yay!!! (same, but with baby-induced delay)

Ugh. I absolutely hated this recruitment, so, so much. I contemplated a lot of ways I could possibly get more people in (including more tables), but given the amount of stress of this week (with the recruitment-stress on top of that), I decided it would definitely be best not to add two new threads in which I had a lot more responsibility.

Had the week gone better, I might have wound up doing two tables of three with an NPC, or maybe something a little different from that...

Narrowing it down to five was absolutely horrible. I had no idea recruitments sucked this bad (given, that I hate letting people down. :()

If you haven't gotten a PM regarding why I wound up not selecting you, then that means you're in. But to make that easier...

Flying Jack
Kesin
Rakhel Aulamaxa
Adonara Strixis
Lia Vantas

Everything was really, really close, in the end.

Here's what I personally discovered, during recruitment:

1) People who directly answered the questions tended to make characters that were either more cohesive, or at the very least, easier to understand.

2) I preferred reading the answers and stories in first person. It's a lot easier to see someone's personality and point of view on things when I can readily see it.

3) My feedback was often taken either very seriously (perhaps too seriously) or not at all. Regardless, constant feedback was exceedingly difficult.

4) More is not always better. There was a sweet spot somewhere between TL;DR and not enough. Many of those chosen were on the TL;DR side, but I would still strive to try to condense your character. A few paragraph-long memories tells me more about your character than a 20+ paragraph essay. Especially if it's dry.

Remember that someone is having to read all of this, perhaps multiple times, to figure out what they can do to make cool things happen for your character throughout the story. I really appreciated when people were brief, yet still managed to tell their story.

5) Cohesion. This was perhaps the most important thing to me. Things shouldn't feel tacked on as an afterthought.

6) Hooks. Communicate with the DM about what sort of hooks you're looking for. Villains, Allies, Goals, all of these are extremely important. You can make an amazing character, with an amazing story, but I absolutely have to have a way to make the campaign yours. This may not always be the case, but as a DM, this should be your story.

7) Everyone had good, possibly exceedingly good characters. The thing that wound up being the last determining factor wound up being party cohesion. Plot lines that I could follow, and ways that I hoped players would interact with one another in interesting ways. That's not something you can really control, but when it came down to the last pick, it wound up playing the biggest role: How will character's goals and personalities overlap with one another?

* * *

Again, this was ridiculously hard. Don't feel bad if you weren't picked, and I'm incredibly sorry that I couldn't take everyone. :(

Congratulations to the chosen players! I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun!

Thanks much for the consideration and the feedback Hot. It was a fun and useful process to go through! Hope everyone has a grand time.

Oops oops oops. Thank you for putting up with my terrible verbiage, though.

I learned there is a maximum profile size in this recruitment -_-

Thanks for the pick, and congrats to all for making great characters-

It's no problem. It inherently comes from the fact that I'm not really a big fan of Tolkien. A page to describe a cup that never plays another role in the story, for the sake of 'window dressing', still doesn't add anything to the story. :P Except, you know... a page.

Dang slow spell got me again...

Mmm drat didn't notice this till too late ;(

Appearance:

Often hunching his shoulders Kenshiro is still freakishly tall for his kind at 6 feet. Despite this be is better known among his kind for his midnight black feathers. His feathers are true black without the blueish hue of most Tengu. If you couldn't pick Kenshiro out in a crowd by his feathers or his height, you certainly could by the tattoos he has on his beak and claws.

Personality:

Split between who he is and who he wants to be, Kenshiro often comes off as a schizophrenic narcissistic/monk. He is a people pleaser and a competitive swordsman. He makes up for his lack of discipline by exploiting his natural desire to show off to push himself forward.

Character Backstory:

Growing up the child of two samurai in service to a local crime family Kenshiro was expected to follow in his parents footsteps. However he lacked the discipline and desire, if not the skill to become a samurai in service to the clan. His parents tried to discipline him but he would just make wise cracks and show off more. So Although Kenshiro loved sword play he spent as much time as he could hanging out with lower members of the clan(the grifters, thieves, ect). It is here that he first learns that he love, craves, and needs the praise he receives for his antics. This is where he first becomes aware of how much of a driving force in life it is for him.

Upon his epiphanym he decides to take action using the skills that he gained in the underworld. Kenshiro takes his show on the road as a professional swordsman/fighter and all around entertainer. During his journey he learns of the goddess Shizuru and becomes a worshipper. He lives to incorporate her worship into his daily routine and vowing to improve his swordsmanship.

Traveling from city to city concerto finallu finds himself in Kithargo. The first couple of shows go well but the inquisitors soldiers break up the third. More importantlu they disrupted Kenshiros sword play on stage in front of everyone. This was an insult that could not be born so he embarrassed soldiers on stage and disappeared into the crowd.

After escaping into the crowd Kenshiro heads to a local bar to nurse his wounds. This was an out of the way bar, the kind you find in the bad part of town. It is here that he meets the Silver Ravens and is recruited to join them.

Recruitment has been closed for nearly three weeks. :o

I figured he wants to get on the list in case someone drops...
(profile lines still has him as a Dervish Bard with VMC Monk, or, further down, Street Performer, which is not compatible with Dervish Dancer, so not sure if the character was specifically made for this-)
