Mary Dawnrose |

Yes, +2 on the warning, but traps aren't the situation here.
Perception Shadow: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
Reflex: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9
The visuals of the ripple in the ground are subtle, but three of you notice it.
It very rapidly advances....
The ground bursts open, as a 3 feet thick vine rips through the earth in a whip-like manner. Vaunu is quick enough to duck, avoiding the worst.
1d6 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Everyone else gets knocked to their feet, 5ft backards from impact.
The vine takes hold of your guide, and both she and her wolf are yanked into a dark tunnel, created by the vine's movement, which collapses upon retracting.

Alluriel |

Are the vines attackable?
knowledge everything: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
Alluriel tries to identify what the vines are.
Alluriel also tries to see from here, if she can spot the gem the witch was talking about.
perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28

Mary Dawnrose |

No, it emerged, lashed out, and grabbed & withdrew.
Alluriel doesn't spot the gem, probably because the team has only barely set foot in the area.
:P
I've got a course day today, so expect little from me for most of the day, as i won't be back until late afternoon.

Alluriel |

"Sh*t."Alluriel curses as the vines grab hold of Lillaine. "Break Free!" Alluriel screams out.
Liberating Command on Lillaine
Sorry. Not in Alluriel's nature to let someone get dragged to her death. If it fails, Alluriel has to dig at the tunnel to find the pair.

Mary Dawnrose |

Trying to escape, lib comm: 1d20 + 2 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 2 + 10 = 14
"Damn!"
*Surprised howl*
Lillianne and her wolf were unable to escape...
Sorry to say, but there is little left of said tunnel, as the retracting goes. In effect, like keeping upward pressure with an object, suddenly disappearing.

Alluriel |

Alluriel tries to look if there is a way the tunnel can be opened. Detect Magic
"Any of you have a shovel?" She demands of the party. "Stupid witch. She disappeared before telling us how close we could get before the vines would animate." Alluriel curses vehemently. "And now we have someone totally uninvolved dragged into the earth. Was it fair to Lillaine? No. She was just dragged in. If any of us were dragged in, sure, we signed up for this. And now I have no idea how to find her. And we owe it to her for getting her in this mess."
I think Alluriel may insist the party return to the witch's hut and ask for a way to find Lillaine if she cannot be found. Continuing with the quest seems pretty callous.

Alluriel |

"How could you even think about looking for the gem at a time like this?!" Alluriel turns on Vaunu. "If you were dragged under the earth so I should just leave you there, make no attempt to rescue you and leave you to die?!"
The earlier perception check for gem was done because I was ninjaed by the GM, before Lillaine was grabbed
Unlike most players, I'd say, I'm very protective of NPCs. Lillaine had to lead because there was no other choice - none of us have ranks in survival, and we'd just end up no where if anyone else tried.
Alluriel shakes her head. "If you are only interested in the gem, I will return to the witch, asking her if she can locate Lillaine. If she does not, or is unable to, I will not help her retrieve the gem. We have lost too much this day."

Vaunu Tarkkailija |
'If this is the rangers time, then it is her time, there is nothing we can do about it.' Vaunu rolls his eyes, "I did not ask you not to search for her. I said I wasn't good with a shovel. If this creature is here because of the gem, finding it may be the fastest way to save the ranger. Either way, I do not have' a shovel. While I do have the ability to find a gem. I believe the witch would help us faster if we had the gem with us, instead of returning empty handed with only more requests." He then returns to looking for the gem.
perception: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (11) + 12 = 23

Alluriel |

"The creature probably has dragged her down somewhere. It may or may not have to do with the gem. And it may be any of us next being dragged down. By all means, if you wish to look for the gem, feel free. I'm returning to the witch."Throughly fed up with Vaunu's cold blooded attitude, she turns, with Shadow, back to the witch's hut.
I find it too meta to think that finding the gem will find Lillaine. And Alluriel will not help someone who views others as pawns.

Mary Dawnrose |

I'll wait for the other two's opinions, before there's any survival rolls here.
Edit: Although the tunnel had collapsed, how about trying to trace the earth the ripple had disturbed?

Alluriel |

I get the impression that once a creature has gone into the ground so to speak, without a burrow speed and no visible tunnel, there's no way to chase. I was picturing that the vines grabbed,
then disappeared into the hole and that's that.

Mary Dawnrose |

That's how it went, but it would depend on how deep the vine traveled to reach you, and the GM wouldn't be hinting at something otherwise?
Roll a perception check, and if you pass you can use DC 20 survival to follow it for a while.

Alluriel |

perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10
SURVIVAL: 1d20 ⇒ 19
No one in the party is trained in survival either, so DC 20 is pretty much not very makable. If I were to get shadow to track..via scent, I can't wrap the idea of tracking into the earth.

Mary Dawnrose |

Oh i don't know about that. With result of 19, and Vaunu's high perception, you'll manage.
But the post'll come later, i've got stuff to do first.

Mary Dawnrose |

Ok then.
As per survival, perception can be used to find an initial trail, followed by survival.
This is assuming you'd try it.
Vaunu stands at the scene where Lillianne was snatched away.
Being the sneaky perceptive guy that he is, he sees a slight sign of the burrowed earth being a teensy bit lower.
Aid Belegar, Jurgan, Vaunu: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 181d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 161d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17
With combined effort, the group manages to backtrack the disturbances in the earth, with the occasional pauses.
The trail eventually stops near a scene of trees along an open path.
Everyone, a willsave DC 17 please.

Mary Dawnrose |

Okay, then i guess that doesn't happen.
What is the party going to do, follow Alluriel back, or something else?
Belegar and Jurgan's thoughts on how to proceed are yet as mysterious as this region. Just not as vicious and harmful... ^^

Jurgan |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

Jurgan would care little for their guide tbh so if the others wanted to return he would not object...he just hopes not to get lost again

Mary Dawnrose |

The team accompanies Alluriel, as she tries backtracking their route up till here.

Alluriel |

I said I used twine to mark our way here. If it doesn't make a difference that's fine too.
Not to mention since we didn't run off in a hurry, there should be a nice trail of footprints to track back where we came from. Shadow can do the tracking.

Mary Dawnrose |

You didn't specify when i asked if you'd cut it into pieces.
If the twine was kept whole, it wouldn't last over an hour's worth of distance.
But this was a random encounter anyway, in case you wouldn't have Lillianne with you.

Alluriel |

Did say I'd get several balls full, as well as marking the trees.
Besides what's stopping us from retracing our steps via Shadow tracking the way we came, without getting lost. I have no issues with random encounters on the way back, as long as we're moving somewhere.

Mary Dawnrose |

Oi, i forgot you purchased multiple ones? Bad me...
And, rereading scent, survival DC is a lot easier than the survival rolls you guys otherwise have to make.

Alluriel |

"Let it come, then I will try to trap it."
Alluriel readies to calls the wolf's shadow to pin him to the ground, should it approach within 15 ft of any of the party.
Will DC 16 please or glued to the ground.
If Wolfie is stuck
"We might want to pepper it from range." Alluriel notes.
Shadow delays. Need to see if spell worked or not

Jurgan |

Jurgan having seen these beasts before does not even wait for Alluriel to finish as quickly speaks one word a lance of fire flies from the palm of his hand.
Range Touch (Scorching Ray): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
damage: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 1, 4) = 15

Mary Dawnrose |

Jurgan scroches the wolf's fur.
Vaunu delays until after wolfie moves.
Alluriel readies a spell, Shadow delays until after wolfie acts.
Belegar

Infestator wolf (-15)

Belegar Elberion |

Belegar begins to tell a story about an old man who was attacked when lost in the woods. The attacker did not realise that it was an Empyreal Lord in disguise and was shredded to mist.
Ragin song, +2 to str and con, +1 to will saves, -1 to AC. Choose if you want it.

Mary Dawnrose |

Belegar draws his sword, preparing to swing when the wolf should come.
---------------
Wolf (-15)
Will: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20
As the wolf advances, it seems to be unhindered by Alluriel's magic.
Since Jurgan had dare hurt it, he becomes the first target of the wolf's hungry maw.
Bite vs the academic: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14 Hit.
Trip?: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24
Fort vs parasites: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15 No pass.
Jurgan gets his feet pulled from underneath him, as the dire wolf yanks him to the ground. To make matters worse, some parasites lodge inside the bite wound.
Jurgan takes Dmg: 1d6 ⇒ 6 dmg and 2 dex dmg, staggered for 1 turn.

Shadow & Vaunu

Animal companion - Shadow |

Alluriel orders Shadow to flank the wolf, and Shadow does so.
Provoke an AOO from the wolf.
Shadow chooses to take raging song
If Shadow doesn't get tripped
bite: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22
dmg: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
If shadow gets tripped, put one North east of his current position and deduct his attack rolls by 4.

Mary Dawnrose |

1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11 Miss.
Shadow bites the wolf in the hip....and it tastes awful.
Vaunu

Vaunu Tarkkailija |
"Good Kitty!" Smiling as Shadow move to the other side of the wolf, Vaunu slashes at the beast with both his blades
Flank, AC 23, 5ft step, full attack:+ 1 mitheral shortsword/coldiron shortsword 2WF, DS
attack: 1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 8 + 1 = 24 for damage: 1d4 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 4 + 1 = 9 sneak attack: 3d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 6) = 17
attack: 1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 8 + 1 = 21 for damage: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5 sneak attack: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 2) = 7
Vaunu has bleed attack @ 3, does it affect the attack round or just the rounds after?

Mary Dawnrose |

You could only attack once, still hits though.
I have bleed effects go in effect at the start of the victim's turn, not that it matters now.
Vaunu finds a soft spot, and sjashes the wolf across the flank, causing a fatal wound.
Combat over.
Fort Jurgan vs 2nd round parasites: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
Jurgan suffers no harm anymore.

Mary Dawnrose |

Probably following the trail back.
After a bit more than an hour, Alluriel and Shadow get the group back to the witch's home. The sun shines less bright.
The face in the trees reappears.
"Have you returned with my gem?"

Alluriel |

"Our guide, Lillaine was taken by some vines that disappeared into the earth. If you can find her for us - we can continue looking for your gem." Alluriel answers.

Mary Dawnrose |

The face frowns.
"I do not have divination powers. I cannot tell you a specific location of where she is."
1d20 ⇒ 16
"At most, i can tell you whether she is alive."
At a nearby trunk, the inner circles of the tree twist.
The rough shape of Lillianne shows up, tied down. She's alive.
Unclear humanoid shapes are somewhere a distance behind her.

Alluriel |

"We'll need to go back for her then."Alluriel says determinedly as she leads the way back, via the twine trail to were Lillaine was last taken.
Will now take 20 for perception to look for anything unusual about the scene and follow it if need be.

Mary Dawnrose |

You end up approaching the scene from earlier.
The trail eventually stops near a scene of trees along an open path.
Everyone, a willsave DC 17 please.

Jurgan |
