Just as a heads-up, my wife could go into labor any day now with our first baby girl, so when that happens I'll post here and let you all know, and then I'll be doing VERY limited posting for at least 2-3 days.

Hajar nar Jundi |

Congratulations dude! Girls are fun, I know all the words to all the songs from Frozen.

Hajar nar Jundi |

Congrats Bartan, a Labor Day Special. ;)
Very punny of you.

Hajar nar Jundi |

Baby is coming today! Super limited posting for a bit.
Congrats Bro!
In slightly related news, my wife and I are expecting our 3rd...we found out for sure yesterday. If its another girl, I might just dye my entire wardrobe pink and keep Disney Princess music playing as background music foe the next 18+- years.

Hajar nar Jundi |

Hajar wants to confront Xulthos if possible but he knows he needs his allies for this task. Should we take the gnolls before heading back down to the Church?

Dhavyn Barr |

Congrats Bartan. I'd say super limited posting for a long while is likely to be more accurate. Babies tend to to be avid consumers of parents' spare time. :)
As for the current situation. Dhavyn prefers opptions that keep his hide intact but so far the gnolls haven't been a great threat.

Dhavyn Barr |

Some "bad" news here. When the game seemed to die out I agreed on a few RL thing which lead to days when I can't post. For example I know I won't be able to post tomorrow due full day job related training and on thursday I won't be in a place with net connection at all. Next weekend might be tricky too.

Bartan Harrowborn |

So the labor was extremely fast (we labored at home from 10pm til 4:30, then got to the hospital at 5am and the baby was out at 9:36). She's perfectly healthy, my wife is doing great, and we're now at home and getting into the groove of breastfeeding. I'll still be a bit less available, but I should be able to post at least once a day with no issue now. Thanks for the positive vibes, guys!

Hajar nar Jundi |

GM, I've often found it necessary to invoke the 24HR rule in the games I run here on the boards. Basically, you have 24 hours in combat from your last gameplay post before you are botted to keep combat from dragging.

Hajar nar Jundi |

Hey guys,
I think I'll be taking Hajar down the Oracle train from here on out. He will still be Hajar the Paladin but with a different set of class abilities for 4th through whatever levels. I spoke with the GM and he is ok with the move.
What do you guys think?

Feel free to make your character however you like. Kinda reminds me of the Knight of Grace from the MCA wiki.
The only thing on Yazi's mind atm is whether or not sleeping with Sunny automatically counts as a threesome since you have that genie in your head :3

Dhavyn Barr |

Hey guys. I'm sorry to say but I will be dropping the game though it probably comes as no surprise seeing how bad my posting has been as of late. I thought my schedule would get easier starting this week but it actually didn't ease up at all. I suspect I won't be available again until my current contract is over but that's end of October - or possibly later if they continue it.
I'm just at home on completely wacky hours if even then and usually feeling too drained to even boot up a computer. Trying to get even a single post in per day has become a chore instead of fun so it's time to give up. Best wishes to y'all.

GM_Pace |

Sorry to hear that, Dhavyn. Do you want to continue to the end of Book One, or "tonight" (in game time), or should we start robot-ting you now?
I'll NPC your character at the appropriate time. Feel free to come back into the game at any time, I'll think of a way to get you back in. :)

Hajar nar Jundi |

Awww...darn it. Sucks man.
I think we need to recruit a ranged option now.

Awww...darn it. Sucks man.
I think we need to recruit a ranged option now.
Solution 1: strap dual mini ballistas to Doc.
Solution 2: Anybody know anybody that wants to play a ranged?

Hajar nar Jundi |

I have a friend in my Falcons Hollow game that is a seriously reliable poster ,and a pretty cool all around guy to boot, that I could ask with GM permission.

Hajar nar Jundi |

I was waiting for someone else to post

I was hoping Avenka would stay for another week.
So we are now down to 4 people. I'm botting two, Dhavyn and Avenka, until the end of the encounter, since we are so close to the end of the first book in the AP. When we get to the end of the book, I'll post on the Recruitment thread for one or two more players.
You guys and gals are keeping this fun. Don't worry, I'm still going strong.

Hajar nar Jundi |

Avenka sorry to see you go. GM how do you do recruiting?
-Posted with Wayfinder

GM_Pace |

I'm going to have to re-read the original Recruitment thread and decide how to bring a new person or people in. They'll be at equivalent level, and I will ask for strengths to balance out the party's weaknesses. But I'll post a general appeal via the existing Recruitment thread. I don't want to keep anybody waiting, so I'll postpone the recruitment until everyone here has finished the final Boss fight and are ready for the epilogue. Book One of the AP gives a long epilogue, so you could potentially search Kelmarane's battle market for another week, and the surrounding lands for another week until the opening of Book Two.

Hajar nar Jundi |

OK, I'll make a request then and you ofc have the final decision.
Could we recruit players and NOT characters? What I mean is that all the time on these boards I see GM's looking for players for their games, and then they look at the character sheet get wowed by awesome backtories or whatever and select people. Who promptly make 1-3 posts/week for a few months and then drop off the face of the earth.
I'd rather have people post why they are interested and then get picked, and THEN make a character sheet. And they could then make their sheet and tie their characters into the already evolving plot and characters which exist in the game.
Ie: We may rescue Haleen, someone could play Haleen. We don't know what race/class Haleen is or if that is even her real name.
EX: The last LoF game I played in (died in book 2 with GM dropping off the planet) we lost a couple players. We recruited another from someone's existing game. This player came in and played the Gnoll Bartender from the battle market, complete with backstory for why he wanted to face the Carrion king, why he wanted to help the party and we RPed his introduction pretty fluidly in gameplay. IIRC Hajar spared his life and then convinced him of the evils of Rovagug. Another player took time convincing him that not all humans were weaklings who deserved slavery or death. Fun times.

GM_Pace |

Hajar, I've seen that in other Recruitments, especially those with "closed" worlds. I can open it to any "current NPC" still alive at the end of Howl of the Carrion King, then "crossover PCs", then new players. But it's far more desirable, and enjoyable, to get a "good player", rather than a "good PC".
We've got a few days to hash out before I make an announcement on the Recruitment thread. Hopefully without a brand-new post; I'd like to keep everything within the current thread.

Avenka Thalma |

Hi everyone,
I feel like I should explain my departure, since we played together for a good chunk of time now and I really appreciated you guys, and also I don’t want to be seen as the kind of players that just leaves the games for no good reasons, or « vanishes from the planet », like Hajar said...
Before I explain myself tough, please let me clarify that I am the only one responsible for leaving, it’s not anyone’s fault and it’s fine if you enjoy this experience and I didn’t quite so much. Maybe PBP is not my thing, I don’t know, since it was my first experience and I’ll have to try it again someday. So again, please don’t see my arguments like they are targeting someone, I just want to express my feelings towards this game and clearly explain why I left, and being 100% honest is the best thing I can do IMO.
So, at the beginning, in the recruitment, Hadassa was asking for players who loved to role play, and said the rules didn’t matter that much to him. I thought « what a good opportunity, I really love to role play and I’m new to pathfinder and PBP ». So we began and it was a blast ! I really enjoyed being the barbarian that didn’t quite belong at first and that tried to desperately find an ally within the group… With Anjali that was really good at role play and that kinda liked Avenka (Anjali liked everyone, but the barbarian felt special around her), I found I had my ally (and a player that thought like me) and it was really fun. At some time later, it was almost boys vs girls, and with the Yazi flirting around, Dhavyn being a bit harsh with people, it was just great. Yes we did the « action stuff », but it was secondary to the chemistry of our group.
Later on, I hit my first (minor) bump : combats. Maybe I’m too strict, but I’m the kind of guy who prefers things done in order, and I wanted to do some strategies related to initiative order (ie : do not go in front of the caster or the archer, wait to see which spell effect is on and then react to that…), but people posted regardless of their init order, and everybody seemed to prefer it that way, to save time and not have to wait after others that posted later in the day… I complied, even though I found it rather sad, it was like init didn’t matter after all, the only thing that mattered was to play fast, but again, maybe that is just a format thing necessary to PBP… So I kept going without complaining, because after all, we’re a group and we must go with the majority, and that technical aspect was not going to bring me down…
Second (major that one) bump : Anjali left, and then Hadassa the GM (not particularly in that order, I don’t remember which left first)… Since then, it felt to me (although GM_Pace did a really great job!) that this game was not the same anymore. Role play has gone down A LOT, too much for me. A simple example is recently with Khayal « saying » he’s not fit to continue, but people just kept going in spite of that, not even a word, like it didn’t matter that he died (I know it was OOC by Khayal, but just seeing his state should have been enough to at least pause a bit)… It’s like the only goal now was to go fast fast fast into the action and finish the book, no matter what. Sorry if I sound negative, it’s only how I feel… I felt like that since those last 3-4 weeks and I had already told GM_Pace that I would leave the game, that it was not for me anymore (again, to no fault of his or anyone’s)… I just kept going to try to do it smoothly and « in game », but it was no more fun for me, and each week was a bit less fun than the one before.
Third and final bump (it didn’t cause my decision, it just accelerated it) : We are in pathfinder, in Golarion, I want to immerse myself in a fantasy setting and this game allows me to disconnect from reality, which I really, really need. Maybe I’m too serious and maybe I don’t have a sense of humour or whatever, but seeing Michael Jackson just killed whatever little fun I had left. Again, I don’t want to sound critical or give the image of a spoiled brat, but it was just too much for me, and like Dhavyn said (for different reasons), when it becomes a chore, it’s best to leave.
Those are my reasons, it’s not one event in particular, it’s just a global downgrade of fun for me… Again, it’s fine if that formula is what you need in a game, we all have different tastes / experiences with rpg, and that one was not for me anymore…I hope you all understand that I have nothing against anyone… I just wanted to put it on the table and not leave like a savage. I consider myself a "good player", just not the kind of players that fits this group anymore.
I really wish you a good time with legacy of fire, and I hope that if we see each other in the future, there will be no hard feelings !

GM_Pace |

Well, I'll take the hit for the "drive to finish the book". I thought after losing Hadassa, everyone would want to finish as quickly as possible in order to rest. Howl of the Carrion King doesn't really give that much opportunity to rest, not in any of the Legacy of Fire modules, except for specific times, like as an epilogue or in order to do one of the many side treks. To me, inactivity in a PbP indicates boredom, and boredom equals people dropping out.
So having everyone post 5 or 6 times a day keeps me on my GM toes, and I really appreciate the feedback from everybody.
As for the Michael Jackson joke, that's entirely me. I thought it would be humorous to do a "4th-panel" experience. At my RL gaming table on odd weekends we've run out of icon pictures, so oftentimes the enemy will have a celebrity's face, just so it's different. If anybody objects to this, I'll stop immediately.
Like I said, I'm usually a "by the book" GM. We're nearing the final Boss fight, but there's still many unresolved issues all over the place, from the battle market and even people back in the Monastery, so if anybody wants me to slow down and take it easy to finish HoCK, aka Book One, I will.
I'm sorry my style didn't match with yours, Avenka. Feel free to come back anytime. I promise to retire your character gracefully.

Hajar nar Jundi |

I thought the MJ reference was funny. I am also ok with hurrying through Book 1 for my own selfish reasons. I don't particularly care about roleplay vs. combat as long as everyone is posting a couple times a day.
Posting rate > pretty much everything else. If you want your posts to involve long segments of roleplay and interaction then I'm all for it, if you just wanna say what your character does then I'm all for that too. Always be posting, to paraphrase Glengarry Glen Ross.
Pace, thanks for taking up the mantle. I hope that we as players have not let you down.

Bartan Harrowborn |

@Avenka: Totally understand your feelings, though I'm still having a blast, it's definitely different than it was before. That might not mesh with some people, and that's okay. You were super fun to play with and I hope we run into each other again!
@Everyone regarding Hajar's health issue: I felt REALLY bad just continuing on when we knew our fellow character was badly injured, but I have literally nothing to give as far as healing, unfortunately. We REALLY need to find a place to buy a cure light wounds wand ASAP!

Hajar nar Jundi |

We have some previously found CLW potions also I believe everyone had one or two of them. Or maybe just Avenka and Khayal...not sure how that went, haven't kept up with loot.

Hajar nar Jundi |

1x per day guys, lets go.

GM_Pace |

Just waiting on Yazi, then I'll bot Dhavyn and Avenka. We're all suffering "the curse of the low rolls". I haven't seen it this bad in years. Avenka before she left was rolling high 20s to hit and high teens of damage. Now I bot her and she's barely making double-digits on attacks and nothing on damage.
