1 person marked this as a favorite.

Legend holds that the Book of Terniel has the power to give each reader their heart’s greatest desire. However, there is always a cost, often dire. Now, the book has been opened and its power can be felt across the land. Four powerful factions compete for the artifact, and in the middle of those factions – you! Will you choose a side or claim the Book of Terniel for yourself?

This is an open recruitment for up to 5 players for the Book of Terniel, published by Embers Design Studio Characters start at lvl 1 and should be lvl 4 by the completion of the story.

The adventure takes place in the Valley of the Kings – a non-Golarion setting. A brief overview can be found HERE

Player Expectations:
Once per day posting, more relaxed on the weekends. Communication is key. If you’re unable to post for any length of time, let me know. Keeping things moving is important for everyone’s enjoyment, so if you can’t post for more that 48 hours or so, expect to be DMPCed. Most importantly though - looking for players that are interested in contributing to telling a story. Selected players please create an alias profile for your character. I prefer roll20 for maps but understand that it is difficult for most people to access on mobile devices so will be sticking with google this time round.

Character Creation:

I’d like interested players to submit a brief character background and personality sketch, along with a rough outline of your crunch. Completed character stats and alias will not be required unless selected.
Level: 1; max HP (1/2+1 afterwards); average starting wealth
Stats 20 pt buy
Alignment: Any
Classes: Any core, base, hybrid or unchained. Sorry, no occult classes. See 3PP tab below for more options.
Traits: 2. Campaign traits available only from those listed in the campaign tab. No drawbacks.

Character Tips (excerpt from player’s guide)
Big and Small: You’ll be squaring off against lots of goblinoids and more than a few giants, too. Both are great choices for abilities such as the ranger’s favoured enemy class feature.
Brain Power: On more than one occasion, blundering forward with your sword first and your brains last is liable to land you in the dead book. Use caution; sometimes you run across things that are just bigger and badder than you are.
Deep Dark Bog: You’re going to spend some time in the swamp. Come prepared with someone trained up in Survival, and while you’re at it, familiarize yourself with the rules of aquatic and bog terrain.
Incessant Chatter: It might seem like everything is meant to be hit with a stick, but try talking to a few things. You never know which of your “enemies” might be willing to parley. You are not likely to go wrong with a bit of training in Diplomacy and Sense Motive.
It’s a Trap: Do your fighters a favour and bring along someone able to disable traps. Stumbling through them is always an option, but there are better ways.
Local Fare: Consider making a character local to the valley. Not only will your Knowledge (Local) skill be handy for identifying the strengths of monsters, but there’s a wealth of secrets available only to characters from the area.

3PP stuff:
As you may have guessed from my choice of adventures, I am a voracious consumer of 3PP, and I’ll accept character submissions drawn from the list below. I don’t want the party to be a crazy mishmash of impossibility either though, so I’m reserving 1 spot for 3PP race and/or class, and may accept others if their background is not too jarring to the setting or is really good. Here’s a list of stuff that I own and am most interested in seeing in play. If there is something not on this list that you’d like to try, feel free to sell me on it.
Alluria – Remarkable Races
Amora - Liber Influxus Communis
Dreadfox – Ritualist, Swordmaster
Drop Dead – Spheres of Power
Interjection - Ethermagic, Truename magic
Kobold Press – Adv Races: Centaurs
Purple Duck - Legendary Races: Sphinx
Rite Publishing – In the company of Gargoyles, Fey, Minotaurs, Dragons; Divine Channelling
Rogue Genuis – Armiger, Death Mage, Godling, Mosaic Mage, Shadow Assassin, Time Thief
TPK – Scions of stone, Deductionist

About Me:
I’ve been RPGing for decades, most of that time with the many iterations D&D and Pathfinder. I’ve run several successful long term PBPs and PBEMs. I enjoy diving into the numbers and stats of the game but never at the expense of a good story, and abhor getting bogged down in rules debates that usually succeed in nothing but slowing down the game.

You forgot to mention race restrictions.

Any core, featured, or uncommon is fine if its attached to a good story.

I am interested, but will have to think about this. A few questions:

1) When do you expect to select the players? In other words: when do I need to submit my background?
2) Do the characters know each other at the start?
3) Is the backstory how the characters met (depending on 2) a given or something the characters decide on?
4) Is an all-race x party an option? (thinking of something native to swamps)

Liberty's Edge

Let me see what I can come out with.

dotting for interest - looks a cool setting... will get my muse on.

I'm interested; even have a rudimentary character concept - a half-elf swamp rat (brawler with the wild child archetype).

Magabeus wrote:

My plan is to recruit for seven days - so until Tues Jan 12, and make a final decision sometime Wed

Magabeus wrote:

The adventure starts with the PCs knowing each other, but specifics can be worked out in discussion pre-game

Magabeus wrote:

Certainly not a given - you have control over your character's backstory.

Magabeus wrote:

Its an option, but I don't want to have to rewrite the first chapter to fit a group that would have no business traipsing a human-centric rural village.

Sounds like a fun character!

Mainly, I'm wondering how would Spheres of Power magic be used with regular old magic?

Would any spells at all exist in the world, or would it be all sphere abilities? Reason I ask is that I'd be interested in trying out a SOP character, and I'd like to know exactly how the two systems would work in your world. Thanks in advance for your answers. This sounds like a fun game.

Sounds intresting, may I ask you one thing for 3PP stuff: Jotun Race and Joutn Paragon class both by Rite publishing.
Edit: *Jotun Paragon Class not Joutn Paragon Class

Hi Gerald. I considered running this as a SOP only game at first, but decided against it in the end. Since the adventure starts and finishes below 5th level, and since most feedback I've read suggests that low level SOP casters are more versatile and if anything slightly more powerful than low level traditional casters I think the two systems should be able to coexist, at least for the purposes of this game anyway.

Regarding traditions and other particulars, I'd like to hammer those out collaboratively with the players once recruitment is done.

And while I'm at it, a general note for divine characters: I've only listed a basic triumvirate of deities in the campaign tab, but if none of them fit your concept, we can work together to build one that does ( avoiding obvious minmaxing like elven curve blade-travel-growth silliness)

@ legoguy4492: Jotun eh? Been a while since I looked at that one, but sure, why not? Might even open up some neat RP opportunities given the nature of the adventure.

Interested in a possible Scion of Stone, or a Gargoyle from In the Company of Gargoyles, Time Thief.

I might do a Witch, mabye Slyph,Half-elf, Human or Orc(Scarred Witch)

Paizo Employee Design Manager

Is there still an open spot? I might be interested in running an Entobian Battle Lord (either Scout or Medic).

Yep, recruitment open until Tues.

and . . . an Entobian Battle lord!? Awesome!

How does a grippli metamorph (primal/bestial) sound? [Or maybe ratfolk... or a grippli alchemist ...]

Well if Ssalarn is interested, and its the awesome Book of Terniel (just backed the follow up Kickstarter) I'm interested.

Looking at a Human Synergist...

This is Oceanshieldwolf's character synopsis - crunch can be completed as soon as requested...

Name: Raidh Angharad
Race/Class: Human Synergist (Liber Influxus Communis)

Raidh is an Amorean from Redgrove, on the outermost reaches of the Eastdale region. Though far from the Zaran Wood, occasional far-flung raids by the most desperate goblins still occur in this area.

Raidh, the daughter of horse-trainers who lived well in the hinterlands, was an adventurous tomboy from an early age - she would explore the near featureless wilderness for hours, and as she grew older became braver and to her parents' constant vexation given the goblin presence, reckless.

[Raidh saw or experienced something one night while camping, but whatever it was, she never did tell her parents, or anyone, about it.]

Glad then, were Raidh's parents when quite unexpectedly she seemed to come to her senses and dutifully took her turn in the Redgrove militia as is usual for the town's youth upon coming of age. Raidh proved an apt martial pupil, learning spear combat and fighting in armor, channeling much of her boundless energy into a more disciplined way of life. Her captain pressed her to stay, seeing in her a future sergeant and one day perhaps captain, but Raidh was too interested in seeing more of the world than the town she had grown more than tired of.

Having completed her year of service, Raidh travelled the land, finding her way easily among her fellow Amoreans. Now, she finds herself in Erien.

Riadh is easygoing if a little brash and can come across as opinionated, as is not uncommon for accomplished and confident frontier folk. Still, she has a natural way with people, and is genuinely caring and (otherwise) considerate.

Raidh is Neutral Good and has the Citizen of the Valley: Wilds Campaign Trait.

I will not put a character up for consideration: PbP roster is already full enough.

Have fun everyone!

GM Irondesk - would you consider another 3PP class - Tripod Machine's Corbie?

Seems the perfect fit for my down at heel soldier of (mis)fortune that I'm mulling.

Another wee query - I'm a huge fan of traits - love interlinking them to character backgrounds. Know we are allowed 2 traits - is the Additional Traits feat permissible as a starting feat?

Cheers

@ Black Dow: Corbie is good to go - a flavourful class. Additional traits, assuming they are indeed tied to backstory is fine too.

@Oceanshiledwolf: It is an awesome adventure isn't it? I'm glad their latest endeavour funded. Raidh's submission looks good. No crunch required until character selection is decided on tues.

@Distant Scholar: Grippli would probably fit better than ratfolk, given the swampy locale.

Alrighty GM, I'm going to put together my first SOP caster. If you see any screw ups, please let me know, and I'll get them lined out ASAP.

I hope to have the character complete by the end of the weekend. My original plans are to try an Incanter. However, if there are roles that need to be filled, let me know and I could easily do a Hedgewitch, and they are so adaptable, that I could use one of them to cover any roles unfilled.

If you have a preference, or have problems with any of the specific spheres, just let me know and I'll adjust accordingly.

GM IronDesk wrote:

Grippli it is then. I'm a bit unsure where in the Valley grippli might come from, though. If you want fewer 3PP classes, I'll go with a bogborn beastmorph (vivisectionist?) alchemist instead of a metamorph.

There are grippli in the fetid bog north west of Eiren. ( see campaign tab for map)

I'm not worried about too much 3PP. Honestly, the metamorph sounds less complex than bogborn beastmorph alchemist. Play what most interests you.

@ Gerald: Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

GM IronDesk - thanks for the consideration and feedback, but alas I'm going to have to drop out of the recruitment... some other games have kicked into higher gear, and I reckon you've already got the makings of a great group of players (and campaign) here.

Thanks for the consideration and happy gaming all.

Cheers

BD

How would an orc fit in the valley of the kings? If one wouldn't, tell me and I will go with a character of another race.

Never mind, I will use human half-elf

Half-elf is preferable to orc. Are you still considering a witch?

Here is Dolph, Gerald's Incanter. Since I wasn't sure what party roles we would have covered, I can do a little bit of healing as well as blasting, etc. Since I really want to try out the sphere system, I plan on most, if not all of my feats to be those getting me extra spheres and talents. I can change things as needed.

Looks great Gerald!

Will be closing out recruitment tomorrow midnight. So far we've go submissions from:

Oceanshieldwolf - Raidh Angaharad - human synergist
Gerald - Rodolpho Santiwale - human incanter

And interest shown from:
legoguy4492 - half-elf witch
Distant Scholar - grippli metamorph
Ssalarn - entobian battle lord
dragondorn - gargoyle. time thief
Zack Muad'Dweeb - half elf brawler
Corsario - ??

Zack Muad'dweeb here with a working draft of my submission.

When trappers brought the infant back to their isolated community on the outskirts of the Fetid Bog, some wanted them to return it to where they found it. The boy would be another mouth to feed, and besides he was no kin of theirs - with his gently pointed ears and golden-hued eyes, it was clear that there was elf blood in his veins. But the village matriarch would not hear of it, the child was human too. To deny him their hospitality would bring down the wrath of the Goddess.

With no clues to his parentage or birthplace, the trappers named him Wolf-Eyes on account of the way his eyes caught and reflected light. He grew up learning the ways of the swampfolk, how to navigate through and live off the wetlands. His constant companion is a mongrel dog he calls Dewall.

Eiren is familiar to him - the swampfolk often cross the river to trade with the villagers.

Kee-rik, grippli metamorph.

Character Background:
The grippli living in what humans call the "Fetid Bog" lead a simple life. They feel no need for fancy tools or buildings, instead living close to nature. A very few, however, have been blessed by the Goddess with even closer ties to nature. These select individuals have, or gain, features more like animals, and live more like animals as well, outside the grippli villages. They may protect the villages from outside forces, keep the swamps as a whole from being despoiled, or wander the world in search of the Goddess' will. Which one Kee-rik is will depend on how the campaign starts.

Personality Sketch:
Kee-rik is more curious and inquisitive than others of his kind, particularly about the drylands, although he may not yet have ventured there. He likes to watch people and animals (and mobile plants), and see what they do. His curiosity extends to technology, although he doesn't understand it very well. Kee-rik doesn't speak much, and is a gentle, amiable soul. He's more likely to leave a uncomfortable situation than to try to change it. He's not afraid to confront evil, however, when needed.

Crunch Outline:
male NG grippli metamorph (primal, bestial)
Str 12 / Dex 16 / Con 14 / Int 10 / Wis 16 / Cha 10
Evolutions: Bite, Claws, Improved Damage (bite)
Skills: Climb, Perception, Stealth, Survival, Swim / Knowledge (nature) and Knowledge (arcana) coming soon
Feat: Weapon Finesse
Gear: net, some rations, sling, maybe a sickle, not much else

I'm open to opinions on the crunch, if anyone sees anything too 'weak.' Small melee characters have something of a built-in disadvantage.

Let me know what else you might need for a formal submission.

Oh, forgot to say I didn't do any shopping, yet. I just copied over some from most of my level one mages. I'll do specific shopping if selected.

Sovereign Court

Here is my person, I just need to complete stats

Kee-rik and Wolf Eyes look good to go - nothing else needed for a formal submission at this stage. And by the by, great job tying together the very scant background info you had to work with.

legoguy4492 - no need to complete stats at this point. Instead, I need to see a couple of short paragraphs describing your character's background and personality. That will give me a better idea of your character than a stat line ever could, and give me something to start building the adventure around.

This is Ssalarn's character synopsis - crunch can be completed upon acceptance. (If any details are too specific, I can adjust as necessary.)

Name: Morgtii
Race/Class: Entobian Battle Lord (Remarkable Races, Liber Influxus Communis)

Morgtii had always been on of the most curious larvae in its hive, often wandering far from their marshy home to investigate other creatures and species. Morgtii's first long expedition to the quiet town of Erien was a defining moment in its young life, as it made its first true friend in the odd elf Tsarian, who rescued it from a misunderstanding that had nearly turned violent (Sheriff Anissa had mistaken Morgtii for some type of strange mutant goblin and was attempting to run it out of town).

Morgtii returned to its hive full of excitement, eager to tell its hivemates of the amazing creatures it had met and the friend it had made, only to come upon an horrific discovery: its hive, every single larvae, every coleophite, every eulite, even the clever farfalites who guided and protected the hive with their spells, all of them were gone! Morgtii searched frantically for weeks unable to find them.

Finally, exhausted and beyond hope, Morgtii crawled back to Erien. The townspeople were unsure exactly what to make of the story told by the strange little grub, though one little girl's claim that Morgtii's hive may have been "eaten by old Grimtooth" has filled Morgtii with a deep dread.

Spending weeks around town assisting its members with their various tasks, Morgtii has earned some respect and acceptance from the people of Erien, and learned some martial training and additional survival skills from its new friend Tsarian. Tsarian's skills as a ranger have blended oddly with Morgtii's insectile mind, whose natural inclinations to think of itself as a small part of a greater whole make it a natural leader and capable coordinator on the battlefield. Morgtii's burgeoning skill in combat has also begun to fill it with new confidence and courage, and it often thinks about traveling back into the nearby wilds, hoping to find some trace of its lost hive, or perhaps even some hint of where it can find this "Grimtooth" creature, perhaps to confront it for any information on its lost family.

Morgtii is Neutral Good and has the Bog Walker Regional trait and Wilds Campaign trait.

Liberty's Edge

I would like to propose an human female druid, follower of the Goddess, filling the niche of caster, healer and face.
About her background, the only child of a druid family, that saw since her early childhood how the goddess protected and provided for her community, from her immediate family to her hometown.
But puberty strikes, and she has decided that staying in a place all of her life is a mistake, one that her parents fell into, and that the real way is to travel, helping people when they most need it. She stormed out of home one day, after a big fight with her father, and now travels forward more on a sense of stubbornness than of a real wish of being then and there.
She is young, idealistic, and pretty, filled with romantic ideas about what lies beyond her secluded childhood.

Dark Archive

I have decided not to go with my original idea for my character. I am working on a Human Incanter using Spheres of Power.

Jaysin Catarn has lived a mostly peaceful life in the valley (Citizen of the Valley Trait) learning to use his powers. It has taken him till his 27th birthday to learn these powers without a mentor because magic works differently for him than it it does for most other mages. He is ready now to go out into the world and try to do some good with his powers.

He can move objects without touching them (Telekinesis Sphere) and can teleport to places (Warp Sphere).

Str:10 Dex:14 Con:12 Int:19(Casting Stat) Wis:10 Cha:10
HP:9
Skill Points:6

I just noticed someone else has already made an Incanter. Darn.

Three more great submissions. Thanks everybody for your interest!

Oceanshieldwolf - Raidh Angaharad - human synergist
Gerald - Rodolpho Santiwale - human incanter
Distant Scholar -Kee-rik - grippli metamorph
Ssalarn - Morgtii - entobian battle lord
Zack Muad'Dweeb - Wolf Eyes - half elf brawler
Corsario - - human druid
Dragodorn - Jaysin Catarn - Human incanter

What would be a nice name for a female human child of Druid parents in this setting?
A flower name?
Daisy? Rose?
What about Rose Sloboda?

I like Lilly as well.

If they're hipster druids, you could go with a deep cut like Hyacinth or Anemone

My character is Xavelor, in case anybody was confused about who posted earlier: This is his background.

character background:
Xavelor lived a happy life as a child in his town, although he has a adventurous streak, which got him in trouble quite a few times. His life was uneventful until the age of 25, when exploring in the woods, he came across a tribe of orcs. A chieftain was rallying them, telling them about subverting other orcs and eventually attacking the town, when the time was right. Xavelor immediately rushed back and told the townsfolk, who told him he was crazy. He, believing that everybody was very ignorant, shut himself off, trying to find ways to save the town. However, before long, his own isolation made him crazy. Rumors were spread that he was practicing witchcraft, and the townspeople hated witchcraft. They showed up at his door, shouting and burning down his home. He barely escaped. He retreated into the woods, where he found "Compy" his best friend and familiar. Still convinced there was going to be an orc attack, he watched and waited. He waited so long, that before long, even he was starting to disbelieve his own words. Until one day, it happened. Xavelor ran in, but he was no match for their sheer numbers. He woke up under a pile of bodies, he was lucky to survive. Xavelor felt extreme sorrow and anger at this slaughter, but knew what had to be done. He buried all he bodies, and made a vow, one that he will never let this happen again, and he would try to destroy all evil, no matter the cost

Personality, Xavelor is smart, though uncharismatic, he is like a stereotypical nerd in some ways. He has a strong desire to destroy evil

Liberty's Edge

I have to say I liked the Hyacinth name, and the flower that it names.

Sovereign Court

Character done!

...and recruitment is closed.

Selections will be posted sometime tomorrow in the am

Woke up this morning to 40 cm of snow and a crashed laptop. I won't be able to post anything further until later this afternoon. Sorry for the delay and thank you for your patience.

Gerald - Rodolpho Santiwale - human incanter
Distant Scholar -Kee-rik - grippli metamorph
