Ohaio, chummers!
As some of you know, I plan on GM'ing a few (at least) "beginner runs" for the SR 4e system. This is mostly so I can get a firm grasp on the rules and how different SR4 is from say, SR2-3 (which I was pretty familiar with back in the day.)
Several people have already proposed characters, such as:
Which leaves basically one more "definite" slot and at least a couple of alternates, especially for such an "episodic" game.
For those who haven't built their characters, use the standard CharGen from SR4 (I have the Anniversary Edition, but I think they're the same in that respect) of 400 BP, no stat over 6, etc.
Background is up to you, but try to have some reason you're in Seattle and looking for basically entry-level shadowrun gigs.
You will all have a free Contact (at level 1, unless you buy him up) of a local Barkeep/part-time Fixer, to be named later.
I am open to any questions, concerns, or comments. Bear in mind, this will be my "shakedown run" for both the SR4 rules and GM'ing a PbP, so go easy and feel free to provide plenty of feedback.
Lock & load, chummers, let's roll!

Well, I think we might actually need someone to take care of such negligibilities as physical combat, electronics, break&entry-stuff... instead of three mages. ;)
Agreed. Currently there are an adept (melee & infiltration) and a chaos mage definite.
With MisterLurch's troll mage (i'm assuming a melee or spell-based combat mage), the "magic user" role is pretty thoroughly filled. I'm not sure what Buck is going to play, but IRL he's usually flexible.
I would suggest a vehicle/security specialist, a social type specialist, and an electronics/hacker specialist. If that means cyber, technomancy, or magic, have at it.
Your free contact is named George St. Cloud, a human bartender and part-time Fixer. He works as something of a "talent scout" for some of the mid-level players in Seattle. He'll start at Rank 1 Contact for you all, as brand-new runners in the sprawl, and will be the primary point of contact driving these first few runs.
Note, you aren't a "team" as of yet, which is why St. Cloud has provided you with a low-level offer.

Instead of Gh0st, I could make a Wheelman/Social Adept I've been thinking about.
RainyDayNinja, that sounds like a plan. That would yield a support mage, a combat (i guess), a melee adept, a security/hacker, and a social adept/driver. Sounds like a pretty well set team overall. You might be a little light on gunplay, but the two mages & some drones should more than make up for that.
Still waiting to hear from Pinvendor if he' s still interested.
I'm looking forward to this.

Rock on!
for easy reference: Gameplay thread
Looks like everything is shaping up nicely...we should be good to go when RainyDayNinja, autobuck, and MisterLurch are all set with their PC's.
I'd like to get another player (Pinvendor had expressed interest, as did a couple of others) but we can run with 5 just fine.

One potential issue; Salazar doesn't appear to have any contacts.
You at least know George (Barkeep/Fixer, Connection 1/Loyalty 1) to start.
May want to pick up some more, but that's your choice.
(Note, I'm generally a very laissez f'aire type of GM, and SR allows for many different successful approaches.)
As far as the avatar problems...if you can dig up pic you'd like, just link it in your profile and grab a placeholder image from paizo.

Well, does it always have to come down to "is it worth the cost"?
While YMMV, and everybody can do it as we likes, of course, I personally feel like every runner should have some contacts.
I mean, if people have just moved to the city, it's understandable if they only have one or two contacts, but a Runner who "grew up" in the city you play in who doesn't happen to know ANYBODY...?
Seriously...?
It gets better if such runners are supposed to be master socialites (who obviously never trained their skills on real people) or pack high-end weapons and cyberware that even needed the restricted gear quality and (fluff-wise) specialists who got them for you (or put them in your body) - after all, you don't just happen to pull such things out of your top hat. ^^
And if it isn't a "barkeep Johnson who recruits whoever enters his tavern and tells him he was a runner"-scenario, how exactly does a Johnson choose your character if you don't know anybody who could've told the Johnson that you're a runner searching for a job?

Garus Wintersmith |

@Jak:
How did you get a Power Focus Rating 5 and a Weapon Focus Rating 4? Those have an availability of 25R/20R.
Maximum availability at character creation is 12.
Even the restricted gear quality (which you don't have) only allows an item of avail 20 or less (one item per 5 BP you put in the quality).
Now that I look at the qualities... The maximum amount of BPs you can get out of negative qualities is 35.

Garus Wintersmith |

@Salazar:
Those are obviously GM's calls, as they're probably allowed by RAW, but I just thought I'd remark them as strange...
A MAD scanner built into contact lenses?
An Ares Predator IV in a hidden arm slide, concealed in an Actioneer Suit? ... ... :D
Sorry, but how exactly do you want to hide such a freakingly heavy pistol in the sleeve of a tuxedo, and how do you want to get it out through the cuffs?

Fraust |

I'd be interested in making something up for this if you still have room. Sounds like things are pretty full though, so I'm expecting a negative.
If you do have space I'd love to try out something hacker oriented, though I'm open to fill any gaps the group needs.
If you don't have the space, I wish you guys the best of luck. It's good to see the increase interest in SR around here lately.

![]() |

Good catch, Garus.
@Jak, yes maximum availability is 12 for starting characters...
So maximum starting Force rating for either of those is @ 2. But this way you're much less in debt!
@Salazar: Likewise, Visual Enhancement is not an issue, but a MAD scanner (even rank 1) is something the size of a "pat-down-wand" as used by Police , concert security, and the TSA (Like This Guy Here). Obviously, miniaturization has taken place, but you'd still need goggles or something similar (or have the display link extra and simply carry a hand-held MAD scanner)
The arm-slide thing I'm OK with as such, just don't expect it to go unnoticed as much as say a light or holdout pistol.
Regarding Contacts: (from the 20th Anniversary Edition, pg88)
Contacts are your acquaintances, buddies, and assorted street informants
(for full details, see Contacts, p. 285). These are the people your
character turns to when he needs to track down information, acquire
black market goods, put the word out, or otherwise seek out a favor.
Each contact has both a Connection rating (from 1 to 6) that
indicates exactly how influential and useful that contact can be and
a Loyalty rating (also 1 to 6) that infers how much of a sacrifice the
contact will make on the character’s behalf. The contact’s BP cost is
equal to his or her Connection rating + Loyalty rating. Connection
and Loyalty are described in detail on pp. 285–286.
You should be careful to purchase at least two contacts during
character creation—more if your character is a social networking type
and/or is likely to have or need them. You don’t want to be caught on
the cold streets of the sprawl without any friends.
Even having 1 or 2 known contacts on the streets can be the difference between jobs and no jobs, or survival in a tough situation.
@Fraust: Absolutely! Autobuck is working up a hacker/security type, and should have him up by tonight/tomorrow, but if you wanted to do a hacker/matrix type, or even a combat hacker type, that'd be good as well. I was looking for 6 players total, after all.

Yeah, standard char-gen rules in place (400 BP, nothing over Availablility 12, stats, etc.) But books like unwired/arsenal/etc are groovy.
Bear in mind I'm still learning the ruleset, and PbP may get a little slow during combat.
It will help out if everyone breaks down their rolls & actions to start off.
Also, everyone starts with a free contact (George St. Cloud, Connection 1 / Loyalty 1; Barkeep/Part-time Fixer).
Gameplay will start at Micky's Place, George's bar.

Garus Wintersmith |

Still too many negative qualities. Maybe my wording wasn't entirely clear. The 35 point maximum is a total maximum, not a "per quality" maximum.
Day Job (20 hrs/week, -> Barback, Miky’s Place) -10
In Debt (5,000¥, 7,500¥ owed -> James “Jimmy the Fist” Federici) ? -5
Uncouth -20
Scorched -5
Sensitive Neural Structure -5
Geas (Astrally Perceiving) -10
Total: -55
Maximum: -35

@All: I've posted that link in the old thread(s) already, but there's a good character generation and advancement tool available for free here. It encompasses every official book (you can choose which are available), is updated regularly, is customizable for houserules and calculates everything for you.
