Not necessary. It opens easily.
The coffer is empty, sadly. But Corric makes an uneducated guess that it would bring 5,000 gp or so on the open market.
The hopeknife, however, bears an inscription, "For Rodrik, my love."
Norasha Mountainrunner |
"Ah! This is his hopeknife! Well this is Brinya's but she gave it to him since the exchanging of hopeknives is done between lovers. This will bring some closure to a part of the mystery. But tis won't be fully over until we catch the murderer. Let us hope we can find and bring the villain to justice," Norasha said.
She looks at the treasure they found and added, "I agree. These potions and holy water were probably put aside for an emergency. Let us make use of them so whoever put these here can rest easy in peace knowing that brave souls are using them in good intentions."
Rokar Longclaw |
Rokar picks himself up a bit.
"I agree, Norasha. I think Kurst and Sara will want to know what we've found here, but we should be thorough before heading back. The upstairs maybe, and then back to the hidden room downstairs? Then we can head back."
"Oh, hrm. It's probably nothing but..."
Rokar sniffs the air, hoping to catch a scent of a familiar person, now that they've found some belongings.
Scent: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (12) + 15 = 27
Aisha Rageborn |
"Yes," Aisha agrees. "We should make sure to search everything. If there's someone using this place to hide something, anything we leave behind now may be gone if we have to come back later."
WhtKnt |
There are several scents. Some are not familiar, but one belongs to Rodrik. None are strong enough to follow, however.
Norasha Mountainrunner |
Norasha nods in agreement.
"Tis a good idea Aisha. If someone be using this place as a hideout, we best explore and search every nook and cranny!"
The dwarf then went about seeing if she could help her friends out.
Aid Another Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
Rokar Longclaw |
Rokar takes in the scents, making a mental note and hoping to find something later to compare it to.
"It's agreed then. This back room, then the upstairs," Rokar point to the door just in front of them, then back towards the hallway, "the basement, and then back to town. Corric, care to lead the way friend?"
Corric Toppleton |
Corric nods, and dramatically flexes his fingers and stretches his arms.
"I'll make sure anything that might hurt is nice and nonfunctional."
Corric makes his way quietly into the backroom, his mind returning to what it once was not too long ago. Alone. Tense. Eager.
Sneak: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15
Disable Device: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
Aisha Rageborn |
Aisha nods and activates her mage sight again, keeping an eye out for more caches or perhaps magical traps.
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
WhtKnt |
Corric examines the iron door carefully, insuring that there are no hidden traps to be found. Satisfied, he opens it into a small room. A large steel lockbox sits in front of a steep stone staircase that winds down into darkness.
Corric Toppleton |
What have we here?
Corric checks the room and box for traps, and then attempts to open the box if there is no danger from the staircase, room, or lockbox.
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21
Disable Device: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
Sneak: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26
WhtKnt |
Corric examines the room, but has no sooner stepped inside than he hears a shriek of defiance as three rats the size of small dogs charge up the stairs from below.
One rat leaves the safety of the pack to attack Corric, managing to catch him flat-footed and sink its fangs into him. (Corric takes 2 points of damage)
Aisha and Norasha are up!

Aisha Rageborn |
Aisha jumps back as the rats appear. "More vermin..." A rock levitates above her hand and launches at the rat, but it catches on the door frame and misses by a mile.
Telekinetic Projectile: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Norasha Mountainrunner |
"Oh great, rats," Norasha says rolling her eyes as she swings her axe at the rat.
Since Norasha would be at the front of the party where she would be able to help out in case someone came charging at them, she would attack the rat that just attacked Corric.
Waraxe Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
Waraxe Damage: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
WhtKnt |
Aisha' shot goes wide as Norasha cleaves at the rat, her attack missing by several feet. The rat in the back squeaks excitedly, but cannot find an opening to get at Norasha or Corric.
Corric is up!
Corric Toppleton |
Sneak of 26 didn't make it? Dang, those rats are perceptive.
"Shit! Shit! F&@&!"
Corric lets out a string of explitives as he quick draws both of his saps from his spring triggers attached to his forearms. He quickly swings to pound the rodents into the floor.
Attack 1: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Attack 2: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Just a case a 10 does hit

Blast it! My post got eaten! I posted a response three days ago and was wondering why no one had responded.
My apologies, Corric, in that I completely overlooked your Stealth roll. I will remember it in future. In all honesty, the rats probably would have heard the party in the previous room and have been at the ready anyway.
I am going to post the results of the original post, including a missed attack by the rat, so that's why there is no roll.
Corric's attack both miss. The rat retaliates, but also misses.
Rokar is up!
WhtKnt |
As Rokar begins his summoning, the lead rat (#2) bites at Corric again. This time it misses the halfling.
Aisha is up!
Aisha Rageborn |
Aisha focuses, sending another rock hurtling through the air with far more accuracy than her last shot, aiming to catch the nearest rat.
Telekinetic Projectile: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5
Norasha Mountainrunner |
Is it my turn now, or the rats?
Norasha Mountainrunner |
Norasha swung her axe at the rat with all her might!
Waraxe attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
Waraxe damage: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
WhtKnt |
Rocks fly and axes fall, and still the rats remain unharmed! Rat #3 snarls and hisses, but cannot find an opening to attack.
Corric is up!
WhtKnt |
The lead rat snaps at Corric again, managing to get a bite in on the halfling. (Corric takes 4 points of damage.)
Rokar Longclaw |
As a wild looking dog comes into existence opposite the rat from Corric, Rokar commands it to "Attack!".
"Corric! Norasha! Draw them out!"
Can I delay after free actions to yell? Not a lot I can do from back here, and I'm god-awful at shooting into melee.
WhtKnt |
Rat #2 bites at Norasha, but misses.
Aisha and Norasha are up!
Rokar Longclaw |
Awesome. Does my summoned dog delay with me? If possible I'd rather have him attacking as soon as he can since he's on the 'good' side of the fight positioning-wise.
Aisha Rageborn |
Hearing Rokar's call, Aisha steps back and fires another projectile with a burst of psychic energy. Unfortunately, it once against misses rather badly.
Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Norasha Mountainrunner |
"Let them through!? Have ye gone mad!?"
Norasha narrowly dodged the rodent's attack and swung her axe in retaliation, aiming for the rat's face.
Waraxe attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
Waraxe damage: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
Confirm critical? Waraxe attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22
Waraxe damage: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
Ive always gotten confused when my weapon's critical is x3. Never been able to figure that one out. In case it did roll a critical I rolled to see if it confirmed.
Norasha Mountainrunner |
Ah okay. And thank you! Appreciate the help there. :)
WhtKnt |
Aisha flings another stone, but misses, while Norasha finally connects, splitting a rat in half! Free to move forward, Rat #3 does so, biting at Norasha and scratching her arm. (Norasha takes 1 point of damage.)
Corric is up!
