"I appreciate the gesture, but a cross-breeze needs more than one window. Would you be so good as to speak with the household majordomo about opening more?"

"Certainly my friend."

Petrus asks the first servant he sees where he can find the majordomo, then seeks them out.

"Pardon me. One of the guests, the esteemed Jakti al’Awar, has asked that you have the staff open some more windows to mitigate the heat of the day. Could you please set someone to see to this? Many thanks."

On his way back Petrus picks up two glasses of chilled wine, and offers one of them to al'Awar.

"I've had a word with the majordomo. Hopefully the room will cool shortly. In the meantime, perhaps a drink will serve. Perhaps we might return to the matter I had raised before. A mutually beneficial arrangement with Trade Prince Aaqir. Might you be amenable to such an undertaking?"

Dieb chuckles at the suggestion. "Yes...that would be a most humorous occurrence. Alas, we are but scholars and bodyguards, so not a one of us would be able to conjure such roguish skill as to pick a pocket or wrench a door. And would you not say that it is for the better? Have you ever known a rich burglar? Surly so successful a man as yourself would rather vanquish a rival that was at their full powers, and not play at parlor tricks? What joy is there to be had at titillating at some fumbled speech compared to the unparalleled rapture at seeing a rival's business close their doors as they beg you to take their un-sold stock from them at a fraction the price they paid?
If that is your goal, and why would it not be, what say you to engaging in talks with the Trade Prince? Surely a mutually profitable arrangement between you two men of intellect and means would be a noble goal?"

Dieb smiles, and then, sadly sighs.
"Of course, if you would rather not, I suppose I shall be forced to invite the dwarf to audience. Such is not my preference, but the Trade Prince will have a partner, one way, or another."

Temel only laughs softly at Dieb's last comment. "Your Society has already shown favor to Metella over me, and I am not bothered. Your threat is hollow." He takes a moment to consume a small wafer from the refreshment table, but the smirk never leaves his face.

So, you object to how your business is not as lucrative as before? It has been documented that you are loosing profit over the past months, and yet you chose to rebuke these facts. Interesting, what would you call your recent slide? Better yet, what are your plans to turn things around and get back on track? I know that you worked very hard to get where you are today, I would expect nothing less with the current state of affairs.

Polo stops a server making her rounds with treats to pluck a couple bite sized morsels off of her tray. She needs to bend down for him to reach.

“To each his own, I suppose,” he deflects before popping the food into his mouth. He doesn’t wait for it to clear as he continues on."Mmm-Seems like a missed opportunity to me. I’m sure the Trade Prince has no qualms in doing business with them. Those ‘bone veev ants’ in Taldor certainly have troves of coin that they like to spend on the silliest things.” He gulps down the chew.

The server makes a move to continue on, but Polo pulls her arm down and grabs another handful. ”I’ve heard of the goods you trade: they tend to last a long time.” Bits of food sprinkle out from his smacking lips as he shovels more in. ”Mmmph-It wouldn’t be a surprise to anyone if a few such finely crafted items eventually made their way to those haughty nobles across the border. Everyone knows all of those Taldorians are always seeking to get their hands on high value ware. Even more so if their neighbors don’t have easy access to it. Say you started providing your goods to al’Hakam here in Qadir. I’m sure that more than a few rich nobles would pay him very well for some exotic Andoran goods. If it got to that point it wouldn’t even be your business at all: you can’t control who else the Trade Prince deals with.”

Polo alleviates the server of the tray entirely and finally let’s her take off. ”But what do I know of such things. I’m just a loud-mouthed, lowbrow of a brute who’s only here as display. Your business dealings wouldn’t be a concern to the likes of me. That manner is for you and al’Hakam, should you see it fit to enter into an arrangement with him. That being said, I wouldn’t mind passing a discrete word or two between each of you.” The Halfling offers what remains of the nearly empty tray up to Pellius, his iconic grin beaming up all the while.

Well aren't you folks an impetuous bunch. :)

Doritannia looks over towards Temel before answering Torsk. "I... have made an effort to ally myself with elements of stability," she offers slowly. "If you are so certain that Trade Prince Aaqir is such an element, I would be interested in pursuing a business arrangement. Would you be so kind as to send him my regards?" Fine work!

"You see," Pellius says to Polo with an easy smile, "I deal in durable goods--metals, arms, armor, the like. When was the last time Taldor went to war? Though its nobles are a rich fruit to pick, their a weak and stuffy lot. That'd be a whole new business venture for me. Unknown territory. That's a big risk, wouldn't you say?" Great RP + mediocre roll = need a little help? *Hint hint.*

"What has the Druman done to me?" Metella scoffs, a little loudly. "He thinks that he can control my trade routes, and he is sorely mistaken. How would you feel if some bloody foreigner, dressed all in stuffy white for 'purity,' just strode into your forest and started giving tours?!" The dwarf's face grows redder by the word, her gruff manner beginning to draw the attention of other nearby guests. Realizing this, she pipes down a bit. "Suffice it to say that Passad and I do not get along."

"Such a leisure would indeed be a wonderful thing. If you would arrange it, I would be happy to meet with your patron." There's something more behind Jakti's words, but Petrus can't quite place it. In any event, the man seems happy enough to take up the offer.

Why, I mean, just take the latest fad among the nobility: Metal furniture. Can't get enough of the stuff. Metal chairs, ornate and robust; metal beds with high, lilting ceilings. Even some houses. Apparently forsaking the traditional building materials is all the next wave of 'ostentatious'.
But they are an odd lot, not a one among them has the vaguest idea of how to truly deal in durable goods. Did a merchant of any skill gain an audience with the Trade Prince to get a foot in the door, why the profit margin would be...incalculable.
But I'm sure one don't need to hear about such trifles. Apologies for bothering you."

"I am Cesare Andistore, of the Pathfinders and tonight I represent the interests of the Trade Prince. He is grateful for your appearance at this gathering; it lends the affair some gravity when men of wealth and accomplishment pay their respects."

As the shadows lengthen, the cleric Umut emerges from the temple, calls for the guests’ attention, and requests they honor the deceased. With that, Aaqir al’Hakam and several other members of the Bahjari household carry a wooden bier bearing the shrouded body of Zarmina through the front door, up the stairs, and into the temple, where the guests file in afterward. Aaqir al’Hakam and the others lay the bier atop the altar of Sarenrae, and then join the other guests in the pews.

Umut opens the service by recognizing the goddess to whom the temple is consecrated as a sign of respect before transitioning to an invocation: "With these acts and prayers, we honor our lady of eternity, who shepherds the deceased to an everlasting afterlife." Umut then conducts a lengthy funereal ceremony, with the sun reaching slowly for the distant horizon. Most of her prayers are in her native Osirian language, though her bidding the soul safe voyage down the River of Souls is delivered in Common. With that, she invites the guests to come forward, place any gift to be interred with Zarmina on the table near the altar, and address the guests and the deceased.

DC 20 Kn Religion:
Umut's execution of the funeral strikes you as less polished than one would expect of a priestess of her stature.

The merchants who have come to honor Zarmina all give splendid gifts. Doritannia Raffella speaks highly of Zarmina, and she further cites Temel Passad as a similarly upstanding member of the mercantile community who will certainly carry Zarmina’s torch of fair business practices into the future; Temel seems to expect this praise and nods in recognition of her kind words. Pellius Melkior likens memories of Zarmina to finely crafted dwarven stone—enduring, beautiful, and formed gradually over many years of virtuous work. Metella Rauger is somewhat embarrassed by this reference, but by the end of the Andoren’s speech, she is smiling in appreciation. Jakti al’Awar’s gift is a gold and jewel-embellished ledger, and his speech praises Zarmina for having lived a virtuous and charitable life yet suffering neither the kowtowing of sycophants nor the underhandedness of villains.

DC 20 Sense Motive:

Temel, Metella, and Jakti all seem to care more about who gets mentioned in a speech more than what the gift is...

At this point, it's your turn to give a speech. You must choose one member of your party to deliver the speech on behalf of the Society. That person will make a single Perform (Oratory), Diplomacy, or Bluff check. Once again, circumstance bonuses are possible!

The gathered merchants listen closely to the priest of Gorum's orations, but Petrus trips a little over his words and, more importantly, they don't appear to get quite what they want to hear. Still, there is some polite clapping at the conclusion.

The last of the speeches concludes as the sun approaches the horizon, its red light illuminating the room in crimson hues. Umut orates a closing prayer, finishing by brushing her lips against Zarmina’s forehead, whispers an inaudible message, and then brushing her hands gently down the body’s face as if closing Zarmina’s eyes forever. She then has several servants gather the gifts and informs Aaqir al’Hakam that she is leaving to prepare the mausoleum for the interment. Aaqir requests that the guests remain in the area for several minutes before they carry the body to the graveyard.

To pass the waiting, Jakti al’Awar proposes everyone raise a glass and toast Aaqir al’Hakam and Emir Thalzar Gaatan. Temel, Doritannia, Pellius, and Jakti all give glowing, earnest toasts, but Metella's is merely polite and not particularly heartfelt.

DC 15 Sense Motive:
The sincerity of each toast seems to correspond roughly with how well the party has been in gaining the favor of each merchant.

Jakti al’Awar, the last to toast the hosts, concludes his remarks by saying, "And may our hosts carry on the legacy of the departed, may Sarenrae see her safely to Nirvana and its city of High Ninshabur." He gestures in the direction of the door, asking if Aaqir is ready to begin the funereal march to the graveyard.

As he does this, the body of Zarmina twitches to life. Tearing herself out of the burial shroud with a pained moan, she points toward the door--where Jakti, Metella, Temel, and Aaqir have begun to gather--and shouts, "You have failed me! Betrayer!" A furious heated wind sweeps over the front rows, causing several to faint. Eyes ablaze like living coals, the unliving Zarmina begins attacking the guests, throttling one slow Keleshite elder to death as he tries to flee.

Aaqir signals for you to intervene as he tries to keep the crowd under control!

Initiative Rolls:

Cesare: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Dieb: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
Meredith: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20
Petrus: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
Polo: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Torsk: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Zarmina: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (5) + 0 = 5

Pews are difficult terrain and everyone needs to make a DC 14 Fort save at the start of their turn.

On a failed save:
You take 1d4 nonlethal damage (roll yourself please) and are fatigued.

Round I - bold may act!
1. Meredith, Cesare, Dieb, Petrus, Polo
2. Zarmina
3. Torsk

Polo gets an inkling of suspicion during Jakti's speech, but is unable to to discern why.

Just FYI, Sense Motive checks are not always used to unveil suspicious activity. Sometimes the motive is positive. :)

Also, the SM check isn't directed at Jakti specifically.

Also also, you're in combat and you're up, Polo!

Haha got it! Polo isn't great at reading anything outside of combat moves.
Fortitude : 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
Polo brushes off whatever fortitude test befalls those around him and immediately tries to charge at the now undead trade princess. However, the pews paired with his short Halfling legs hinder him on his way to his goal. He pulls out his lance as he moves, and is only just barely able to reach the unfortunate creature with a strike. 2NW squares
MW Lance : 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26

As noted above the pews are difficult terrain. That would be a double move for you. Polo moves over the pews, rather than around, but doesn't get very far on account of his weighty armor and short stature.

Round I -- bold may act! Still need the Fort save (see above) at the start of your first turn.
1. Meredith, Cesare, Dieb, Petrus, Polo
2. Zarmina
3. Torsk

I thought difficult terrain was just a double move? 10 feet for the first diagonal and then he's clear of the pews, but a second diagonal is another 10 feet. Doesn't that equal 20?

Yes and your statblock lists your speed as 15ft. Base speed of 20, then reduced to 15 for medium armor.

Oh jeez, that's right. Dammit wolf, where are you!? How long can an animal survive in one of those bags of holding for? Lol.
In that case Polo will take a double move 2NW,1N:

Polo clambers over a pew and hops into the aisle, pulling out his Greatsword in the meantime.

Dieb is shocked and stunned and sickened at what he sees. The words "I admit, I did -not- see that coming," seem to dribble from his mouth.

His powerful mental facilities recovering quickly, he takes Aaqir's signal to mean that weapons are free.

Glowing sigils of Pain and War are drawn in the air before him, and they glow brightly as he infuses his personal store of Powerful Magic into the spell. "STURMGEWEHR!" he shouts, loosing twin bolts of blue fire at the newly animated undead.

Hmpf. Did I need to kiss your feet to earn your favor, Dwarf? Too bad.

Meredith is quite shocked as the deceased Zarmina clambers out of its casket and flings accusations of betrayal.
Even from beyond the grave, power struggles among the elite continue.

Feeling an intense heatwave, Meredith tries to reinforce her defenses...

But fails, clearly not expecting this.

If that didn't prevent her actions:

Meredith moves 1 one spot SW of Polo, then calls upon her arcane energy. Her hair blooms behind her head, wrapping her arms in about 10 feet of hair. Her skin turns a sickly shade of green as this happens, seemingly getting tougher.

Cesare gives courage to his friends, strengthening their blows. Meanwhile, the hot wind emanating from Zarmina intensifies, and she moves to attack the fatigued Meredith--at least somewhat aware of her weakness. Her defenses slowed by the heat, Meredith is cut like a ribbon by Zarmina's long yellowed nails. Hits you b/c fatigue gives a Dex penalty, reducing AC. The sorceress falls, blood spattering the white tile of the temple floor.

I need a new Fort save, now DC 15, from Meredith, Cesare, and Dieb. Failure incurs 1d4 additional nonlethal. (Torsk just needs the initial DC 14 save or be fatigued plus 1d4 nonlethal.)
