental. If you dislike the age bonuses/penalties, no problem. It won't take much to adjust to have no age bonuses/penalties but just flavor as older.

But I re-checked the point buy and, laughably enough, I actually get a better trade being middle-aged so I'm going with that, if you have no objections.

Edit: Ok I think I'm good to go now. Ready for more feedback, if you have the time/inclination to give it. :)

Another edit: Gotcha. No problem. Just like PFS. Re-calculating stats.

I do not allow character age bonuses/penalties.

Should be good now. It just changes my wisdom from 19 to 18 so quite easy.

Albion waits patiently...

Yep! Changed it right after I posted. Also, I didn't mention that I plan to take the human favored class bonus (through scion of humanity) at certain levels to pick up key cleric spells. Thought that might be relevant.

Also excited to see results. Lots of applications here!

Fingers crossed. Did I keep halfling luck? I hope I kept halfling luck.

I don't appear to be on the tally sheet, though I submitted before the close?

Yep. Looking forward to hearing results. Good luck, all. :D

Core, Featured and Uncommon races from here only. Lizardfolk are on neither of the lists.

Hey Mort! This is RH's second applicant, just in case you like someone's meat shield better than Ratel. Let me introduce, Hyder, a happy-go-lucky gnome who aspires to be a glass cannon :-)

Just under the wire I hope, here is a tough, gritty wilderness-focused rogue submitted for your approval. I'm in the Pacific Time Zone, which is GMT-7, though I tend to post all throughout the day and even sometimes very late at night/early in the morning (like now!). I guess on weekdays I usually become available about 4pm GMT and continue through until about 7am GMT.

I went ahead and put a quick synopsis on Hyder's page. If he is selected I will give a description and personality traits.

Thanks for the consideration, Mort!

Good luck everyone.

Recruitment has officially ended. I have selected Dax Thura, Albion and Robert Henry, after deciding to take one more then previously stated.

Selected players, please move to the discussion thread

Thank you for your efforts in the submissions.

Have fun, all!

Thanks! Have fun.

Wow, thanks for picking me GM Mort, among so many strong applications.

To all others not chosen this time: good luck in finding a game, and see you around the boards!

Thank you for the consideration and good luck you guys :).

Yes, thank you for the opportunity! Have fun :)

Good luck to the chosen ones!

Good luck folks!

My name is Mort and I am looking for someone to take over the character of the party magus, to preserve story line continuity and NPC interactions. I have gotten his permission for this.

If you wish to take over his character - you will take over the character as it is now. No changes can be made to the character(until next retraining opportunity, if it ever occurs - which is unlikely). Further level ups are subject to the character advancement rules as stated below.

I intend for this game to progress at a fast pace.

I WILL do multiple posts per day. I expect that all of you will try for 2x/day posting. Since my crew is now American/Australian I am looking for a player that can post at 10 pm to 5am and 9 am - 1 pm GMT.

Should you have RL commitments that make you unable to do so, please inform me in the discussion thread. I’m not totally unreasonable.

The maps will be provided on Google Drive. Please make sure you can access to Google Maps whatever device you’re posting on. I don’t discriminate against phone users, I am one myself.

Character Advancement:

Sources: All Paizo(subject to caveats under individual categories). Trap the Soul and Animate dead type spells are not allowed. Sacred Geometry Feat is not allowed. Boots of the Earth are not allowed. No Third party allowed.
Race: Common, Featured and Uncommon races with the following exceptions: No Svirfneblin, Fetchlings and Drow. You cannot create your own Aasimar/Tiefling variants and can only use those found in ARG, Blood of Fiends and Blood of Angels. You cannot roll for variant Aasimar or Tiefling abilities.
Alignment: Any non evil
Class: Any Paizo. No Third Party allowed.
Point Buy - 20
Deities: All Golarion
Background skills are in play.
HP – max for first level, 1/2max+1 after
No PVP.

As can be seen by what I said about myself, I am a LN GM. Futhermore, as one of the new GMs, I have limited ability to homebrew or change encounters. Therefore with those considerations in mind, I ask all of you to show some restraint in building characters(including characters that may derail the mod/AP in question). Or are waaay more powerful then members of the party leading leading to situations like this
Pathfinder is a social contract between the players and the GM. It's no fun if the GM has to roll a natural 20 all the time to hit you, or if combat is over because you murderhobo everything the moment it comes to your init roll. I also ask that as a party your cooperate with each other, feel free to build your characters around each other etc.
Yes, a certain amount of cheese is required(since I am somewhat of a combat tactician), but not TOO much, please. I rather that the party works together to overcome challenges then one person stealing the show.

Gameplay thread

Discussion thread

The recruitment starts now and will end on 3rd November, midnight GMT. The recruitment is shorter then usual as prospective players do not need to go through character creation and are taking over another character.

I will be vetting applicants by posting history.

If I cannot find any suitable candidates, then I will continue running IronFang Invasion with the current party.

Grand Lodge

I originally applied with Nex Lupe. But would love to take over the character seem like a fun RP challenge.

I have no issue with a fast pace. You can see my my games that I post regularly. Most of the games I am in have short post, though the Kingmaker game typically uses a longer form posting style and rune lords mod has very much complex combats. Feel free to look through them.

OK recruitment is closed. Grandlounge, please report to discussion and gameplay thread.
