GM WhtKnt's The Waxing Dark: Savage Worlds Weird War I

Game Master WhtKnt

The year is 1914. The place is the battlefield of the Great War You’re here for the duration, until your life or mind are destroyed, or until this deadly struggle with the mud, disease, and the enemy finally ends in the paneled halls of some national capital far from the fighting.

Good luck, trooper—you’ll need it!

Aleksei looks at the man interrogating them. The others didn't seem to be bothered that he wasn't military. "English Intelligence?", he says, almost rhetorically.

Sure. Call it 3d10 ⇒ (2, 8, 1) = 11 dollars.

"Something like that," the man smiles and winks at Aleksei. "Conan Doyle," he says, extending a hand.

He listens intently to Robert's report, making notes on a small pad and mumbling to himself. He does not seem surprised by the report, almost as though he expected something like it.

"Conan Doyle? Never heard of ya," Dan quips, sitting on a chair he's turned around backwards. "And what kind of name is that, anyway? With a name like that they let you around men with guns? Sorry for the delay. My wife had another eye surgery on Monday (not to fix the problem, but rather to keep it from getting any worse) and our surgeon is two hours away, plus we had to be there at 0715 the next morning, so we opted to stay overnight (as opposed to getting up at 0430 and making a two-hour drive). Anyway, long story short, she's recovering nicely and I'm trying to get back on track.

Doyle gives a half-smile. "Have any of you ever heard of MI-13? It's an organization dedicated to studying... unconventional intelligence sources. We investigate such happenings as the one that you men experienced."

"Your case is not that unusual, though it is certainly uncommon. If you lads are up to it, I could use a few field agents in this area."

He frowns again, spends some time hemming and hawing, takes a lap around the tent, and kneels, checking his reflection in his boot for a moment as if he'll be able to see the evidence of psychosis in his eyes. "I cannot doubt ze evidence of my senses," he says, finally, standing. "So if I'm crazy, you're all crazy wiz me. Rank (NCO or Officer)
Requirements: Novice, Smarts d6+
Non-commissioned officers (sergeants) and regular officers (lieutenants and higher) get to command subordinates, but are also responsible for the success or failure of their men and their mission. They know the thrill of watching a plan come together, and the agony of watching one fall apart.

In Weird Wars, the Rank Edge allows NCOs and officers to command a unit appropriate to their rank level. Characters who purchase this Edge get an additional benefit, described below. Nonplayer characters and those who achieve rank during play do not get these additional abilities.

NCOs are the backbone of their squad, and must be tougher, stronger, and more resilient than those they lead. Noncoms with the Rank (NCO) Edge add +2 to their Toughness to reflect their hard-bitten nature. The character’s military rank is the lowest for an NCO in his particular service branch (a sergeant in the US Army, for example).

Officers are there to inspire and lead, and should definitely concentrate on Leadership Edges as they advance. To help them get there, officers gain an additional Benny per game session, and may always spend it on those under their command. (An officer with the Common Bond Edge can grant a Benny to anyone—not just those under his command.) A character with the Rank (Officer) Edge starts at the lowest commissioned officer rank in his particular service branch (usually 2nd Lieutenant or the equivalent of O-1).

Tactical Command: Note that though NCOs and officers may give the orders, tactical control of Extras during play should still be split up among the players as usual. This ensures everyone gets to do something and doesn’t overburden the commanders. Remember this is still Savage Worlds, and the action should be fast and furious.

Seeing as we're all Privates, none of us qualify for even the NCO version of the Edge. Or does taking the Edge automatically get us a promotion? :)
And, it seems like taking the Edge merely puts the burden of combat decision-making on the player, with very little reward in return (ok, +2 Toughness is cool, and I suppose one extra Benny *could* occasionally mean the difference between life-and-death, but...meh).

It's up to you guys. It is possible to earn rank the old-fashioned way, but you don't get the bonus, in that case. Yes, if you take the Edge, you get the rank.

Sounds good! In the meantime, all of you are given a battlefield promotion to Lance Corporal (E-3) in the British Army for your ingenuity and heroism. Lt. Thayer also assures you that he will put you in for medals.

"Just ask about for him. He should be pretty easy to locate. And be wary! You're going to be on the front lines of combat! Those damned Huns are tricky."

You are given a short time to get things in order and perhaps grab a bite to eat, then you are to report to the caravan. The caravan trip is largely uneventful, but as you get close to the front lines, the danger becomes more prevalent.

You arrive in the middle of organized chaos. The trenches are filthy and noisy, filled with the sounds of men shouting, gunfire, and the occasional bomb blast. Wooden boards line the bottom of the trenches in a vain effort to keep the mud and water at bay. The stench of unwashed men, waste, and gunpowder fills your nostrils. Any of the men can easily point you to Major Ral.

The major greets you curtly. "You're the lads from Intelligence? I'm afraid that you've arrived at an inopportune moment. The Bosche are trying to push our lines. We're out to hold them back."

"Take up positions there, there, and there," Ral points to positions along the trench, about 3 yards apart. "When you see the enemy, fire at him. Don't waver. Your life and the lives of your mates depend on it!"

You do as instructed, taking up positions along the trench. The Germans surge forward in a desperate attempt to take the position, but the British respond with a furious roar of gunfire. Bodies fall, but the troops keep coming.

"We'll have to beat them back the old-fashioned way, lads!" the major shouts to be heard over the din. "Have at them!"

At his command, the British surge over the top of their own trench and begin fighting hand-to-hand. Soon, no man's land is filled with the sound of metal on metal and flesh on flesh.

Jacques' wild shot does indeed attract the attention of the enemy soldier. Turning to him, the German fires a return shot which catches Jacques in the shoulder. Jacques, you need to succeed at a Spirit test or be Shaken. You also suffer another wound.

Meanwhile, Robert and Aleksei press the attack. Robert's shot fells his foe, while Aleksei gives his foe a minor wound to the stomach. The German seems distracted by the less-than-damaging attack, however.

Morgan misses a German by mere inches with his shot. The attack hit, but doesn't get past his Toughness, which I interpret as a near miss.

Aleksei - you don't add any bonuses or penalties to your Acing rolls, that's "double dipping". So you "merely" got a 19... ;)

Jacques cracks his neck and adjusts his glasses as he steps toward the stunned and scrambling German menacingly. "Raus aus Frankreich oder ich werde dich hier begraben," he says in stilted German as he raises his rifle and digs in for the longhaul.

So, Jacques, take 3d6 damage, and may the dice gods have mercy on your soul...or at least, your PC!

Oh whoops, forgot we were rolling our own damage.

Pls no deatherino: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 4) = 14
J/k, deatherino: 1d6 ⇒ 1 = 15, so 2 wounds

The rules don't address it specifically, so I'm going to assume it's okay for me to try and soak that too... Please let me know if not, WhtKnt. :)

Ace!: 1d6 ⇒ 3 = 9, soaking both!

Jacques is battered and bruised, but not truly wounded. But he feels like his luck might run out before too long.

Jacques, it's fine to soak two. This is a tough situation.

German Knowledge (Battle): 1d8 ⇒ 3
British Knowledge (Battle): 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8

The Brits make it, but the Germans do not. The Germans lose another token and must make a morale roll.

German morale: 1d8 - 2 ⇒ (6) - 2 = 4

The Germans continue to fight on! Everyone make your plays for the next round of combat! Keep in mind that you get a +2 to the roll!

As the sun climbs higher into the sky, the battle rages. For every inch the Germans move forward, the Tommies push them back two, but the Huns keep coming.

"Come on, you apes! You wanna live forever?

It's better to fight for something than live for nothing!" Daniel cries as he continues to pour hot lead into the enemy lines!

Shoot, shoot, shoot to kill.: 1d10 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

Shaken, not stirred.

Though both his arms and one leg are covered with a dozen minor wounds from near misses and dirt accelerated toward him from enemy artillery, yet he fights determined that this line shall hold!
